“I walked away from him… but I left my heart behind.”

At eighteen, Lux shatters Sebastian’s heart – and breaks her own in the process.

When their paths cross again unexpectedly in New York City, Lux does her best to feign indifference toward her first love. But the harder she tries to hold Sebastian at arm’s length, the more determined he becomes to uncover the secrets she’s been keeping about their past… and the true reason she broke his heart seven years earlier.

She’s as much in love with him as ever; he’s just as furious at her for leaving. But beneath the anger, forbidden attraction still simmers… and it’s only a matter of time before it boils over.

When the past is finally unearthed, the monsters Lux spent seven years running from will finally catch up to her. And nothing – not even her love for Sebastian – will be enough to save her…

**SAY THE WORD is a steamy, suspenseful standalone contemporary romance for fans of action and angst. Due to sexual situations, adult language, violence, and thematic elements, it is intended for readers ages 16 and up.**

I loved this book!!! It captured the intensity of a once-in-a-lifetime, heart pounding romance that was given a second chance and mixed it in with suspenseful drama and lighthearted fun. From the moment I started reading, I could not put it down!! This is definitely one of my favorites of the year!!

I knew I was off to a good start as soon as I read the dedication. Then the prologue gave me tingles and I was already hooked and desperate for more before I’d even started the first chapter.

But before anything else, I’ll tell you a bit about the story…

Lux and Sebastian (Bash) fell in love in high school. They were young, but it was forever love. The kind of love you don’t move on from. Even though they were in the same class, they were from such different worlds — he was the son of a US Senetor and she was dirt poor “white trash” (her words) but neither of them cared about that. The only thing that mattered was how strongly they felt for each other.

“For a brief span of time, I’d been complete. I’d been his, and he’d been mine, and nothing and everything made sense all at the same time.”

Then, right before college, Lux was forced to make the hardest decision of her life. She shattered the heart of the boy she loved and broke her own in the process when she unexpectedly left town.

“I’d known then, at eighteen, that my case of heartbreak was terminal, incurable. It wasn’t “puppy love” or “first love” or any of the loves that supposedly fade with time and large quantities of ice cream. Because when you walk away from your soul mate – when you take real, true love and throw it in the fire and watch as it burns down to ashes – you know you’ll never be the same.”

Seven years later, she’s working as a writer for a prestigious magazine when a twist of fate has her suddenly face to face with Sebastian, the guy she never once stopped loving but hasn’t seen since the day she left him. Naturally he’s hurt and angry and she’s holding on to secrets too but their intense connection is still there, strong as ever, and Sebastian will stop at nothing to find out what made her leave.

Woven in with this already-intense romance was a suspenseful side-plot centering around a case of missing girls Lux was investigating that was linked to deep political corruption. And the deeper she dug, the bigger the case got. I’m not going to lie, this section of the book gave me chills!!

I've also left out a certain part of the story in my description on purpose because it's not mentioned in the blurb but I think you'll enjoy the story more overall if you don't know everything going in.

I swear to you though, at only 3% in, I was already swearing my undying love for the book. This book put me through more emotions in the first two chapters than some whole books combined. I was highlighting quotes left, right, and center. Even just in those first few chapters, I already had butterflies, my heart was racing, I was excited, curious, heartbroken, laughing and just completely invested in the story!

I really loved the layout of the chapters — Then, Now, Then, Now…. — it was brilliantly balanced between the past and the present, giving us just enough to hook us into story then taking us either backwards or forwards in time to find the next piece of the puzzle that was Lux and Bash. It was so cool to see these pieces slowly come together to build this bigger picture and reveal the truth of what happened and uncover the secrets that had influenced their lives.

When I read that first break up scene though, my heart broke right along side theirs. I had so many questions… Why was this happening?? What made her do this?? It was still very early on in the story and I barely knew the characters, I was already feeling for them so strongly and I needed answers!!!!!

Ohhhhh and that moment when they first met again, my. heart. stopped. It was such an emotionally charged moment and so well written!! Their heart break and longing was conveyed so powerfully.

“We stared at one another, two strangers bound eternally by a shared past of lies and broken promises, and I wanted to throw myself back in his arms… I wanted to erase the past seven years and kiss him until he forgot how I’d destroyed us.”

Lux was such an awesome heroine! This girl was strong, sassy, and fun. She’d had to make the most heart breaking decision of her life and lived every day with the guilt and pain that was left behind but she still held her head high and tried to make the most of every situation she was put it. Totally a ‘glass half full’ type of person, even when her whole life was falling apart.

Bash was just pure swoon-material. I loved him SO much!!!! This guy was the kindest, most understanding, patient, and loving man you can imagine. He had a heart of gold so when I saw it get broken, I just wanted to cry. Check out this quote from him…

“You might think you’re the villain in my story, Lux, but what you don’t seem to realize is that I don’t care. Princess or Evil Queen, I want you standing by my side when this tale comes to an end.”

The writing was absolutely fantastic! I love this author’s style and I absolutely loved the way the whole story was built. It started strong and stayed strong throughout. The past and present was woven together seemlessly along with just the right balance of romance, heart ache, hilarity, suspense, drama, fun, and hotness. I really loved that even though this was by no means a comedy, there was just enough wittiness mixed in to keep me laughing every few pages.

Towards the end of the story, tears were pouring down my face (the good kind!!! I promise) as the emotions intensified and then my heart started racing as the suspenseful subplot reached it’s peak. I personally loved the way the subplot was woven in — it incorporated a bit of mystery, suspense, action into an already emotionally charged romance and it began building from quite early on so I felt it was very well balanced. I can see how someone who doesn’t like suspense at all might find it a little distracting from the romance but personally, it totally and completely worked for me. I will say that I might have wished for things to have been a little bit steamier but on the flip side, I felt Lux and Bash’s connection so strongly that I really didn’t feel like I was missing anything even though it would have been a welcome addition.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book! It had a little bit of everything — romance, drama, suspense, humor, strong emotions, great writing and a story that kept me glued to the page from beginning to end. Oh, and the ending was totally gorgeous and we were treated to a wonderful epilogue! I highly recommend it!!

