Texas Safehouse #5

The Reprobate

Rate this book
People call me a reprobate. I’m known for my humor, my arrogance, and my inability to follow rules. My boss sends me on a mission to protect the cold-as-ice billionaire I love to hate. I plan to push all the man’s buttons.

He’s as irritating—and as hot— as he’s always been. I expected to want him. What I didn’t expect was for my heart to get involved. There are things no one told me about the mission, and our enemies are closing in fast. We have nowhere to go, but my friend’s ranch turned safehouse. Neither of us was made for relationships, but the longer we’re together, the harder it is to deny the way he makes my heart ache for more. I’ve been living on the run, dodging bullets and my past. Can I stay put and give myself a chance at love? This is book 5 in the Texas Safehouse series.

**Warning: this text may contain spoilers**

The Reprobate is book 5 in Sylvia Violet’s Texas Safehouse Series, which I hope is not the last. Every book in the series has been incredible, but Fox and Darren’s relationship gives you a love/hate and control/possessive tale that is intense and steamy.

“You wanted me out of control, and that’s what you’re getting now. I can be a f%$@#&g savage. I can take you down. I can wreck you.”

Fox was briefly introduced in a previous book (The Recluse), but in The Reprobate, we learn more about his connection with Blade, his work with X, and the trauma he’s been unable to overcome as a marine. Fox is hired to protect Darren (an X affiliate and a Zaddy, according to Fox), but unbeknownst to him, Darren is tasked (by X) to protect Fox from a man seeking revenge on Fox for killing his brother. Their sexual tension is palpable, but when their hideouts (luxury and seedy hotels) are uncovered by the enemy, Fox and Darren (while fighting for control and at each other’s throats) must work together (with X and his unlimited resources) to stay one step ahead of their killers, which brings them to seek comfort at Paradise Ranch.

With an action-packed storyline, I loved the cameos from the Texas Safehouse Family (Grant, Jacob, Rhys, TJ, Rogue, Ghost, Blade, and Carlo!). Their teasing and protectiveness of Fox at the ranch and the welcoming of Darren (while dicey at first) illustrated the anchor of family Fox and Darren need.

While strategizing on how to kill their adversary at Paradise Ranch, Fox realizes that his control is diminishing rapidly. To save himself and the burgeoning love/lust with Darren, he needs to confront the pain he has secretly compartmentalized for years because of his actions to save his team overseas (killing a pseudo-friend) and the guilt he feels for what Blade endured when captured and tortured. Darren fares no better by seeking to control every step in his life, from work, relationships, and broken family connections. During a drunk-filled confession, both share their secrets, with Darren revealing his hateful relationship with his father (before and after his death) and the cold and domineering way he lives his life. Their steamy bond (“I wanted to feel the fire I knew was inside him, melting all his ice”) and possessive lovemaking gave you a light BDSM feel, yet it was exhilarating to read and imagine! When these alpha men finally realize their connection is unshakeable, they cannot walk away from each other. When one is captured, the other is tasked with helping develop a plan to rescue the one man who has broken down his walls, possessed his heart and body (insert riding crop), and made him feel whole! I LOVED their steamy HEA.

Overall, The Reprobate illustrated a high-steam, possessive, and love/lust/hate story with two alphas who needed one another to overcome their “wounded” pasts. Sylvia Violet did an excellent job of character development for both Fox and Darren. I wished she had given us more background on Darren’s life, his “seedy” connection with X, and his relationship (or lack thereof) with his sister, not a brief synopsis. Nevertheless, it was an excellent story that I never wanted to end!

***I received an ARC of this book from the author, and this is my honest review. ***

Fox (Randall) & Darren have met and worked together before - and were firmly entrenched in the hate / lust catagory. When Fox is sent on a 'babysitting' job, little does her know that Darren is actually protecting him.

