Everything is facing trials, blaming God for misfortunes, snobbery, sharp tongues, faith and works, squabbling churches, worldliness, use of money and so there is a word for us all to lay up in our hearts and put into practice in our lives. Christians constantly need a recurrent emphasis upon the practical instructions of God's Word - the words that say, 'Do this' and 'Don't do that', and address the nuts and bolts of daily attitudes and actions. Herein lies the great usefulness of the epistle of James... It is a manual for practical godliness, which, when truly written on our hearts with power, will transform us as individual believers and as Christian fellowships.
Gordon J. Keddie is the minister of Grace Presbyterian Church in State College, Pennsylvania. He is the author of numerous titles including He spoke in parables and seven other Welwyn Commentaries published by EP Books.
I have been studying the book of James and for a good overview and challenge for practical daily living for the Christian it is always a good read for the new year. This is the 2nd time I have read this commentary , and even though he is not Matthew Henry or Johnstone, Keddie is a good writer and the book is a great challenge to grow in truth. I have enjoyed all the commentaries in the Wellwyn series and found them a good starting place for an overview of a book of the Bible.
I finished this little commentary the 3rd time. I felt I needed to read it again to ground myself in those practical points of the Christian life - wisdom, patience, purity, listening, works, judging. I especially wanted to meditate on Chp. 5 of James concerning prayer, sharing our burdens, and restoring a brother. I found the comments of Mr. Keddie so helpful. What is Christian fellowship? Good stuff! I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 star because it is not an I depth study/ commentary but an excellent starting point.