I FREAKING LOVE JULIE JOHNSON!!!

“I think that if two people are meant to be together, nothing can ever truly separate them. Time, distance, other people — it doesn’t matter. They’ll circle back around to each other eventually.”

Lux broke her heart among with Sebastian's. She shattered her heart into thousands little pieces, and since then there was a constant hole in her chest. Until seven years later, when she met him again and he was not the sweet boy she fell in love with any more. He was cold, distant, lifeless and angry, so angry with her. She destroyed him. Lux wanted desperately to tell him the truth, the reason she threw away their future together but there were higher powers that prevented her. So, she suffered in silence. She had her amazing friends, Fae and Simon, to distract her, and her investigation on the disappearances of young immigrant girls. But her present and her past were tangled together in a terrible, smothering embrace, and Bash was always in the middle of it.

“Say the word and I’ll go. Say the word and I’ll fade away, and this, right here, will be the last time you see me.”

Lux's story is a heartbreaking one. I don't think I will ever find the proper words to praise Julie Johnson's hauntingly beautiful writing. Before Say the Word, even though I wanted, I couldn't believe in soulmates. I couldn't afford to, because if I did I would have to spend the rest of my life alone, looking for the epic and tragic love, the kind of love that devastates you. The kind that rips your insides open and leaves you gutted, out in the cold. But Bash's strong belief, no matter how naive it sounded at first, is imprinted in my soul. Soulmates are a reward, not a certainty. I think you have to earn them. And I believe, if you’re one of the bastards lucky enough to stumble across yours, that you have to fight for them with everything you have. I don't know if I will ever be lucky enough, but I do know that I loved with Lux and Bash and Jamie, that I had this gutwrenching experience, even though it was through someone else's eyes, and that alone makes me blessed.

“I shall either find a way, or make one.”

5 Just Say the Word Stars

Say the Word, a stand-alone new adult romance, hails as the second book published by the gifted wordsmith Julie Johnson. Both this and Like Gravity are two of my most favorite NA reads. Narrated strictly by the heroine, Lux Kincaid, Ms. Johnson treats the readers to an easy conversational tone of which leaves us completely enamored with her story. The beautifully descriptive writing draws us in as if we’re sitting down with an old friend over a glass of wine listening to a sordid tale of love, mystery, and heartache. If you want a love story with a lot of sex then this isn’t for you. If you’re up for a great love story filled with longing and the journey of lost love, then please read Say the Word. The plots of this book provide a solid foundation for a grand adventure of vividly real life issues, and an exploration of the evils lurking around every corner. These issues, handled with a delicate care and sensitivity, provide the catalyst for people like Lux and Bash to become heroes.

Toggling between Lux’s past and present; the author leaves the reader constantly dangling on the precipice of understanding the heroine’s choices. The format of this book urges you to keep reading - every chapter a guessing game – the ends leave more questions, more fascination, giving just enough puzzle pieces to decipher how the events of past and present relate. Brilliant choice formatting the book this way, leaving little room for worry about the future. Its exciting reading of Lux and Bash’s past. To reconcile where they are now to where they came from – the story wouldn’t be as extraordinary without this superb writing choice.

The test of a true heroine lies in the reasoning and strength behind the choices and/or sacrifices she makes. Lux Kincaid wasn’t dealt a royal flush in the game of life. But the game she played with the cards given to her is nothing short of remarkable. Selflessly acting on instinct she guides us on a journey I never expected. She’s a woman of grace, humility, and class. She’s also hilariously neurotic, down to earth, and real. I could totally see myself sitting down with Lux for hours just to laugh enveloped by the comfort of her aura.

Sebastian Covington – just his name gives you a sense of propriety that makes you want to belong in his space. Merging Bash’s past and present, reconciling the differences between boy and man is half the fun of his character. He’s endearing, charming, gentle, and determined. Bash has an authority about him, a sense of pride that you are drawn to immediately. The royal flush Bash was dealt isn’t the most favorable hand either.

The colorful cast of secondary characters conquers the story. Parts of the charm of this book are Lux’s two hilariously loyal best friends, Simon and Fae. Their banter and easy relationship with Lux hold true to the best of friendships. The other charm - Lux’s brother Jamie - whom holds a very special place in my heart. The plot line involving him and Lux had me reaching for the tissues repeatedly. Even the villains of this story are perfect in all their evil glory.

Imagine the last time you visited a haunted house and the scary fun you had inside. Say the Word takes that fun and makes it come alive on paper. This saga about a head strong girl from the wrong side of the tracks falls for the charismatic boy who seemingly has the world at his fingertips, two soul mates destined by the fate of falling in love, Bash and Lux will capture your hearts. Say the Word fills your heart with great characters, hilarious dialogue, and intriguing adventure wrapped in real life issues. Do not skip over Julie Johnson’s books as she possesses a truly unique gift of storytelling you don’t want to miss.

Favorite Quote:

“If you walk outside before a heavy rainfall or at the start of a particularly strong lightning storm, there’s a feeling in the air – a crackling of intensity, like standing by a live wire letting off sparks. There’s a smell – the sharp, pungent scent of ozone, as a current fills the air. The atmosphere is electrified, humming with energy and, at any moment, ready to unleash a monstrous storm on the earth below. Being near Sebastian felt that way – and I was standing in the center of a treeless field holding a metal rod up to the sky with both hands. It was only a matter of time before lightning struck me.”

Say the Word was a little too "Wordy"

I think I would have enjoyed the story much more with less dialogue. I also felt a disconnect between the two parts of the story line so it somewhat felt I was reading two different books. One a NA second chance romance, the other a Nancy Drew special.

