The Vet's Shelter Surprise was a great read featuring a romance between a veterinarian and a volunteer at the shelter she runs.

Georgia O’Neill's professional life is in shambles when she learns her beloved aunt has passed away. Needing time away from LA, Georgia heads to Sunset County to deal with her aunt's estate. After she discovers some kittens under the porch of her aunt's cottage, Georgia takes them to the Sunset County Animal Shelter. Veterinarian Mel Carter hasn't met anyone like Georgia before and after Georgia begins volunteering at the shelter, it doesn't take long for Mel to start falling for the woman. But with Georgia's life being back in LA, will rural Canada be enough for her?

Georgia works in public relations and just prior to the events of the book she has a very public meltdown involving a client which leads to Georgia's boss strongly suggesting she take some time off. Her trip to Canada to deal with her aunt's estate is the perfect escape and gives her time to evaluate her life. Mel works as a veterinarian and helps out at the shelter which her uncle founded which is about to lose its' funding. Neither Mel nor her uncle can see a way out of the funding shortage which is actually something Georgia helps them with. I liked Georgia's ideas and how creative she was to drum up funding.

The romance in this book gets off to a fairly slow start although they're both attracted to one another right away. Mel had a relationship that went bad several years before the book which has led to her being wary of relationships. Mel's wariness definitely slows their relationship down as she isn't willing to open up and let Georgia in. As the two work together to save the shelter they grow closer and their romance develops from there. I was at times frustrated with Mel being so closed off which did hinder my enjoyment of their romance a bit. The two do work through their issues by the end of the book and I was ultimately happy with their romance.

Overall The Vet's Shelter Surprise was an enjoyable book and I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a good contemporary romance.

A cottage country, small town romance with Mel and Georgia and a cast of various animals in a struggling animal shelter.
Douglas's storyline has touches of angst and teary moments and a sweet growing of emotion between the lead characters. One has shuttered her heart after a devastating loss coupled with deceit. The other has escaped to recover from a public meltdown and public relations fiasco - she's in the area to deal with her deceased Aunt's estate. The attraction is there, the connection the animal shelter but both women are cautious working through their emotions with a slight ripple in the plot before the HEA for all.
My first read of the author's work. This is a feel good romance with animals as the drawing card and shows the desperate need for animal shelters to help abused animals.

Georgia is still processing her grief over her aunt's death and her blowup at work. Mel has suffered her own heartbreak and is living a solitary life as the town vet. When they first meet you can sense the attraction. They each learn something about themselves as they grow closer. My heart ached for Mel and I did shed a few tears. Overall I love the story and the characters. You can go wrong with cute, cuddly bunnies and kittens.

4 stars. Harlequin’s first sapphic romance for their Special Edition line! The noise I let out when I got this arc was so ugly but I don’t care! This was one of my most anticipated books of the year. I love Harlequin books so now that we’re (finally) getting sapphic stories I love them even more. We had a sapphic romance released for the Medical line a few months ago and we’re getting one for the Desire line soon! What a time to be alive. My heart is full! 😭

As for this book itself now that I’ve gone off on a tangent I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will always love an emotionally constipated woman with a troubled past so Mel had me smitten from the start. I loved the way that she showed that she cared for Georgia. It was in her own little ways and it was so sweet. Georgia is someone who wears her heart on her sleeve and has a big personality where Mel is more stoic and closed off so they balanced each other out really well. I loved their chemistry and connection. The romance in this was so good. You have to expect third act break ups in a Harlequin romance so I didn’t mind it here plus it made sense given what happened. The ending was wonderful if not a little bit rushed but that’s okay. I still thought this was a great read. It was heartfelt with the right amount of angst and drama and a great cast of characters. I’ve already preordered a physical copy because I can definitely see myself rereading this.

Furry animals and a thawing recluse. A good story to warm your heartstrings.

I received an advance review copy for free from Booksirens and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Georgia’s career as a top Hollywood PR woman takes a big hit when she loses her cool in the red carpet and accidentally throws wine at a hot star. Of course the video of the event is everywhere and her company thinks it’s best for her to take some time to let things cool off. To make matters worse Georgia’s favorite aunt and friend just died and left her a cottage in a quaint little Canadian town. She has to settle her affairs and maybe a little time away in the middle of nowhere is just what she needs. Being used to working and doing not much else, what will she do with all the time on her hands.

Mel has sworn to never let anyone close ever again. It can only lead to immeasurable hurt. And that she’s had more than her fair share of. When her fiancée died in a car crash three years ago, that was devastating . But learning said fiancée had been having an affair with her best friend is what really broke her. As the town’s resident vet she gets enough love from all the animals she helps. Her uncle runs the local animal shelter and when he hurts his back, she steps in to help run the shelter. What she didn’t expect is a gorgeous woman to turn up with a momma cat and a bunch of newborn kittens. And when said woman starts working as a shelter volunteer it takes all of Mel’s willpower to keep her distance from this alluring Georgia.

