Papercut: A Chap-style Book of Prose

Rate this book
"...'unknown' mark the graves
the land is well kept, but none are buried beneath
boredom and a back road brought us there
sage dust and ailing wrought iron led the way..."

With a chapbook affection nesting at its core, Papercut: A Chap-style Book of Prose breaks from the conventional thematic-form poems to favor layered narratives that recount the poet's assorted thoughts and observations on the past and world at large.

Behind each turn of phrase, under every analogy, an air of revelation waits to be discovered. Like the papercutting arts of old, these poems may appear cursory at first glance but reveal worlds of dimension with each read.

With recurring themes in love, loss, the intimate pursuit of a spiritual self, and understanding how time and experience help guide our humanity, readers of Ty's works have come to enjoy an often deeply reflective tone at the heart of his poetry, encouraging them to ponder the bigness of the world around them through the wonderment of words.

as only Gardner can do

This new collection is engrossing. Gardner finds new ways of outdoing himself in the areas he does best: nostalgia with a breath of hope and an undercurrent of cynicism; finding an entire world in something as commonplace as shrubbery; a brief ode to his family that packs a punch in so few lines. I find this talent incredible. So few can pull it off.

A fascinating, mood-altering book of prose. The author gives us a passenger-seat view of his world, so we may feel what he felt for a fleeting moment through repetition, skilled wordplay, and a fierce command of language. Such is the case with "Cellar Spiders" and "Carefully Pressing These Into Bottles." This exploration of language becomes a fruitful reading journey by exposing readers to the author's blunt, and sometimes painfully honest, accounts of his inner world. An example of this would be my favorite piece in this book "Hope is a Wretched Thing." Highly enjoyed it and recommend it!
