This is a young adult/new adult paranormal romance book, with a huge twist though.

Nathan is an angel of death with a new assignment. He is sent to watch over Juliana until her death, helping her with the transition. However, during an incident in the woods, he ends up saving her instead. This changes the course of her life, and goes against all that he stands for.

Juliana looks out for her brother Jared, works in her Grandmothers shop, and is thought of by some as a witch. We first see this during an incident in the woods, but don't find out more about it until later in the story.

Nathaniel becomes more and more embroiled in Jules' life as the story goes on. He even makes himself visible on more than one occasion, saving her on several occasions. He becomes emotionally attached to Jules, but what future is there for them?

Jules is not an ordinary young woman. We find out more about her during the story, especially when she meets Chris, a Native American ghost hunter who allows her to open her mind to her special skills. He shows her how to use these skills to see things and helps her become the woman she is meant to be.

The author has managed to write a story which pulls the reader in very quickly. There are so many different elements within its pages butthey all work well together. I couldn't wait to see how she would pull it off, or if these 2 two were destined to forever be apart. The ending will surprise some, but it is perfect in my opinion. I look forward to seeing what comes next from this author.

With an advance copy of this to review, I'm happy to add this to my "new series to watch" list. What a refreshing and intriguing read this is! Kessler has crafted a book for all ages, not just the YA crowd. Her heroine, Juliana, is quirky and ethereal at the same time and someone you care about almost immediately. Nathan is a very different character and his shadowy and conflicting emotions make for a very interesting contrast to Juliana.

Kessler has created the beginning of a fascinating series that makes you want the next book sooner rather than later. The story has twists and turns that never stop coming. The supporting characters are as interesting and well drawn as her main characters. The story is tightly written and the pacing is excellent. The narrative is strong and the dialogue is believable.

Mostly, though, this is about the characters and getting wrapped up in their emotions and stories. You won't find cookie-cutter characters here. Only realistic, flawed and enticing characters who draw you into their world.

Kessler’s Death Lies Between Us is a paranormal, YA novel in which the lines between this world and the next are slightly blurred.

Her heroine, Juliana is feeling her way through her life, trying to find her way and her place, while battle forces that seem to "have it in" for her. Most young adult and new adult readers will see a lot of themselves in Juliana. Older readers will be able to relate to what she is going through. It’s truly a book for all ages.

Just when you think you have this story figured out, there is another twist and another turn taking Juliana’s recent string of bad days to worse. Her only light of hope being the mysterious new guy in her life. Nathanial has a way of popping up just when he needs her most.

This reader will be waiting impatiently for the next book in the series.

Death Lies Between Us is a beautiful paranormal love story. Kessler has a way with language and paints a vivid picture of the main character’s world- the harsh realities and the intriguing mysteries. The tension builds throughout the entire book and the reader gets to learn about a whole new lifestyle and a whole new supernatural world. DLBU is a fabulous debut novel and I can’t wait to read what comes next in the Angel Falls series!

4.5 Stars!!!

I loved this book and can't wait for the next one in the series. "Death Lies Between Us" is a unique urban fantasy that revolves around Native American mythology. Although it was slow at times, the plot was outstanding and the second half of the book was a real page turner. In fact, I got lost in the story toward the end and stayed up until 3am in the morning reading. When I finished the book, I was stunned to see it was so late past my bedtime...the ending was that good to me.
Nathaniel and Juliana are both kind hearted and I as a reader, love them dearly. They are perfect for each other, except for one major problem...Nathaniel (Nathan) is dead and currently employed as a death angel and Juliana (Jules) is very much alive. When Nathan is sent on assignment, he sees Jules trapped in a white water creek, and instead of letting her die, he saves her life.

Jules, although in denial and struggling with her gifts, has inherited many supernatural abilities from her native American grandmother. While accompanying her rock star brother to a recording moguls estate, her abilities are awakened by the strong spiritual powers locked in the estates property. One of her abilities is ghost whispering and enables her to see Nathan, when others can't. They care deeply for each other, but because of their situation, there is no doubt that they will have many trials ahead of them in future books.

The book has suspense, unexpected twist and a lot of fascinating Indian folk lore. This is not an erotic NA romance, but the age of the characters places it in the NA category. It basically has almost no physical romance, just romantic attraction. It is clean enough for teens to read. I plan to continue reading this series, but I do hope it gets steamier.

