Darkened Skies #2

Into Whispering Shadows

Rate this book
Whispers of truth often linger in darkness.

After fleeing the Helosian Empire, Astrea and her friends follow the trail of clues north in search of the mystery-cloaked void mages known as the Paragon. Crossing the border into Novaria, the group finds the capital city on high alert after a string of murders.

Just like in Kalama, the victims bear the mark of void magic—a clear display of brazenness as the shadows’ influence continues to grow across the continent.

Determined to stop the killers and uncover the secrets of the Paragon, the group teams up with Novaria's ruler, the Grand Duchess Ysabel. But with conspiracies and deceit at every turn, Astrea begins to question everything she thought she knew—not just about the world, but about herself and her magic.

Only one thing is clear: Astrea is being hunted. And this time, no one can save her.

I just want to give Az and Jin a big hug. This book was such an emotional rollercoaster in the best way. I audibly gasped at multiple times from the unexpected revelations, which most of the time when I read, I can spot from miles away.

Az, Jin and their crew go through the unthinkable in this book, as they fled Helosia and sought refuge in the same country they had been researching in book one Under Darkened Skies, Novaria. This book had me feeling what Az feels right with her as she experiences a range of emotions: grief, terror, fear, nightmares, anxiety, relief, and Astrea spends a lot of her time in this book honing in her skills to protect her energy and emotions and learn to fight back. Astrea, Jin and their crew devote their days to training and unraveling the mysteries around them and look for allies. Many questions arise: What could the Paragon possibly want with Astrea, “the little Lightbringer”? What does Emperor Auris with the void magic? Is anywhere on the continent safe? Will they ever find the answers? I can’t wait to see what H. E. Bauman has in store for their future!

Thank you H. E. Bauman for allowing me to be part of the e-arc team, you are the sweetest author! This review was of my own accord, and I hope more people discover this cozy, mystery/high fantasy series!

Oh. My. God.

Y’all.

Once again, the world building that this author does is phenomenal. I felt like I was IN this book with all of these characters. And the characters…I fall more and more in love with them (okay Jin) as this story unfolds and takes me on this wild journey. Am I upset I have to wait until the next book for more answers and excitement? Yes, but is it worth it? Absolutely yes!

I went into this series admittedly hesitant because it’s a little outside my current reading mood but I’ve been so pleasantly surprised over and over again. This book did have two very mild (in my opinion) spicy scenes which was a sloooooooow burn that started in book one and -finally- happened in book two but for these characters and the setting it was perfect. I’m normally a “smutty romance novel reader” so this was one of the big differences for me.

I think I’m rambling.

Big things for me that I loved:
-character development (ASTREAAAAAA)
-banter (casually between all characters)
-the villain! I’m still so wrapped up in figuring it out
-the world/plot building
-the strength of the friendships
-🌶️🌶️

Things I didn’t like:
-having to be patient for the next book 😂

Huge shout out to the author and their team for gifting me an ARC copy of this book and allowing me to not only read it first, but then trusting me with a review afterwards. I can’t wait for the next book!💖

Gosh, I just absolutely love this series! And Into Whispering Shadows kept me fully engaged from start to finish. The political intrigue, travel, characters and issues they face are all so well written that it's hard to put this book down.

I stayed up way too late many nights.

Jin & Az and their slow burn romance was told so perfectly. H.E had me begging for more so early on, but she knew, she knew when to give us more. Absolutely adore these two together and as individuals!

So ready for book 3!!

Into the Whispering Shadows had me in a vice grip from start to finish.

The book kicks off following the explosive ending to book 2, hitting the ground running pretty quickly. For me, this book is all about the emotional, found family moments between the group. The strengthening bonds in this group just give you all the feelings. H.E. does a wonderful job of really adding so many layers to this group -- the comradery, the banter, the love and it is so powerful. I love their scenes together.

