Patrick McNulty has done it again with the third installment of his standalone Monsters and Mayhem series, God of the Dead.

When Riverbend sheriff Brady finds sixteen year old Hannah, she has no idea what is soon to fall upon upon her small town. As a well-equipped and well-trained band of mercenaries lay siege to Riverbends police station, it's up to Brady, her wife Mia, and a ragtag band of officers to protect Hannah. But as the God of the Dead seeks to rise, something worse than they could ever imagine is about to be unleashed.

McNulty has consistently raised the bar with each entry to the M&M collection, and God of the Dead is no different. It's absolutely jam-packed full of action, and when the horror elements present themselves, they do so with a gut punch. Each character is carefully crafted and three dimensional and it's easy for the reader to invest in the lives of those who reside in Riverbend. The ending comes at you like a juggernaut with huge potential for a follow up in the future. If you've already devoured A Dark Breed and Avernus Island, then don't sleep on God of the Dead. If you haven't yet picked up any of the series, this is your sign to grab those books! You can thank me later :)

In a word: OUTSTANDING! I can’t say I’m surprised by how good Patrick McNulty’s new book is: being the third entry in his Monsters & Mayhem Collection of standalone horror books, it’s the work of an experienced writer, who knows both how to make you care about the characters and the story and how to keep your interest alive throughout the book.

‘God of the Dead’ is anything but a slow-burn, it’s very fast-paced, with short chapters, sharp dialogue, spooky situations, and above all, it’s action-packed! The action is literally non-stop, and the spirit of adventure is quite infectious: I could actually feel the raw emotion these people felt, I could relate to their plight, and root for them! And what a plight: a small-town sheriff with her wife, trying to protect a possessed sixteen-year-old girl from her para-military captors, are forced to go through hell: they fight, they’re hunted, they resist, they lose people, they face death head-on, their love for each other convincingly realistic, without any unnecessary drama. McNulty also keeps the horror elements on a tight leash: he has every chance and every reason to overdo it, allow his story to turn into a sort of “Stranger Things” for adults, but he never goes overboard – everything is explained precisely, somberly, the horror absolutely needed for the plot, driving the story to its explosive ending! The fight and shooting scenes are beautifully descriptive, cinematic, and detailed. Towards the end, an atmosphere reminiscent of apocalypse stories dominates, giving us a glimpse of how a zombie story would feel in McNulty’s hands (it’d be terrific!)

In sum, you simply cannot go wrong with this book; it hits all the marks, no fluff! Come along for the bumpy ride, there’s plenty of action, good old horror, and never a dull moment! Do not miss this winner!

Three books, three five-star reviews. That's impressive.

This is the third and final (to my knowledge) of McNulty's "Monsters and Mayhem" collection, and every single book has been utterly mind-blowing. Every one—as the series promises—featured a monster...and mayhem...lots and lots of mayhem.

But here's the thing I've noticed about this author...

There's a right way and a wrong way to do creature features. The wrong way is to come up with a really cool monster, then just throw bodies at it for the sake of the gore and death and mayhem.

The smarter way is to give us characters that we absolutely don't want to see die. Characters that we see ourselves in. Characters that we care about. And then bring in that cool monster.

McNulty throws the wildest stuff at us (and this final book has the wildest of the bunch, believe me), but before he does, he takes time and care to ground the reader in a very real, very relatable world before he begins slapping us around with the mayhem.

And good lord, can he bring the mayhem. Once the action starts, it simply does not let up, and I mean that in all the best ways. His writing is believable, the plots are simple, yet effective, and there's one thing that's very important to me that he does well.

For all this stuff to happen? It happens without the characters making incredibly stupid decisions.

McNulty now sits toward the very top of my favourite horror authors list. And I'll read anything he writes now.