But with or without eroticism, the plot is great and the mild cliff-hanger ending prepares the reader for future adventures with Jules, Nathan and the other cast of characters. Oh, I also hope that future books reveal why the young, handsome Indian Shaman, Chris, is so ill-tempered. And maybe he can find love and redemption.

REVIEW:
Death Lies Between Us is a unique New Adult paranormal romance that follows two characters that connect but are separated with the fact one is not alive. I loved the concept behind the plot and the character development was well done, each character was a bit damaged and trying to find their purpose.

Death Lies Between Us follows Nathaniel, the Angel of Death whose next “client” is the very intriguing Juliana. He decides after one incident in the woods to help her, even though it’s against what he stands for as an angel, since he’s not suppose to interfere. She is destined for one thing and that is to die, but Nathanial makes a choice, which changes both of their lives.

Juliana, when the readers first meet her you can see she’s the mature one next to her brother. She is more of a mother to him, making sure he’s eating and watching out for him when even he chooses the wrong path. Their brother sister connection is a wonderful addition to the plot, there are some heart breaking moments between the too and I wished that her brother didn’t treat her so bad near the end. In addition to Jared her brother, we get an idea why Juliana keeps an eye on her brother because of how much her mother works, but she does find a little peace with her grandmother who owns an herbal store.

Nathaniel is a mystery; his character at the beginning was a bit unusual and for me and I couldn’t connect to him as quick as I did with Jules. But I soon started to love his connection with her, I was so curious on how these two could be together if Nathan isn’t suppose to “alive”. I loved the beginning when he helped Jules after a rude ex girlfriend of her brothers just left her in a tough spot. It was interesting to get more into his family background as well, it’s a tragic story and I feel connects him to the loss Jules had in her life. He blames himself for what happen to his family and the readers get to see his emotions open up more just being around her.

In the end there was a mix of paranormal aspects with auras, mythology, spirits and Juliana learning more about herself and her abilities. One of my favorite tidbits in the story was Chris who guides Juliana, he explains a bit more about Nathan and teachers her how to understand the spirits. In the end the readers really get to see her abilities develop. I enjoy when author can have two POVs without it getting confusing, the readers will be able to grasps the emotions of both characters easily from their perspectives. There is a lot of mystery, emotional twist and turns and supernatural elements that surprised me. I’m curious with the ending what with be next for Jules and Nathan, I love there is so much more I want to know and of course see how Jules handles her abilities a bit more.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a Paranormal Romance novel that would be suitable for both Young Adult and New Adult readers. Fans of The Collector by Victoria Scott and Kim Harrisons Hollow series will want to get there hands on Death Lies Between Us by Jody Kessler.

Death Lies Between Us is the debut Young Adult/New Adult Paranormal novel by Jody A. Kessler. This is definitely an author, and a series, to keep an eye on.

Nathaniel's an Angel of Death, his job is to watch over and escort those that are soon to die into the afterlife. But, it's not that easy for him, especially after meeting his next 'client' Juliana. He's immediately drawn to her, which is totally against the rules. Angels of Death aren't allowed to become attached to or interfere in their client's lives.

Juliana is a little bit funky, a little off the beaten path, and a whole lot independent. Jules's is also a protector type, looking after her brother, Jared, and trying to keep him from making the wrong choices that he seems to prefer. This gets Jules's in to some dicey situations and even though Nathaniel isn't supposed to help her, well he breaks those rules which sets other things in motion.

Juliana has a few twists of her own, but if I share those I'll give away some of the larger plot points. Once Juliana and Nathaniel meet physically the story really is set in motion with all the things that go bump, and twist, and turn.

This story was very well paced. The characters were engaging, showed depth, character growth, and a lot of emotions. The conflict was well written, had some good plot twists, and a good amount of information to fill in any questions you might have about the Native American mythology and beliefs.

I really, really enjoyed this first book by Jody A. Kessler. Personally I'd suggest it for anyone that's a fan of Amy Plum's Revenant series or Kelley Armstrong's Darkness Rising series. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!

This is a well-written, wonderful debut novel. The beautifully described Colorado mountain settings, the no-nonsense female protagonist, the strong family bonds, the herb lore, the Native American elements… and the fact that her guardian angel was also an Angel of Death! I mean, how cool is that?

The book begins in Nathan’s point of view, so it’s no surprise that hes an angel, someone who was once alive but is now entrusted with helping souls cross from the land of the living over to the other side.

