Frank ja Bert on tagasi! Esimeses raamatus mängisid nad peitust, seekord plaanivad pikka rattaretke. Muidugi saavad, sest sõprus on üle kõige.
Frank and Bert, best friends extraordinaire, are back. This time, Bert is struggling to ride his bicycle without going all wobbly, and Frank is doing his best to help his big friend perfect his technique. Needless to say, the going is quite tough, and also quite comic.
I used to read plenty of kiddie books but decided to take a small break as the content started feeling repetitive. However, when I saw this title on NetGalley, I jumped at it simply on looking at the cover. How I loved these two cuties in the first book ‘Frank and Bert’! I had read it almost exactly a year ago and still remember how much I had laughed at the ending. The duo doesn’t disappoint this time around.
The book delivers strong points on friendship, trust, self-confidence, and practice. None of these morals are rammed into the reader but come out through the humorous events on page. Then again, even if it didn’t have a single thought-worthy lesson, I would still have recommended it simply to enjoy the story for its own sake. It’s hilarious and yet relatable.
The illustrations are as cute as you can see on the cover. I simply love the detailing on each sketch, right down to the “fur” on Frank’s and Bert’s bodies. The drawings are simple yet eye-catching.
The language would be perfect for beginner readers as the words are easy for their age group. (3-6 years.)
Recommended with all my heart.
5 joyful stars.
My thanks to Nosy Crow and NetGalley for the DRC of “Frank and Bert: The One Where Bert Learns to Ride a Bike”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
If you wish to begin with the first book, here’s my review for ‘Frank and Bert’: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... Both books are a must for anyone with little kids around.
I love these books, I think I would buy them for myself if I didn’t have my nieces. The artwork is beautiful, the story although simple and funny tells children some very important lessons about friendships and helping people, being careful, a joy to read and reread again and again
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy in return for an honest opinion
I received this book from NetGalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review
I read this to my children and they loved the book. From an adult perspective it was also very well written and I couldn't get enough of it. I couldn't stop chuckling at certain points within the book.
I really loved how the book made a few points about looking out for friends and attempting to be cautious, but it did it in a very light-hearted manner and avoided being unduly didactic. The points are present, and they are amusingly concealed under a delightfully humorous wrapper.
FRANK AND BERT: THE ONE WHERE BERT LEARNS TO RIDE A BIKE is an engaging picture book about friendship and learning a new skill. The story is told from the perspective of Frank, who enjoys playing with his friend Bert. They like to ride bikes together, except for the problem where Bert does not quite know how to ride a bike. In the process, he sometimes makes a mess of things. Frank tries to help him, but he is not quite sure how.
When Bert asks him to stay behind him, Frank sees that he is starting to get the hang of it and moves - but then Bert slips up and gets upset. Frank makes it up to him by coming up with a new idea where Bert will just ride. However, the hill is much steeper than he thought and he is too tired to go back down it. Bert feels he is up to the challenge - as long as Frank is there riding on the seat behind him. Indeed, with his good friend there, Bert does it! At the end, Frank is one who has a small snafu when he keeps looking behind to check on Bert instead of looking ahead, much to the reader's delight.
What I loved: This is a sweet story about friendship and the challenge in learning something new. It does not come easily, but encouragement and support from good friends can go a long way. The story feels quite conversational, told entirely from Frank's perspective with his insights and thoughts along the way. This really pulls the reader in and makes for a fun read.
Illustrations are simple but capture the two friends and their emotions well. As a small thing, I appreciated that they always wear helmets while on the bikes. The images also tell part of the story with a recurring raccoon character (unnamed) who always seems to be involved in the bicycle-related snafus. Children who love exploring the images will appreciate the untold story throughout when they see that character.
The font is large and clear throughout, making it easy to read aloud. The pages can be lengthy in places, which may make this work better for older picture book readers. As a bonus, the book includes a QR code for an audiobook that allows children to read independently (including a sound for where to turn the page). This reading was also fantastic and adds to the experience.
Final verdict: FRANK AND BERT: THE ONE WHERE BERT LEARNS TO RIDE A BIKE is a delightful picture book about friendship and learning new skills that will charm older picture book readers.
Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
Frank and Bert’s friendship is everything! I first met these best friends when they were playing hide-and-seek. Bert wasn’t brilliant at it but he sure was enthusiastic.
In this new adventure, Frank and Bert trade in their scarves for bike helmets. Bert wants to be as good at bike riding as Frank but he “wibble-wobbles all over the place.”
This series is teamwork, perseverance and friendship goals. In this story, it becomes clear how important it is to have each other’s backs. A friend who is supportive and encouraging can give us the confidence we need to keep trying.
I absolutely love the illustrations in this series. All of the animals are very expressive, which adds to the humour of Bert’s oops moments. Bert’s wobbly tire tracks brought to mind the windy path his scarf’s loose thread weaved through the first book.
Some details are consistent in both books. Frank wears blue. Bert wears pink. The hills and trees are the same. This familiarity allowed me to focus more on what the characters were doing and feeling throughout this book.
Be on the lookout for the character who’s fishing. Handy hint: see if you notice anything relevant to the first time you see them when they show up later in the story.
I’ve read this book three times already and plan to buy a copy when it’s released. Naturally I had reread the first book and am delighted to report that I loved it just as much as I did when I first met Frank and Bert.
I need Frank and Bert to keep sharing their adventures with me. I adore these friends!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Nosy Crow for the opportunity to fall in love with this picture book.
Both a reassuring 'learning to ride' story and a lesson in friendship
Frank the fox tells us all about his friend's Bert's slight wobble with bikes. It's more than a slight wobble actually - he can't help but fall off or run into things, so it's a good thing they both wear helmets! Bert doesn't give up however but it's up to Frank to keep him motivated in the face of repeated setbacks.
