Devastation sweeps across the land, and the families of Maple Grove cannot escape when war arrives at their front doors.
After her father entrusts her with a new and dangerous task, Sally Chandler must find the courage to obey despite her fear. Meanwhile, her best friend, Claire Harper, is determined to serve others, even if it means putting herself in danger. But with a certain handsome Union soldier stationed nearby, Claire finds her heart in danger of falling for the enemy. Their differing loyalties create complications that neither could expect; her twin brother fighting for the Confederacy is only one of them.
Frank Harper left home with one goal in mind – to become a prosperous plantation owner. Two years later, not only is he further from his goal, but he's beginning to question his own desires--something that becomes more complicated when his heart becomes involved.
The families of Maple Grove must learn how to survive the uncertainty of war and a country split in two. While the war in the nation rages on, the battle within grows stronger. Will they learn that the only safe place to hide is in the shadow of Thy Wings?

Thank you to the author, A.M. Heath for gifting me with a copy of In the Shadow of Thy Wings in exchange for an honest review!
This book took me on a roller coaster of emotions! One moment, everything is fine and the next, everything is falling apart! Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the Civil War time period and people's lives as they lived through a period of war that split the nation. Claire and Sally were my favorite two characters by far in this book! Their dialogue is quite wonderful to read! I also, of course, love reading from the contrasting perspectives of Frank and Ralph.
In this installment, we find out more about the Chandler family and so many things start to make sense that were hinted at in the first book. I don't want to spoil anything so I'll speak of this rather briefly and vaguely. What is revealed about the family changes the name of the game and makes you see things in an entirely different light. It also brings to the table the difficulties of dealing with shifting loyalties and the dangers of living in the South during this time period when you disapprove of certain things.
Let's move onto a different topic shall we? This is another point that I'll have to be vague about so I don't spoil anything. Be prepared to have your heart ripped out and stomped on by a dozen horse's hooves. A major event takes place in the middle of the book and like the previous plot point I was talking about in the above paragraph, this changes the name of the game! It messes with the one thing that's a constant in stories (that is, until recently, apparently). While I'm incredibly sad and angry that it happened, the event also then makes it possible to allow us to see the healing process and the melancholy that's left as the characters move on. I can also appreciate the way those scenes were written. They had the perfect amount of each character's POV (with distinct voices ranging across the spectrum).
That all being said, I really liked how the book was structured as well as how the author chose to end it. War is a dangerous time and the author didn't sugarcoat anything. Bad things happen in war, tragic things, and we are allowed a glimpse into that life with this book.
One last thing: this book does contain a significant amount of religious content (Christian based). It wasn't very over-powering, as strange as that may sound. The author made it work with the time period and the situations and the Bible quotes that were used added a lot to the storyline.
Quite honestly, I can't wait to read the next book and see what becomes of the characters!
The Final Verdict: A heart-wrenching book that displays the reality of war - both on the front lines and at home. It was a roller coaster of emotions that carried me from joyousness to grief in a matter of one or two pages. The structuring is spot on and the POV's are perfectly placed. 4.5 stars
Quotes: "Her laughter drew the attention of those around them as Frank spun her around. Setting her down, her laughter trailed away, but she had yet to release him completely. 'Share the wealth, Harper,' Jared Smith shouted from somewhere behind him. Letting go of her, Frank turned to Jared and spread his arms open wide, offering him a hug that he knew the man didn't want. Everyone roared with laughter when Jared snarled his nose up and shook his head. 'I'll take the prettier twin if you don't mind.' 'Easy,' Frank warned with a pointed finger and a purposeful glare."
Not being a romantic enthusiast, I started not caring for book 2 as much as book 1. I realize that this was because there was more romance, infatuation, and falling in love than I personally prefer (I would have rathered hear more about the Underground Railway activity), but I don't hold that against the author nor do I think it dampens the story for the reader (unless you're like me, in which you now know what to expect ;)).
However, as the story progressed and details of the war rolled in, I found myself drawn in again. I found myself cheering at every small detail of history that was included--such as coffee made from whatever possible. I can repeat many of my sentiments for the first book with appreciation for the research, the believable and enjoyable characters, the gripping plot, and the unashamed use of Scripture.
I enjoyed following the Harpers and Chandlers and Ralph, even though there were some events in this story that I saw coming and didn't really want to read. I won't give spoilers, but as much as I disliked seeing another favorite character "killed off" in the story, I'm grateful Mrs. Heath stuck to the reality of history at the time.
Younger readers may want to know that, as in the first book, this is a war story and does describe battle scenes, blood, and agony. As for the romance, which I've already mentioned, there is kissing, hugging, falling in love, etc., but nothing more intimate described.
