Two queer thirtysomethings—a buttoned-up art director and a comedian—learn first impressions aren’t forever in Valerie Gomez’s sparkling contemporary romance debut perfect for fans of Alexis Hall and Casey McQuiston.

“Don’t panic, just breathe,” Dax Ximénez tells himself after every gig. About to become a household name with the premiere of his own TV show, he should be flying high, and he is…on the surface. But all of the pressure and attention make him want to retreat into the safe cocoon of his warm family home in Queens. The last thing he needs is a prickly art director judging him at his first magazine cover shoot—no matter how handsome he is.

The shoot is a huge opportunity for AJ Bond to prove himself worthy of a promotion at The Modern Gentleman, but Dax showing up late is not a good look. The vibe is off, and AJ’s original vision is going down in flames—until Dax lets his natural charisma and gorgeous smile shine. After the shoot wraps, AJ knows they’re both on the verge of something big, not just professionally.

Neither AJ nor Dax can stop thinking about the other, hoping their magic wasn’t confined to the studio. As the magazine and show launches approach, they’ll rely on each other for support through the highs and lows of success, fame, anxiety…and maybe even love.

This could have been such a good book but sadly it tried too hard. To say I didn’t enjoy it it would be a big fat lie because I did…sort of. I’m disappointed though because 25% in and I was having a blast despite the not at all impressive writing and then from there on I kept getting annoyed at all the telling telling and not showing, at their lack of communication, at their lack of chemistry and cringe sex scenes , at their inability to put the other person above their own pride. They stuck their foot in their mouth and then they just couldn’t go after the other to mend things. They just waited until the other MC got over it . I was so so disappointed in Dax, he forced AJ to come out from the very beginning , from the first moment he pushed and insisted he tell the world they’re together when AJ had his own anxieties about ppl knowing about his private life but Dax didn’t care about that, of course not .I understand the trauma and the toxic thinking his father and brother caused but he acted like a spoiled brat most of the time.
And what was worse is that he lashed out , insulted AJ, left him, and he immediately realized that he had been OTT and that he was wrong but do you think he talked to AJ? Do you think he said I’m sorry? Oh no, he tried to move on . “Oh, what have I done? Well..ooops ?” And went on with his life. Not even when he heard AJ didn’t get the job , a job that it was extremely important for him, he couldn’t come and pretend at least to look worried or care. And then after he spilled his guts in a comedy club instead of talking to AJ he waited for AJ to come to him and it was AJ who had to do a grand gesture and say I’m sorry. Sorry for what??? And then AJ came out to the whole world . It was a futile gesture because it was forced by Dax and because by that time I thought AJ was better without and I didn’t care.
There were cute moments too, I loved the meet cute, I LOVED their first kiss, the wallet AJ got for Dax (though the whole Peter story was 🙄) .
So , though entertaining the book felt like a debut novel. It lacked a more polished writing, it lacked the ability to transmit emotions and it lacked chemistry. The guys acted very ..uncomfortable around each other. Adding to all that the fact that Dax was an immature brat and you have a book that tried but that it hasn’t succeeded entirely. 2.5 stars rounded up.

What a delightful book. What a beautiful story about navigating new relationships, about intimacy and exploring but not labeling your sexuality, about the importance of taking care of your mental health.

This is the story of Dax, a stand-up comedian and star of a soon to be launched tv series, and AJ, the art director of a big NY magazine. The main characters meet on the set of a photoshoot, and even if their first interaction is a bit awkward and tense, they quickly become friends.

This is a character driven story, with dual POV, so we get to experience both characters' journeys. While Dax is struggling with anxiety and panic attacks, AJ is a very introverted, private individual. They're both in a difficult place in their lives, with lots of professional and personal things happening all at once, things that ultimately get in the way of their relationship. But they work things out, so beautifully. Their connection is intense, they have sizzling chemistry, they're very attuned to one another - all these things made me get the tingly feeling in my fingertips. 🥰 I loved every second of this book.

