The Review

This was a compelling and captivating read. The blend of YA and historical romance really elevated the story to new heights. The incredible imagery the author utilized in their writing allowed the vast deserts and grand palaces of Babylon and Egypt to come to life so beautifully on the page. The tension that built both during Aoh’s time in Babylon hiding her identity and her time serving the Pharaoh and her role as a protector was so well placed here and allowed the reader to feel the political and social problems being stoked by the royalty and those scheming behind the scenes.

The heart of this story rested in the fantastic character development, especially with the protagonist Aoh. The story felt like a full hero’s journey for her, as she went from this young woman with a bit of wonder for the world outside her own to a powerful warrior and stealthy protector as she moved through the noble houses of the elites. The bond she formed with Laggus was great to see play out, and the way the story highlighted the need to end the violence and bloodshed between people who fight because they come from different backgrounds or areas altogether was great to see unfold in the action and suspenseful moments of the narrative.

The Verdict

If you were to cross the politics of Game of Thrones with the action of 300 and the rich romance and character growth of The Mortal Instruments Series, then this will be the book for you. Author Jennifer Renson’s “Aoh” is a must-read historical fiction meets romance and YA novel, and the incredibly rich settings and deeply emotional and engaging character growth this book develops, as well as the open-ended ending, will have readers wanting more of this incredible novel.

Aoh is an absorbing young adult novel with a riveting plot of deception, loyalties, perils, manipulations, secrets and love. In a drastic change of events, what if you are left defenseless with dangers surrounding you on all corners? With the ones you promise to protect, their lives hanging loosely on dreadful thread, it's up to the protagonist to save them all including herself.

The story follows Aoh, a young girl who escapes her homeland when the place where she resides with her family gets lethally attacked. She then seeks refuge under the care of queen Huriya at a Babylonian palace.

However as fate would have it, soon Aoh finds her back in Egypt and disguised as a palace servant.

With secrets and lies, deception and loyalties gaining an upper hand, will Aoh be able to get success in her path or will it be doused in the flames?

The plot is absolutely riveting. The touch of ancient civilization enriched scenes merged with the anticipation and excitement of unpredictable twists and turns definitely kept me glued. The riveting details of Egypt were impeccably astounding. The author has masterfully crafted a strong world building and strong characterization. The second half of the book is a total rollercoaster, it kept me glued.

If you're intrigued by the fascinating plotline with memorable characters then I would highly recommend this book.

I don't even know where to start with this review... this book was truly unlike anything I've ever read before, in the best way. I was captivated by AoH and Egypt. The writing was incredible and I really didn't have any clue where the book was going.

Blurb -
After her village is attached AoH has to flee from Egypt. Surviving the desert on her own she finds herself taken in by the Queen of Babylon and enters a whole new world.
Unforeseen circumstances cause her to return to Egypt, where she ends up as a servant/protector in the pharaoh's Palace.

I truly felt like I was in Egypt and the palaces at times. There were many moments where it was almost like I could feel the heat and hear the arrows whooshing.

Overall I absolutely loved it and I can't wait to read Jennifer's other book.

Aoh follows a young Egyptian woman whose life changes dramatically after fleeing her homeland and finding unexpected shelter in a Babylonian palace. Her return to Egypt brings another dangerous turn as she is forced to live disguised as a servant.

I liked the contrast between the luxury of the palace and the dangers Aoh faces as she tries to protect herself and the woman close to the pharaoh. The deception and shifting loyalties give her journey plenty of tension.

The story should appeal to readers who enjoy historical fiction with romance, palace intrigue, danger, and characters navigating difficult circumstances while trying to survive.