I like the premise, two men to would absolutely deny their need for protection or love, and live to annoy the other.
Forced proximity means the tension rises along with an enemy from Fox's past closing in. We get a few cameos from the usual suspects at the ranch, plus the mob lads too.
Overall a good, fast paced and steamy read - looking forward to the next release from Silvia.

I received an ARC copy and this is my honest review.

Silvia Violet does it again with The Reprobate. I couldn't wait for Fox's story, our 'reprobate' in this band of military bros.  For those who are wondering what exactly a reprobate is, it's basically an unprincipled person, and it perfectly fits Fox.  He marches to the beat of his own drums, masks his deep secrets with humor and doesn't follow the rules and because of this, his past is biting him in the behind but that's okay because enter Darren.  He's what we would call straight lace, by the book, always in charge kind of guy and Fox is the one person getting under his skin, or should I say past his defenses?  Either way, these two are polar opposites that they're just perfect for one another, it only made perfect sense that X has given each a secret assignment, except one of them doesn't know!  So of course, trickery and white lies come into play but chemistry and sexy banter takes over right away. Fox and Darren can't help that pull towards each other and that need to protect; their very own rule book is tossed right out the window because if they want to survive this assignment and explore their feelings, they're going to have to trust one another and work together, a concept that neither of them are too familiar with.

With appearances from the band of military brothers at the Texas Safehouse and their significant others, you know you're in for a treat!  I sure hope they never go away.  I've enjoyed their appearances in the previous stories, and I love how Silvia includes them without taking away from the main couple.  She's written with just enough humor, banter and sexy time that this enemies-to-lovers MM romance is worthy!  As I've mentioned before, I never tire from her stories, bring on some more! Five stars for The Reprobate.  I sure do hope there's more to the series or at least a spinoff of some kind because I just can't get enough!

The Reprobate is the latest book in Silvia Violet’s Texas Safehouse Series and I hope it is not the last because I have enjoyed every book in this series. One of the differences between this book at the others in the series is that we are only briefly introduced to one of the main characters, Fox, in a previous book. Fox is mentioned in previous books because he served with Grant in the marines and appears in The Recluse. He works for X but has not been a major player in the safehouse novels. That does not diminish his importance to the other characters and his backstory relies heavily on the men at the ranch. Fox is a fun character with an amazing backstory.
Fox is tasked by Xavier to protect Darren, whom he had a brief encounter with at a previous time. This run in is mentioned but is not fully explained in the story, except to say that these men do not like each other. Darren is wealthy, polished, and refined but still waters run deep and as the story unfolds, we learn there is a lot to Darren that Fox does not realize. They both have their secrets but they are both drawn towards each other.
This is a great enemy to lovers story with action, and a lot of heat. Without giving any spoilers away, Silvia Violet brings in some favorite characters from other books and we can check in on how some other couples are doing. I enjoyed the dynamic between Fox and Darren and the development of their relationship. I do feel as if there are some parts of the story that were not fully explained to the reader especially about Darren, his business and his relationship to Xavier but it doesn’t hurt the main focus of the story. Overall, it is a great story with a HEA.

So different, yet so perfect for each other! This book absolutely wowed me! Continuing in the series of the Texas Safehouse, Fox and Darren are two broken and very different men from very different backgrounds. They've met before and boy did they irritate each other. Fox is a loose cannon. He runs head first into action without much thought. Darren on the other hand needs to be in control, to be organized and to plan in advance then review his plan until it's perfect and he implements it.

They are paired up by Fox's boss X but there is a big surprise and plenty of action and creative plot twists while these two men, who both have secrets from their past that they are afraid will make them vulnerable if they are discovered, are forced into close proximity and get to know each other. Their aggression and frustration in the beginning turns into passion. Desire had been simmering just under the surface all along.

The beginning interactions between Fox and Darren are funny, and I actually laughed out loud in some parts. The book takes us out of Paradise Ranch in the beginning, but all roads lead to the Texas Safehouse and they end up there before the heavy action takes them elsewhere. All of my favorite characters from this series show up to support Fox, their brother-in-arms, and Darren by default.

