This is the second book in the messy book shop mystery series, and a great follow up to A Binding Chance. This means that Garnet Stone enter new employer Jane end up involved near their mystery while taking care of Bind Me Again, continuing to reorganize and renovate the store. This time around they deal with Jocab Rome, a freelance editor in former employer of Voss Of Books, the competing book store in Sevier Oak, Tennessee. Jacob ends up killed and there are plenty of people that wanted him dead. Which made in fun and interesting to solve.

Readable, enjoyable, non-annoying characters and a solid mystery. Basically what I want in a cozy.

"Book High And Low" is book #2 in "Messy Bookshop Mysteries" by Jessica Brimer.

"Garnet Stone hoped the remodel would make the bookstore tidy, but her boss Jane is proving to be as messy as the previous owner. Garnet undergoes a secret mission to declutter the store, which isn’t easy with two cats running the place.

Jacob Rome overshadows Garnet’s concerns. The freelance editor has moved to Sevier Oak and causes problems with the locals. When he brings books for trade-in, Garnet and Jane find a death certificate tucked inside. The deceased is a missing person from twenty years ago, and the mystery intensifies when someone murders Jacob behind the store.

Garnet and Jane take it upon themselves to save the bookshop’s reputation - and of course, to satisfy their curiosity. Solving the homicide is a challenge as everyone seems to be lying, including the dead man. In the end, unearthing the truth will reveal much more than simply who murdered Jacob Rome."

My thoughts:
Jessica Brimer has woven a complex tale that has led to murder. The question is why was Jacob Rome murdered? Did it have something to do with the death certificate found in one of the books he brought to the used bookstore or was there more to it? He didn't exactly have the greatest reputation and certainly didn't keep his opinions to himself...

Garnet tries not to get involved but growing up in a law enforcement family, she has a curious mind. Her boss, Jane is all in for solving this crime as she fears the bookshop success may be at risk if they don't figure it out soon!

Several names are on the suspect list but sorting the truth from half truths and lies isn't going to be easy. I was able to sort out the story for the death certificate well before Garnet and Jane did but as to who killed Jacob and why? That took me till just before the reveal and eventual take down. Well done Ms. Brimer!

In this book, we learn a bit more about Garnet's family and in particular her half brother. There is also a potential romance for Garnet and Leo Voss - assuming his gramps Drake doesn't force the two apart somehow.

The relationships between Garnet, Jane and Megan are evolving. The Stone family is stronger than ever. A thoroughly enjoyable read and I'm already looking forward to whatever escapades Ms. Brimer comes up with for the 3rd book in this series!

Back at the messy bookshop.I love cozy mysteries, and this didn’t disappoint. It had all the best features. Garnet is nosy, and her friends are there along with her. There are so many clues going and so many suspects taking you in different directions. I wonder what’s coming next.

Good Mystery

Good mystery with just the right number of twists. I thought I had it figured out, but I was wrong. Kudos to Ms Brimer! Lately, I’ve been guessing correctly who did it, before the final reveal. It’s refreshing to know I can still be surprised. Looking forward to the 3rd book in the series.

Great story

I really like this series. It has good characters and takes place (mostly) in a bookstore, which is one of my favorite places. It would be better without the repeated explanation of how Garnet met Leo. Twice in this book after once in the first book. Still well worth the read.

I loved this book! The characters, I found, were more fleshed out and relatable in this book compared to the author's first in the series. I laughed out loud a few times! The mystery was compelling, and fun to read, and it kept me at the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed this book. If you were put off by the grammatical errors in the first book in this series, do try this book as all that is ironed out in this fantastic new book from an very talented author.
