Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.

After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.

Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.

“I love you and I’ll love you forever,” Col whispered.

“I love you too,” Theo whispered back.

“You made me wait a long while for that.”

“Two minutes. Were you beginning to wonder?”

I am not ashamed to admit that even before I read the blurb for He's The One, I was very much attracted to the cover model. So, yes, there are times when I still judge a book by it's cover - or it's handsome model - you pick. 😍 This was my first time reading something by Barbara Elsborg, so it took me awhile to get accustomed to her style of writing. But, once I got into the swing of it - I liked it - I actually liked it. She has such a unique way of bringing out the humor - well, maybe it was Theo who did most of that 😉, but it was the sincerity and honesty in his actions - in the believable way that her two main characters gravitated to one another with conversations that were truly heart-felt, that could earn a chuckle out of me even - made me think that this was the start of something special.

“How long have I been asleep? You should have woken me.”

“No, sleep’s what you needed and you looked so peaceful. When I got bored of staring at you, I had this to read.”

“How long did it take you to get bored of staring at me?”

Theo showed him the book and grinned. He was on the first page. “And it’s supposed to be a brilliant thriller. Ready for lunch?”

Theo and Col may have met under the most cliche of moments, but their pasts are anything but. They are two individuals who do not want to be judged or known for their pasts or for who they are. Both of them have suffered - it is not pretty - they've both endured their share of tragedy that has made Maybe it was that kindred connection that drew them instantly towards each other. 🌸 It never felt like an insta-lust - even though, they openly admitted to their attraction right from the start. It was that mutual understanding that they felt for each other and wanted to know more about the other before becoming something else for each other. And that is why I kept reading - why their story stood out for me - aside from my slight attraction for the model, of course. 🥹

I adored Theo - he's the definition of an earnest sweetheart - a precious cinnamon roll - an absolute delight. It took me awhile to get used to his inner thoughts, but how eager he was with his desire to be someone wanted by Col - how much he cared about wanting to help Col. Even though, he's 21 years old, he's trying so so hard to measure up to his parents - how even though he feels so inferior in their eyes, he still wants to live up to his title. 🥲

He never felt confident enough to speak his mind - but, being with Col gave him the courage to try and be something more. He was a bundle of innocence and vulnerability, but with such love to offer, so much kindness in him, that made him irresistible - the temptation for him was so very strong for Col. And I loved his lack of control over his words - his no-filter talks were such a treat, that left me with such a smile on my face, because he just wanted to be acknowledged - to be loved for who he was - and Col saw that in him. 🫶🏻

“Long after we’ve ceased to exist, at the point that the sun explodes, the stardust that was once inside us, will return to life in the form of a new nebula. We’ll be together then.”

Theo stared at him without blinking. “We’re made of stardust and new stars will be made from our remains?”

Col nodded.

“How will my bits of stardust find your bits?”

“Because we’re meant to be together. We’ll always find each other.”

If there was anyone who deserved a hug more, it was Col. ❤️‍🩹 He's 25 years old, but life has not been easy for him, and yet, he's persevered. He's so strong, so brave - his willingness just to do the right thing for his family - to do something worthy of his stone-masonry talents. He's laden with a very painful past - but to see how gently Theo reminds him of all the good that he has still to offer.

Theo shows him that he is perfect the way he is, that he is someone that he wants to be with - that he makes him feel alive more than he has ever been, that he, in turn, wants to give the world and all the happiness in the stars to Theo - I loved it. With all their investigative work into Asquith's work ethics, through their quirky and still endearing banter, you can feel their affection for each other steadily growing, that made my love for them grow along with them. 🥰🥰

“You love me?” Theo whispered into Col’s mouth.

“How can anyone not love you?”