Eventually these two fall for each other, and I really think they are one of my favorite couples because they are each so opposite and strong-willed. It makes the depth of their love for each other so special. One of my favorite lines from the book is when they admit to each other that they love each other. Darren says "It really must be that damn ranch." and Fox replies "No. It's just you. You made me love you." Swoon worthy!

Adversaries with heated but also hilarious tit-for-tac exchanges that...
from their first meeting create them as initial enemies. To Darren Fox is mule headed SOB and as arrogant as sin. Now on the flip side of the coin there's Darren, a self-made millionaire (or maybe billionaire) who has to control every aspect of his business ventures. His only release of control is his PA Lawson who Ms. Violet portrays as a breath of fresh sassiness to Darren's unflinching hold on his business. From an economic standpoint each comes from different worlds; one privileged and one from the wrong side of the tracks but with very similar paternal disregard and brute treatment. It's not until further into their stories that each reveals these aspects. For Fox his military involvement in Afghanistan takes a very personal toll on his psychic as he believes his going off target on his own only caused Blade to fall into the insurgents' paws. It was a very personal reaction for Fox. Darren had no one other than his sister Rebecca close to him. He was a man unto himself. The mysterious elements of these two oh so opposites are unveiled well into this book when both are drunk and spill their histories to each other; often in amusing incidental narratives. The chapters at Paradise Ranch reintroduce the brothers Grant, Rhys, Riley and Blade who assist Fox and Dare completing the covert assignment "X" had given the two. The dynamic between these two is explosive, intense and worth every word Ms. Violet put to paper. This 5th book was a pleasure for me to read and this review via Bookfunnel is totally voluntary.

This is the 5th book of the Texas Safehouse series & it’s a wild ride. This is an enemies-to-lovers that had me feeling a whole bunch of different emotions. There were times were the banter between Dare & Fox had me chuckling to myself, there were moments where my heart hurt for each of them, & let’s be honest here - the spice in this was incredible 🔥🌶 Both men were fighting personal demons & when they finally let the past in the open, they became one hell of a team. It was great to see that they did eventually end up at Grants Safehouse, it’s always a pleasure when the previous couples are involved to help protect one of their own. (Plus, Devil makes an appearance & he is just my personal favorite 😍) Between Darren’s control freak tendencies, Fox’s “don’t think, just do” personality, it really is opposites attract but somehow works for them because at the end of the day all they want to do is protect & hold one another. There is a line In the book that I think summed them both up perfectly: “The kind you had to be to survive the situation you were in.”
I think that is beautifully said about both of them. While I felt like this book was pretty different from the previous four, I thought it was amazing. I cannot wait to see whose next & what happens during the next mission.

I was lucky enough to have received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Just okay. I never really connected with either MC, and their dynamic wasn’t my favorite. Their feelings for each other didn’t come across as strong or passionate to me at all.

It’s been a while since I’ve read this author, but I wanted to finish this series. In saying that, I’m not sure if it’s common for this author to not describe her characters’ physical features, but there’s very little description for either Darren or Fox. So I couldn’t picture them in my head while reading. This is one reason for me not being able to connect. I am assuming Fox is bigger since he carries Darren at times, but it’s not specifically stated. Everything was very vague.

The writing needs another proofread. There are quite a few errors and typos, as well as several continuity issues. Overall, the story isn’t bad. The plot is decent. The pacing is okay. The action and tension could have definitely been turned up some though.

I never really understood why Darren and Fox dislike each other in the beginning? They each think the other thinks they’re too good for everyone else? I’m not really sure. Again, very vague (or just weak setup). The spice is medium, but not super detailed. There is spanking. I wouldn’t say it’s a kink as much as it’s something Darren does to Fox to show dominance. But Fox does like it. Again, it’s not very detailed either.

Glad I finished the series, but it wasn’t my favorite. Just not very intriguing.