Dax's mental health is carefully and genuinely handled, and AJ's sexuality is refreshingly addressed - I love the idea of not labeling oneself and not necessarily fitting in a particular category.

The writing is beautiful and inviting, you want to keep reading about these characters, their families and colleagues, you quickly get immersed into their world, desperately wanting to discover more about them. One of the highlights of the book is the amazing representation, we have trans and nonbinary side characters, disability rep, and a lot of fun cultural references, seeing as Dax is Mexican American and AJ's Mom is German.

An emotional debut that pulls at your heartstrings and makes you want to see these characters become the best version of themselves. Highly recommend.

My thanks to the author for providing an ARC. You should definitely add it to your TBR. ❤️

This was such a beautiful story, I didn't want it to end, ever!
And to think this is a debut novel.. amazing.
The characters (main and secondary), the storyline, the writing style, there were so many things that stood out to me.
I loved how diverse the cast of characters was. Plus, it was lovely that AJ didn't feel the need to put a label on his sexuality.

I think the author did an amazing job with Dax's anxiety representation and with AJ's character as well. He was introverted, loved his work and was full of charisma when immersed in his work, and charming and sweet when he felt at ease and understood.

I loved the way the author showed us how vulnerable both MCs were. Both their reactions to emotionally overwhelming situations felt real and relatable. There was nothing artificial about the storyline, it was progressing in a captivating way.

I'll be rereading this for sure in the future, and can't recommend this novel enough!

ps if someone else has trouble finding this book on amazon (like me): It's there, but doesn't pop up immediately, entering the book title or the writer's name. If you go on the author's homepage www.valeriegomezwrites.com and click there on the amazon-button, you'll find it on amazon. I hope they resolve the issue soon, because it's a shame it doesn't pop up immediately.

Okay, first of all, how is this a debut novel?? 🤯 The writing was so impressive - the characters were well-developed, the dialogue was natural, the pacing just right. You name it, she nailed it. I think ‘Cover Story’ gives everything you want in a romcom - it’s funny, sweet, heart rending, and ultimately beautiful and uplifting.

Dax’s backstory was so emotional. One aspect I really appreciated was the author’s depiction of his anxiety and panic attacks. (The overall mental health rep is fantastic.) And AJ’s storylines were no less compelling or important than Dax’s. Both of these characters were constructed and portrayed in such unique but extremely relatable ways.

And the side characters in this were fantastic. They added so much depth and color to the book. Dax’s family, AJ’s coworkers, and all their friends round out the cast superbly. I loved them all so much!

Dax and AJ’s love story was so enjoyable and so completely romantic! Cover Story had so many wonderfully romantic moments (and sexy ones and funny ones!), it had me smiling through so much of it. And the end was just *chefs kiss*. I cannot recommend it highly enough! I think ‘Cover Story’ will be going on my Faves of 2023 list.

So basically I just adored everything about this book. At its core, Cover Story is a debut novel about two imperfect people finding their person.

AJ Bond and Dax Ximénez are two high achieving, successful adults living in NYC. AJ is the art director at The Modern Gentleman magazine (TMG) and Dax is an up and coming actor whose show has just been picked up by one of the top streaming services. When Dax has a scheduled photo shoot at TMG, he and AJ get off to a bit of a rocky start. But then Dax does something unexpected and invites himself out to dinner with AJ. It’s at dinner that the two spend hours getting to know one another, both seeming to agree that this is the start of a great friendship. As time goes on and the two spend more time together, it’s apparent that their platonic feelings have turned into more. But will the stress of high-demand careers allow for the two of them to be together?

I loved these characters. I’m coming off some pretty heavy reads recently and breathed such a sigh of relief going into this book and genuinely liking both MCs right from the start. I need more of that in queer romances! The chemistry between D&AJ was incredible. Mental, physical, emotional; they really had so much fun together and I loved watching it unfold. It was all so organic and their transition from friends to romantic partners was seamless. We also need to talk about the beautifully written representation in this book! Mexican-American MC, developmental disability rep, trans and non-binary rep, unlabeled sexuality, and mental health… I loved it all. I also have to praise the author for making these characters in their early 30s because this is an age group that seems to be so underrepresented in queer literature. If what I’ve written so far still has you on the fence, I leave you with this: A+ character growth and tear-shedding found family.

