Would you know what to do if SHTF? How prepared would you be if the lights went out and the supply chain screeched to a halt tomorrow? The odds of something like this happening may have seemed far-fetched 20 years ago, but in light of current events, the possibilities are stacking up. Societal collapse, a major earthquake, a winter storm taking out the power grid, a volcanic eruption, WWIII, nuclear winter, a pandemic with a lethality rate higher than .5%...? It’s near impossible to be prepared enough- and most likely none of us would fare as well as we’d hope. This book takes you along on a journey with a group of friends as they learn to navigate a harrowing post-apocalyptic landscape. Four couples must band together for survival when a mysterious event threatens to destroy America’s power grid while simultaneously challenging its waning morality. Learn from their failures and successes as they travel, on foot, from Arizona to East Texas in an attempt to outpace societal collapse and the rapid rise of the depravity of man.

Not the best

The story was excellent. Liked the characters in thee book. Much too wordy though. I would lose interest though trying to get through an entire chapter describing a character just reaching for his gun.

I always intend to finish a book, but I just couldn't with this. I started out trying to like Colt and his friends and their gaming banter was fine, similar to what I have experienced. The start of the disaster with an unexpected EMP had promise too, but the characters failed to live up to the potential. These were never, ever serious people. The gaming banter and joking never stopped. After they reach Colt's home and he explains the serious nature of the EMP, his wife decides that it the time to wake one of their sleeping friends with an elbow to the back. Throughout a far-too-lengthy review of Colt's gun safe and discussion of what to take, the main concern of some of the group was how they would look cute...super cute. We did not need an extensive demonstration as to how gorillas wipe their butts. Colt is supposedly a quasi-prepper and does amass a lot of guns and ammo and some food, he also gets seeds but muses that he has no idea what to do with them. Dude! Why buy them and not ensure that they are heirloom seeds and print out something to let you know when and how to plant them? For that matter, why buy a high-tech gun locker, worry about an EMP, but not have a manual way to open it. These guys go looking for supplies and end up shooting people with not a lot of thought...and then joke. The new year is too new to continue with this.

This story is good….

….well, okay. The younger and more likely you are to play FPS games (an acronym I learned in the book itself) the more you will love this story. The main characters are a group of friends who join together to travel from Arizona to East Texas following and EMP. They appear to be in their late 20s and are all married — that is four friends and their spouses. The main character is the guy with most of the guns — guns are quite important to this group.

As I said, they are purportedly on their way to Texas, and I think with all the bad guys and all the requisite gun battles they might have gone five miles. No, really, I’m being sarcastic. They did go some distance…But never mentioned that they even crossed the border. That means there is likely a sequel.

They really are a fun group of friends and it was a mostly readable story (I don’t play FPS games….)
Respectively,

Entertaining if a bit more unrealistic than much of the genre

EMP Bugout is the 1st book in the series and follows the story of a group of 4 couples coming together to survive in a post-EMP world. The writing is good, the characters are likeable and have some depth to them, the plot and pacing are good, and there are even a couple of laughs out cloud moments, highly uncommon in apocalyptic survival thrillers. My main criticism is that the likelihood of a large group of like minded survivors kitted out with high end firearms, IED's, and nearly unlimited ammo at the start of an apocalyptic scenario are, outside of organized militias, essentially zero. Its not that everything goes to plan, its that way too many things do go well for them. Still, its a fun and worthwhile read for anyone who enjoys apocalyptic survival thrillers. Overall, not bad. 4/5 stars!

A Learning Curve

I enjoyed reading this book. It truly shows how much people need to learn about an EMP and what they need to do to survive. The only thing I did not understand is why the people in this story continued to joke around and play tricks on each other. Are they children or adults? Hopefully they will grow out of this situation and get serious. Look forward to reading more.

One of the better ones of the genre I have read since starting my venture into this corner of the post-apocalypse world. Seriously scary scenes were often interspersed with references to the main characters former gaming experiences that I actually enjoyed even though I have never played one of these first person shooting games in my life. Hope more follow.

Reading this page-turner is like watching an action movie, with some introductory morality and theodicy conversations thrown in for free! If we do suffer an EMP attack, I want "Colt" and his friends with me. Looking forward to the sequel!

Group Adventure

This book is a hilarious journey through lights out. It shows all the serious steps to take for survival, and sprinkles them with a dose of good humor. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Somebody had to do it. I'm glad this guy did.

Action Packed Survival

The action is nonstop. Excellent plot that develops the main characters. The author certainly played to those of us who are gun enthusiasts. The gun safety tips were great. The sophomoric humor was a bit much, but did lighten the mood as comic relief.

A Great Read

I don't typically leave reviews but this book had me laughing out loud which is not typical for this genre. While it started a little slow it quickly turned into a great read with a lot of good information.

Way too many butt jokes, A la 10-year old boys

Silly book not having much to do with surviving the apocalypse. Mostly Borscht belt jokes. A few strange out of place rants, including one tedious argument for the existence of God. Really?