I had a little trouble getting into the story in the beginning but after a few chapters it got me hooked. The two main characters have had very different experiences in life but somehow click instantly. No matter how hard Mel tries to stay away, she can’t help but being drawn in by Georgia. The two women are both realistic characters with flaws and act like actual human beings. Georgia works hard at chipping away at Mel’s walls and she does so convincingly. You can’t help but root for her success.

The animals serve as perfect side characters to the story. Who doesn’t swoon at a gorgeous woman cuddling a bunny? The way the two main characters interact with the animals shows you as a reader a lot about their character.

If you are expecting sizzling hot scenes, you might be disappointed though. There is serious chemistry but when push comes to shove you’ll have to use your imagination to fill in the blanks. I for one would have loved some more details of their physical connection.

All in all this is a good read to get yourself whisked away into a small town romance!

I started this book in hard copy en route to Staten Island and the marathon village, so I guess it's only fitting that I finish it tonight, almost exactly one month later. I hope whoever ended up with the copy I tossed in the orange village donation bin is enjoying it! Anyway, I read about six chapters then and liked it enough that I figured I'd keep reading it. I generally liked this. I thought Georgia and Mel were great, and I give this bonus points for finding a way for them to be together without Georgia having to give up her whole career. I could have done without

A small-town romance with furry animals? Yes, please. This is a low-angst, heartwarming read. The blurb captured me, and I looked forward to reading this. The story was good, but I feel like the attraction between Mel and Georgia happens quickly for I like(but that's just me.)
Overall, it was a fun read and I enjoyed it!

This is simply not a good book. Despite the fact that I love romances, even at their most formulaic, this book feels as unpleasantly familiar as an hour-long morning commute or a drawn-out weekly meeting. There is absolutely no chemistry between the two main characters. One could take any of their conversations out of context and they would sound like polite small talk between acquaintances. I was genuinely confused upon their first kiss, as I felt no connection had been made between the two of them. It was jarring!

Aside from the lack of chemistry, the writing is just not very good. A small but extremely irritating continuity error regarding a type of herbal tea made me want to call it a day and move on. I don't understand how it was missed by the editor.

Maybe I am just not in the target age-range, but this book felt distinctly Gen X to me. I couldn't believe these characters were meant to be in their thirties! Upon a search, I found that the word "sh*t", used once, was the only expletive to be found in the entire novel. I could read this book aloud to my grandma it's so restrained.

The plot felt confused. Instead of overarching themes, the author burdened us with a number of small, underdeveloped plots that had a tenuous connection to each other.  Backstories would be discussed briefly, then never again. I kept waiting for characters to meaningfully re-enter the story, but they would never return. As a result, not an ounce of tension could be built and I wasn't particularly invested in how anything would resolve.

Overall, not my cup of (chamomile or peppermint?) tea. I liked the premise and I love animals so I had high hopes, but it did not rise to my expectations. If you are looking for a cozy, small-town, vaguely fall-coded sapphic romance, I would recommend Not Just Gal Pals by Elizabeth Luly.

This was a sweet, cute, wlw veterinarian romance set in Northern Ontario. I loved the blossoming relationship between Mel and Georgia, and although I hate miscommunication as an issue in romances, the lack of communication in the book was realistic and made sense for the characters.

Confused at the start by the bit of story before the authors note. Not sure if it is,,,,,,,, well actually not sure about anything about it! 39% in, that scene appeared. I’m not sure if it was the equivalent of a coming soon but it threw me!

Which is a shame because when I decided to ignore that segment I got really quickly into the book. I liked seeing the relationship develope rather than just being told the mains were falling. Plenty of show rather than tell. I really enjoyed this and would have enjoyed a longer book.

“A Vet’s Shelter Surprise” by Elle Douglas is a delightfully cute novel that will leave you with a smile on your face and a warmth in your heart. Set against the backdrop of the Sunset County Animal Shelter, this story weaves together the lives of two remarkable women, Georgia O'Neill and Mel Carter.

The heart of this novel lies in the characters and their journey towards healing and love. Georgia, on a mission to rehabilitate her image while clearing her beloved aunt's cottage, never expected to find more than just LA glamour in rural Canada. Mel's quiet and idyllic life in Sunset County couldn't be more different from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood, but as they spend time together, they discover that love can bloom in the most unexpected places.