**Side note: As if the book wasn’t incredible enough, the author also illustrated her own gorgeous book cover! Can you imagine that much talent in one person?!

Thank you to the author for this ARC 💕

What a gem this was! And a debut novel, at that. Valerie Gomez has refined writing skills right out of the gate. She has crafted a tale of 2 queer men (both of whom are compulsively lovable) and created them with such empathy and heart that you can't help but to root for both of them.

The entire story was so effortlessly sweet and touching -- meaningful, yet not overly-complex. There is a power to be found in simplicity sometimes, and there were moments like that in the book that really allowed it to shine.

As mentioned above, the strongest part of the novel are our two main characters, Dax and AJ. I loved getting the POV of a queer Mexican-American character, because it's not a POV that I've come across too frequently. The diversity was refreshing and much appreciated.

It was a joy watching both of our protagonists learn about the flaws and faults of the other, and still managing to make room for love and acceptance. Overall, the story leaves you with a full heart -- and if a book manages to do that, I'd say the author has done their job -- and done it well.

Big thank you to Valerie for sending me a copy of this book -- I cannot reiterate enough how much of an absolute delight it was to read this!

Really, really disappointed in the biphobia here. I got halfway into this - enjoying it - only to have Dax get all weird that AJ has dated women before, and bring up the idea that AJ is only dating him to satisfy curiosity. I tried to roll with it with Dax's trans woman friend/manager previously accused AJ of basically the same thing but this was too much. It's 2023, y'all. I am TIRED of gay and lesbian MCs acting like it's news that some queer people date or have dated more than one gender. Then AJ having to defend himself & convince Dax to stop being concerned? That's a nope from me.

It was particularly disappointing because back near the beginning of the book, Dax's narration actually did a decent job with this - he was like "guy's probably straight, here are my several pieces of indirect evidence." Keyword *probably* = good! But then don't act like it invalidates the relationship & like you need special reassurance if it turns out the guy is not gay!

This is the kind of book you don’t want to put down because you’re so invested in seeing the MCs get their happy ending. It’s also the kind of book that’s so easy to relate to.

Both AJ and Dax are making big strides in their lives when they have a meet cute on the set of a photo shoot in NYC. From there, the story continues with ups and downs that anybody could experience, especially those of us who have struggled with mental health, self-worth, family dynamics, work stress, and the uncertainty of a new relationship.

Thank you so much to the author for sharing an ARC with me!

Romance doesn’t need to be grand or rely on tropes to still be a good story. Sometimes you just want a simple character driven rom-com with two men finding and supporting each other through ups and downs. May I introduce you to 𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 a debut novel by Valerie Gomez? Coming September 13th!

Dax is a comedian/actor on the rise, with a TV show yet to premier. AJ is a fashion magazine art director assigned to oversee Dax’s first fashion shoot, but things don’t go quite as expected for either of them. Dax invites himself to dinner after. They put their rough-start aside and enjoy getting to know each other. Friendship turns into unknown feelings, but now’s not a good time, professionally, to start anything for either of them.

I fell for these two lovestruck idiots! Dax and AJ are perfect for each other; introvert + extrovert, hurt + comfort, idiot + fellow idiot 😜 (Miscommunication isn’t reserved for MCs in their teens/20s. I can attest to it very much being real into your 30s 😉)
They learn to rely on each other for support as they navigate careers, fame, and anxiety. Their relationship arc was strong and I loved being here for all of it.

This did not read as a self-publish debut at all! The writing, humor, and pacing was sharp and well executed. Not to mention the incredible supporting characters - Sam, Dax’s manager, mother, and ADORABLE sister!