Lux Kincaid was in love at one time with Sebastian Covington. Due to not so great circumstances, she breaks up with him. (It's pretty easy to figure out early on what happened)

She has pined over him the past few years and has had unsuccessful relationships. She currently works for the magazine, Luster as a writer. One day while at work she comes across him and she is heartbroken. He is now an important photographer and dating models. He is hot and cold with her but its just because he's still hurt from all those years ago.

But then we have this sideline story coming along with this cute little girl from the market that Lux has befriended going missing. Lux is determined to use her investigative skills to find Vera no matter the cost.

But then she gets caught in the web of everything. Bash wants to keep her safe but when they find out who is involved, things get a little more tricky. How will she get it out of this mess and save Vera?

GONNA FIND YOU photo im-gonna-find-you_o_249086_zps376fa886.gif

I will say I did like the side characters of gay BFF Simon and secretive Fae.

 photo tumblr_lq47j4MhPw1qztwte_zpse2281dc7.gif

All is all the story was supposed to come together in the end but it didn't really do that for me. It still felt like two different stories. This one is a read at your own risk!

I'm not sure why this missed the mark for me ! I loved the authors debut novel and there were definite 5 star moments in this book but .... It fell short for me. I enjoyed it but didn't love it as I wanted. Usually books like this ~ second chance at love , that have letters and the *sadness* I would shout my love for at the rooftops !

3.5 Broken Stars

But what did you do when you lost your soulmate, and there was no chance of ever having him again? Did you move on, even with the knowledge that nothing would ever be quite as good? Did you try to fill the empty holes inside yourself with misshapen parts that someone else could offer?

Lux Kincaid is young, beautiful and broken. She was forced to break the love of her life's heart seven years ago and she's never fully recovered. Sabastian Carrington, or Bash as Lux nicknamed him, is the hottest photographer in New York City and angry as hell at Lux for cruelly and callously ripping his heart out. For seven long years he's thought about what he'd do if their paths ever crossed again. Wouldn't you know it, fate's a tricky bitch and these two end up working together on a project for the magazine Lux writes for.

The story's told in the present day and via flashbacks that give us a glimpse at Lux and Sebastian's past relationship. While the back and forth perspective annoyed me after a while because I felt it hurt the flow of the story, it helped to show the softer, sweeter side of Bash. Let me tell you, he was ANGRY at Lux for 60% of the story and it made it hard to see how these two would ever find their way back to each other.

As much as I liked this book, there were some things that just didn't work for me. There's A LOT going on here. Lux and Sebastian present day, Lux and Sebastian's past, Lux's funny as hell dying brother Jamie, Sebastian's evil parents. Oh and a little sex trafficking storyline that took up a good portion of the book. Are you exhausted yet? Because I sure was by the time I got done reading this.

I enjoyed Julie Johnson's writing, hence the 4 star rating rather than a 3 star, but I ended up skimming through parts of it. There were times I thought the descriptions ran LONG and I felt myself growing bored. Luckily she gave Lux two highly entertaining best friends in the form of Fae and Simon and they did an excellent job of lightening up what otherwise could've been a very heavy book. I'm actually rooting for Fae to get her very own book.

Though I liked but didn't love this one, I'd encourage anyone that wants a book that brings on some major feels or likes the idea of two people meant to be together and finally getting it right to give it a shot.

It wasn't bad, but I wish the author had taken a different route. I thought it was going to be a story about second chance love and with some suspenseful elements. However, that wasn't the case. There was a story where she meets the love of her life after 7 years, the-second-chance-romance, and then there was a separate story where she investigates where young immigrant girls disappear, her Veronica-Mars activities. And with the flashbacks from the past it simply appeared that there was too much happening in this one book. Later, I wasn't even concerned about her 'investigation', I just kept skimming to the parts where she meets Sebastian. Those parts seemed far between and really small with not enough dialogues between the two. Also, her internal dialogs seemed really long and very descriptive, thus I felt bored for the most part.

I think it could have been a good book if it included Sebastian's and Lux's story only, the present and the past, I believe that the subplot - suspenseful mystery - wasn't necessary.

“Soulmates are a reward, not a certainty. I think you have to earn them. And I believe, if you’re one of the bastards lucky enough to stumble across yours, that you have to fight for them with everything you have.”

4.5 stars, with lots of feels!

I love this book! A deeply intense and emotional story of true love the first and second time around, told with humour and lots of heart and intertwined with a mystery/suspense storyline featuring the disappearance of young girls. And the writing is absolutely sensational!

It’s kind of funny how a decision you make when you’re eighteen can change your life forever. And by funny I mostly mean absolutely fucking terrible.

At age 18, Lux and Sebastian (Bash) are deeply in love. Even though they are from different sides of the tracks (him the son of a US senator, and she from a white trash family with neglectful, alcoholic parents), they share the soul-deep, forever kind of love that totally consumes them both. But their worlds are both shattered when Lux, forced into a heartbreaking decision, unexpectedly ends things with Sebastian and leaves town, leaving them both destroyed.

When you walk away from your soul mate – when you take real, true love and throw it in the fire and watch as it burns down to ashes – you know you’ll never be the same again. The heart isn’t like the liver; it doesn’t regenerate, no matter how much time passes. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.
I’d left mine with Sebastian when I walked away that day, and I hadn’t seen it in the seven years since.

Seven years later, and Lux is a journalist and working in New York City. She has created a good life for herself and seems content with where she is at. Although she has never forgotten the boy who still holds her heart. And then, without warning, her past, and all of the emotion tied up with it, comes racing back into her present when Sebastian unexpectedly re-enters her life. And oh holy God, their reconnection is intense!

We stared at one other, two strangers bound eternally by a shared past of lies and broken promises, and I wanted to throw myself into his arms. I wanted to bawl like a baby and take it all back – all the distance and the hurt, the deception and shattered trust. I wanted to erase the past seven years and kiss him until he forgot how I’d destroyed us.