Even more so the slow burn that is Jin and Astrea. This two have *finally* found a way back to each other and when they finally give in, this reader 100 percent cheered them on, out aloud, with a big woo-hoo! I love how H.E. has developed this relationship over time. The trust, the green flags, the kick your feet moments. I enjoyed everything about it. Has it been a easy road for either of them? No, but man the slow burn is worth it.

H.E. also does a beautiful job with Astrea's character development. Our girl has been through a lot and it is most definitely outside her comfort zone at times. But H.E. is just a queen of character development and she does a wonderful job of really showing us true change over time in Astrea that is both believable and emotional. Her journey has been one that I truly love getting to watch as she grows as a character in the books.

I also love how H.E. balances the plot in her story. These emotional moments of romance and found family flow beautifully into this growing plot of uneasy political alliances, foes both the known and those rising from both the shadows, and the must larger narrative of what the is going on with void magic. I loved mysterious plot and the adventure H.E. is taking us on.

--

I also read the audiobook so I just wanted to do a shoutout to narrator, Brielle Rose, who makes this whole series an immersive with her performance. The characters are distinct and the narratives comes to life as she reads. I always find myself swept up in the world of these books!

4.5/5 (rounded up to 5)

Book 2 starts off exactly where we left off in book 1, with our key characters (including FMC [Astrea] a highly relatable, academically-minded librarian/lightbringer and MMC [Jin] a charismatic and handsome prince/fireweaver) having escaped their home nation and travelling by airship to a neighbouring nation across the continent to an unknown reception. This time around we get into the hidden motives behind the actions from book 1 and explore the devastating consequences our the main characters actions.

Living the life of rebels, having fled their home under violent circumstances and betraying their king, Astrea begins to learn more about her power as she searches for answers to the mystery that is the Paragon (the league of void magic mages), while supporting her friends ambitions to overthrow her farther (the king). With the prefect blend of quiet library cozy scenes and wild adventures, this book continues to live up to the fantastic world-building standards set by book 1.

Slow-burn lovers will be as delighted as I was to be rewarded for our patience with all the smutty goodness. For those that don’t like that sort of thing, while these scenes certainly aren’t closed door, they do not get in the way of the plot and romance is at their core. It’s all very sweet even when a good fan might be needed. Astrea and Jin’s romance is heart-warming and perfectly pitched (so much so that I have my suspicions – has everyone forgotten about that bag Jin took off the airship?!?!). Maybe I have trust issues, but this series has taught me to look out for the sting in the tail, with betrayal around every bend.

It is a rare thing for me to like the second book more than the first but, overall, I really do. The only reason I didn’t give this 5*s is the slight annoyance I feel with the FMC’s sudden lack of confidence in herself and the subsequent moaning and (teenage-like) temper tantrums. This behaviour seems a little out of sorts for her based on book one and the expected behaviour of a 24 year old. That said, if this situation were reality, a woman who had been completely sheltered and in control her entire life would react very unfavourably when thrown into life and death situations. I am hoping that she grows out of this in book 3 as she develops her powers and realises she cannot control everything in a war.

Overall, I loved this book and I am so glad that I am able to dive straight into book 3 because that ending was so intense and dramatic, I have to know what comes next! I would highly recommend this series to those who love political intrigue, characters with complex motivations and unique magic systems.

I was delighted to receive an e-ARC copy in advance of the release and cannot wait to start Book 3.

I first want to thank H.E. Bauman for the ALC (Advanced Listener Copy).

What happens after you flee the only home you’ve ever known due to an infringing darkness coming from all sides? How do you cope with having to leave loved ones behind? How do you convince others to join your side to fight with you against this growing threat? “Into Whispering Shadows” by H.E. Bauman explores all of this while also pouring more into the romance between Jin and As.

I absolutely loved this book so much. The constant mystery of what’s going on behind the scenes, the romance that actually feels real instead of instant, the insecurities, and encouragement between friends. There is so much happening that it’s hard to truly describe this book as one genre.