This is the 5th book in the Texas Safehouse Series. It can be read as a standalone but you really need to read them in order to understand all the secondary characters and how they fit into the story. This story is about Fox and Darren. Fox is ordered to provide security Darren by his boss X. Not happy about the assignment he is prepared to do his job. The only bright spot to Fox is that Darren detests him and it will be an even more inconvenient pairing to him. However things are not as they firsts seem. Darren has been forced by X to pretend to need protection. His actual job is to protect Fox. Things are about to get crazy. Both men are control freaks and compromise doesn't seem to be a word they recognize. This is their story. Hang on for a roller coaster ride of action. In order to bring the threat to ground, they go back to the ranch. It is easier to defend and they will have home ground advantage there. This part of the book is why you need to have read the previous books first. The secondary characters really come into play at the Ranch. This is a great book. I really enjoyed it. It is well written and very easy to read.

I received a free copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading by Silvia Violet. Didn’t realize that there were 4 books in the “Texas Safehouse” series so I got some catching up to do. I really enjoyed this one because of the action and the intense tension of trying to nab the bad guys. Also I was intrigued by why Fox and Darren were requested to protect each others without them knowing. I had to read nearly the whole book to find out what was Fox’s secret that got him into the mess and dragging others as well. A wonderful reading!

The story focuses on Fox who was getting ready to head out on a badly needed vacation after completing one assignment but was requested by his boss to protect this person since he had the “documents” to take a syndicate down. After arguing with the boss, he begrudgingly agreed to do it. In the meantime, Darren, a business owner was asked to protect Fox but pretend to be the one who needed protection. The thing is they hate each others’ guts and would push their buttons. That’s where I’m going to stop and have you pick up the book to read to find out what happens and what Fox’s secret was. A 5 stars reading from me!

Fox is a reprobate as he is humourous, arrogant and unable to follow the rules. He is sent on a mission to protect cold-as-ice billionaire Darren who he loves to hate. His plan is to protect him while pushing all of his buttons. Darren is hot and Fox expected to want him but he never expected his heart to get involved too. There are things no one told me about the mission, and our enemies are closing in fast. We have nowhere to go, but my friend’s ranch turned safehouse. Neither of us was made for relationships, but the longer they’re together, the harder it is to deny the way he makes Fox's heart ache for more. Fox has been living on the run, dodging bullets and his past. Can he stay put and give himself a chance at love?

I really enjoyed this love-hate story where the whole story changed midway through to something else completely unexpected. The relationship between Fox and Darren started with some hate sex but that soon changed into something more addictive between them both which soon became life-affirming and showed the way that they felt about each other. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is an MM story with mature content.

Fox and Darren were perfect for each other in the best ways

I'm going to have to keep this short as I don't want to give anything away and I'm bound to if I don't keep it quick as I just want to splurge about how awesome this was. Fox and Darren were honestly hilarious. At first glance these two could not be worse for each other. They disliked each other and honestly just didn't seem to fit at all. However, once you get to spend a bit more time with them and see the way they interact it actually becomes clear that all their jagged edges line up perfectly to create something really special. At their core, they care about the same things and that's what's important. They see a possibility in each other and will both equally fight to defend it. I love that we got to see old faces at the safehouse. It's always like a little home coming and it just puts a smile on my face. Definitely another great addition!

I love Silvia Violet, I think I've read everything she's wrote since I found Devil. This is book 5 in the Texas Safehouse Series, The Reprobate, Fox and Darren's story, two alpha men fighting for control. Of course we met Fox in book 4, briefly. We learn more about him in this one and his connection to previous character's. I would have liked to have learned a little more about Darren but maybe that's just me.
Of course X is involved in this, Fox thinks he's hired to protect Darren but really Darren is protecting Fox. They butt heads alot but really it's sexual tension. Of course it's a HEA just like we like it, plenty of steam.
We get some great cameos from previous character's but I'll never be happy till I read Devil & Joe together as well as Niall & Marco ❤️ my favourite couples!
It was a good read and I can't wait to see what's next!
I received an ARC for an honest review.

