Avery Shaw is looking forward to a quiet—but entertaining—day in court when a furious plaintiff takes off after losing what Avery believes to be one of the funniest cases she’s ever covered. Avery gives chase because she wants an interview, and her life is thrown into turmoil during the melee that follows. Alice Wendell likes to sue people. She’s made a name for herself suing neighbors, police officers, dogs, and even dates. That’s why, when a car is aimed at her in downtown Mount Clemens, it’s not exactly a surprise. The ensuing explosion is, however, and Avery is there for the unfortunate aftermath. When she wakes in the hospital following a serious head injury, she finds Alice is dead…and maybe not from the blast that took out the clocktower downtown. Once back on her feet, Avery is determined to chase the case. Her boss, husband, and the very annoyed sheriff in charge of the death investigation have other plans…and they involve Avery being pushed to the puff piece beat until she’s no longer shaky from the explosion. Avery Shaw is not going down without a fight, however. She’s determined to get to the bottom of things, even if she dies in the process. There’s something hinky going on at the biggest hospital in the county, and Avery won’t stop until she knows exactly what that something is. That puts a target on her back, and the individual aiming at that target just might have the upper hand. It’s a fight to the finish for Macomb County’s favorite reporter. Will she survive to claim yet another win, or is this finally the end for Avery Shaw?
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
When I first started reading this series, I loved the Avery Shaw character. She was funny, and her antics, though a little immature, were always entertaining. Now, I can't even finish the book. The "I'm not like other girls" schtick is getting tired and worn out. Instead of being witty, Avery is a giant a**hole. She's rude, selfish, and egotistical. I know this is just a fictional person, but it makes me want to vomit how people allow Avery to act like a raging douche and then defend her. And the whole "Wow, you really get her" line is also getting super tired🙄 Like she's so profound or complicated. I know 4 year olds with better manners and respect for their fellow human beings than Avery shows. The author has really gone off the rails with this one... maybe it's time for Avery's next " near death" experience to finally stick. Sort yourself out & stop writing this character as sn über twatwaffle!
Avery Shaw is definitely my favorite character. Snark, humor, A mystery to solve, and great characters. What more can you ask for? As always a very comes through and makes you wish the next book was already here.
I think I have had enough of this series. They are very formulaic- ie the same story over and over again. Avery is annoying but at risk; Eliot is so worried he has to stay with her while she solves the case and Jake tries to solve it first. Amanda M Lee is a good writer and funny but- even though I have been waiting for this book to be released- I found it a bit boring to basically read the same story again. I think Avery needs to have a baby and retire. She is not a likeable character.
Avery is enjoying her day, there's a case in the civil courts that's got her giggling. A woman named Alice is.using a man named Max for standing her up after agreeing to meet her at a restaurant for a date. She's asking for ten thousand dollars for emotional distress. But that's not all, Alice has a reputation for filing frivolous lawsuits, Avery can't wait to interview her. Unfortunately before Avery can reach her All e is big by a car as she is leaving the courthouse, the car then crashes, explodes and bursts into flames. The force of the explosion knocks Avery over causing her to hang her head really hard. It's clear Avery has a concussion and is struggling to stay conscious and coherent. Jake and Derrek rush with her to the.hospital where Avery loses her right to stay awake. Several hours later she comes awake to.find Elliot at her side with Jake still there as well. Elliot is distraught at what has happened and what could have so.easily happened (Alice died) so when doctors release Avery from the hospital it's with orders to.stay on her feet for the next seven days. Yes................like that's going to happen Avery will not be beaten on this, she wants to know who wanted Alice dead (apart from all her victim's) and why they wanted her dead...................
Avery is watching the most crazy lawsuit she's seen, and clearly, the judge isn't having any of it when he insists the confused defendant gets legal help to have the case thrown out... Avery wants to talk to the plaintiff who has threatened to sue everyone, including her, for emotional distress as she's run from the court amid laughter...
As Avery weaves around and out of the courthouse on the hunt for her quote, she's front and centre to see what happens next... and near enough to get knocked to the ground... now both Avery and the plaintiff turned victim are both in hospital, and when she comes too, she's her usual snarky self over the determination of Eliot and Jake to make her follow the doctors orders... 7 days bed rest...
Can she out fox Eliot and start investigating because she knows there's more to this than the comedic case in court...
Avery Shaw is starting her day watching a hilarious court case and ends her day in the hospital. For most people, this would be a sign to take a few days off, but not Avery. She sneaks around the hospital, argues with doctors, coerces Elliot into being her sidekick, and as usual solves the case way ahead of everyone else. Avery Shaw may be my favorite character ever. She is definitely one that I can't read if I have anything else at all that needs to get done that day. I truly hope this series never ends. If I have one wish for a difference in the Averyverse, it would be that the book always ends as she is writing her victory story. Just once I would like to see her victory lap after the story comes out. And more cousin Mario is never a bad thing.
Amanda M. Lee does it get again. Great story line, great plot, and fantastic character details which brings them to life. Avery Shaw and her side kick and glorious husband out smart Jake again and bring down the villain. Of course Make and Derrick are right behind Avery to make the arrest. Great read full of snark, twists and turns, a bit of humor. I will not give anything away you'll have to read it yourself and I bet you anything you will really enjoy it like I did. If you like any of Amanda M. Lee's series you'll love this one too.