While the world building isn’t as much in this book as the last since they’re in hiding, the little bit we do get is exceptional. I was also really impressed with how the politics was done. So many times in books, we either get factions completely against or completely for. Rarely have I read a fantasy novel where there is actual discussion, planning, and debate laid out in the story for us to experience the tension.

The narrator, Brielle Rose, also did a phenomenal job. She was able to portray the intensity and panic of certain moments while also having a lighter tone for the more mundane or comedic aspects of the story.

I do want to let everyone know this is the first book in the series that has open door romance. While I skimmed through it (with permission from the author as that’s one thing I struggle to read), from what I could tell, it seemed realistic and well done. I also want to give a content warning that there is some drugging/torture later in the story that could be a trigger for some as it was very well written to the point I could almost feel the pain. Some people can handle that, but I know some may struggle, so I wanted to give a fair warning.

“Into Whispering Shadows” by H.E. Bauman was an amazing second book in the Darkened Skies series. There is still a decent amount of cursing, and, as mentioned above, this book does have open door romance, so I would only recommend it for an adult audience. While the official genre is romantasy, there is also mystery, adventure, action, and comedy all mixed in. I am so excited to continue this series! This is definitely one to check out!

Amazing second installment

I don’t even know where to start. I love this series. I love these characters. I love the world and the plot.

Book two took a little longer for me to get into, which is why I technically have it a 4.5 and not solid 5 stars, but holy shit was it worth it. The last 20% had me in a chokehold. Screaming, crying, throwing up.

I so, so wish this series had multiple POVs. Not because it needs it (it really doesn’t) but because I LOVE all the side characters and I want to spend time in their heads as well. The side romances (the established one and those hinted at) and dynamics are everything. I can’t wait to get to book 3 and see how they develop (Adi + you know who)

Speaking of romance development, I absolutely adored how Astrea and Jin progressed in their relationship in this book. They’re so sweet and perfect for each other. I love them to bits, and everyone needs a Jin in their lives.

I love how we got to see more of the world, and how much the world building expanded overall. The mysteries of the Paragon are written so well. EVERYTHING is written so well. It’ll never seize to amaze me how H.E. manages to write such a deep third person narrative. It literally feels exactly like reading first person but with that more adult, epic, fairytaley style you get with third person POV (imo)

If you haven’t picked up the first book, Under Darkened Skies, yet, what are you waiting for?? IWS was significantly darker than UDS, though, so keep that in mind and make sure to check trigger warnings!

This book picks up a few weeks after the ending of book one, which I loved very much. But this book was from a whole other sort of level.

When I started this book, I was so excited to be back in this world and to spend more time with these amazing characters and the new ones we got to know.

This book held a lot of emotions, and with a lot I men a lot cause the second halve was full of it. This book was heartbreaking, my heart still aches after finishing this book. Az went through so much and the thing that I admire the most about her, is how she handles everything. While she may think that she isn't strong or that she can't stand on her own, she proves everytime again she is. The last sentence of this book is evidence enough.

Of course she has an amazing support system. Especially Jin, who sometimes needs to be kicked in the ass so he can pull himself togheter. But all her friends care so much about her and that 3the beauty in this whole story. She is never alone, she has always her friends who she can count on, even if she has lost hope. Even if it's all dark, they are the light in her life. They are her found family.

I could keep going about this amazing book but I think what I am trying here to say, is read this amazing book! You will not regret it!

Last but not least I want to thank the author for providing me with an earc.

This book starts off really digging into the mystery surrounding them. Focused mainly on the Paragon.

There is a lot of politic issues happening within the story. Along with relationships coming to light with the MCs and the side characters.

Varojin and Astrea have such a solid friendship that building their relationship on top of that just makes it so much better. I really enjoy their banter and how they have reconnected after their time apart. Both have grown and they are learning about each other again.

However, they have previous wounds that create issues. It does bother me that Astrea is constantly undervaluing herself. And this puts extra strain on herself. And eventually causes her to lash out.

As things with the Paragon become more tense and continue to escalate lives are in jeopardy.

