Jesus promised His bewildered disciples that He would not leave them as orphans, but that He would pray to the Father who would send them another Comforter who would come alongside to help them and would abide with them forever. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would teach them all things and bring to their remembrance all the things that He had commanded them. In his warm personal style, Pastor Chuck Smith, a bible teacher for over 50 years, paints an intimate picture of the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. He is to conform you into the image of Christ. He is to come alongside of you to help you in your walk. He is to teach you all things. He is to give you an understanding of spiritual things. He is to give you the power to be a witness of Jesus Christ. There is a vast difference between being filled with the Holy Spirit and having the Holy Spirit flow forth out of your life like a torrent of living water. Pastor Smith will lead you step by step into this rich and intimate relationship with God which is made possible by the work of the Holy Spirit. You will experience the refreshing streams of living water filling your life then flowing forth from your life unto a thirsty world.
"Without the Spirit in its midst, the church would be nothing more than a social club or a service organization. But when the Spirit is given His proper place, the body of Christ becomes a dynamic force of change in a sick and dying world." (Chuck Smith, Living Water: The Power of the Holy Spirit in Your Life, Page 59)
The author begins by showing us where in the Godhead the Holy Spirit belongs and how He operates as the third person of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He then explains how Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to those who would believe on Him, that they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, whom the world could not receive. This Spirit would lead and guide believers into all truth. Also, that the Spirit would empower believers to be Christ's witness in all the world. Next, the author takes you through the various gifts and ministries that the Holy Spirit distributes to the Body of Christ: The word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, the gifts of healings, the gift of tongues, the gift of interpretation in tongues...
He then explains how all the gifts of the Spirit mean nothing if not used in love and how the Holy Spirit was sent to us to conform us into the image of Christ and to share the love of the Father, agape love, with the world.
A balanced view of the Holy Spirit, but by no means exhaustive. Many of the gifts of the Spirit are not expounded upon and I sensed a little bit of doubt from the author of the Holy Spirit's power at work today and the potential of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer.
Four Takeaways: 1) Many teachers and believers misrepresent the Holy Spirit. 2) A Christian that is always seeking an experience will miss how vast and often times simplistic the manifestation of the Spirit is. 3) More churches need to be praying for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. 4) Gifts are meant to be exercised, through love edifying the body of Christ, not hoarded.
A very good book and probably deserves a 4star - for some people. Any new Christian should be given this book as soon as possible. Any Christian who has little (or less) true understanding of the Spirit shouild be given this book. It is sound, it is good material and it is comprhensive without being 'heavy'. But it does not introduce many original illustrations. I have to say I was a little disappointed. If you have studied the subject of the person and work of the Holy Spirit you can safely pass on this one.
It wasn't what I expected but Chuck covered the Baptism of the Spirit, the Filling of the Holy Spirit or whatever people want to call it, and exposited on the gifts of the spirit
An important expositional piece on the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians everywhere. Based and rooted in scripture, Chuck Smith examines the many characteristics of the Spirit, as well as His functions in the church and in individual lives. Very good read. 297 Pages.
I'm thankful for Chuck Smith and his ministry, but I have a much less charismatic view of the gifts than I did when attending Calvary Chapel. That affects my review. If you're a cessationist you'll definitely disagree with this book. If you're charismatic, you'll probably enjoy it.
Since we are around %80 WATER, and Lord told me, the old Jesus is %100 pure water now. Not tap water.I found out water has memory. And also water has emotions. Then Lord told me where Jesus of the new is. I believe. I am Bradley. Be safe.