I love this series, and frankly, I enjoy most of the series that Amanda M. Lee writes. Avery and Eliot just make me have the giddy happy happy feeling and adding in the hijinks that woman gets into just make it better. The characters are incomparable and the world building is so real you can easily expect to see the town when you glance outside. Add in that glorious family snark and the perfect leading men and there is no way to be disappointed in this book. Note to the author: Please keep this series going, everything about it just makes the world go around.
Back to one of my favorite series. There's a woman who files ultra-crazy lawsuits over anything and everything. Avery follows her outside the courthouse and the woman gets run over by a car which then explodes. Avery gets hurt and is told to stay in bed for a week
Like that's going to happen.
Carly and Lexie will stay with Avery and she goes on her fact-finding drive, finding out that the woman had filed around 40 frivolous lawsuits. It gets more complicated than that, though, and there seems to be something odd about the hospital Avery was treated in.
Another really good story with its usually well done characters and very interesting murder.
I read this book almost non-stop. I couldn't put it down. It was so action packed but with an excellent mystery. At times I was rolling on the floor laughing as I normally do when reading any of Ms. Lee's books. The snark and sarcasm are funny on their own but the authors sense of humor and the way she weaves it into her stories is hilarious. Avery Shaw is a fun character to read especially with her stubbornness to always be right & win. Love this series. I recommend you read the series in order to fully understand the characters and their relationships.
Although Avery got a bit too whiney in this book, I still can't get enough of her antics. This snark and sass on her is the best part. Being a huge Star Wars and horror movie fan enders me even more. Avery always gets the scoop and the mysteries are better for it. I'm thrilled Jake finally popped the question but wish we could have been there for it. Can't wait for the next book!
When I first started this series I found books 1-3 not my thing (missing something). Someone told me read a couple more it improves. She was right and I'm glad I listened.
I really enjoy these now. Each book Avery has grown a little more. The family dynamics are amusing but I can see some of my family in there too.
I would recommend this series and I'd say to any one starting it having a unsure time... keep reading.
A lady whos lifes joy seems to be frivalous lawsuits dies. Avery was trying to get close to her to get comments about the last lawsuit, gets a serious concussion from being in the area of the car exploding.
Lots of snarky comments, plot twists, and complications. Even a cameo by Tad being accidentally helpful.
I love this book and I love Ms. Lee's excellent sense of humor!! I have never laughed so much. Her stories flow easily and keep you entertained. I never felt like there was a lull in the story or a lot of unnecessary filler. She is a very gifted and creative author. You won't be sorry to buy this book.
That us what Avery is, is relentless. She us a dog with a bone, she will not drop a story, even if it could cost her her life. Elliott is just along for the ride. His reactions to her accident and having to deal with her very outlandish family. I give him props for not going Postal on them. He just had them escorted out if the hospital. On to the next adventure. 💚💙
I chose to give this a five star rating, because from the very first book I have been a fan of the heroine Avery, and every book her story just keep getting better. She's come a long way and grown up alot. Each book shows that maturity. And she still maintains that humor and heart that keeps you waiting for the next book.
I love Avery! To me this was her best so far. It made me sad, and it made me laugh out loud! Not only at Avery, but at Eliot and Jake as well. Like I said, my favorite so far!
I wish I could be more like Avery. This is such a good series. It should be read in order to understand the.character's dynamics. I can't wait for.the.next.story Avery scoops.
I love all the characters in this series. Avery is smart, tough and mouthy. She has a take no prisoners attitude. It is nice seeing a female character that doesn't need to be saved by a guy.
Author provided summary covers basics. No spoilers. This story was quick paced and I was glad Avery wasn't down for long. Her family is a trip. Elliot is a saint. Looking forward to next in series.
So often husbands ruin the heroine buy Avery has the perfect man; and I think Amanda is the reason. She is super talented. Elliot knows how to love her just the way she is. Avery's family we all know and love to enjoy bc it's not our own.
Out of all the series I read, Avery Shaw has to be the best, hands down! I love her snark, her confidence and strong will. The only problem, I read them too fast.😊
This is awesome, and shows you that family members came in a forms. In this book you will find people who think they know what is best, but hard to just let Avery be who she is.
Avery Shaw is one of my favorite characters. Her series is one of the few I automatically buy without reading reviews or summaries. The story was funny, sad, and thoroughly entertaining
I love the growth in her marriage, her family, and friends. I like that in this one she sees an issue but is not sure what it is that she sees. Her instinct is on point.
Strong, consistent characters. Tight well edited writing. Nicely paced and developed. A fun read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
She's annoying, whiny, funny and gets the job done. I love that Avery does what she wants but helps people too. This one had several twists. I don't want to give anything away but you will enjoy it! Can't wait for the next one.
Avery Shaw, the death mining reporter, won't stop until she gets the nugget that solves the case. Many people, readers included, want to shut her up, strangle her, or see Duncan scoop her. I hope another book comes out soon!
Absolutely love Avery and this story didn’t disappoint from start to finish! The relationship she has with Elliot and jake is like no other she’s a force to be reckoned with! Can’t wait for the next book
What can I say. Amanda M. Lee knocked it out of the park again! I absolutely love Avery Shaw and all her snark! Avery is one of my favorite characters to ever grace the pages of a book! Keep on writing Ms. Lee.
