Max, Brad and Maisie Mystery #1
Murder in the String of G
Maisie was an irrepressible burlesque queen of the fifties who was a star in the Cassandra Theater. She was killed in what was initially ruled to be an accidental trip and fall down a spiral staircase. In fact, she knows it was a murder but, why was she killed and why the later cover-up? Unfortunately, however, what can a ghost to do about it? Andso, her shade haunts the theater hoping to find someone to help her.
It turns out to be a long wait. In two thousand and six two young wanta-be actors arrive at the newly restored Cassandra Theater to audition for a play. One is Max, who is bisexual, and the other is his roommate Brad, who is straight. For reasons unknown at first, Maisie finds she can connect with them both and seeks their help in proving she was murdered and who did it. After initial hesitations, the boys agree to help her solve her killing. The book follows the pair as they stumble towards finding answers while dodging a hired gun, a serial killer of young men and, for Brad, Maisie’s tendency to “fondle his rump” at inopportune times.

This was a deliciously quirky book, which I enjoyed very much. Max and Brad are hapless actors who get parts in a play at a revamped theatre which retains more of its past than they bargained for.
Way back in the glory days of the theatre, Maisie, an outrageous burlesque star at the peak of her career falls down the stairs and breaks her neck. The official cause of death is a tragic accident, but we know there was a trip wire across the staircase, and Maisie isn’t about to give up the ghost until she find out who did it.
Meeting Maisie certainly shakes things up for Max and Brad, but not as much as Brad’s new girlfriend who’s a real killer.
I have to admit that my favourite character was Maisie. She’s a real ballsy lady who calls a spade a spade and develops an attachment to her boys that extends beyond the theatre. She’s responsible for some classic moments of comedy and drama and is about as well rounded as a ghost can be. I had great fun with her and am interested to see how she develops in later books. I loved her tendency to get up close and personal with Brad. I like a lady with a refined taste in backsides.
Max and Brad are also endearing characters although neither quite achieve the weight Maisie brings to the story.
I have to admit there were some editing issues that put me off a little and might be a problem to some readers. However, the general flow of the story was strong and helped to sweep me past the flaws.
The story was definitely meaty enough to keep me entertained throughout, with side shoots and two main storylines – Maisie’s past and Brad’s future (if he has one). The boys came across as good guys with a strong friendship and a lot of affection for each other which they’re not afraid to show.
Max, Brad and Daisy won’t be winning any international awards but if you’re looking for a good yarn, with a strong story, complex characters, plenty of action and a smidgeon of humour, this is your book.

This was a great story, though it clearly was not edited. It does contain a bisexual character and one m/m sex scene, but the majority of the relationships within the story are m/f. It's a humorous paranormal murder mystery, very entertaining read.

Murder in the String of G does not fit into any of my preconceived genres. Correction I am going to just go with funny and off the charts entertaining. Okay not really a genre but that is where I am putting this book. Max and Brad are best friends. They are roommates. They work together in a bar/restaurant where they are treated by the owners like family. They are both struggling actors trying to get their big break on Broadway. Max is gay and Brad is very straight. Before I get to the plot of this story, I also have to introduce you to Masie. Masie is an amazing woman who at the height of her career as a star in burlesque was murdered at the Cassandra Theater. A theater that she has haunted since her death. The plot of this first book in this series has Brad and Max going to the Cassandra theater to sign up to audition for a new play. While there they have their first encounter the feisty ghost of the Cassandra theater. Not wanting to reveal herself to the two boys that make her feel alive again until she knows more about them, she settles on not so subtly making her presence known by grabbing Brad’s hind quarters. This sets the stage for the friendship that will develop between Brad, Max and their sidekick Masie as they try to uncover who killed Masie and why. The chemistry in this story is the chemistry of a deep friendship between these three characters. You might be wondering why this book has a heat rating of 3 stars. There are a few secondary characters that we are introduced to who bring up the heat level of this book a notch or two. The pacing of this story is fast, exciting, tense and hilarious as the three friends turn into amateur detectives trying to solve a fifty-year-old murder. This story doesn’t fully end with the conclusion of this first book. As one mystery is solved another mystery begins. There is strong character development in this story with more going on than Masie’s murder investigation putting Max and Brad in danger. The strong bond that these three have set the stage (excuse the pun) for the next books in the Max, Brad, and Maisie Mystery series.