🫠🫠🫠

The way they fell in love - it was so very natural. There was such a levity of love in their conversations - Theo's candid words just made my heart melt and Col's, as well. I can't even say that Col was smitten with him, but after everything he's endured, he finally had someone that cared about him - without even ever asking something from him in return. I loved that their hot and steamy scenes were still laced with such a tender and affectionate hilarity that sparked with Theo's innocent candor. 🥹🥹

I think what surprised me more was that this was not just a simple tale of romance. There is a lot of pain - a lot of trauma to both of their pasts that haunts both of them. 😢 But, the fact that they felt so comfortable sharing those intimate parts of themselves with each other - it was definition enough of how special their relationship was. How meaningful they had become to each other - and it just felt so right - never forced or unrealistic. The efforts they take to help and comfort each other - to find a way to not let the past define them, but make it something they can move beyond - made me love them even more, together.

The side stories for the other characters were --- painful - the world is a cruel place; the lengths people go to protect one another, to make decisions that they feel are for the best - it's hard to move on from there. But, the author did such a wonderful job of bringing closure to all of those stories, that still felt sincere and very plausible. It depicted that it's truly up to us and with the help of others to make our own fate, no matter the circumstances.

My heart - my heart ached for Dominic - nothing more to say. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 I'm not ready for his POV, but I know his book will be heart-wrenching and heart-breaking. I am very much looking forward to it, and seeing more of Theo and Clo in the future.

A truly worthwhile read - it made me smile, it made my heart hurt, but at the end, it made me feel their love, and that's the best take-away I could ever hope to have. 🤍🤍

Barbara Elsborg has a way of telling story’s and creating characters that always pull me in right from the first page. This book was no different. I loved Theo and Col and how they were part of the other’s healing process. How both helped the other to believe in a future and in their own worth again. They were perfect for each other.

Theo doesn’t come from a home where love was available. On the contrary. His parents don’t hide their disappointment in him. There’s a lot of grief, anger and disappointment in that house and Theo is an easy victim. He doesn’t believe he’s worth much, and on top of it, his mother wants him to marry a girl and have kids while she knows he’s gay. She thinks he should keep his pleasures secretly on the side while being married. It’s one of the things Theo tries to stand his ground and not give in. Specially after meeting Col. He wants a future with him, even when it might seem impossible.

Col has a very difficult and traumatic past. He has the loveliest parents one could wish for, even though they are not biologically related. But his ex has turned into a creepy stalker, and he also has a brother he needs to take care of. When he meets Theo at a job on a castle, he’s not aware of Theo being the son of the marquee, and he falls quite quickly for the captivating, handsome and funny guy who can’t stop talking.

Them falling in love was such a natural thing happening, it’s as if they were truly meant to be. I loved the interesting side characters and the setting in the country side. This book is yet another proof that Barbara Elsborg is one of the best mm romance writers. I loved spending time with Theo and Col and I can’t wait for the second book in this series!

I was kindly given an arc by the author and this is my honest, unbiased review

Let’s just say I am starting 2024 in a bit of a slump. I always struggle with this author, so I knew this might be the wrong choice for me. I know it’s just me because most of my other friends in the Buddy Read really enjoyed it.

I'm just not connecting at all with either character. There is so much ugly happening to both of them and it just feels too grim; too heavy.

I tried.

Though the story captivated me and was hard to put down, I was also low key bored at times. I liked both Theo and Col but… 🫣🫤 Theo has a distinctly Jonty feel, a distinctly Barbara Elsborg feel, a kind of non stop humor which helps to lighten heavy themes, and some of the themes in this one are HEAVY, but isn’t really my jam. IRL, I find these personality types overwhelming. They drain my social battery SO fast. It’s easier to read this kind of character than actually interact with them, but even reading, it eventually grows old (and a bit irritating) for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Still, Elsborg manages to balance heavy and light in her unique and talented way and what could have been, and kind of is, an oppressive story, is cute and sweet at the same time. If you’re a fan of Elsborg’s writing and stories, this one should be a hit for you.

As for me, I’m a bit burned out by Signature Elsborg BUT I’m very curious for Dominic’s story and undoubtedly will be back for it when it comes out.