Elle Douglas beautifully captures the essence of small-town charm and the transformative power of love. The characters are well-developed, and their emotions are portrayed with depth and authenticity. The chemistry between Georgia and Mel is palpable, and their journey is filled with both tender and heartwrenching moments.

Overall, "A Vet’s Shelter Surprise" is a touching and heartwarming read that reminds us of the healing power of love and the unexpected places where it can be found. If you're in the mood for a feel-good romance that will leave you with a renewed sense of hope, this book is a perfect choice.

THE VET'S SHELTER SURPRISE is set in a small Canadian town and is filled with heartache, heartbreak, loss, family and friends, some romance, hard work and lots of animals needing a home. Many of the animals at the shelter are abused and it pulled at my heartstrings. This is a Sapphic romance published by Harlequin Special Edition and it didn't disappoint even though this is a genre I normally don't read but I always love a good book from many of the Harlequin lines.

This is Mel and Georgia's story and it was sweet as they try to fight their attraction since they are not looking for love or even a one-night stand. We watch their unlikely friendship after their disastrous first meeting at the shelter especially when Georgia becomes a volunteer extraordinaire as she takes a break from her job due to a social media post gone wild!

There are multiple storylines woven nicely together. There is a good flow as we get to know the characters and the various animals. There were vivid scenic descriptions that made me feel like I was there. There were also lots of warm, cuddly feelings toward the animals. There is closure especially with the epilogue and happiness on several fronts. Ms. Douglas is a new to me author and I will definitely give some of her other books a try.

Elle Douglas weaves a heartwarming tale of Georgia O'Neill and Mel Carter. Two women each with their own circumstances, each living different lives and how in life some things are just meant to be.

Georgia is a busy big city, under the spotlight type of girl. Knowing what she wants and focused on accomplishing her goals; she is suddenly faced with what happens when you become overwhelmed without knowing it. She is force to take time away from work and recently lost her aunt. So what better option than going to take care of things from her aunts passing.

Mel is a small town girl with a situation herself. A deeply personal one that will take everyone time to get over.

When these to meet your heart will warm more than you thought. I found I can relate to their situations. Although not the same we all have had situations that cause what these two experience.

Sit down, cuddle up and enjoy as Ms. Douglas weaves their story. They have a rich character and they grow together perfectly proving sometimes we can be successful until we discover what we want.

A 5 Kisses Review! Reading Georgia and Mel’s story shows that first impressions are not always correct, but feelings will always shine through and find the light when stubbornness happens. Given Mel’s history of heartbreak, it is understandable that she would have doubts about Georgia. The little orange kitten, with its mother and siblings, that makes Georgia meet Mel in the first place, has a special place in my heart, because he sounds like my own little kitten that I had as a child, one that came to me and wouldn’t let me go, like he did Georgia. It is a fond memory, so thank you for reminding me. Despite occasional resistance, Mel and Georgia’s strong chemistry is undeniable. They share a deep connection that is waiting to be explored, proving that sometimes the heart knows better than the head. We should always be willing to be ready to love, even though we lost in love because it is better to hurt than to wonder what might have been.

This book was pretty good, as in “the story isn’t ground breaking, but the writing, characters and setting are adorable and well done” kind of good. So, you know, a pretty awesome kind of good 😜.

I was kinda able to predict most of what was going to happen (yes, it follows the typical script that closely), but it did throw some curveballs that left me a bit “wait, wait, go back, where the hell did that come from?” Not because it came out of nowhere, but because I was expecting it to keep following the script and it was a bit jarring when it didn’t. They were pretty clever to be honest

(Which has nothing to do with the quality of the book, just a little comment in case it happens to other readers too. Just reread the page and you’ll see it doesn’t come out of nowhere.)

All in all, a good book worth reading.

I am a sucker for a small town romance especially if it involves extra layers like grieve and well cute animals.

TW for animal abuse and cheating

Georgia goes to a small town to settle the estate of her late aunt and also to heal her wounds after a horrible video of her has gone viral. Unsure about her job and future, she stays in her aunts house until it is sold. By a stroke of faith she finds herself visiting a shelter and in the spur of the moment she decides to become a volunteer there. The cute vet Mel is a nice side perk.

Mel has been hurt badly in the past so she does what any person would do, she throws herself into her job and stays clear from people. Easier said than done obviously when the cute Georgia comes to town.

This was a really cute romance and I enjoyed the development.

got this arc from netgalley, thanks!

this was cute, but it didn't really grab me. i really loved that neither georgia or mel had any sort of "but is she even attracted to women?" moments. they just went straight to being queer at each other. and there was no homophobia at all. that was great. loved it, 100%.

however, i did absolutely skim the last 10% because i could see the last minute breakup/makeup coming, and i just didn't care for it. i didn't think it was necessary, to shatter and then have to rapidly rebuild a relationship that had slowly been growing for the entire book. i did appreciate the ending! i think it's meaningful that Georgia didn't just give it all up but is thinking more about what she wants and who she wants to be.

i don't have any major issues with this book, it just didn't keep my attention very well.

anyways, there's my two cents. sweet, warm, and fuzzy until the last twenty pages or so. and then a sweet, warm, and fuzzy ending.