I do like that even though the story is unfinished we were not left with a major cliffhanger. The adventure comes to a pause point. Where there are still many unanswered questions. But no one’s life is hanging precariously in the balance.

I can’t wait to continue this series. And learn more about all the characters as well as what is happening with the Paragon

I received this book as an ARC for free.

'Into whispering shadows' is a sequel to the previous one ‘Under Darkened Skies’ and it is advised to complete the first part before starting this. I haven’t read the first book yet but this one is wow! Looking at the mystery, adventure, love, and magic I couldn’t stop myself from diving into this book. Though it’s slow moving at the start, it picks up the pace as the story moves all. The author had me hooked to the book, right from the blurb to the cover.

There is so much splendour, love, and development of characters in ‘Into Whispering Shadows.’ With the way she captures the emotional upheaval Astrea experiences, H.E. drew me to tears and had me on edge. The narration had me deeply involved in the story such that I was going through every emotion of the character. I was so engrossed in this one that I was unable to put it down before completing!

Right now, I'm obsessed with this book. It left me wanting for more and I'm eager to learn what occurs next. This book is absolutely worth reading, and I eagerly anticipate what the upcoming parts will be carrying.

Highly recommended for all fantasy lovers!

This series is taking over my life and I’m not mad about it.

Into Whispering Shadows is another amazing addition to the Darkened Skies series! The mystery introduced in Under Darkened Skies built wonderfully in this one, and I wish I could go into it more than that but I’m worried I’d go into spoiler territory. Suffice it to say, the elements we learn about in IWS will have you wanting even more.

We also get to see an FMC who is scared, out of her element, and desperate to be neither. We don’t often get to see that in books, especially fantasies set in worlds other than our own. Astrea will definitely reach readers who haven’t found themselves on a page quite like this before and make them feel seen ❤️

And the romance! I love Az and Jin. They’re such a healthy pairing and it makes me very happy ❤️ I’m still over here wanting to give Jin a hug, but this time I’m wanting him to give me one even more. This thing got emotional and he seems like a good hugger.

All of the relationships, honestly, are very well done! Supportive friendships, uneasy new alliances, all of them fantastic to read.

I could go on. I would. But again, I want to avoid spoilers. Read these books!!

So…I binged this book. H.E. does it again as she left me reeling with all the emotions I experienced while reading this story. From anticipation, worry, happiness, and relief - I kinda felt like Astrea to a degree. This story picks up immediately where the last one left off as Astrea and the gang adjust to being in a foreign country as they navigate government politics while continuing their investigation into void magic and the Paragon. Without being spoilery, things progress as they encounter more questions than answers. The story is well paced and I loved the development that occurs not only between the group as a whole but also Az and Jin. The story is not without strife as the group struggles to find out the truth. The book leaves you wanting more and I’m excited to find out what happens next. This is definitely worth reading in my opinion and I patiently wait to see what H.E. comes out with next.

What a great sequel in the Darkened Skies series. No second book syndrome here, if anything I think I liked this one even more than the first!

Book 2 has that same atmospheric style that I loved from book one, which is inherently a slower paced book, but I felt like Bauman really nailed the pacing in this book.

I love Astrea's character arc. She is still the same person that she is in the first book and is working through her own struggles but we see a new strength in her that I absolutely loved!

That slow burn payoff was perfect! So worth it and just right. Is it possible to love Varojin even more?

I loved the new characters that were introduced and I can't wait to learn more about Lucian who is still something of a mystery.

We get a little insight into some of the questions from book 1 but there are still more questions than answers and I can't wait to see what is revealed in book 3.

I loved Under Darkened Skies (book 1) and Forged by Flames (book 2). They were outstanding books, and I gave them both 5 stars. Into Whispering Shadows blows them out of the water.

H. E. Bauman has outdone herself with this latest installment of the Darkened Skies series.

It's not as slow of a start as book 1, since we pick up almost exactly where book 1 ended, and the romance progresses in a truly delightful way. Some new characters are introduced, including another lightbringer, and I really loved seeing how they used their magic differently from Astrea. And we get to see more of Adi which, let's face it, is a total win.