Beautifully Written Romance x

My heart ached for both Col and Theo. I thought that Ms Elsburg wrote both guys' stories perfectly and sympathetically, offering glimpses into what they endured. They were perfect for each other, they helped each other to heal, and to come to terms with what had happened in their pasts.

Theo was so incredibly sweet and caring, misunderstood and totally pushed to one side by those who should've loved and nurtured him. I loved how Col treated Theo, with respect and kindness, loving him without judgement. Theo helped Col come to terms with his troubled thoughts regarding what had happened to his family during childhood.

Be aware that there are dark themes in this story, historic child abuse is alluded to, despite this , I thought this was just a beautiful story of hope, belonging, growth and acceptance. So well written and emotional, it's almost as if the author can get into the minds of Col and Theo. My favourite book to date by Ms Elsburg.

The author does give a warning at the end of the blurb, about the nature of the story.

This was a slog for me. Extremely unrealistic (cringe) dialogue, two main characters that have been through some HORRIBLE shit, and it is dragging. I was sure it was a thousand pages but nope. I’m clearly in the minority so ignore me.

I loved everything about this book, but I loved Theo most of all.

Except Col's birth parents. They're already dead when this book takes place but I would have liked to get my hands on them.

Read this, you must!!

I've given this a C+ at AAR, 3.5 stars

He’s the One, a low-angst, cross-class romance, is the first book in a new series from Barbara Elsborg. I enjoyed it, although the the pacing lags in places and there’s an odd disconnect between the fluffy, light-hearted and very sweet romance and the traumatic backgrounds of the two leads. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Elsborg, though, so perhaps that’s her usual MO.

Col and Theo meet when Col saves Theo from being crushed by a piece of falling masonry. Col is a stonemason, but is temporarily part of the construction/restoration team working at Asquith Hall, seat of the Marquess of Farnstall, and Theo is - as Col thinks – one of the estate workers. There’s a definite spark of interest on both sides, but before either of them can say much, a man Col assumes must be Theo’s boss appears and starts berating Theo, who quickly heads off to man the entry gate as he’s told. Cute, skinny guys with floppy hair aren’t Col’s usual type, but given the way his last relationship went (with Col discovering his live-in boyfriend was married with kids) maybe he needs to find a different type. He has a few weeks of work left at the hall, and looks forward to meeting Theo again.

Except, as it turns out, he doesn’t get that chance. Col is called to the site manager’s office later that day and told his services are no longer required. He’s stunned – the crew is barely big enough at it is – but there’s nothing he can do, and he goes home at the end of the day feeling dejected. Not that his life’s ambition is to work on a restoration crew – what he really loves is stone carving – but it was a job and an income, and was enabling him to save a bit of money so that he will be able to support his older brother Dominic when he’s released from prison. Fortunately for Col, he has the most wonderfully supportive (adoptive) parents who aren’t going to let him wallow in self-pity; his mum insists he take part in the promises charity auction being held at Asquith in a few weeks… and maybe while he’s there, Col might be able to find that cute guy again and pick up where they left off.

Theo is, in fact, the son of the marquess and the heir to the title and estate (owing to the disappearance of his elder brother some years earlier.) He’s twenty-one, yet his parents and grandmother treat him like an idiot child. He knows he’s not clever or charming or smooth – he knows he doesn’t fit in and knows he’s a disappointment and he tries hard to please – but nothing he says or does is ever good enough. His father has insisted that he shadow Darnley, the estate manager (whom Theo has nicknamed ‘Dick Dastardly’ because he looks like the cartoon character) and learn how to run the estate from him, but doesn’t realise – or care – that his own dismissive attitude towards his son has given Darnley tacit permission to bully Theo and treat him like crap.