Although we first see Juliana from his viewpoint, the narration soon shifts back and forth between the two of them, written in dueling first person perspectives, giving the reader a better understanding of both characters, and what’s at stake.

Neither character has a full grasp of the situation, which the author allows to unfold organically, giving the reader information as the characters perceive it. With twists and turns and misunderstandings, Jules and Nathan are inexplicably and undeniably drawn together, with the reader rooting for their relationship to succeed, despite the fact that we know – we know from page one – he’s already dead.

Ms. Kessler does an excellent job of writing believable characters and beautiful scenery. The herb lore she incorporates flows naturally with the story, as does the Native American spirit mythology. The sibling bonds between Juliana and her brother are both believable and heartbreaking, and the author does an excellent job conveying the complexity of their relationship, as well as the relationship between Juliana and her grandmother.

But at its heart, DEATH LIES BETWEEN US is a love story, between two souls who are bound by fate despite the odds against them. I loved everything about the interactions between Jules and Nathan, and hope that there will be more books about them coming soon!

What can I say about this debut novel? Let’s start with first impressions – the cover is absolutely breathtaking. I had to buy this book because I could not take my eyes off the cover. Well done, Jody Kessler.

I instantly liked the heroine, Juliana Crowson, and her brother, Jared. Their close sibling relationship was endearing. Even though Jules had assumed the role of his caretaker – trying to convince him to make good decisions based on his propensity to choose the wrong path – they were still like the best of friends. Nathaniel is the Angel of Death. Now you would think you would be terrified, for the heroine, by the Angel of Death, but not in this story. Nathan is broken — trying to help others cross over into death and understand their fate when he hasn’t quite accepted his own. When he meets his new ‘client’ Juliana, everything changes… for both of them.

Death Lies Between Us is a fascinating paranormal romance that has twists and turns that can’t be predicted. I was on the edge of my seat, flipping pages furiously through most of the book. Jody A. Kessler has created the beginning of a series that keeps you wanting more. The story is tightly woven and flows beautifully from beginning to end. The supporting characters are just as well written as the main characters. There are those you love, those you hate, and some you just can’t quite wrap your head around. This is definitely an author, and a series, to keep your eyes on!

This was the first paranormal NA book I have read. It's the story about a young woman, Jules, and her angel of death, Nathaniel. He is sent to help Jules cross over when it's her time to die. However, he finds it hard to stay objective the more time he spends watching her. He finds himself developing feelings for her. Things get more complicated when Jules begins to actually see him. She has recently developed the ability to see spirits and people who have died. Like Nathaniel, she begins having feelings for him even though she doesn't know his true identity. The story is told from Jules' and Nathaniel's point of view, so you are able to see how each of them feels about each other.

The author has an extraordinary talent in describing the settings in her book. I found myself in the beautiful forest with Jules. I could see and hear the sights and sounds that Jules did. In my opinion, that takes real talent on the part of a writer.

I also enjoyed the development of the supporting characters, especially Jules' grandmother and Chris, a sort of mentor for Jules. She also references a lot of Native American mythology. I found Chris incredibly interesting. I am looking forward to future books that hopefully develop the mentorship between Jules and Chris. There was also a twist at the end as well. I will definitely read the sequel.

Winsome, fresh and lovingly crafted, this novel of life and death, angels and Native American mysticism is completely deserving of its recent award, the 2014 Readers' Crown for Best Paranormal Romance.

I'm reluctant to agree that Death Lies Between Us is genre romance alone, because it incorporates so much of what is normally found in mainstream fiction. The hero and heroine seek to explore the world and not merely their sexual attraction to one another. Jody A. Kessler has built a setting rich in both physical and emotional description, with familial love and friendships also sharing the spotlight, thus enhancing the twined tales of love and loss.

Perhaps what I admire the most, however, is the author's restraint in plotting and how this creates a thoughtful home for the novel's paranormal elements. Each of the characters and their actions are so human and well grounded, that the magic feels like a natural part of life in Kessler's Colorado mountain town.

I loved this tale of two young lovers, one alive and struggling to understand her purpose as a healer, the other an Angel of Death still hurting from the abuse he suffered when he was alive. Bring on the next book in the series, please!