And finally, some quotes: "I do trust them but..." she started before Andy cut her off. "Seems to me that either you's be trusten or ya ain't. The thing is, trust never says 'but.'”
"To be courageous is not to be absent of fear, but rather to be obedient in spite of it.”
This eloquent sequel continues the story of the Harper and Chandler families, two southern households with young men fighting in the Civil War and young women who have stayed behind, yet are intricately involved in the war effort. A.M. Heath brings us readers along with her well-rounded characters as they struggle not only with their flesh-and-blood enemies, but also with their consciences, with the Scriptures, and with family relationships and friendships as the Civil War commences on it blood-soaked final leg.
As a Christian reader, I particularly appreciate the way this author puts the relationship of her characters with the Lord Jesus at the center - and does it in a natural, easy-as-breathing manner. This is not a "preachy" book - and yet the Gospel pulses from its every page. And this is no weak-kneed, warm-and-fuzzy Gospel; it is the strong, muscular kind that lives and fights and sees clearly that our battle is not against the things that are seen. You may not always agree with the choices her characters make, but A.M. will make you think hard - will force you to search your heart - about why you disagree. This sort of fiction encourages and exhorts and urges us to live a more holy life, while at the same time drawing us irresistibly into the story-world of 1860s Maple Grove, with all its intrigue, danger, and sweetly sacrificial love.
*I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review. No other compensation was received, and I was under no obligation to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
Wow! What an amazing read! A.M.Heath pulled out all the stops in this sequel to her first book "Where Can I Flee". All the familiar characters are in this latest book along with a few surprise characters.
As in the first book. the reader is treated to letters exchanged between Frank Harper and his twin sister, Claire
Even though the Civil War was a very dark time period in our nation's history, A.M.Heath does not focus exclusively on the evil and depravity of that time.
The main verse recited throughout is: “Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in Thee: yea, in the shadow of Thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.” Psalm 57: 1 – KJV
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review. I was not required to give a positive review and all thoughts are my own.
The second book in the Ancient Words Series does not disappoint. Life continues for the Chandlers and the Harpers as the Civil war drags on. The war brings constant dilemmas for these families. Frank becomes the focal character as he grows in his new faith and finds challenges to his moral viewpoints. Ralph, Claire's love interest and Union soldier, takes on a bigger role, too. Surprises meet the reader throughout!
I enjoyed learning more about what it was like to live during this time of American history. The hardships took their toll on both sides. The author creates a vivid insight into the decisions and choices those of faith had to make.
I highly recommend In the Shadow of Thy Wings by A. M. Heath!
I was graciously given a copy of this book by the author and I have given my honest review.
This is the second book in the series, but let me say it was just as great as the first one. "In the Shadow of Thy Wings" kept me reading way into the night. From the very first chapter I was hooked! I loved Claire's personality. She was fascinating to read about even when she was sick. Of course I loved the other people in the book also but I guess she was my favorite. She felt like she could take on the whole world and showed such courage when something terrible was about to happen to her. If you like to read Historical Christian Fiction don't miss this one! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review. I was not required to give a positive review and all thoughts are my own.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review. I was not required to give a positive review and all thoughts are my own. I was extremely excited to have an advance copy of this book to edit and review. After reading the first book in the series, "Where Can I Flee," I was anxious to find out what the characters would go through next. I was sad to finish the book and realize I would have to wait a whole year for the next one! I would highly recommend the whole series to anyone who enjoys historical and/or Christian fiction. Update: I read this book again with my 14 year old daughter, who is a Civil War buff like I am. She loved it just as much as I did!
After reading the first book in this series, I was a little apprehensive about what this second book would contain. I enjoyed the first book; the pace just seemed a little slow to me and I found it difficult to get into the story, even though I enjoyed getting to know the different characters. Everything felt different when I started this story, though. It felt like the writing style improved, and I was gripped from nearly the first page. Instead of choppy, somewhat stilted scenes, these flowed, and I couldn’t wait to read on to see what would happen next!
There are so many characters to love here. I think I related the most to Sally; we both tend to have cautious, shy, and somewhat fearful personalities. Claire was so sweet and caring. Frank’s journey reminded me of some of the lessons the Lord has brought me through over the years, and Ralph was the kind of faithful, trustworthy hero everyone loves reading about.