He’s the One is a long book by romance standards, coming in at just under 400 pages, and there’s quite a lot going on in the story, although oddly enough, it can feel under- rather than over-stuffed, because the pacing slows too much in places. There’s a sub-plot in which Col and Theo try to find out who is embezzling funds from the estate; there’s Col’s ex, who not only wants him back, but whose wife verbally abuses Col and physically assaults him (and has a hand in his dismissal); there’s Theo’s father’s miserable marriage (I worked out what was going on there fairly quickly) and the way he’s so dismissive of Theo’s ideas; there’s Theo’s horrible mother and grandmother, for whom he can do nothing right and who expect him to get married and produce offspring even though they know he’s gay; there’s the fact that Col grew up in care, and that his brother is in prison for the torture and murder of their parents (who were sexually abusing him and about to start on Col – not a spoiler, it’s revealed early on) and that he’s having trouble with other inmates, so Col fears for his safety… it’s a LOT. Dare I say, too much? I like angsty romances, I like there to be some degree of conflict, but it needs to feel believable and organic, and that just isn’t the case here. As soon as I read about Col’s past, I expected this book to be dark and angsty, but it isn’t; somehow, Col and Theo are both sweethearts who have managed to retain their kindness and ability to be happy despite serious trauma (Col) and a family who constantly dismisses and belittles him (Theo). On the one hand, that they’ve reached their twenties and are pretty well-adjusted is great – the author makes it clear that Col has “worked through his feelings and accepted he couldn’t change what had happened, that some things could never be put right” – and I was pleased that he had made a conscious decision not to let his past define his future. On the other, it doesn’t make for particularly gripping fiction, or a relationship that’s easy to invest in, because the conflict is all external and the characters seem almost incidental.

I did like them both, though, and they really are cute together. I enjoyed watching Theo gaining confidence as a result of Col’s support and his conviction that Theo is capable and deserving of so much more than he thinks he is. On the downside, Theo’s constant stream of babbling does get a bit tiring; he has pretty much no verbal filter (or mental one – his thoughts are equally chaotic) and while they’re quite funny and endearing at first, by the final chapters, they’re exhausting. I liked him and felt angry on his behalf at the situation he was in; it’s fairly clear that he has some kind of learning disability, but also that he’s bright and enthusiastic and very, very far from stupid, despite his family’s opinion to the contrary.

Speaking of his family, I had a real problem with the way things pan out, because Theo’s father – who has been every bit as dismissive of Theo’s ideas and abilities as his wife and mother-in-law, has never stood up for him, and has allowed his estate manager to treat him like shit – suddenly becomes a caring and supportive parent so fast I’m worried about whiplash; and while Theo’s mother and grandmother really are horrible people, it feels like they get all the blame for the way Theo was treated and his father gets none. Theo’s mother is a total cow, no doubt about it, and I’m glad she gets her comeuppance, but his father hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory, either, and yet he gets away with his poor behaviour.

He’s the One didn’t quite work for me, although I did enjoy certain aspects of it. The romance is sweet and I liked the leads (despite Theo’s verbal diarrhoea) – but so much of the extraneous drama is over-the-top and I have too many reservations to be able to recommend the book to any but – perhaps – the author’s existing fanbase.

This book absolutely captured me and wouldn’t loosen its hold until the very end. Col and Theo are superbly written characters who have suffered in their lives and have the scars to prove it.

The journey Theo travels from merely existing to finding himself had my emotions going from one extreme to another. Anger towards his despicable parents then morphing into laughter as he babbled and rambled and came out with the most hilarious things. Col’s upheavals from childhood are heart breaking, his ex boyfriend is the worst but Col still manages to maintain a superior level of integrity and kindness towards others. The first meeting between these wonderful main characters has them both seeking each other out for more. The chemistry bubbles along increasing with each flirty interaction until stolen kisses lead to more and a HEA that still has me smiling.

Barbara Elsborg certainly knows how to weave a complex storyline that keeps you turning the pages and fully engaged from start to finish. The well developed main characters and interesting side characters, perfect pacing and plot formation are balanced to perfection and I can’t wait for the next in the series.

