Sun up, Sun Down: The story of Day and Night by Jacqui Bailey- Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- The Book narrates the story of the sun and its relationship with earth and the moon. The all planets rotate around their axis and also around the sun. Thus causes day and night. In the book, the author follows the sun from morning to evening and explains how sun’s rays travel, photosynthesis by sun’s rays falling on the leaves, how shadows are formed. Next topic is moon. It narrates how the moonlight lights the sky. An experiment of preparing a sundial watch has been given to students and process is explained. The pole is known as a Gnomon while the flat surface of the white sheet is known as a Dial. As the sun travels on the sky, the length and position of the shadow cast on the dial by the gnomon change. The shadow is longest at sunrise & sunset while it is shortest at Solar noon. This is an informative book for children. Coloured illustrations helps the reader to relate to the story. I have read the Hindi language translation of this book.

With thanks to the author, publishers Bloomsbury Publishing PLC and NetGalley, for providing me with a DRC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This book offers a fine introduction for young readers to the science behind how the earth, moon and sun interact with each other to make day and night on Earth. It also goes into some detail on what exactly the Sun is, and on its importance for the survival of all forms of life on Earth.

All of this science, complimented by the engaging and vibrant artwork, is delivered in a way that provides a nice balance between fun and learning. The sundial experiment gives readers a practical way to put some of the theory they have learned to the test, while some science websites are suggested for those that wish to learn more.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this book for any young scientists out there!

A non-fiction book that interrupts its narrative of the day and night to talk about other things to do with the sun and moon and space, such as the orbit of the Earth, sun protection, and so on. It's very basic science, and presented in graphic novel format as well, so remains fully coloured and pictorial and most accessible. I mean, I could have done without the animals attempting to make quips that just get in the way of us learning what we should be learning, but this was a success. A reprint of a 2006 book, it's part of a small set from the same team, and suggests they're all commendable stuff – certainly with nothing to quibble about here this could be just the way to go to engage a young future scientist.

This book has some really morbid illustrations--and on the point of illustrations, they are terrible. The book is informative, but several points that the author makes really annoy me. The author posits there may be alien life, and it's a purple being sitting on a bed that looks just like ours in his pjs. No. Just no.

A nice look at the sun and its relationship with earth and the moon. Simple but well drawn illustrations are great for helping younger children understand the concepts.