Frank acts as parents as well as friend here, but in the end readers can see Bert making sure Frank isn't taking all the strain, that he sees progress, gains confidence, and can even help his friend in return.
Young ones will learn from this good lessons about bike riding not being something you can just excel out without practice, that you might fall off but you can get better if you try, and that your friends and family will support you as you keep at it.
Quite like the detailed fur on the animals, lines and curvy colours, with white backgrounds that don't take too much attention from the action. Not too wordy for a 3 year old, and a great reminder to return to for all those youngsters taking their first... pedals.
For ages 3-6.
With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample reading copy.
Publishing on the 12th January 2023 Frank and Bert take another turn in The One Where Bert Learns to Ride a Bike.
Just like the first book it's cute and quirky and a heart-warming delight. Again, like with the first book, we see pops of neon colour on an otherwise pastel palette telling the tale of this fabulous duo.
Frank and Bert are best of friends, dear friends. Yet Frank lets Bert down in a big way while he's learning to ride a bike. Frank works hard to figure out how to regain Bert's trust. However, the pair still find themselves in bike riding peril. Although, their friendship and trust in each other shines through to save the day.
We loved the cycle helmets that the pair wore. Our favourite spread is with the chicks wearing their little bobble hats while another animals has an unfortunate incident with his tail when Bert wibble-wobbles over it!
The moral is clear and one that is so important for our children to learn. Together, and with trust in each other, we can achieve our goals. I hope everyone gets to have a friend like Frank or Bert in their lifetime.
Sometimes friends just need a little encouragement and patience as shown in this picture book featuring Frank and Bert. They also might be able to rise the occasion when it's absolutely necessary. The two friends enjoy spending time together. While Frank has no trouble riding his bike, that's not the case for Bert. Instead, he wobbles all over the place, leaving a path of destruction in his wake and often crashing his bike. Frank tries everything to help his friend, standing right behind him and even turning his own bike into a two-seater. That works just fine, except that pedaling up a steep hill leaves Frank unable to ride back down. Bert somehow successfully gets them down and becomes a confident biker. But later on, Frank realizes that even he can get easily distracted and end up off the beaten path. With its positive message delivered in charming fashion and its two adorable animal protagonists, this one made me smile and look forward to more books about Frank and Bert.
Friends Frank (a fox) and Bert (a big brown bear) are back and ready for bike adventures. Frank aims to help his friend learn to ride better, but any time there’s an obstacle – think pond, a friend’s tail, a clutch of ducklings – Bert is unable to avoid them. Frank conceives of several different plans to help Bert, but ends up exhausted. Bert, it turns out, has been picking up the finer points, because he saves the friends at the end of a hard day, and the two friends are ready for lots more riding.
These two are a hoot. Kids will enjoy predicting when Bert will have an accident. Poor Raccoon has his tail ridden over and bandaged, and by the end we think he’s out of the woods, but then it’s Frank who makes a misstep involving Raccoon. Bert narrates the story with panache, and the cute artwork is appealing – Bert’s scribbled fur reflects his awkwardness. Kids who are learning to ride a big-kid bike may take solace in the friends’ adventures, as it all turns out just fine.
This book called Frank and Bert about Frank teaching his friend Bert learning how to ride a bike. Bert could not do it. I don’t know, maybe he didn’t know how to pedal on his bike? But Frank was always right behind him. It was an enjoyable book and I now want to carry on learning on how to ride a bike.
Told in first person, it is not clear initially which character is which. Bert wants to get better at riding a bike. When things go awry, Frank attempts to patch things up by installing a seat on his own bike. Fun and unique illustrations.
Frank is teaching Bert to ride a bike, and Bert has many mishaps. Frank is so tired trying to help him that Bert insists on getting them home. Cute and funny story and illustrations.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
The second Bert and Frank book and this time Bert (our bear) is trying to ride a bicycle, but will it go right? Or not?
I was absolutely delighted when I spotted this book over at Netgalley. I had just recently (in November/October) finished the first book in Dutch and I was eager to get even more from this duo.
In this book we have lots of bicycles, some sad animals whose tails are not happy, a pond dive, and more. Because Bert is trying to bicycle! Frank is pretty good at it… but Bert? Bert, I think he just needs a better bicycle. Or side-wheels. You know the ones that kids have when they cannot ride it safely yet? I was curious to see what solution our duo would go for and I can honestly tell you that I was very much surprised at what happened next. Haha. I hadn’t expected that, but it was a sweet solution (though I am not sure about Frank’s body and agreeing to the plan). It made me laugh, it made me snicker, and I loved Frank’s perseverance.
But yeah, of course this isn’t a solution! But I loved what followed. And I loved that it was more the case of x rather than y. Yes, keeping it vague. You will have to read the book.
The ending, just like in the first Frank and Bert, was one that came out of the left field and I had such a laugh. XD
The art was fab once more. I loved how the friends were drawn, but also animals and surroundings. So fun~
All in all, I hope that this duo will have many more adventures, because I need more! I would recommend it! Perfect for kids that are learning how to use a bicycle.
This very cute, funny storybook for children rewards close attention to the pictures, which get funnier the closer you look. It's a simple tale of Frank and Bert, two bike-riding friends in need of a little extra stability. Especially Bert, who is something of a disaster on wheels. Adults may find their antics chuckle-worthy as well. What I really liked was the book gets across a couple of points about helping friends out and trying to be careful, but the book keeps a pretty light touch and doesn't get overly moralistic about teaching lessons. The points are there, and they're amusingly embedded in a sweet, funny package.
