Slavery remains rampant worldwide. It is estimated that more than 27m slaves exist today, ranging from prostitutes in London to indentured workers in Burma. This popularly written but carefully researched volume has been comprehensively updated. It includes a chapter on different forms of contemporary slavery, a chapter on the Christian roots of the anti-slavery movement, and three detailed case studies, on Sudan, Burma and Uganda. This new edition also includes a special chapter on the Dalits of India, and a section on human trafficking, both with arresting and disturbing case histories. It concludes with a important chapter on action readers can take.
I found this book very interesting as it shows us and tells stories of how there are still many forms of slavery still in practice today in African and Asian countries when many people think it ended a couple hundred years ago but its still a very real thing and a threat to millions because there are currently at least 27 million men women and children to day currently enslaved. There are many stories and eyewitnesses that expose the horrors that are happening in Sudan, Uganda, and Burma because of political and social standards. This book also explores the history of slavery all across the world and how it started. It also does a good job of connecting statistics and numbers to real people which raises more awareness globally. This book is very informative but it does get very repetitive in all of the eyewitnesses accounts. In conclusion the author uses many different forms of examples to bring awareness to the atrocity and show just how widespread this issue is in vulnerable populations. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Was an informative book about slavery in Sudan, Uganda, and Burma (mainly focusing on the child soldiers as well as the girls forced into sexual slavery for those soldiers). It also gives a lot of history on slavery in the past and currently (more-so the past). There were many personal testimonies given of people interviewed who were child soldiers or were forced into sexual exploitation/prostitution.
Not an easy book to read, but essential reading if you want to know about the extent of current day slavery and the impact it continues to have on individuals, families and communities. Written by an amazing, humble woman who has crossed borders and put her own life on the line many times, and campaigns tirelessly for those who have no voice.
It's the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. Oh, is it? Tell that to the 27,000,000 men, women and children who are still enslaved. In Burma, in Africa, in London......! It's universal and IT IS NOT OVER!!!
