Kostelanetz continues to impress, retroactively, with this international anthology of prose and visual art that functions as a stubborn manifesto in opposition to words moving in an ordered coherent manner on the page, praising the nonsensical, typographical, trouble-making hubbub that erupted in the middle of pomo’s short pseudo-hegemony with excerpts from pivotal experimental prose of the period, including J.G. Ballard, Raymond Federman, Giles Gordon, and Edwin Morgan, to name the luminaries, alongside a ragbag of unknown and also-rans whose pieces range from the inventive (Kenneth Gangemi), hilarious (Marvin Cohen), surprising (Emmett Williams), to the intolerable (Robert Smithson), embarrassing (Vito Acconci), or plain insane (Dieter Rot). The visual art is often more effective than the prose (the longer excerpts tend to be the most tedious), however, for a thorough overview of the furthest-out fringes of the avant-garde circa 1973, this fabulously designed anthology is worth acquiring.