Sebastian is now all grown up! Highly successful in his own right, he is more gorgeous than ever, and He. Is. Angry!!! Still shattered over the events from the past, he too, has never recovered from losing the love of his life and it is obvious that he is consumed with rage and all kinds of hurt. When the two of them are forced together, the chemistry between them is electric, and the result is heart-pounding, highly emotive and intense interactions which left me both shocked, fanning myself at the sexual tension, or bouncing up and down and grinning with anticipation about all that is to come.

“I wouldn’t run too far, Freckles,” Bash added, his voice a blend of frustration and determination. “Because we’re not finished. Not by a fucking long shot.”

With the story of their past unfolding in alternate chapters with their reconnection as adults, their full story is slowly revealed, and we get to see all of the little moments that made their relationship so special. The teasing, fun and banter is fantastic, but as we finally learn all that Lux has been through and uncover the big (not so) secret that led to their heartbreaking separation, once again the emotion is huge, and my heart shattered right alongside theirs.

“People say love isn’t supposed to be painful. But maybe the best things in life are the ones that hurt the most after they’re gone.”

I love Lux! She endures so much, but she is so positive, looking for the happy moments, with a fabulously sassy attitude and a fantastic wit. Her capacity for love is enormous, and I really admire her spirit.

And then there is Sebastian *dreamy sigh* I fell in love with Bash twice in this book – once as a confident, funny and sweet 17 year old, and again as a highly successful but closed off 25 year old, still desperately searching for answers and struggling to cope with the heartbreak that he suffered 7 years ago. His absolute conviction that Lux is the girl for him, and his determination to get to the bottom of the big secret, and then claim her back, is sensational!

“You might think you’re the villain in my story, Lux, but what you don’t seem to realize is that I don’t care. Princess or Evil Queen, I want you standing by my side when the tale comes to an end.”

It’s not all intense emotion though. There are lots of light, fun moments as Lux and Bash recapture their spark, and start to open up to each other once again.

“I’m not going out with you.”
“Come on, it can just be a friends thing. If we choose to get naked afterward, so be it.”

“I don’t care how you label yourself — friend, girlfriend, strange blonde girl who follows me around…”
He laughed when I smacked him on the arm.
“It doesn’t matter. What matters is that I’m crazy about you,”

And it all unfolds in the middle of Lux investigating a series of disappearances. Young girls are being taken from their families, and when it personally affects somebody in her life, Lux goes out to find out what happened, and who is behind the disturbing disappearances. I thought that this was a really interesting addition to the story and even though it was all a bit consequential, it tied in nicely with the flow of the story and gave us some good dynamics. Although I do think the book would have been just as strong without it.

A quick shout out to the absolutely fantastic cast of side characters. Can I just take a moment to squee about Jamie? SQUEEEEE!! He is absolutely fantastic! He brings SO much to the story, and I thought every little interaction with him was just gold! . And then there are Lux’s best friends, Fae and Simon – absolutely hilarious, I loved them both, and laughed pretty much every time they made an appearance. And it looks like Fae may have her own book coming with a very interesting set up for her, and lots of secrets to uncover!

I loved this book and raced through it, unable to put it down. I was enthralled from start to finish and Julie Johnson’s beautiful writing made me feel everything – from absolute heartbreak to blissful happiness, and everything in between.

Highly recommended! 4.5 stars.

This one had a very strong prologue and the first chapter itself really gutted me. I hardly know the characters yet, but the break up scene was just too much to take in. It make me rooting for them to reconcile again seven years later.

Told entirely in the form of 'now' and 'then', we got some glimpses into their lives seven years ago, how they met in Latin class, the friendship with Lux's twin brother, Jamie and the reason behind the break up. Lux is the poor girl that came from the trailer park, while Sebastian is the senator's kid. They were obviously from an opposite life, yet their love was so pure and strong.

People say love isn't supposed to be painful. But maybe the best things in life are the ones that hurt the most after they're gone."

Going into this book, I thought it was a second chance romance with the suspense in regards to the reason behind Lux's leaving Sebastian. However, this is not quite the case. The reason behind it was too predictable. It was in fact the first reason that came to my mind.

Now, Lux is working for a women's magazine, while Sebastian is a renowned photographer and their path crossed again. There was a lot of hatred going on with Sebastian and obviously he never forget the girl who betrayed him all those years ago.

I find that there are too many unnecessary long description of things that's not pertaining to the plot. For example, Lux's interaction with Mrs. Patel and the design of her boss' office that went on for few pages. I don't mind having some extra information in regards to her life, but it is just too long. I find myself skimming those part and only focus on Sebastian's name when he pops up.

When the story veered towards the missing immigrant girl and Lux turning into an amateur sleuth, I felt that the story loses it focus. Is this a romance or a suspense or a romantic suspense? I like a plot that surprises me, but this one just felt a little off.

I think the reason I wanted to finish this book is because I felt invested in Lux and Sebastian when they were a teenager and wanted to see them getting their HEA. Overall, I still like the romance part of the story even though the way they get back together feel a bit anti climatic , the rest of it, not so much.

"You might think you're the villain in my story, Lux, but what you don't seem to realize is that I don't care. Princess or Evil Queen, I want you standing by my side when the tale comes to an end."

THE REVIEW

Why this book?
It seemed like a book for me

What I thought

This book was amazing! It's full of emotion, love and second chances. It was captivating and the writing is riveting. The characters are relatable and the romance has you feeling all kinds of emotions. There are two storylines going on within this book that came together perfectly. As for the characters Lux was a strong heroine, her sacrifice was heart breaking and Sebastian was swoonworthy, even if he pissed me off at times. This book grabs you and doesn't let go until the very end. Even though this book is 460 pages I didn't notice the hours passing by. I really need to check out more of Julie Johnsons work. Overall a wonderful read.

BOOK BLURB:

"The heart isn’t like the liver. It doesn’t regenerate, no matter how much time passes. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. I’d left mine with Sebastian when I walked away that day, and I hadn’t seen it in the seven years since." — Lux Kincaid

At eighteen, Lux is forced to make a choice. One that nearly destroys her.