This is a very enjoyable book in the Texas Safehouse series. In this book, X asks Fox to take on a mission to guard Darren, who secretly has a mission from X to protect Fox from going off half-cocked when his enemies enter the country to kill Fox. The two men have met briefly before and there were angry sparks at the time causing the two men to feel that they hate each other. Now, they will be spending a week or so together and it becomes apparent that hate and love are not so opposite as they thought. The chemistry of these two alpha males is off-the-charts, with both men vying for dominance. In the meantime, they continue to be pursued and the Texas Safehouse group, as well as the Marchesi men become involved. This book has tons of action, danger, rough passion, enduring friendships, and a beautiful forever love.

All the sides

I love seeing two stubborn men unravel each other, to discover who they are at their core. It’s even better when they do and find they fit together like a glove.

“I needed him wild like this. I needed him to really truly let go, to let me see who he really was, but once he did, there was no going back. I wasn’t ever going to be able to forget what this was like. I was never going to stop wanting it.
And that was the most dangerous thing of all.”

I’m not sure who’s more dangerous, Fox or Darren, but I do know they should both come with a warning label for your heart. Or maybe they’ll take you by surprise, kinda like a common friend did in this one. Either way, you’ll want to dive into this fast-paced thrilling world that’s full of danger, sexy men, and even sexier times.

Fox and Darren story was intense, hot and funny, and with an interesting premise that set in motion the events that followed.
It was interesting to see how Fox interacted with the other occupants at the ranch, as well as the way they acted in the face of a new danger. I liked how old characters were incorporated in this new mission and they way they meshed together.
The danger and adrenaline are high and along with the spicy and loving moments will make this journey a memorable one
I liked their dynamic, courtship, and they way they learn to open up and accept their faults and strength, the way they trust in each other and in their entourage to have their back.
I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to see what happens next.

I loved this book! Fox and Darren couldn't be more different, but the connection was remarkable when they started to know each other. They each had dominant characteristics, but Darren's were off the chart. I loved his possessiveness, although we didn't see that immediately. And anyone that can bait X so casually is a supreme alpha male!!!

As always, it's so nice to hear from past characters that are beloved. (Not wanting to be too specific since I don't want to give spoilers.)

This is the fifth book in the Texas Safehouse series, and each book has been unique in itself. I have devoured the entire series so far. I received an ARC for my honest review, and I highly recommend this book and the entire series.

This was just okay for me. I liked Fox. And I liked Darren. But I didn’t feel a ton of chemistry between the two.

Both Fox and Darren have an intense dislike for one another from the beginning. I actually found their dislike of each other more endearing than their romance. I like the barbs that were traded back and forth. I like that ice man Darren could freeze Fox with a look.

I also enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story. Fox dealing with his past and Darren being there by his side. It worked in a friendship way for me. That’s not to say I didn’t like the book, I did, but after the last few have been so good for me, this just didn’t live up to expectation. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This is a great series, with compelling characters and plenty of action. This book is Fox and Darren’s story, and it’s an excellent take on the enemies to lovers trope. I loved the tension in their relationship, how easily they push each other’s buttons. These two are super stubborn and fight their chemistry, but I loved all the snark and posturing before they inevitably give in. Plus, I was so happy they end up at the Safehouse, were they get an assist from Grant and crew. A entertaining action packed read, I enjoyed spending time in this world.

4.5 Stars!

I devoured and loved every moment of Fox and Darren's story. I loved how Fox was able to get under Darren's icy armor. When they aren't trading barbs and actually work together, they are a pretty unstoppable force. I was glad that Fox was able to tell Darren about the pieces in his past that were haunting him in more than one way. I loved seeing all the Texas Safehouse guys again; they are a blast and the teasing was awesome as usual. Devil is always a fun wild card in the face of any situation. I kind of wished I had gotten a better understanding of Darren's past and current work, but we got enough to understand that he was more powerful and dangerous than Fox expected. I'm still smiling about X's reaction to Fox and Darren's new relationship.