As far as history is concerned, it was interesting to see the Civil War from the perspective of one particular regiment and what happened to it. I feel like books often include little bits of the whole story, but rarely do you see an event in history start to finish like this. Some reviewers have pointed out that this series may not give the full picture of why the war was fought, and I agree. The main reason given in these stories for individuals’ involvement in the war was the slavery issue, but there were other issues that played into it, too. If you’re looking for a fully factual account of the different perspectives and reasons for the war, this isn’t a series for you. However, if you like a good overview of history along with a gripping, encouraging story, this could be the perfect option for you! I certainly enjoyed all the historical tidbits included along the way.
Delightful characters, an engaging plot, and some sweet romance all play together to make this book a good read. There are heavier parts to the story—at one place, I almost had to stop reading for a while because I was crying too much to continue (and I never cry!)—but there are also some hilarious parts that bring some much-needed levity to the plot. Overall, I enjoyed this read, and can’t wait to dive into book three!
I was given a review copy of this book, and this is my honest opinion of it.
Powerful, realistic plot and true to life characters that I connected with. A box of tissues was needed with the despair and losses the soldiers and their families experienced. I was caught up in all the action, conversations and major events that were well researched for this astonishing Civil War book.
To be honest, I'm seriously conflicted on how to rate this book. For most of the first half, I would have rated it about three stars--nothing really jumped out at me, good or bad. Then...something...happened that left me so shocked and devastated that I almost didn't finish, and I was determined that I wouldn't rate it any more than three stars, no matter how good the rest of the book was. But then by the end, it was pulling on my emotions again in a good way, so that I kind of feel like bumping it up at least a half star--except when I look back at that one part... So, yeah, like I said, conflicted. :S
As far as overall, general impressions, I really appreciate all the historical detail that went into this book and am always amazed at the depth of the author's notes on what was historical vs. what was altered/invented. The amount of research that went into everything from troop movements to prison camps is seriously impressive. That said, the dialogue isn't always consistent with the period, and a sprinkling of more modern-sounding phrases or constructions did tend to pull me out of the story at times.
In regard to the moral conflict, it was interesting to see the viewpoint of certain characters either changing or revealing things that we hadn't previously known about them. One person especially, I had to go back and try to remember and rethink a bunch of his previous actions--very well done! And Frank's struggle with what he was learning and what he didn't want to be true felt very realistic and relatable. But I have to admit, I did feel at times like the conflict was a bit one-sided. Let me be very clear--I am NOT saying that there should have been more arguments from the pro-SLAVERY side. Not at all. But the fact that everyone who sided against slavery ended up being/becoming pro-Union felt like a bit of a distortion of all the complex motivations and loyalties that made up the war. I know there were a lot of good people in the South who were against slavery but supported the Confederacy for a number of other reasons (General Lee being a prime example). So while Frank's struggle with his own motivations and his changing heart felt absolutely realistic, and I could imagine that real people probably had this exact experience, having absolutely everyone who disapproved of slavery be secretly pro-Union did strike me as a bit off. Though I would have loved a bit more of the Underground Railroad parts!
In regard to...the thing...that absolutely devastated me... It's absolutely a personal issue that books that make me cry like this rarely receive high ratings from me. I also think part of it was that I was prepared for...things...to happen to certain people (like in the last book), but this one hit me out of the blue and from a quarter where I least expected it. But I will say that the fact that it happened near the middle of the book and not closer to the end did help as far as giving me time to process and get over my grief. And the characters' grief in relation to the event was very well handled, even if it did rip my heart to shreds. :'(
Finally, I have to say, I've done a lot of reading and studying on the Civil War, but this book brought portions of it to life for me in a way that nothing else ever has. Things like the conditions of prison camps, the miserable state of the Confederate army, the shortages caused by the blockade--all of them went from words on a page to something I could just about physically touch. Excellent, excellent work! And the emotions of certain characters as they were dealing with different situations tugged on my heartstrings in a very good way. :) Ralph's struggle, Frank's guilt, Sally's loving support--they were all done so, so well.
I think in the final analysis, I'm going to bump my rating up a bit just because of the beautiful way everything was handled in the end. Still doesn't mean I like the way everything went down, but the fact that it overcame my wanting to throw the book and left me on a good and hopeful note says a lot. ;)
3.5 stars
Content--mentions of war and battle scenes (not graphic); mentions of deaths; mentions of wounds, blood, and vomiting; mentions of awful conditions in army camps and prisons; mentions of men eyeing and making suggestive comments about women; a woman is dragged into the woods by a man who intends to assault her, but he is stopped; mentions of women being raped (no details) and other atrocities committed by soldiers; fights and beatings; a young couple meets in secret (corrected); some kissing and touching; mentions of a married couple sharing a bed (no intimacy); mention of a man needing to keep his thoughts from a woman changing her clothes
Wow is the first thing I think of when I think about "In The Shadow Of His Wings" by A. M. Heath. I usually saved the rating till the end of my review but I am giving this book five stars and I would give it ten if I could. Yes it is that good! This book is about Civil War and the Underground Railroad. It is based on history and interwoven with Biblical scriptures. I really love how A. M. Heath took history and combined Bible scriptures and added fiction to make a great story, that any reader that likes to read a clean love story and /or a Christian fiction and or Historical fiction can enjoy. This book is full of heartaches and sorrows as well as forgiveness and love and friendships. It literally made me cry during a few of the scenes. I really think this and the first book in this series ( Ancient Words ) "Where Can I Flee" would make a great movie, I think it would be as good as the movie "Gone With The Wind".