The last quarter or so of the book is an emotional journey -- one that I will gladly go on again and again. This book had me laughing, crying, and grinning like a fool.

If you enjoy well-defined, well-developed, believable characters who stay true to themselves through one heck of an emotional ride... If you enjoy magic, mystery, and angst... If you liked book 1 but wanted it to ramp up a little faster... You'll love Into Whispering Shadows.

Thank you so much to the author for an arc!

I loved this book! It was just as good as the first one if not better!🤭

This book was a real rollercoaster! I loved being there with the characters through it all! I really felt as If I was there and part of their amazing friend group.

I had an absolute blast reading more about Astrea and how she trained and practiced her powers. It was so interesting! We also got a glimpse of her grief and anxiety. Her emotions felt so raw and real. Also I just wanted to give Astrea a big hug! I really felt for her in this book.🥺

Jin was of course charming as always! I really liked him in this book and how protective he was of Astrea!🤭 Also can I just say possessive and in love Jin is my favourite thing ever! I mean he is the most caring mmc ever!!

On an other note I was eating up the Ellie and Nicos crumbs! Even though they aren’t the main couple I just love the chemistry between them!

The last 50ish pages of this book were quite the whirlwind! It kept me on the edge of my seat!

This book also sets up book 3 which I’m dying to have in my hands right now!!

Overall I just love this author’s writing so much and I can’t wait for the other books in the series!

This book was such an emotional roller coaster and I loved every second of it. The plot, the political intrigue the characters and the problems they face through the book just kept me engaged and wanting to read more and more of the book. The story had many twist and turns that I couldn’t see coming, some making me really shocked. The author does a phenomenal job at making you love and care for the characters that she has created. Az and Jin truly deserve a big long hug because they went through so much in this book. The world building was so immersive, I didn’t have any problem imagining the scenes and getting lost in the book. Overall this book series is just amazing! If you are wondering about giving this book a chance then I say go for it because you will not be disappointed with it. I absolutely recommend this book and cannot wait for the next installment in this AMAZING series!

This book continues the adventures of Astrea and her companions.

This book is more for adults, with more R-rated language and the romance heats up into a sex scene. I still really like the characters. They're supportive of each and are a close-knit group of friends/family. The new characters they meet in this book were also well-done. They make the story worth reading, but, as in the first book, the action doesn't kick in until the last quarter. It makes for slow-going until there. I kept expecting twists or something to happen, but it doesn't. For readers who prefer character-driven, leisurely-paced fantasy mysteries, this should be right up their alley! The prose is solid and the likeable characters make you care about what happens to them.

I'm rating this generously because I liked the first book and I still think there's potential in the story. But damn was this book hard to get through.
The last 30% I basically just skimmed through because there really wasn't a lot you could miss anyway. For the first 85-90% of the book nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. They read books. Have tedious conversations. And the main couple gets together which in and of itself is rather uninteresting. The "action" towards the end of the book is resolved extremely quickly and not used as a cliffhanger to entice the reader to continue reading.
There're three more books in the series and each of them has over 600 pages. I somehow doubt that there's enough content to fill them all in a meaningful way.

I love this series so much! The first book, Under Darkened Skies, introduced us to characters who make a lasting impact on you. And then the second book builds on that. The slow burn tension comes to a head in this one. And the relationship that blossoms is beautiful. The mystery expands in this book leaving you with more questions. I love the friendships and found family throughout. You see vulnerability, strength, self-growth, and loyalty. I NEED the next book! H.E. Bauman just keeps getting better and bringing more to the story that readers are going to love.

In this 2nd book of this series, we continue to follow Astrea, Jin and their friends as they flee for their lives and try to figure out the secrets of the Void Madges. They find refuge in a neighboring kingdom, where more secrets and lies are uncovered, along with more questions. Astrea and Jin are getting closer, and he begins to open up about his time away from her. Astrea begins to train and learn more about her magic. This book has more romance, a bit of spice, and lots of surprises. I am absolutely in love with these characters. The journey has been amazing and cannot wait to see what happens next.