She breaks a boy’s heart.

She breaks her own, too.

Seven years later, Lux never expects to see Sebastian again — especially not when her career as a journalist is hanging by a thread and she’s stumbled onto the story of a lifetime. As she chases down leads and explores the dark underbelly of Manhattan, Lux will put her life on the line. But after crossing paths with a still-unforgiving Sebastian, it’s her heart she’s most worried about.

Amidst the blame and the betrayal, the hurt and the heartbreak… can two lost lovers ever find their way back to one another?

Lines will be blurred. The past will be unearthed. And Lux will find out that some secrets aren’t meant to be kept…

REVIEW:

From the lovely cover to the very last word -- a superb reading adventure! The book blurb above says enough . . . so I won’t be spoiling this marvelous story by adding any more details concerning the storyline.

I will say that this book is well-worthy of any romance reader’s time. There’s a stunning combination of bittersweet and second chance for happily-ever-after within its pages. A secondary plot is well blended and runs alongside the main one in the last half of the book – one, the building and ongoing romantic relationship filled with its ups and downs between Lux and Sebastian (Bash), and the other a suspense surrounding the disappearance of a child Lux meets in the open marketplace. I was hooked by the addition of the dark and chilling mystery which was intriguing and cleverly interwoven into the main storyline.

A strong and delightful cast of side characters -- portrayed as Lux’s BFFs, Simon, a clothes designer extraordinaire, and Fae, who is close-mouthed and ever-knowlegeable -- add plenty of spark and wit to the narrative as well.

And it would be wrongfully unfair not to pay a special tribute to Jamie, Lux’s twin brother. What an admirable and strong individual, who played a very important role in the relationship building between Lux and Bash, while fighting the battle of his life.

This is an outstanding addition to the New Adult genre by a very talented new-to-me-author, Julie Johnson. I’m also grabbing her debut romantic suspense novel, “Like Gravity” to read while anxiously looking forward to what comes next from her.

It took me two weeks to finish this book. *sigh* There are too many plot lines with no central idea to hold them together. The novel starts with a great potential in the second chance romance, but quickly degenerates into excessive inner dialogues and unrealistic storyline.

I laughed, I cried, I smiled and I went through the ringer of emotions. I so so so felt for Sebastian when Lux did what she did and you can really understand why he was so cold to her after seeing her 7 years later. What I felt so sad about was Jamie.

Jamie was Lux's brother who was struggling with cancer. He was vivacious and full of life to the end and was always there for Lux. Not telling Sebastian about him when they were friends really was Low Lux. But when the reason behind the tearing up of Sebastian's heart and spitting it out comes out you understand and even feel sad for the time they lost.

Lux works for Luster and one day is sent to a shoot. Here Sebastian is seen again only he is cold to her. Sebastian isn't a bad guy just she crushed him and she is his soul mate. Sebastian is scared and hopeful that she loves him still but again scared because he doesn't want to be crushed again so he hides behind this cold exterior. To get back a Lux or so he thinks it is punishment, he goes to Luster and has Lux transferred to him while he is doing their cover shoots. Meanwhile Lux and her two hysterical friends Simon and Fae are learning about each other and having a fun time. Those three are hysterical when together. Simon is just too much and when you put him with Fae your side will have stitches from laughing so much.

Sebastian is wanting lux and finally just decides to stop hating and now he wants to figure out the truth. Lux tries to keep him at a distance but he knows better and is dogged in his pursuit. It's so cute to see and read about. While this goes on Lux puts herself in danger over a story that is personal and needs Sebastian's help.

As we see flashbacks of Lux's past so we can understand her more and stories of Jamie who will be the light for you and have you smile, Lux gets closer to the truth of her story and needs Sebastian. This puts them both in danger but Sebastian doesn't care because he loves her and will protect her at all costs..little does he know how close to his family this story is in destroying their love again.

This does have a HEA that will put a smile to your face as you see Lux face down the bad guys with Sebastian there as well and these two come together at last. A wonderful read about true love and how it can come out sweeter and more beautiful even in tragedy and heartbreak.

My new year has not started very well, or so it seems. Well not personally of course but bookwise. I'm leaving this book unfinished at around 50% not because I don't want to read it, simply because I don't have enough courage to go on....

I won't say reasons because that would be really too spoliery, but I didn't sign up for so emotional read so I'm just gonna stop. It's such a shame because even though bit cheesy, I thought the writing was pretty neat...Still not my cup...

Read it and you'll forget the word 'regret' !!

Everytime I read—even just a portion of— this book, I come to live in their world. I get to see them, meet them, know them, feel for them. Behind the anguish and danger... where it grinded my heart to dusts which were blown away by the cold breeze and made it whole anew... I've met love.

It made me utterly confused on whether I would like to read as fast as I could till I finish the story because it leaps my excitement so high OR better yet, to slow down because I don't want it to end. I tell you, it mostly made me laugh joyfully at first then shed tears of pain and sorrow the next.

"This is real. We're real."

Sebastian or simply Bash. He's a photographer. I have a thing with photography so I loved him instantly. He's gentle, understanding, and incredibly sweet. I can say, he's my dream guy. You'll be surprised that he's fond of Jane Austen! Romantic, yeah. A lovable man.

Lux. Bash calls her 'Freckles' and if I were in her shoes, I'll find it annoyingly cute! She's a journalist and I dreamt of being one before. What I love about her is that she has a way of coping with life's misfortunes, being strong and determined despite the fact that she's totally falling apart. She carried more burdens than you can imagine a person could. But she accepted how bad things were and just go on living. She's transparent though she wanted things hidden.

Their togetherness was lovingly remarkable! They defined their love in a Latin phrase 'aut viam inveniam aut faciam' which means 'I will either find a way or make one' .. They made me believe in fate and soulmates. That no matter happens, if someone is meant to be with another person, destiny will push and pull them back together. Ohh, and it's not just about romance alone. You'll learn the true meaning of home, having your own chosen family. Si and Fae were matchless besties! They're crazy at most times, but I appreciate that they're always two steps behind Lux, ready for defense or for attack or for whatever support she needed. It's great to have friends who know you too well that they can identify the very little weirdness in your acts to tell that something's wrong.

