“‘Your face, Lord, do I seek.’ Hide not your face from me.”
Psalm 27:8-9
When we think about encounters with God, they might seem sudden, accidental, or at least out of our control. We’re just living life, and then suddenly, we’re struck by a moment of awe or changed by a Spirit-initiated epiphany. While encounters with God can certainly occur when we least expect them, we will more likely experience God in new and exciting ways if we deliberately seek out such an encounter. Like David, we can set our hearts on seeing His face.
Biblical encounters with God are often associated with mountaintop experiences. As such, they follow a Ascent, Encounter, Descent. These three aspects of encounter are represented in the three distinct sections of this devotional booklet. The first section, Ascent, will prepare your heart for the encounter experience with fifteen daily devotionals from the Psalms of Ascents (Psalms 120-134). Each devotional has open ended questions and space for journaling. The Encounter section will guide you into a personal retreat with God with "recipes" for encounter. Because this section is customizable, no two people will have the same encounter. The last section of fifteen devotionals, Descent, will transition you off the mountain and back into life with lasting change.
Encounter features 45 scripture-based devotionals that are designed to help you connect to God with depth and intimacy by challenging mind, body, soul and spirit.
This was a very creative way to deepen my daily devotionals - going up the mountain and then down the mountain, which framed a retreat. This was super helpful as I would say that the greatest ongoing benefit is reinstating the spiritual practice of consistent retreats in my devotional life ❤️ my one suggestion for an area of improvement is to add how we can Encounter God through Acts of Service…in that as we examine Matthew 25 (parable of the sheep and the goats) when we give someone a drink of water, “you did it for me” (v40). Great book, lots of work went into this, highly recommended 👍
The book of devotionals is designed as 15 days based on the Psalms of Ascents, "recipes" to spend time with God on an overnight retreat, and then 15 days of devotionals after "coming down from the mountain top." I really enjoyed working through the book. I feel like I gained so much perspective and grew in my walk with God thanks to the devotionals. I journaled a bunch but prayed even more. I'm keeping the book and would like to use it to focus my thoughts and heart on a retreat annually.
Everyone should read and have an encounter with God. It will be life changing. Will read again to stay focused and growing in my relationship with God.