If there is one thing I know about- it is the paranormal as well as the Angel of Death and the afterlife...maybe it is because I am a Native American Indian. My Cherokee Indian ancestry believed in the supernatural world.
Readers, if you want to get swathed in something good - then I suggest you take a chance and read this very interesting novel. It has great dialogue and realistic characters.
Just to let you know - I wrote a true story about a spirit that kept popping up when I needed someone, "Thomas, The Friendly Ghost", and I fully understand why others in this novel didn't notice Nathaniel (who is an Angel of Death) in this intriguing tale, "Death Lies Between Us".
I hope you read this fascinating novel. It is a YA, but I believe readers of all ages will enjoy it.

Not your average paranormal romance!

This unique love story involves a young woman who is just emerging from the cocoon of young-adulthood. She is still young enough to still find zest and excitment in life, but she is old enough to know better than to trust first impressions or even second ones. This engaging mindset traps her in the conflict of wanting to know more, much more, about her "unseen" visitor and a constant struggle of pulling away from him inspite of the fact that he seems to only want what is good for her coming to her rescue time and again. This book has skilled writing, intriguing plot twists, unique concpets and a captivating romance. A great read all the way around.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. ;)

Nathaniel where do I begin to describe him?? Sweet Death.... He is a guide of sorts ushering his charge to the other side. He has a real love hate relationship with his "job".
He has a new "charge" and Juliana is just different in so many ways from the usual people he helps crossover.
Juliana's brother Jared has a band called Mostly Mayhem and wants to make the big time. Jules (Juliana) is certain he can do it.

Jules' time will be up in the near future or Nathan (Nathaniel) wouldn't be there. He knows she is due to crossover sometime soon but doesn't know how or exactly when. What Nathan wasn't ready for was the feelings stirring inside since he looked into Jules' eyes.
He finds it literally impossible to keep himself from interfering with fate each time. But when you interfere in destiny there are consequences. Not just for death hot on Jules' heels but also for Nathan.
A trip with the band to the local legendary haunted castle has Jules tapping into abilities she's been ignoring and getting into more trouble. This damsel in distress has a personal savior.
Will she outrun fate and death or will Nathan do his job and usher her soul to the other side......

The page turning never stopped and my sleepiness and life got in the way of my reading! LOL!
I am definitely recommending this book.
It is a really great read!

*This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest and unbiased review*

(I'm writing this review with flu so if it doesn't make much sense or is too rambling I'll edit it when I'm better!)

I absolutely adored this book. Juliana was a beautifully created character. She was unique but relatable. She made decisions and had trains of thought I could imagine doing myself. Not always clever but nonetheless understandable. The author did a great job of creating the emotional flavour. I felt her anxiety, her love for her brother, her confusion, her apprehension, her fear, and my favourite, the peace she got from being with nature.

I am a born and bred English girl (ok I guess I ought to say woman now!) so my knowledge of experience of Native American Culture amounts to whatever I have gleaned from popular culture. I therefore found the cultural backdrop in this book fascinating. I loved to read about the medicinal plants, and auras, and the rituals to help souls etc. The connection to the outside in this book is beautiful. The landscapes and locations were so well described I could picture them in my mind almost like it was a movie. I think the big spooky castle lends itself very well to this.

The writing style really helped me to connect to Juliana, understand her motivations and her deepest feelings. In 1st person it's important for the character to not know more than they should or always have the ability to take themselves out of the situation to analyse what's going on objectively. We didn't get this here. We went on the ride with her and felt her decisions and why she made them. I also loved that when she was in shock that was evident in her pov which was confused and disjointed. It meant as a reader that I felt her shock symptoms rather than being told about them. I was very impressed with the character. I particularly liked her developing abilities and how she was handling them. I would love to read a whole series of books with her learning to use and accept them whilst helping others/solving mysteries etc. I could read a lot with this main character and this 'world' without getting tired of it, I just loved it.

As for Nathaniel, I am less enthusiastic but still intrigued by him as a character. We hear less from his pov so maybe that's why. I'd like to know more about him, to grow to love him more, and I'm fascinated by his new job so I do hope we hear more of that in a future book.
The side characters were very interesting though. I'm so pleased they weren't two dimensional 'cut & paste' characters. Lance, Jared, Chris, Charlotte - all characters I want to know more about, that I enjoyed reading about, that I care about.

My reason for not going the full 5 stars is related to my feelings on Nathaniel. I am a romance junkie, self-confessed, and I just wanted more! I didn't quite buy why Juliana fell for him and I didn't feel enough time was spent developing any intensity in the relationship. I really love the idea of their relationship though and would be excited to see it develop in future books. I just need to feel the love and passion though.