I loved this small town romance between Mel and Georgia. These two are as different as night and day, Georgia works in PR and is reeling from a nightmare situation that went viral causing her to head to Sunset County to sort through her recently deceased aunt’s cottage and to keep out of the spotlight until the repercussions of the incident die down. Mel works as a veterinarian volunteering at the Sunset County Animal Shelter and is a closed book after the devastating loss and betrayal of her fiancé. Mel and Georgia will break your heart and give you hope in this beautiful story of second chances, forgiveness, love wrapped up in gorgeous small town life with some super cute animals thrown into the mix. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I can’t wait for more. Thanks Elle for sharing your debut harlequin story with me.

This book was very middle of the road for me. It started strong; the writing style was fun and easy to digest and the animal names were adorable and amusing. I also found myself tearing up when Mel’s ex-fiancé was first mentioned and had high hopes that this would be an engaging story of two women overcoming their individual barriers to love.

However, as the book went on I didn’t find myself connecting to Georgia as much as I would have liked and just didn’t really get emotionally invested in the story. I also felt that the chemistry was lacking between the two leads and (for a Harlequin romance especially) the spice was almost nonexistent. There was a bit of a payoff at the end with Mel moving on from her past but it was pretty predictable at that point and it felt like the author (and I) was just ready for the book to end.

Overall a pleasant but forgettable read.

Ok story. Georgia O'Neill is taking a break from her high level PR position, after blowing up for her client in a video that's gone viral. So she's in Sunset County, Ontario (probably, since they mention Toronto is close by), and is working on cleaning up her late aunt's house for sale. With some time on her hands she volunteers at the local animal shelter. And there she meets local veterinarian, Melanie, Mel - Carter, who is very gun shy about a new romance, having been betrayed by her fiance and best friend, only finding out about the betrayal after her fiance dies in a car crash. But the attraction between Georgia and Mel is too strong, but both are heading in opposite directions. Or are they?

I love that Harlequin is including sapphic romances to their roster of books. Georgia O’Neill is in Sunset County, Canada to settle her aunts estate. She is also laying low from her prominent work in public relations after a work incident blows up virally. After finding some kittens and taking them to the local shelter she decides to fill some of her time by volunteering. At the shelter she meets Mel Carter a local veterinarian. Mel is private and a bit wounded from loss in her past. But Georgia’s friendly attitude and some simple PR skills are helpful for the shelter and are equally good at breaking down Mel’s defenses.

This is feel good storytelling. Cute kittens, care for abused animals, a horse back ride and a scenic lake for a back drop are all included. I read it all in one sitting. Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for the ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.

I really enjoyed this book. Mel was almost icy but her longing looks showed there was heat bubbling beneath the surface.

Georgia came to Canada to escape a snafu with her company and to empty out her deceased Aunt’s cottage. Getting a job at the animal shelter introduced us to a beautiful supporting cast of furries and snakes, plus there were a few humans in and amongst. The story was witty and engaging and I really immersed myself into the book. I wanted to keep reading and reading and was sad when I got to the last page.

The Vets shelter surprise is of course full of surprises especially for the main characters.

Each of main characters learn a lot about themselves as they struggle to maintain a small town animal shelter. In a charming way we get to know the shelter residents as the attraction between the two main characters grows. Each is dealing with their own demons but once they acknowledge their attraction a new pathway emerges.

A throughly charming story of pasts discarded and new horizons opened. I love how sweet all the characters- including the animals- are and love a happy ending

The perfect feelgood read!

This was just what I needed to cozy up with on an evening. It totally made me smile — the romance, the setting, the animals...all the feels. And seriously, Mel in aviators...hot AF! There's a lot to heal from in Mel and a lot to learn from in Georgia. I loved that the latter didn't give up on everything she'd always wanted in life and found a way to blend her old love with her new...softening her parents' demands over her in the process. A gorgeous debut and I can't wait to read more from this author and Sunset County!

This is a new author to me, but didn’t disappoint. A really lovely read about an exiled PA Georgia, who retreats to sort out her recently deceased aunts house in the country. There she finds a mother cat and her kittens and takes them to the nearest animal shelter. There she meets vet Mel and that starts them on a journey to find romance. Well written and a good flow, although it takes time to get going, stick with it because its a really lovely read.