Another hit from B. Elsborg! Col and Theo are like Disney characters with birds and flowers fluttering around them while they are surrounded by these miserable and horrible people. That dichotomy works! Strikes the balance between the good that literally pours from Theo's pores and the terrible people trying to make his and Col's life suffer. Just love the occupations portrayed in this author's books. A stonemason! Very unique. Loved how the first son/spare son issue continues into modern times. Brilliantly written. Great characters, stellar writing! I read the short that the author released related to this book and absolutely loved it!! More, please.

What a wonderful read. A rich full story, with amazingly developed characters, not only the main, but all involved. This author always shows how every individual is special in their way, personal qualities, big hearts, and unique characteristics.

After a bad breakup, losing his job and a place to live, Col returns to his parent's house.
Col has a traumatic past, and a brother locked up at a high-security psychiatric hospital.

Theodore is the heir to the ancient Asquith Hall estate, his nasty parents have high expectations, one of them is Theo getting married and producing an heir, even though Theo told them he’s gay.

They’re another nasty character who’s trying to sabotage Theo.
Col has already a lot to deal with, he doesn’t need anyone harassing him.
Without giving too much away, both have a lot on their plates. All are well developed, as we know this author can!!
But with joined forces, Theo and Col manage to solve heavy problems.
I love them together, they are such a perfect fit. They overcome so much! There’s so much growth and not only for Theo and Col

There are some intriguing secondary characters.
When I get to understand the trauma, I just went quiet, very still, my heart hurt so much for them. I was flabbergasted.
Overall a grand story, with depth, rich characters, and a clever plot.

This one had me wondering how things would play out from the start. There were a few things going on in this and all very interesting. I can't wait to see what happens in book 2.

I have come to absolutely adore the characters created by Barbara Elsborg. I love their quirkiness. I love their spirit. I love their spunk (you can interpret that either way). I love their love of chocolate and crisps - although I would always choose cheese and onion over salt and vinegar. Most of all, I love their beautiful hearts.

Theo Wetherby and Collier Hammond aren’t the only stars of this show. They share the limelight with an amazing plot that has lots of different and intriguing pathways. The lost brother and the tragedy of a sister. The secrets garden. Dastardly and Muttley. Fish and chip suppers. The wonderful and loving foster parents with a Windrush history.

It’s all so well written. If you love a book with great characters and a great plot and it will make you laugh, cry and swoon then this is the one for you. It’s got everything.

It made me want to go running around a stately home to find hidden gardens and stone bunnies and see if the head gardener is called James.

This was an entertaining read, not much drama, dragging a little in between, but overall I enjoyed the story of Theo, heir to a big estate but not taken seriously by his family and Col a stone mason who saves Theo in a dangerous situation and then gets to know him without realizing he is the heir to the castle they work in...
This resembles a Cinderella story and mostly it was fun to read, however, I can not overlook several flaws that annoyed me, for example the 180 degree change of Theos father, who turns from a narrow minded earl with a stick up his ass to a loving father, and (trying not to spoil) with an extra surprise for Theo and the readers...
This development felt forced and again we have the evil mother - you'd think female romance authors would be a little Kinder with their own sex, but no, all the women here are just evil bitches and all characters completely black and white, and quite ridiculous.
So overall the story kept me entertained but it didn't really hook me and it didn't leave a lasting impression. 3 stars for me