Great main character and cast of supporting characters, beautifully described settings, fascinating and rich 'world' of abilities, beliefs etc. Thoroughly recommend this book, the next in the series will be an automatic buy for me.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Solid 4, maybe even 4.5 stars for me.

Death Lies Between Us is the debut novel from Jody Kessler. This is the first book in her Angel Falls series. Book two, Angel Dreams, is due out early 2014 according to her website http://jodyakessler.com/?page_id=23.

This story is well written and flows at a steady pace from beginning to end. I did feel as if the dialog was choppy in the beginning, mostly because it felt like all sentences either started or ended with "he said" or "she said" instead of letting the conversation just flow. I think this is the reason I had a hard time getting into the story in the beginning. It took me two or three days to make it to the 20% point. Other than choppy dialog, I'm not sure why. The story was very interesting, even in the beginning. Maybe I was tired with too much going on. Anyway, once I hit the 20% point, the story really took off for me, and I didn't want to put it down.

I really enjoyed watching Nathan fall for Juliana. I felt his frustration and sadness at not being able to live the life he wanted to live and be with the person he wanted to be with. I felt his fear and insecurity with the thought of Juliana finding out who he really was and how that would probably turn her away from him. I loved how Juliana loved her brother and wanted to protect him from himself, however

I really enjoyed the paranormal part of this story. I've been reading mostly temporary lately and found this story very exciting and entertaining. I can't wait to read the rest of the series to see what happens with Nathan and Juliana next as well as how Juliana masters her skills and decides what to do with them. Will she and Nathan start working together to help people? Did Nathan send that blond girl into the store for help??? How will Chris fit in throughout the rest of the series? Ahhh...can't wait to find out!!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review and, I honestly have to say, it is one of those books that just suck you right in.

From the very beginning, I just had to keep reading to find out what was going on. There was mystery after mystery and, just when I thought I'd figured out what the heck was going on, and who was responsible, there was another twist, and I was right back where I'd started. By the time I found out what was going on, I thought, 'Wow. I didn't see that coming.'

There was so many things going on in this book... Drugs, rock 'n roll, psychics, Native American myths, ancient spirits, sacred land, herbal medicine, ghosts, possible witchcraft, death, angels, evil rapists, evil mean girls... you name it... but... it all works! Believe it, or not, it all just... works.

The main topic of the story is the romantic attraction between Nathaniel (Nathan) and Juliana (Jules). Nathaniel just happens to be an angel of death, and Juliana is a... well, I'm not sure what she is, but she can 'sense' things. She can also see beings that humans usually can't, like ghosts, spirits, angels of death.... Essentially, these two are doomed from the start but circumstances being what they are, they find they're actually perfect for the other. They only have to figure out a way to be together while solving all of the stuff that's going on around them. Oh, and since Nathaniel's there to collect her soul in death, there's that problem, too.

Interesting, unique book that gets you thinking, and wondering when the next book is coming out so you can find out what's going to happen to these two! :D

Nathaniel’s job is to escort his clients – a polite euphemism for the newly dead – into the afterlife. His commitment to this path is shaken when he is assigned to Juliana “Jules” Crowson, who startles him with her vibrant personality and striking beauty. When he intervenes instead of allowing her to meet her death as planned, he changes everything.

But Death Lies Between Us is not a story about a blushing beauty of a helpless heroine and her brooding supernatural lover. Jules is a quirky, independent girl with an affinity for nature who slowly discovers her connection to the spirit world. Nathaniel is sweet and wistful, not dark and moody. Rather than being a ‘save the world’ story, the book follows the misadventures of Jules and her brother Jared, who is determined to get himself into trouble and succeeds. The demons and evil in this story are of the mundane sort.

Without spoiling any major points, Nathaniel and Jules slowly get to know each other, but Nathaniel must eventually make a choice that will change both of their fates forever. The romance builds slowly, but by the end you’ll be rooting for them!

Kessler’s writing is delicate and picturesque, especially as she describes the beautiful Colorado mountain setting and the Native American imagery. There are also some great setpieces, particularly the eerie, haunted Castle Hill where much of the story occurs.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series!

Nathan is the harbinger of death. His only mission–to explain to those who have passed that they are dead and comfort them as much as possible. He is a spirit with the job to wait for death to occur, but this time he is unable to accept gracefully the death of the beautiful spirit of Juliana.

