In this guide to calligraphy, Mary Noble shows exactly how the beginner should set about acquiring the necessary skills to become a proficient calligrapher.
"Calligraphy Techinques: An Essential Beginner's Guide" by Mary Noble just didn't quite appeal to me. I read and perused this book while hunting for an introductory text from which to start learning calligraphy. While a solid book, and one which had information similar to others I liked, I found the presentation not to my liking.
Some good features: - Each chapter focuses on one hand/script, and the book covers all "major" scripts for beginners (Roman Capitals, Gothic, Foundational, Unicial, Italic) - Shows with images and descriptions many improper errors and their causes. - Includes several project ideas for each script presented. - Many tips oriented for "crafter" objectives and mediums
This book is less extensive than others, but as a beginner's guide, it provides the essentials for getting started with calligraphy. The subject is well presented, with many illustrations and photographs.