James Arthur— I prefer Jamie. I fantasized of having him as my twin, y'know. But of course, I love my real twin sistah (just can't help to tease her that I'd rather trade her to have Jamie! Ha!!). He's the sweetest! Calling Lux 'the light of my life'; always breaking the ice, joking around. He has a natural talent of drawing a smile on people's faces. And, Jamie's box?? AWE! That's genius!! I mean, it really has become his sense of immortality. That he never left Lux alone. I love his letters! Big time. All that he'd written calmed the waves of the raging storms and always gave hope. Selfless. One word you can call him. Especially that part when he told Lux that she'll live her own life, that she can. He made me a crybaby, and inspired me in life.

There were moments that had me exhilirated, made me shout 'AWW' (either left me broken or happy by the turn of events). When Bash mishandled Lux in extreme anger and so much hatred then called her a whore. When Bash checked Lux's bed for any sign of sexual activity with other guy like he's jealous. When Bash called Lux's pretense, knowing she's still affected by his nearness (that part where he kissed her near the earlobe and collarbone. Ow, c'mon! I, too, shivered!!). When Bash tried not to really freak out as he promised then kept composed and just locked Lux with a tight embrace. When Bash had come to read Jamie's letter labeled 'FOR HIM' (it's filled with words of honesty and love, as I said, I so love Jamie, too!). When Bash told Lux "...You're my family." walking away from his father, implying she's all that he need. Well, Bash has been the center of my everything here. Stating the obvious. :)

It's been a battle to make a review because I want to include everything, really. Each word in every page has been a part of me. Reading it is my FLASHBULB MEMORY. I'm truly, madly, deeply in love with this book!!! You MUST read it...

‘Say The Word’ is the second book by Julie Johnson that captivated me right from the start.

Like Gravity was the first book that I’ve read by Ms Johnson and it was one of my fav. Books of 2013.So I was a little bit apprehensive while starting this book but there was no point of it because I loved this book.

The writing was perfect. The way the book was written in Then and Now chapters was refreshing for me and can’t say I didn’t love it. Both the Now and Then chapters mixed together piques your curiosity and base the plot so well that you can’t help but live the story along with the characters.

The story was about Sebastian and Lux. High school sweethearts, friends, sweet pure love, I guess there’s nothing not to love about them.

"I love you." He said simply, his eyes fierce. "I’ve loved you since the first moment I clapped eyes on you in Latin class."

Sebastian and Jamie both were my favorite chacaters in the book but I don’t think I can be impartial to Lux and her friends, infact I love all the characters of this book except the bad guys ofcourse.
I loved Bash, even after what happened between him and Lux, he was still a sweet guy under all that hard exterior visible to others. I most specifically love that even after all those years they could read each other so clearly.

"You asked me to let you go – like it’s this simple, easy thing. But I can’t let you go."

"You might think you’re the villain in my story, Lux, but what you don’t seem to realize is that I don’t care. Princess or Evil Queen, I want you standing by my side when the tale comes to an end."

Jamie was Lux’s twin..he reminded me of Bailey(Making Faces) sometimes. So full of life, brave, he cared for Lux and the moments between them made me want to love him more.
This book made me laugh as well as made me cry, it was one of those books in which I knew everything’s gonna be alright but still it does nothing to simmer down my curiosity, I read it in one single sitting.
I just wish I get to read Sebastian’s POV too, I keep waiting for a single chapter hell one single page would have been enough to read the emotions playing through his mind.
The book was totally worth the read, I would recommend this book to everyone.

Fav. Quote - "I should’ve fought for you. Instead, I spent a long time blocking out every emotion I felt for you. And when I finally stopped being hurt and confused and headstrong, when I started to let feeling back in… six years had passed and I was alone, on the other side of the world, without the only person I’d ever wanted standing by my side."

Holy wow. I got an ARC copy of Say the Word and my lord am I happy I got a chance to read this book! Not only did I master it in a day but I now have a whole bunch of new additions to my "Quotes (mostly from books) That I Want Tattooed" list.

I don't even know where to start. I wish I had the patience to find all the gifs that would help me express my love and enthusiasm for this book, but I dont. Because I just want to write this review and go read it again!

After the love affair that I had with Like Gravity I was nervous and excited to jump into STW. And (as is now becoming the usual) I was suckered right into the world of Lux and Bash and spent my day reading furiously trying to find out what would happen next! I loved the interaction Lux had with her brother, her best friends, and best of all Bash. I found it all super sweet, funny, sexy in all the right spots, and all around relatable.

I was a little skeptical of the whole "explores the dark underbelly of Manhattan" aspect of the story line (given the mainly romantic story line) but I thought that (despite a few slightly outlandish moments) Julie managed to make a work - which is rare for me to say, after growing up addicted to Nora Roberts romantic suspense books.

With Say the Word Julie has cemented herself a spot on my favorite authors list (quite the feat, considering I read 3-4 books a week) after only two books. I can't wait to see what she has next. As I said with Like Gravity - I usually prefer stand-alone novels but these are characters that I definitely would not mind seeing more of (Fae and Conor sequel please!)