Juliana is having an especially bad day. She has been at death's door several times, and the day is young. The mysterious Nathan comes to the rescue and saves her each time. With Nathan, she feels safe and knows with him she would never suffer.

To save one, he risks the wrath of those who police the spirits ushering the living to the other side. In all the years, he has never been tempted to save one. Still, if there is one to risk punishment for, it is the pure spirit of Juliana. But is he preventing death or only delaying?

Death Lies Between Us is a true story of star crossed lovers. There is truly a seemingly insurmountable obstacle between those who would love. I love the sacrifices love requires, and how each character deals with them. Ms. Kessler writes a supremely beautiful story of loving against all odds.

Death Lies Between Us by Jody Kessler is a New Adult novel for ages 18-25 years. Featuring Nathanial, the angel of death, and Jules, a young female human who is destined to die, the two face trouble and turmoil when Nathanial falls in love with the woman he is destined to take to the other side.

Jared, Jules younger brother, falls in with the wrong crowd. A talented musician, he and his group end up ensnared in the teeth of vampires, one of which hankers after Jules. From one misadventure to the next Jules and Nathanial work their way through 'life', trusting in love to guide the way.

An easy read, Ms. Kessler describes a young adult world were drugs, alcohol, and teenage-moving-into-adulthood angst fill the pages. Brisk, insightful, and very romantic, Death Lies Between Us, is well worth reading on a cold, rainy, winter's day.

I for one, will be waiting for Ms. Kessler's next novel.

Kudos to the author.

**I received this book in exchange for an honest review**

This was an interesting book in that is was not the same paranormal book I've read over and over again. The mix of Native American mysticism and angels was new and fresh. Juliana was a strong female lead and Nathaniel was sweet and swoon-worthy.

Although the ages of the main characters fit in the New Adult range, I feel this book would be more accurately placed in the Young Adult category. It was PNR lite.

I loved this story right away from the beginning. I think part of the reason is because I recently started to read more angel books so they are fresh and new for me. But it could also be the author's work. This is a great paranormal romance that is an easy read with lovable characters. I had such difficulty putting this down that I will be purchasing the sequel. Assuming that the written herb/plant information is true, this author certainly did their homework.

Julia has fought knowing who and what she is and just tried to get by and be in the background. Then she meets him. As the world she knows and loves shifts on her Nathaniel shows up. With many a twist and additional characters that keep the action pumping this author writes a great story with a different take on angels. I love all things angels and am always excited with a new series and a new outlook to enjoy and this is most definitely one to enjoy. I started the series out of order and am so glad I stopped to start it right.

Nathaniel Evans is an angel of death who was sent to help Juliana (Jules) Crowson with her death but instead saves her. Jules works at her grandmother’s shop and looks out for her brother Jared. Chris a Native American ghost hunter helps Jules hone in on her special skills of seeing ghosts. Sometimes Nathaniel appears to Jules as he has becomes emotionally attached to Jules and saves her from many accidents. I really enjoyed this fantastic paranormal romance novel.

I loved the combination of Angels and Native American mysticism. As a debut novel I admire the authors scope and ability to create characters the reader gets involved with. Get invested in.
I look forward to see this author grow into the promise she so obviously holds.

*I was given a copy in exchange for my honest opinion.*

When Nathaniel Evans first sees Juliana Crowson, she’s writing in a notebook while a boy that resembles her plays a guitar. Her face is hidden from Nathaniel by her long black hair and eyelashes. The poetry she’s writing in her book give him an ominous feeling, like she may have a death wish. It wouldn’t surprise him. He’s an Angel of Death and he’s there to help her make the transition into the hereafter.

Her time has not come yet, and because he has to be there when it does, he has the only excuse he needs to follow her. It’s in his job description, but he quickly realizes it might be bad for his soul. He was wrong about her death wish. On the contrary, she’s full of life. Within an hour of walking into her life, Nathaniel finds her in three potentially life threatening situations, and with each one, he feels the moment he’s waiting for draw nearer and dreads it. But when people who know Juliana leave her with her foot caught between a log and a rock in an ice-cold creek, Nathaniel can no longer watch. He makes himself visible and flesh enough to free her from her predicament, but fears that his interference may set her up for a death worse that the hypothermia he’s helped her avoid.

Death Lies Between us is a New Adult novel centered on a theme of unintended consequences. Every character in this story does something that impacts other characters, sometimes in undesirable ways, even across time and dimensions. There are moments of innocence, selfishness, cruelty, fear, greed, love, pity, and forgiveness, all of which come from characters one might least expect. This gives the entire cast a very human quality.