Valerie made these characters jump off the page and into the reader’s heart. While it tackles some tougher reps such as mental health and family history, I would otherwise call this a fun/comfortable/fluffy read with lots of heart ❤️

Thank you to the author for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'd also thought of his smile, the way it lights up his whole face, like it was made especially for laughter.

Cover Story is a debut novel and if this is the first book by Valerie, then just imagine what fire others would be!
This story follow Dax, soon-to-be TV star, and AJ, art director in TMG magazine. They meet in a photoshoot (which I'd LOVE to see in real life!) and the rest is history 😌

MMCs are extremely loveable! They're so real and I just wanted to hug them both. Because it is NOT easy for AJ and Dax, doesn't matter how it looks for the outsider's eye.
The chosen approach in this book is something we don't think about everyday. I'm talking exceptionally about mental health and... comedians. I loved reading about Dax's struggles which are big. I don't really understand our society (it is really well mirrored in the book): if you are a comedian, that means you should be able joke around 24/7, you are not allowed to be sad or have anxiety and you have to LOVE being in front of the audience. It's even worse for a famous ones: you are your brand. When in reality you are just a... person, with all ups and downs. My heart did hurt for this sunshine, and I try not to think (unsuccessfully) how many real people with the same issues are in this world.

I don't care if his jokes aren't that funny, if the laughs aren't sidesplitting. I just want him to be okay.

Let's move to the relationship Dax and AJ have. Did I mention that I loved every minute of it? Yes, even the hard times. Once again, it felt so real! And I always love the idea of that ONE person in your life who will find you no matter what, who will see you for who you are and who will simply love you even if you're not perfect (because duh, who is??). I loved how AJ's struggles were portrayed – it was not easy for him as well, seeing he's more of a closed person. But how many times he just jumped out of his comfort zone for Dax made my heart melt. We all deserve AJ in our lives!

I believe this unexpected friendship and love did help Dax and AJ grow, and I would love to see their life after a few years. I got attached to these characters since page 1, and was totally invested in their story.
So if you are looking for something real with great anxiety rep (jeez this sounds weird), non-labeling themselves and cute main characters who try really hard, this book is definitely for you! Give it a chance – you won't be dissapointed 💛

What a top tier book! I really couldn't put it down.

This charming contemporary romance tells the story of Dax, a comedian who struggles with anxiety and his newfound fame, and AJ, a creative who is desperately chasing a new promotion. After a meet-ugly on the job, the two discover that maybe the other isn't what they thought. 👀👀

The back cover says this book is for fans of Alexis Hall and Casey McQuiston and it's exactly right. In fact, before I even saw that little blurb, I was reading along thinking, "Wow! This reminds me of all my favorite Alexis Hall books." I think it's because Valerie Gomez balances humor, swoon-worthy romance, and more serious themes all at once. Even the stand-up in the first chapter was funny!

I really appreciated seeing the characters struggle with their trauma and mental health in a really relatable way, but this is also a story about healing and recognizing that sometimes the love of your friends and family isn't enough. You just need a licensed professional. This book sets the standard for what we should all be looking for in a partner—someone who supports us unconditionally, without trying to fix us or ignore our pain, even if it means being honest and saying, "Look, you need help."

Overall, I was blown away by Valerie Gomez's talent! I love Dax and AJ. I will be thinking about them for days to come, pining after grilled cheeses and trips to New York.

Dax Ximénez has anxiety and often gets panic attacks at being in front of crowds...a pretty big deal for an up-and-coming actor who does stand up comedy on the side. His career is about to take off with his own TV show about to premiere. As part of the publicity for the show Dax is sent by his manager to participate in a photoshoot for The Modern Gentleman magazine where he meets the prickly art director AJ Bond who is trying to prove himself to his higher-ups to snag a promotion. After the shoot wraps up AJ and Dax grab dinner together and find themselves hopelessly caught in each other's orbits over the coming months.