This was such a great book! I was a little worried when I first started this book, mainly because I don't know when books go from past to present all the time, but for this book, it just worked! Let me start with Bastian. When you start the story, you know the two main characters are not together. Reading that scene, BROKE MY HEART! Seriously, I didn't even know him as a character yet and my heart broke in two for him. But they were both young. Once everything is explained you totally understand everything that happened and why it had to happen. Bastian was such a fantastic guy. Even though he lost the love of his life, that experience didn't change the great man he became. He was still as wonderful as before. It is refreshing to read about males that are just genuinely good guys. Now, Lux. She was a fantastic heroine! She was so sweet and heart working. No matter what life dealt her, she tracked forward and did what she had to do. She never felt sorry for herself or her family. Her relationship with her brother, Jamie especially, made me tear up quite a few times. She was just all around awesome and BAD ASS!! The romance to me isn't even the biggest part in this story. There is suspense and drama to do with what she is researching as well, but I don't want to get into that and give any of the plot away. Anyway, I highly recommend this series. Much like this author's first book (which was also great!) this book have very little angst in my opinion. But, also like her first book, I WANT MORE!!! lol I am also SO interested in Fae's story with that sexy sexy Conor! Any books in the future for this couple?!?!?

"..You have to cherish the insignificant moments you have with your most significant people. To hold onto the times when you're happy. To smile often, and laugh loudly. To enjoy the ones you love, and hold them close to your heart while you still have them."

Holy shit! I'm rendered speechless. Shit. Nothing I expected AT ALL. Julie Johnson is capable of making my heart sing and cry and beating rapidly. I felt it within me. Not my first time reading her work but damn, I was thrown off the loop.
Reading a book without any expectations and having felt the emotions you go through nearly feels like an outer body experience and that's how I earnestly felt reading Say the Word.

"Facing the world with a smile becomes the ultimate act of resilience."

This book is structured in two parts, then and now and I couldn't have appreciated it more. Yes it's only written from the heroine's POV but I was so glad for it. Having both the past and present made everything more understandable and worthwhile.
Lux Kincaid is seriously one of a kind. Yes she had past issues but it wasn't something it's inevitable to not to be able to relate to. Her heart is pure as it gets, despite her trials and tribulations. I admired her and hats off to Julie for making her character a believable one and inspiring too. Lux's strength, LOVE, understanding, caring, vulnerability, selflessness, bravery, feisty-ness, sacrifices - just everything about her was rapturous. Gosh, the way she sought after Vera, Mira and Roza, oh damn. That's just Lux for you. I loved Julie even more when Mrs. Patel was introduced - that woman was just something else but I loved her just the same. Not forgetting Fae and Simon - they were a breath of fresh air.

Now Jamie, oh my God. I cried and even still am (cos reviewing this, I'm reliving it) because my hearts breaking that much. What he went through was so unfair. It made me realize how in reality people live through cancer. Jamie's a force to be reckoned with!

"Don't dwell in the darkness, sis. Live in the light"

"..You give love deeply and freely without expecting a damn thing in return"

Sebastian Covington AKA Bash was an intense of a man. Even though you didn't get to read his side of things, you were still able to understand everything. I loved how you were able to see his understanding when things went down the hill. But he was great for Lux. I did dislike him in a few scenes but I couldn't make myself hate him. & yes, he was sexy. damn. His parents were just bastards. Seriously though, him and Lux were two lost souls finding each other.

"Blood isn't always thicker than water, Bash"

"Love and hate - they're two sides of the same coin"

This took me nearly a week to be able to vocalize in my head and express it but to be honest? How can you form words for something so indescribable?! To understand what I've felt within reading this book a week ago and still feeling it, then pick up the novel and read to your hearts content!!

"Don't get so caught up in chasing your dreams that you forget to live them."

Say The Word is Julie Johnson's sophomore release.  I was pretty hard on Ms. Johnson's first book Like Gravity.  I gave it 4 stars but they were definitely hard earned.  This book though, wow, easily 4 stars.  I am so impressed that this is only her second book and she's so young.  I can only imagine what other amazing stories she will have for us in the coming years.  I can't wait.

This story has a little bit of everything, second chance love, death, heartache, intrigue, suspense, and forgiveness.   One thing I really like about Julie's writing is her ability to make you feel like you're in the room with the characters.  The pages come to life with beautifully colorful descriptions and equally colorful characters.  You quickly find yourself anticipating scenes with secondary or even tertiary characters.  Each unique and important to the story.

Mrs. Patel, who had to be approaching approximately three or four hundred years old if the myriad of wrinkles lining her face were any true indication of age.  With a shock of thick silver hair she kept pulled back tightly from her temples with a shiny tortoise-shell clip, a wiry frail frame that belied the spirit in her dark eyes, and cheeks wrinkled like an apple long past it's harvest, she was now a mere shadow of the lovely woman she'd undoubtedly been in her youth.

Lux Kincaid is a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, with alcoholic parents and a sick twin brother.  Sebastian Covington the son of a Senator, who is totally in love with Lux yet obliged to follow in his fathers footsteps.  These two are torn apart not by choice, well not really, more like by circumstance.  The story goes back and forth giving us the story of Lux and Sebastian when they were 18 as well as the present 7 years later.

The two are thrown back into each others lives and it definitely complicates things for both of them.  I really appreciated that the author didn't allow them to fall right back into love.  In fact they barely tolerate each other.  Yes there's massive sexual tension but the story between them is believable and not contrived.  Maybe even a tad revengeful and at times hateful which made it all the more real for me.

There is also another story happening, this isn't just a second chance love story.  There's a mystery surrounding the disappearance of immigrant girls in NYC and Lux finds herself following bread crumbs.  This part of the story is intriguing and I often found myself in nervous anticipation of what would happen next.  I didn't think it was at all predictable or contrived.  Lux is a journalist so her chasing these bread crumbs weren't necessarily far fetched.

Many times I found myself smiling at the dialogue between all the characters, including Lux's friends and co-workers Simon and Fae.  But there are also some very heartfelt, poignant moments that brought tears to my eyes.  I really felt like Say The Word was a well rounded story, with lovely characters and a believable plot.  I very much look forward to Julies Johnson's future work.