Nathaniel is a desirable hero with a tragic past that allows the reader to pity his mortal life and sympathize with his present situation. With two dangerous incidents averted, superstitious Juliana is on her guard and waiting for the third to come and claim her. Once introduced, they are subject to quick, mutual infatuation. The reader can only hope that she avoids the fate that Nathaniel’s presence promises.

Yet, it’s in the love story arc of the story where a latent flaw inherent to any romance with a ghost lies. The only “happily ever after” requires the death of the living partner, and the thought of Juliana’s death was Nathaniel’s conflict. How could he do his job when his instinct was to protect her? Appearing to her is not a huge deal, because the girl has supernatural talents that she is struggling to come to terms with, but manifesting as a touchable person takes a lot of effort for him. Basically, I didn’t feel that Juliana was at risk of dying, but neither did I feel there was hope for a future with Nathaniel. A happily-for-now was possible if she survived the novel, but I found myself hoping for the development of a third scenario that involved Chris, a cranky, 25-going on-70-year-old Native American shaman.

Without giving anything away, I will say I was satisfied.

In her debut novel, Jody Kessler has written a solid paranormal novel that bring together Native American folklore, restless spirits, supernatural gifts, and angels on missions. It is the first of a planned series, and there are a number of loose ends left to be tied. The haunting of Castle Hill, (one of the primary settings of the book), Juliana’s brother’s drug addiction are both realistically still in play, as is an apparent fall from grace for Nathaniel, who seems unable to follow rules where Juliana is concerned.

I would recommend Death Lies Between Us to fans of NA Paranormal Romance, particularly readers who enjoyed Avery Olive’s “A Stiff Kiss” or Toni de Palma’s “The Devil’s Triangle.”

**I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review**

This story is written in split POV’s from both Nathaniel (“Nathan”) and Juliana (“Jules”). The writing style is easy-flowing and timed to keep you invested in the story through to the end.

Seriously – every time I would get comfortable with what was going on, something EPIC would happen and I was back on the edge of my seat.

So Nathan…Ah, Nathan. I loved him so much. Nathan starts out the story and we immediately learn that he is, in fact, dead. He died at a young age (22) but because he is so selfless and pure of heart, he is made to be an Angel of Death – or
a Grim Reaper, if you will.

No, no, no, I know what you are thinking –

Nope, not that kind of grim reaper. He is an angel, sent to earth to help the spirits of the newly deceased move on to whatever lies before them. Although he has been doing this for 20 years, he still feels the pull of loneliness and he feels so terrible for the people that it weighs heavily on him.

Enter Juliana, or “Jules”. She is a 20-yr old native American whose father died when she was 8 and whose mother now works endless hours, rarely giving any time to Jules or her brother, Jarod. Because their parents are not involved in their lives, Jules and Jarod really look out for each other. The sibling bond is strong, playful, and as many sibling relationships can be, sometimes strained.

Jules has a secret. ~She sees dead people~ Lol. Ok, not like that. She is “gifted” and can see memory signatures whenever she happens upon a place that was the scene of a tramatic event. At least, that’s all she sees to start with… Jules can also sense when something bad is going to happen. On this day, she senses that maybe something bad is going to happen to her.

Nathan is sent to his next “client”, but this one is different from the others. She can see him.

Ahhhhh! I’m getting goosebumps again just writing this. He is so good and tries to do the right thing by letting her life follow its natural course, but she is different and he feels such a pull to save her from the early demise that he knows is coming, he just doesn’t know when or how she will die.

Jules is my favorite type of character. She doesn’t need a guy ~ who does ~ and wasn’t looking for anything other than friendship from Nathan when she met him. The relationship between them builds naturally and almost painfully. He knows he can never be with her, and she is not looking for a relationship, but as happens in real life, sometimes you can’t choose who you fall in love with.

Although I believe this book is coined as a paranormal fantasy genre – which it does have – I would easily put it in with romance or mild thrillers (for the incredible memory signature scenes that she sees). Really loved this book! I would recommend it to anyone that likes the mythical aspects of the native American culture or something paranormal that doesn’t include vampires. 

As a small warning for under-age readers, there are some drug-, alcohol- and violence-related scenes in this book.
**although even they are well done and depicted as a sad tragedy and a waste of life**