Dax and AJ are such great characters that you easily fall into a rhythm with them and fully experience everything with them. It is so easy to root for the boys when Dax is dealing with his anxiety or AJ is trying to deal with his insecurity around his sexuality and work persona. The boys are sweet together and you just find yourself yelling "KISS!" and, when they finally do you just melt. The side characters feel just as real and easy to like as our boys. Dax's family is excellent and watching AJ meet them is really sweet. I really enjoyed the fact that both AJ and Dax are in their early thirties too. So many romances are about guys who are like twenty-five and that makes it a bit depressing for us older spinsters. :P

I fully recommend this book for fans of squishy romances with quite a bit of comedic wit.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read about two MCs so well matched. Dax and A.J were perfect for each other, and they were on the same playing field. it made their relationship more relatable and real

This happened to me with another book by another Latin author, the lingo, and the way Dax´s family is written is so accurate to what a Latin family is and speak. It felt like i was listening to one of my aunts or even my mom. it was wonderful to be represented.

Valerie Gomez did a wonderful job having two characters very career driven without making it feel like work is the only thing on their minds, also handled wonderfully the periods of separation the MCs go through because of their jobs.

But what shines through this book is the romance, the subtle things Dax and AJ experience when they were around each other, how even though they didn’t start the best way there was something pulling them together. I love when MCs are understandable of each other’s needs and challenges, and they love them even more for it.

Both MCs were swoon worthy and I adored them fully.

All the stars to this amazing book

Cover Story by Valerie Gomez immediately drew me in! It firmly captured my attention for a day and didn't let it go until I was finished. You wouldn't think this was a debut with how well Gomez crafts a sweet romance and realistic characters, with unique story elements that I've never read before. It really was the whole package for me: it's steamy, there's cinnamon roll gooeyness, and it's full of moments that made me melt. I rooted for these guys from beginning to end.

It took me no time at all to warm up to our protagonists, AJ and Dax, who are both creatives on the edge of rising in their career fields. Dax is an up and coming comedian, AJ is a creative director for a fashion magazine, and they meet on set for a photoshoot... but it seems like fate has it out for them after several unfortunate misunderstandings that set them off on the wrong foot.

Their chemistry is undeniable from the start, and I found them both deeply relatable. AJ's desire to have somewhere to call home & being nearly estranged from his family, and Dax's deep rooted anxiety and panic attacks that plague him throughout the story. Gomez clearly speaks from a place of experience - these characters felt so real. Even at times when I felt slightly frustrated with them, I realized it was because they were acting on emotions they weren't able to handle just yet. It made them very human and I loved them for it.

I really enjoyed this book and my time with these boys. I found myself craving pizza by the end (but not in a dirty way! Jeez... if you know, you know). I also want to point out how adorable the chapter headers are - art for each chapter is different and I really appreciated it. The chancla graphic made me laugh out loud. It only cements how much love the author put into this story, and I will absolutely pick up anything Gomez writes in the future!

DNF @ 24% – I was sooooo excited to read this book! But, unfortunately, I didn’t like it. AJ and Dax meet and are immediately attracted to each other. They look at each other and their stomachs flutter, they feel electricity when they accidentally touch, etc. MIND YOU! At this point they’re still COMPLETE STRANGERS!!! 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 They kiss after hanging out TWICE and at that point I was like 😑😑😑…… Yeah, okay.

I am soooo fucking tired of insta love!!!!! This isn’t even the worst case I’ve ever seen, but, to me, this romance completely lacked buildup and their instant attraction guaranteed that I won’t rate this book any more than 3 stars, so I’m not even gonna waste any more time with it, hence the DNF.

Other notes I have:
➤ A couple of typos (though it’s self-published so I’ll let that slide)
➤ Everyone was always laughing but there was nothing funny to me. This kind of felt like when you’re hanging out with people and they’re talking about some things they went through together and their own inside jokes. No matter how much they explain them to you, you’ll never fully understand them and you’ll always feel a little detached from the conversation.

Falling in Love with Love

Aaaand I am Full! Like appetizer thru dessert and coffee 10 course meal kind of full.