What a wonderful discovery this piece of story. Even though the story line was not something that i have not come across before but the way the author executed those tender emotions of falling in love, heart break, sorrow, loss, hope, love and happiness was just splendid. I love Lux Kincaid's character here, she is loyal and brave and such a beautiful and giving heart even at the expense of her own happiness. It takes a lot of courage to break one's own heart for someone else's benefit. I love her relationship with her twin brother who was dying with cancer and her innocent yet so real love for one golden boy who has stolen her heart at 17.
Sebastian "Bash" Covington was equally wonderful on his own, despite being born to a world of wealth and privilege his heart was not cynical and selfish and found a kindred soul in Lux when they met in high school. When Lux was forced to break his heart brutally I mourned their young love. When I learned later on what really went down that made Lux do the things she did back then I was mad as hell for the two people responsible for their heart break and separation. But even with the years and miles apart they still didn't win coz fate has finally step back again to claim that love back.
I also love the mystery and suspense aspect of the story when Lux who finished with a degree in journalism stumbled upon something that she feels that she need to pursue and write up a investigative story to help find her friend and others who are a victim of such horrific crime. But it prove to be dangerous and may cost her her life and the faces of the monster behind such crime ring will hit close to home. Man my heart was beating fast when Lux find herself embroiled in the heart of the human trafficking ring but she managed to make use of some her moves and that made her badass in my book. And Bash after getting over his initial anger after seeing Lux after all these years, he was beginning to realize that there was more to what Lux was saying to him and that everything was not it seems at that time when she broke up with him. He was so sweet and protective of Lux when he also discovered that she was going on a dangerous mission of her own to find and save her missing friend. I cried, a laugh, i giggled and ached through their story. I especially cried when Lux finally read her twin brother's letter for the man she loves. Sappy but true. Just say the word, Freckles!

10 shooting stars!

**Say The Word Review**

It took me a day to finally write a review for this book. I just can't do anything after reading it. I was so overwhelmed. Words were overflowing and so were my emotions, and yet I couldn't do anything or didn't even know where to start. I got lost. Caught up. Stilled. Immobilized. Because all I did is felt. Absorb. I let it consumed me because by gods, I love how it made me feel.

I don't just read books. I passed the phase of tagging it as just a mere hobby in my slum book. It's my passion. It's something I could no longer picture out not doing anymore. I live for it.

I really don't have any major requirements in reading a book. Offer me any book and I'll read it. But it doesn't mean I don't have a 'priority' list. 'Course I do. Those were the kind of stories that will surely make me momentarily put the one I'm currently reading "on hold" (figuratively speaking) and rush my ass to start them.

It was just a good thing though, and thanks to my lucky stars, when a dear friend of mine recommended this book to me, I've just finished reading a book on my long 'priority list'. Because of the gods, I so love the plot. And this book never disappoints. I love it!

It has everything you wanted in a novel. Romance. Suspense. Action. Mystery. Humor. But what really bagged me is how the story was beautifully told. I mean, anybody can write a story, but not everybody knows HoW to TELL a story. Julia Johnson really knows how to tell hers!

I love second chances, young love, broken promises, and redemptions. I love the lines. Geezus, Julia Johnson is soooo good with words, she made me cry. I love this novel with so much passion and total abandon I can hardly breathe!

There's so much heartache, but with a promise of healing in the end :)

Wow...this book blew me away with the writing. You know that moment you come across a line or quote and your breathing stops, your world tilts, your heart literally hovers over the page and the words seem to pulse off the page as you struggle to catch your breath? Yeah...this happened throughout the book. I loved it. She has a way of painting a pretty picture with her words but it's never just a picture it's also a different perspective. It's honest and the pages become a canvas of emotion that will leave you so beautifully rattled. The very first page had me hooked and feeling so many emotions I didn't know what way was up and it never stopped. The characters, I loved them all. Every. One. The relationship between Lux and her brother was so endearing and real, you can see the truth in the writing. Her two best friends are such fun characters and the banter was hilarious. Sebastian (swoon) I swear he had my heart from the very first page and still hasn't given it back(Sorry Lux). It's got a little bit of everything and so much more. When I finished I felt like my heart had been stitched back together and every word tattooed into it. It's not just a love story it's a true love story and how two people "find their way or make one" when all the odds are stacked against them with regrets etched into every brick. But every brick has it's purpose and every choice leads to a destination, sometimes it just takes longer to get there. Read it I promise you won't be disappointed, it's top fave of mine this year for sure =)

SAY THE WORD by JULIE JOHNSON

IDK how she managed it but this story is so much more and so unexpected. Reading the blurb, you will get the idea that this story is a second chance love story but let me tell you this is not your typical second chance, second beginning love story. It is so much more. Julie Johnson blew me away. This story she created is surprising because she managed to write a second chance romance and incorporated one of the most cruel & inhuman issues of the world which is human trafficking. How she did it, IDK but she blew me away. Really. I love that she gave her readers something different that it made me (at least on my part) think of the reality and what other poor girls, women are experiencing at this very second. I like the reality-feel of this story. I like that it's more than just the second chance romance. This book made me giddy, made me laugh, cry and cringe at the same time. So yeah, the story is definitely good given I felt those emotions in one story.

This is my first Julie Johnson book and I immediately added her other book in my TBR list because I am that impressed.

Give this a try. I'm sure you will love it.

when i started reading this story, i had no idea that it would end where it did. it started out as a relatively heavy, yet lighthearted read, and along the way, it took a turn on the boulevard of mind-fuckery. with that being said, it felt like a work of complete fiction to me - but isn't that the reason we read? to get out of our own heads and delve into the mind and world of someone else? that justification made sense for me.

for probably the first third/half of the book, i really didn't like sebastion, despite the flashbacks of their past. but then he redeemed himself. lux was a pretty likable protagonist - with a hero complex(or i guess in her case, a "heroine" complex) some might say it was out of a sense of civic responsibility she did what she did, but i can't completely wrap my head around that.

and daaaamn, am i on a roll reading about death this weekend, or what? not gonna say anymore there.

overall, a pretty enjoyable read. it felt longer than her other book, Like Gravity, but that just could be because i read this on "breaks" - funny how the "breaks" lasted longer than the actual study-sessions.