He’s The One by is a rich and wonderfully written novel about finding love when everything else is falling apart.
Spare and reluctant heir Theo Wetherby and stone carver Collier Hammond may seem like an unlikely couple, but they are so good together. They’ve both had difficult childhoods, and cling to their secrets. But the connection they have is instant, and as they slowly get to know each other and fall in love… it’s a lovely journey.
There are some dark themes (death of a sibling, horrible off page abuse of a secondary character), but they are balanced by moments of teasing banter and pure joy at being together that will make you smile.
Theo is an absolute darling - sweet, awkward, prone to blurting out hilarious observations…. He deserves all the good things. When he finally prevails over two hiss-inducing characters - it was just so satisfying.
And gentle, artistic Col. He went through the wringer. Childhood trauma, guilt over things beyond his control, a cheating ex who wouldn’t let go…. Meeting Theo changed everything.
I loved seeing Theo find his voice and his father finally see how awesome he is. The marquess had his own burdens, and this father son reunion was heartfelt.
Col’s parents were the best. The way they pulled him out of his slump was creative and showed how well they knew their son.
Plus there is a stately home with a hidden garden and water maze, a fox named Isla, sexy first times, an intriguing gardener named James, and two MCs you can’t help rooting for. The fairy ball at the end is magical and the perfect HEA. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

There are several things that this author does here that makes me absolutely DESPISE her >:-o ...
a) I HATE that the women that are absolute OTT CUNTS get away with it, in all likelihood, by sheer virtue of being women; b) I HATE that the sweetheart MCs are such doormats to the vile scum assholes that force themselves into their lives >:-o; c) I hate that the author allows the vilest, scummiest, most disgusting villains to get away with their behavior and how shitty they treat the MCs for a multitude of reasons, with the MCs NEVER calling them out or putting them in their place; lastly d) I hate that the author probably thinks that "being the bigger person" means allowing garbage people to act like garbage and that they should be forgiven for it, because it's the sweet person's responsibility in doing so!!! While this IS fiction, there are things the author does and how she handles or navigates everyday situations in the life of a book that just shows you who the author is, and this author just shows me she is really fucking aggravating, problematic, and fucking obnoxious!!!! I would not be surprised if she were extremely woke, extreme left, and that it is the victim's responsibility to just put up with and forgive all the villains in life!!! The unjust way she manipulates the story here in favor of the villain [which ALL extreme woke and extreme leftists do], just gives me the fucking creeps and just makes me absolutely LIVID >:-o!!!!
I am NOT going to fucking talk about it anymore!!!

Theo is a cute mess, conditioned to hide his personality and conform to his cold mother and grandmother, and emotionally absent father. He's theoretically the heir to his father's land and title, because his older brother disappeared years ago, and he loves his ancestral home. But his ideas and contributions get shot down by their unpleasant property manager, and he can't trust his parents to ever take his side.

Enter Col, a young stonemason working on the mansion roof. The two men meet when Col shoves Theo out of the way of a falling stone. With Col, Theo can let out all of his scattered, kind, funny, motormouth personality. Col is charmed and amused, and even when he loses the job, he hopes to continue to see Theo. But Col just got out of a bad relationship with a man who kept a wife and kids on the side. Col also has a brother in prison, with a secret that could lead to horrible publicity. Navigating his nasty ex, his lack of work, and protecting his brother takes a lot out of Col.

This book was highlighted by the ridiculous, funny charm of Theo. The warmth of Col just letting Theo run with his thoughts, and supporting him, was sweet. I had a few plot quibbles (notably a severe head injury with minimal consequences.) But the writing was smooth and the characters pulled me along through the story.

I’m not quite sure to think about this one. On one hand, I enjoyed a lot of it, on the other one, I was overcome with frustration that eclipsed my enjoyment of the story.

I had problems with the trope with the cheating violent ex and the vengeful then remorseful wife of said cheating ex that was just… easy, seemingly just to add to the overall angst of Col’s whole situation with his super troubled childhood because of dark family trauma and loss of job even if he’s super qualified because the universe is against him and that’s how him and Theo has to bond. Hmm.

And I was also super frustrated by Theo’s situation with his family and coworkers that consider him a pushover and discard everything he’s trying to implement at work, and Theo’s father that progressively wakes up and stands up for himself and his son after years of thinly veiled verbal and emotional abuse by his wife and mother-in-law towards him and his son. Kinda late to the party, my guy…

The only 100% positive things are James, who was an angel with the world’s patience, and the domain, that I loved to explore with the characters.