I loved this book, I loved this couple, and I adored their Love.

Often, reading romance can leave the reader with a sort of, suspense of reality, hangover. Or it can dissipate like cotton candy as soon as the last word is read. This story leaves the reader with a full heart glow.

Even the most emotionally mature adult can carry baggage from life experience, and no matter how far we think we’ve come, allowing yourself to become vulnerable enough to open yourself up for new love while simultaneously accepting whatever your new partner has to reveal at the same time… is messy, but so very worth it.

So is this book. Be prepared and forewarned, once you start, you have likely committed to doing nothing else until you’ve read the last page.

Read it in a day. I've been craving a romance like this: tension and real characters. This was everything I'd hoped for. It was phrased as great for fans of Casey McQuiston and Alexis Hall and I 100% agree with that, as someone who's read some of both works recently. I'd say the writing style was closer to Alexis but the characters kept reminding me of Red, White, and Royal Blue with a bit of One Last Stop atmosphere here and there. I also just fucking adored the anxiety rep and thought it was really well done.

Really solid book. Hope for more from Valerie Gomez in the future.

Oh my god. I loved this. It was amazing! No notes.

There was mental health rep, a character that comes out later in life, characters that just want the best for each other… I loved the story. Dax and AJ have my heart now!

I also loved AJ’s relationship with Sam and that they stayed friends after realizing their romantic relationship wasn’t working (twice). Dax’s family was so cute and supportive, love to see it!

"Cover Story" by Valerie Gomez 💕 is a delightful contemporary romance that left my heart brimming with warmth and joy. The story revolves around the relationship between Dax and AJ, two thirtysomething queer individuals navigating the rollercoaster of fame, success, and personal growth. Their connection is nothing short of magical, and Gomez's portrayal of their blossoming romance is heartwarming. Their banter, shared vulnerabilities, and genuine affection for each other made their love story sweet and endearing. The book explores the complexities of modern relationships, highlighting the importance of communication, trust, and support.

What truly stood out in "Cover Story" was the handling of queer representation and mental health discussions. Gomez crafts these themes with sensitivity and authenticity, allowing readers to connect deeply with the characters. Dax's battle with anxiety and panic attacks is portrayed in a realistic and empathetic manner, shedding light on the importance of mental health awareness and understanding. Despite the presence of some familiar tropes, the book manages to infuse them with freshness, making them enjoyable even for those not typically drawn to such tropes. "Cover Story" is a heartwarming and captivating read that reminds us of the power of love, self-acceptance, and the beauty of finding someone who truly understands you.

i loved this book!! it was so much fun to read. a great romance, valerie gomez found the perfect balance between heartwarming and real. this book was incredibly sweet while also depicting mental health problems and real life issues affecting the characters.

speaking of the characters, i really liked both of them! aj and dax both had their own messy lives and i loved that their characters were developed outside of the context of each other.

overall, the pacing was really nice (which i always look for in romance books) and i enjoyed the plot. it was a great read and i’d absolutely recommend it!

thank you so much again to valerie gomez for sending me an eARC and so many adorable stickers!! i’m incredibly grateful💕

This review was long overdue and it was about time that I shared my opinion about this wonderful book. This is Valerie's debut novel and it was a magnificent start in her writing career.
Dax and AJ meet in a photoshoot. Dax is a comedian whose career just jumped off from the internet and has become famous after filming a tv show. AJ is the art director of a famous magazine and he's aiming to get a promotion, so the shooting is important for him. They start off on the wrong foot, but that eventually becomes a friendship that turns into something else.
Well, I loved this book, but like I really loved it. It was so realistic, the author created two MCs that felt like real, everyday people you might meet or have among your friends. Their struggles were authentic and easy to relate to. The way she described Dax's anxiety touched my heart as I know what that is like.
I enjoyed how they met, how they became friends and something important: how there was no need to label anyone into a sexual orientation. Their first kiss made me sigh and my heart soared with the intimacy and natural way they kissed. Again, it was real and natural, and beautiful.
This is a story of personal growth, being true to yourself and accepting help when needed. Both MCs go through different stages in both their relationship together and individually. I loved the evolution of both Dax and AJ, and how they manage to find a path to stay together where both are happy and successful.
I enjoyed this book immensely because it talks about mental health and its importance. Also, it shows that sometimes relationships are not easy and there are things the MCs need to overcome to get their happy ending. It was a beautiful novel that touched my heart and made me feel so many emotions.
I can't wait for whatever Valerie writes next. I know it'll be another wonderful story.