I love this series. I'm usually an enemies to lovers girl but this friends to lovers was done so well! I love the magic system, I bad guys are awesomely evil, and most of all I love a good MFC who gets a little overwhelmed and hates herself for it. But still decided to be a badass.

It dragged a smidge (can't be all action or that would be boring) and then next thing I know I'm reading in the dark at 1:40am knowing I'm going to be a zombie tomorrow morning getting the kids to school but it was just so good I didn't care, I HAD TO KNOW. Some books are worth the price of sleep and this one totally was.

On to Book 3!

I loved this book even more than the first one. It was a bit slow to start—like UDS—but there are so many juicy things to dig into: politics, romance, history, friendships, and the classic battle between good and evil.

I got to know and love the characters even more in this story, and I adore how Jin and Astrea's relationship progresses.

Ultimately, this book has high stakes, high angst, and lots of pain, but in the best way. I was just about in tears for the last quarter of the book, and I NEED to know how everything resolves! I can't wait for the next book!

You know that feeling, when you finish a book after a long while and you realise that its very good actually and you should‘ve read it sooner? Thats how I felt about this one, took me long to go to 60% but I devoured the remaining 40% which was more than 150 pages. And so much happened, I was excited, anxious and teared up while reading.
Thankfully the book doesn‘t end on a cliffhanger and the third book is up for grabs. Here you can find: friends to lovers, fighting against hidden evil forces, light vs dark, elemental powers and just a wee bit of spice.

Intense!

I really enjoyed this book. Jin and Az's relationship progressed, Az learned a lot more about her powers, and new characters were introduced. The end was intense!! What Az went through absolutely sucked! Her pain, her fear, her hopelessness....but then her utter determination! Perfect! I will say that the middle of the book has some pacing issues. I think it allowed for a lot of explanations, discovery, and character growth though. This book was also really well narrated by Brielle Rose... Once again!

High stakes, spice, and a perfect continuation of book 1, although I read Jin’s prequel story right before this one and had a much more whole understanding of Jin and his thought process and his history in the military. This book takes us on a journey with the main characters, and we get to see them grow and meet new friends, foes and family in a different kingdom. The last quarter of the book broke my heart, but the ending was great. I loved the blooming romance and I have some theories as to where certain things are going…so on to book 3!!!

Read this book!!! it's in Kindle unlimited and Audiobook on Audible.

The narrator lives in my head. This is such a close look at AZ and how she feels- her anxiety, inadequacy, her love.
sometimes it's refreshing how much she feels and sometimes, it's overwhelming.
The love scenes are extra special with her abilities to feel all the feelings. Her sensory overload is a real feeling. I really think they have the best relationship I've ever seen in a book. the plot follows much the same as 1st book but less action and more growth in this book. with some action near the end.

Mystery, adventures, love, and magic, how can you go wrong?

Book 2 of the Darkened Skies series, takes place right after the first book. Wow, I mean what are words, the emotional rollercoaster I couldn’t get off and didn’t want to. Again, I could not put this book down, I had to stop reading my other books because I was too involved with this book! I need to know what happened next, I needed answers! We got some answers, but I’m left with even more questions than I had at the beginning. I love it.

Spoilers?

Getting to learn more about Astrea’s powers and what she is capable of. Pushing herself to prove she can do anything, that she isn’t a burden to anyone or too weak to fight on her own. Her emotional journey through this and still coming out on the other side. She is one of my new favorite characters!

Highly recommend this book 5/5

I am loving this series still! The world has been built (though it is still growing!), and now we’re on to more action. The perfect balance of reminders of things from the prequel and book (just right for me and my bad memory while not being at all overly repetitive like I find some series). I also really appreciate that this book left me anticipating book #3, but still felt like it’s own full storyline with a satisfactory beginning, middle, and end.