Sexy and fast paced

Fox is a go with the flow, fly by the seat of your pants guy from the wrong side of the tracks.
Darren is a straight laced, by the books very successful businesses owner.
The animosity between them is really just a cover for the scorching hot UST between them.
The snarky banter they constantly sling at each other is absolutely hilarious.
Fox is sent in to guard Darren which is problem all on it's own but then Fox's past comes barreling back in.
As they're on the run they slowly
get to know one another and realize they have much more in common than not.
Plenty of fast paced action, danger and drama kept me thoroughly engaged.

I love this series - this book features Fox and Darren. X called Fox letting him know he had a job for him protecting Darren. At the same time X called Darren letting him know that Fox’s past caught up to him. After meeting and going to a secure location, they were found and had to make a run for it. Along the way, they started realizing that they had feelings for each other. It was great to see Grant, Rhys and and Rogue again as they ended up at the ranch. Loved the high heat, world building, action and chemistry between them. Here is hoping Lawson gets a book.

Simply amazing!

I loved this book! It’s Fox’s turn and he’s in a bit of trouble. X will call in a favor from his friend Darren and the sparks start flying immediately! I love how the two profess to hate each other but end up changing that as the story unfolds. As with the rest of the series, there is a bit of danger, a whole lot of sass and sarcasm from Fox’s friends and when the smoke clears, two men who swore they’d never, find love in each other’s arms.

I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

The Reprobate is a fantastic way to end the Texas Safehouse series. For me, this novel was the best in the series. The main characters were fleshed out well, and the back story was well thought out and felt organic with the rest of the series. The cameos of the side characters were fantastic and hilarious, and it was great to see the characters from this series and other series. And the steam, holy wow! The chemistry between Fox and Darren practically melted my tablet! Overall, this novel was a fun and action-packed conclusion to this series.

The Reprobate... Fox and Darren

Both men owe "X" a favor. When Fox was in the Marines he killed a man. Now, unbeknownst to him, his brother is after Fox. So "X" tells Fox he needs him to guard Darren. Then he calls Darren and tells him to guard Fox, but pretend he's the one who needs to be guarded.
They don't get along, pushing each other's buttons, but they are attracted to each other. As things get more complicated and dangerous, they end up back at the ranch. Great addition to the Texas Safehouse Series. This book has humor, angst, suspense, steam and a HEA.

We met Fox in Blades book, he was a marine under Grants command as well. He has a secret that he's been carrying alone for years. When it comes back to bite him in the a$$, he’s forced to work with a man he can’t stand but is also incredibly hot. That feeling goes both ways. Just like the rest of the series we’ve got found family, brotherhood, plenty of old faces and a couple new ones. This was a perfect flow from book 4. It had sweet and some very nice spicy scenes. There’s some action and bullets. I look forward to see if there will be more books in this series.

The Reprobate is book five in this series. This wasn't what I would call a enemies to lover trope. It was love-hate-love. These two are both control freaks, more so Darren then Fox. But they both want to be in charge. These two were hired to protect each other, unbeknownst to them by X. Both of these men have a lot of baggage to unpack. I loved the interaction and barbs they threw at each other. It was interesting to see these tough men, let themselves become vulnerable with each other. I enjoyed this story and I wonder if X was playing matchmaker. This was an action packed book.

Fox and Darren have to be the most fun romance in this series! I had no idea what to expect as I knew nothing about Darren and not that much about Fox. I definitely did not expect to smile and laugh so much! These two loved to hate each other and their chemistry flew all the way off the charts! It was just so much fun surrounded by all the intense attraction. They are both men with secrets, so we have some great background plot to balance out the romance. This one was nonstop hot!
