Outre Mer

Rate this book
"My name is Janni. I am a duranni, a native of Outre Mer. I have a mind. I believe that I have a soul. I am a person." Born into Awakened society, Janni believes that people of all origins can live and work together. He does not understand why Earth sends its death squads into the forests of his homeland to hunt down educated duranni like him. Trained by his human worldmates, Janni leads a mission to rid Outre Mer of its jailers. Many on Earth are content to let Outre Mer go its own way. But a clique of policy makers and shadowy operatives goes beyond the pale to make sure that doesn't happen. Michael Puttré draws on his experience as an international aerospace, defense, and technology journalist to craft believable worlds in an age of starships. "Outre Mer" is a character-driven story of people on all sides of a conflict struggling to follow their orders, their convictions, and their instincts without always knowing why.

Since the days of Tom Clancy, people have lauded techno-thrillers and their authors for 'edge of the seat excitement' and 'high tech adventure.' As former naval aviator and sometime SAM site hunter, I'd like to say that lots of the reviewers and critics didn't know what they were talking about; neither did some of the authors.

Mike Puttre does. He knows exactly what he's talking about, and so, even when his near-future technologies are partly or wholly the innovation of Puttre's fertile mind, it WORKS. The technology works, the world works, the universe works.

But that's not the best part. World creation and technology are really just the props and special effects department behind the creation that is a good Sci-Fi novel. In the end, it's going to come down to the characters and the plot.

I will reveal nothing--or everything--when I say that two things impressed me over and over again. One was how very real the characters were. They have lives; they scratch when they itch; they have motivations, and sometimes those motivations, as is all too rare in speculative fiction, aren't exactly clear to the players themselves. The plot unwinds remorselessly; the morality of the situation slips away into a blur of contextual rationalizations.

Just like they do in the real world.

And yet, in the end...

Heh. In the end, its a great book. And that's all I'm going to say. Go buy your own.

I bought this book on a friend's recommendation, and am very happy I did.

Puttre did an excellent job universe building, creating highly complex political, social, and religious forces in conflict with each other. The technology is believable and well thought out (no simple "blasters" or "laser cannons"). The battles were very well written and believable engagements.

The characters were a rich cast of well-defined people (and one "alien"). Their motivations, strengths, and flaws made them believable and real.

It took me a little while to get into the book. Stick with it and you will be rewarded. The tension and action really ramp up midway through Outre Mer. I thought the climax (which was tension filled) was a little rushed. I wanted more! Alas, the story ended.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from Puttre.

Good hard SciFi story with interesting world building. I liked the characters and the political situation they were dealing with. The combat scenes were well written and pacing throughout the story was very good. Would welcome more stories in this universe.