This was a great fast past novel .I mean super fast. The best one yet. I really felt this could have been a series. A part of me was hoping Hannah would somehow get threw this and Brady. This even made me think if this was your child wtf would you do. Your child's a killer but you have to hand her over to soilders..could you ? Idk.. honestly 😐🤨 All this happens because of and evil doctor and his experiments trying to bring some ancient God bk and she's a perfect match. I did not like the ending I found this one sad..I liked these characters was praying for a peaceful ending at least but hey it's horror 😳🤣😭🤣😭 SERIOUSLY THOUGH READ IT ..IT KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT ..I LOVE THIS AUTHOR AND HE IS JUST THE NICEST GUY ❤️

God of the Dead (Monsters & Mayhem Book 3) was the best one yet in this collection! It was super-fast paced hut such a thrilling ride. From the beginning, you are drawn into this captivating story. This book keeps you along for the story, and you'll find yourself endlessly wanting more. Patrick McNulty tells a story with horror, monsters (obviously!), mercenaries, and so much more. This book is a MUST read. My review does not begin to do this justice. At this point, just pick up the book and read it for yourself!!! You will not be disappointed! Can't wait to see what Patrick McNulty writes next!

I have to say I enjoyed the story as a whole! 👏 It is definitely fast-paced and the action was nonstop! ❤️ At times I was squirming in my seat - creepiness abounds in this book! 🫣

I do feel three of the chapters earlier in the book didn’t exactly flow as smoothly as they could have; they almost seemed out of order which took me out of the story for a bit with questions. 🤷🏼‍♀️

With that said, I would still recommend this to those looking for a fast-paced creepy read! Patrick McNulty continues to be one of my must-buy authors!! ❤️

Thank you so much Patrick McNulty for sending this ARC in exchange for my honest review! ❤️

Patrick McNulty’s Monsters and Mayhem Collection just keeps the hits coming! I was lucky enough to snag book 3 in advance and dropped everything to dive in!
The opening absolutely grabs you right from the start with tension and curiosity, and really, it never stops. While there are A LOT of name drops for characters, the main ones stand out eventually and you won’t want to miss what happens to them. 😳
If you thought A Dark Breed was full of dread and Avernus Island had lots of creepy characters just wait till you read this one!

That was an exciting read. The adrenaline needed for this book was immense. There was a lot of, “oh hell no!” And “what now?”; going on in this book as I read along. Leave it to the military and some delusional scientist to find a rock and try to find out what the rock can do. Well bet they wished they had not put Hannah on that rock. Especially since they had no idea what they were messing with. Once the ‘joining’ happened; no one was prepared for what came next. The book careened along until that crazy ending. What!?! I was not prepared for the end. 5⭐️

Loved every part of this book. It quickly became one of my favorite books of the year. Patrick really knows how to drawl you in and make you so immersed in the story. There’s so many questions I have unanswered and I hope he makes a part 2 of this one. If you like happy endings, Patrick’s books are not for you. But the elements he brings to his books will have you in total awe!

Having read the first two books in the M&M Collection, I knew I had to read this one (especially with that awesome cover!). This one definitely did not disappoint!

Brady Crowe is a Veteran and Sheriff of a small town named Riverbend. When she finds a young girl named Hannah who appears to be injured, she knows that she has to do whatever is necessary to help her. However, she has no way of knowing what horrors will soon be unleashed.

The book is action-packed and fast-paced as Brady, her Deputies, and her wife soon find themselves fighting for their lives against a team of mercenaries who are after Hannah. As if that wasn't enough, Hannah seems to be possessed by some entity that is full of its own violence.

The characters are well-developed and even though some of them were only in the book for a short time, I still found myself feeling like I knew them (even the ones who didn't last long!). The strength of the characters in the face of horrendous danger really brought them to life. The ending was open-ended enough that I could definitely see a sequel.

If you enjoy a well-written horror tale with a unique type of entity, give this one a try. I look forward to seeing what the author has in store in his next book because I'm sure it will be equally terrifying!