Cover Story is Valerie Gomez’s debut contemporary queer romance and it absolutely blew me away.

AJ Bond is the Art Director for TMG Magazine, and he prefers to be behind the scenes making the companies vision come to life. Cute but prickly, he is laser focused on making this photoshoot with an up-and-coming celebrity go smoothly and hopefully land himself a promotion.

Diego “Dax” Ximénez is the up and coming celebrity who just landed a photoshoot that might put him further on the map, with a spread covering his soon-to-be-released television show. However, under the surface, tension and fear roll, large crowds he can mostly handle, but everyone gawking at him while photos are taken? Eh, he’d much rather be back in Queens with his loving family.

The two part ways after the shoot but can’t stop thinking about one another. Someone has to make the first move and put something in motion…luckily creative visions to capture attention are AJ Bond’s speciality.

Gomez breathed such realism into these characters, featuring problems and fears that were entirely relatable. I loved the age of the characters (cries in almost thirty), all of the inclusive representation, and the mix of lightheartedness with serious topics sprinkled throughout.

Thank you to the author, Valerie Gomez, for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this book to enjoy and review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

I received an ebook ARC from the author. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Cover Story was sweet and emotionally touching. It was easy to root for Dax and AJ to get together!

Dax’s love for his mom, sister, and stepdad was wonderful to see. AJ becoming a part of their family was heartwarming.

The side characters were really fun. I especially loved Sam, Cami, and Hannah.

Dax’s anxiety and AJ’s insecurities were well written.

I felt the different personalities in the entertainment industry were shown accurately, especially in regards to the Whitneys vs the Hannahs and Darios. Whitney’s casual racism and overt ableism were especially frustrating (as they were supposed to be) because I have heard people in the industry say things like that. I appreciate how this book calls them out and challenges them.

Overall, Cover Story was an enjoyable read! I look forward to reading more by Valerie Gomez in future.

This is a sweet and encouraging novel about 2 men in their 30s who unexpectedly fall in love. Dax, an up and coming comedian who’s about his have his big break, and Aj, an art director for a popular magazine where Dax is having a photo shoot. Dax was so sweet with his family it made me smile every time he interacted with his sister. He seemed to care about everyone and love them so much. Even though he had severe trauma from his father and older brother, he obviously still cared about them. While I hated the misunderstandings they had, the ending was worth it. This was an adorable journey with two sweet and wholesome boys with a good sprinkle of mental health advocacy, helping with anxiety/panic attacks, and a message about accepting your partner through thick and thin. Thank you Valerie for the book and everyone should read this when it comes out on the 13th!!

love Cover Story

Loved this, all the emotions, real humans as characters. Funny, hopeful, feel good. Can’t wait to read again as a comfort read.

This was a sweet read. It goes at a bit of a slow pace - not in a bad way, but in a "taking our time to get to know each other way". There's also a lot of focus on mental health, including one character having anxiety and a lot of panic attacks - and I learnt something new from this book! I had no idea getting panic attacks while asleep was a thing! That's terrifying lmao.

The author is a art director for a magazine, so knowing that made everything about AJ's job a lot more interesting. And Dax's family were definitely another highlight of the book, as they were very sweet.

I loved this book. It is a well written, fun read. Dax and his anxiety are very relatable, and AJ’s desire to prove himself really struck a chord with me. Were there times I wanted to bash each of them up against the side of their heads? Of course! But that’s the sign of a great book, when you can really get invested in the characters.