The intro was not successful in selling me on the idea that Col was devastated by finding out that he was the other man in a relationship. It probably would've been better if it was written in first person, but having it in third person without very many sensory details just made it feel fallout and unemotional.

Col's relationship with his clearly mentally unstable brother was confusing. I'm not sure if we were meant to feel like we had no clue what was happening, but I guess that was a way to tell us that they'd been abused as kids? I'm still not super sure. Things were made even more confusing when Col called his mom (who apparently was an adoptive mother who didn't end up actually adopting them). Then his cheating BF comes home and then he has to deal with that. Theta something to be said about establishing clear problems and conflict, but was not drawn in at all with the writing (both confusing and too explicit) and pacing.

I had a bit of a hard time getting into the book. Both main characters are portrayed in the first parts in a way that made me want to kick some people in the behind - those treating them like crap and also the MCs for being such doormats. It was a bit too much, a bit over the top for me.
The book then got over that hurdle, they actually developed some character and spine and got from doormats to more interesting beings. Their chemistry was good, the story nice and entertaining. The whole book created a wholesome feeling for me and I enjoyed it. I loved the whole set up, the tidbits that gave the whole story some flesh and color.
I have to admit though, the ending was a bit too much fairy tale like because the whole twist with Theo's dad was a bit too instant.
But all in all an enjoyable read that I would recommend.

If you want to be surprised with your storylines...
If you want to fully love and hate your characters...
If you want to laugh out loud at the banter within those pages then you must experience a Barbara Elsborg story.

This was such clever story, the differences between Cole and Theo couldn't have been more extreme if you looked. Yet through the many twists and turns and secrets revealed these two guys get their hard earned hea.

There are so many people to dislike, stroke that, to actually hate that my heart ached for both Cole and Theo. One is a reluctant lord with his future laid out and all of his options removed, but Theo is about to find some backbone. His unloving and uncaring family have turned this sweetheart into a scared little mouse of a man, till he meets the man of his dreams.
Col is a talented man that carves art out of stone, he's had a horrendous childhood and has a huge secret to shoulder as he navigates life. He's just come out of a one sided relationship and then lost his job, as he moves back in with his parents he believes he's hit rock bottom. However fate has a few tricks up it's sleeve and throws Cole and Theo together, as Cole spends more time at Asquith House he discovers more than he could ever have imagined. The more he chips away atthe stately home the more he effects the many inhabitants, both good and bad. Will he be able to keep his past hidden or will his ex come back to haunt him?

But Theo! He never knew standing up for his beliefs could trigger off so many events.

I enjoyed this story so much, I adored the bumbling Theo who has no control over his thoughts, and Cole who never knew how special he was. Excellent writing that just took me away on a journey of angst and joy and love.

Probably my new favourite of Barbara's ! Theo and Col are amazing!

- Different upbringings
- Lord X Stonemason
- Inexperienced MC
- Both MCs with interesting family backstories

Col, a stonemason, and Theo, a lord, meet when the former is doing some work at Asquith Hall!
Their connection and friendship and conversations suck you in, the family secrets and suspense keep you on your toes, and their love heals your heart <3

The side characters are also very unique, and there are things you would not expect. Personally, I am super intrigued by Dominic; Col's older brother who has suffered a lot - no spoilers other than that ;p

Sadly the struggle was real and I wasn't sure if I'd ever finish this story. I actually stopped to read a different book and then came back to this one. I was really interested whenever Col's brother Dominic was mentioned and the glimpses into their awful childhood history. But the bulk of this story revolved around two characters that I just couldn't get invested in. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't find Theo's constant babbling of whatever random thoughts entered his head at any given moment to be particularly funny or endearing. Major eye rolling happened instead, and when you add this to a slow moving, somewhat boring storyline I was just ready to move on.
