The Alpha Construct

Rate this book
In 1993, a young girl was sexually assaulted at St. Peter's Catholic School. The priest and nun blamed her, calling her a tramp, but she wasn't. She was a good Catholic girl. She'd never had a boyfriend or even kissed a boy. Her only friend at school confronted the boys who molested her and ended up in the hospital.

In 2012, they would become his first Alpha patients.

Dr. James Galloway is a clinical psychologist whose overriding concern for his Alpha patients is that justice is served upon those responsible for their pain and suffering - they must be avenged to heal. His procedures are eccentric and carefully hidden.

They need to be for what's coming; he has other Alpha patients in the process of healing.

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about justice. When a guilty verdict is rendered in court and the defendant is sentenced, the punishment is considered justice for the crime. The criminal owes a metaphorical debt to society. Once that debt is “paid,” the individual re-enters society and attempts to reintegrate. Time may have passed, but does it truly heal all wounds? Those who suffered because of the crime still carry grief, pain, and trauma throughout their lives. While nothing can undo what has happened, resilience can help one find peace.

Or, in the case of Michael McDonald-Low’s latest novel, The Alpha Construct, there may be other ways to achieve retribution. Through two of the big “R”s—revenge and redemption—McDonald-Low takes readers on a journey of those who have suffered, those who have “paid,” and what it means to finally find closure.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and the moral questions explored through its diverse characters. Without revealing too much, the narrative centers on clinical psychologist Dr. James Galloway and his Alpha patients. Through his sessions and unique techniques, Dr. Galloway helps these everyday people feel as though they’ve righted a personal wrong in the world. However, his guidance often leads them to pursue vengeance as a way to soothe their psyches. The story features a complex matrix of “good” and “bad” characters, who make “good” and “bad” choices. Depending on your perspective on justice, you may empathize with some characters’ motives and actions while disapproving of others. This interplay makes your own moral compass a key lens for interpreting the book, which adds a layer of depth and makes discussing it with others particularly engaging.

If you’re looking for a suspenseful story that delves into the complexities of the human mind, The Alpha Construct is an excellent read.