God of The Dead is the third book in The Monsters and Mayhem Collection by Patrick McNulty and wow, what a fantastic addition to the collection. It’ll grab you from the first page with dark vicious claws, and hold tight long after you finish the last page. I was left in a whirlwind of emotions and as soon as I finished reading it, I started it all over again. You will be sitting on the edge of you seat holding your breath. This is everything you want in a horror story. You have the unthinkable, mind altering, reality bending story that only a master of story telling can achieve. I can’t wait to see what will be next in the The Monsters and Mayhem Collection. Patrick McNulty can really weave an absolutely wickedly demented tale. You really can’t go wrong reading anything by him as long as you are willing to lose a little sleep and are ready to stalk him for his next book. Hahaha

Continuing the Monster and Mayhem series in the exact same bloody, gory, action-packed vein, here’s the author’s latest.
Instead of a cute, all-around-decent apple pie sort of family, this book upgrades to a lesbian duo, one of whom kicks ass and the other mostly provides a nice foil, as they risk it all to save a young girl from … well, not exactly the clutches of evil, but something very similar.
A fun backstory, but all too brief and entirely too much action for my liking, this book starts off early and never lets up, but if you’re into that sort of thing, you’ll have fun.
As always, an easy one sitting read. As dynamic as a car chase/crash movie sequence. Nice dark ending, too.

Mcnulty has done it again! I thought the Dark Breed was my favorite from the Monsters & Mayhem collection but this scrappy story is fighting tooth and nail for the top spot. Fast paced, edge of your seat action, disturbing, could not put it down. Slightly disappointed with the typos, they did take away from a smooth reading experience but not enough to detract from a great story. Would have loved a little more backstory for Hannah ( what was special about her DNA)? Absolutely loved the ending, I was praying it wouldn't be a skip into the sunset ( well in their condition, limp in the sunset) kinda ending and it wasn't. 3 for 3 Mcnulty, excellent job on this collection!

-the dead (no spoiler, it's in the title!)
-killer cover
-well written
-dialogue - nailed it
-cinematic (this author used to be a screenwriter, so... yeah!)
-fast paced and action-packed right out of the chute
-strong cast of characters with depth and substance (especially the Latina main character and LGBTQ heroine!)
-the ending *chef's kiss*

I've enjoyed everything I've read from Patrick McNulty and this was no exception. Tons of action and fast-paced! Though my favorite from this collection is still A Dark Breed, this was a great addition. While I do wish this one had more background and perhaps more about Hannah as a person, it was a fun read. Patrick is a must-read author for me and I'd highly recommend ANY of the books in this collection.

Thank you to the author for providing a review copy.

I did not love this book as much as I wanted to. I never cared about the characters, as we're never given much to go on as to who they are. They also make some supremely stupid decisions - the literary equivalent of yelling at the movie screen. Even so, McNulty does a great job of keeping things tense and action-packed. I also enjoyed the ending. 3 stars

Another great addition to the Monsters and Mayhem series. All the books are quite different so I didn't know what to expect with this one, but I got what I got with the other stories, great characters well written and lots of action and horror. Lots of feeling here and a wild ride. I recommend any of the three books, just dive in somewhere and you are guaranteed a nice getaway to horrorviille for a short stay.

This book had me mad. I thought it was going to be about zombies. It’s not. I really thought it was a different genre. However, this author kept me interested to see what happens next. He is very much a cross between Michael Crichton & Dean Koontz. Recommend this book: it’s a true supernatural thriller.

Amazing series

I couldn't stop reading each book. Not your typical ghost story. Characters are believable, writing style flows and all three stories are spooky as hell. Glad I stumbled upon this author who is now one of my favorites.

They thought Hannah was just a runaway, found bloodied and exhausted in a small town, but Hannah is something more. In the quiet town of Riverbend, Sheriff Crowe and her deputies fight against the mercenaries sent to eliminate Hannah but the battle is not just the last hope for the girl but what she is becoming.

The third in the Monsters & Mayhem Collection this is another cracker of a story. The action never lets up and it flies along at breakneck speed. Sparky dialogue and viscerally descriptive prose make this, like the previous two in the collection, a fast and furious read, it’s addictive and emotionally charged.

Hannah, just a teenager, caught up in the machinations of others and desperate to escape. Brady, the Sheriff, is more than she looks and she will fight to protect Hannah and her town whatever the cost. Mia, her wife and town doctor is compassionate and loving. Mars the mercenary, hardened, efficient and stone cold. All of them thrown together to meet their fate. As always the characters are incredibly well written, they feel real and you care what happens to them.

I love these stories, they are not just gloriously gruesome horrors but tales of reality clawed open and devoured. Wonderful!