I think any reader would enjoy reading this novel without reading the first book, but I encourage you to read "Where Can I Flee" first to get the full benefit of the series. " In The Shadow Of His Wings" picks up where "Where Can I Flee" leaves off.
I literally woke up in the morning wanting to read this book and literally fell asleep at night reading it!
There are surprises all through the story.
My Facebook posts were actually quotes from this book while reading it. I am going to include one such post now, "The way I see it,fear is a healthy thing. When you're scared, you're more likely to remember the One that holds you together. You remember the One that gives you courage. The One that guides you in the dark : that hides you behind the shadow of His wings. When a person is scared he doesn't have to be reminded to pray or to be careful, but, you see , a cocky person , one who is comfortable, isn't careful and he isn't mindful of the Lord ,either."
I am glad to say there is going to be a third book in this series. I am anxiously awaiting it.
I was given a copy of " In the Shadow Of His Wings" from Celebrate Lit and the author for an honest review.
WOW! This book was absoutely amazing! From start to finish I was completely consumed by this book and if it weren't for my three little ones I would have probably pulled an all day/nighter just so that I never had to put it down! But alas, I had to take my time with this book! The author A.M. Heath really has a way with words. She has a wonderful God given ability to weave the words together to make you feel such intense and real feelings. I love how she seemlessly blends fiction and non-fiction together to tell such a wonderful story. She has done her homework on the Civil War period and she really makes sure that her characters fit this time period to the "T". I also love that she includes some authors notes that explain where she may have adapted some information or actually explained in more detail about certain things that were happening during the Civil War. This novel is of course book two of the Ancient World Series and it takes us through the culmination of the Civil War and how each of the main characters deals with such a thing. This book much like her first will take you through every emotion that is known to man! You will find yourself laughing, crying, angry, heartbroken, and everything in between. If you are anything like me there is one major event in this story that will have you almost screaming at the pages, no, no, no, but alas the answer is yes. It will make your jaw drop and leave you in tears but it is so beautiful at the same time. I will not say more as I intend this to be a spoiler free review! Just like the book before it, In the Shadow of Thy Wings (Ancient World Series #2) leaves you wanting more! A.M. Heath is an amazing writer with an amazing God given talent. I would recommend this book to everyone because it has been a really long time sense I have come across books as well written and attention capturing as these have been. Even if you are not sure that you would like a Civil War era book or a book written by a Christian author I recommend that you give it a try because I truely believe that you will be plesantly suprised.
I was given a copy of this book by the autor in exchange for my honest review.
I wish in this case I could give three and a half stars, I rounded up instead of down in this case. The story is the continuation of the first book in the Ancient Words series and follows the life of Claire and Frank Harper and their close friends, the Chandlers.
If it is true that the middle book is the most difficult to pin down as far as plot, this novel is no exception. I had difficulty pinpointing a plot arc in the first book and this one is quite possibly even more ambiguous. It is quite literally as if the reader is dropped in the middle of the lives of two ordinary families.
This book is labeled as a Historical Christian Romance, it isn't. While there are portions of romance which are sweet, if you pick up this book hoping for the happily ever after that is required for romance...well you will get a taste of it but the book is more historical fiction, documenting feelings of the period of the civil war than that of lovers.
If you are looking for a novel that relates normal life in all it's sometimes harsh and occasionally sweet (especially during a horrific war), I highly recommend it. If you are looking for a lighthearted romance, this might be more than you bargained for.
I received this book free for an honest review, it in no way guarantees the review will be positive.
WOW!!! I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster while reading In The Shadow of thy Winds. Anita is such a great author, she made the characters in the Civil war seem real and made me feel like I was there and was able to see parts of the war. All through the book I felt all their emotions, the good and bad and how each character handled the situation they were in. At one time I caught myself praying for a character then I realized what I was doing and got tickled at myself and ask God to forgive me.
The best part of the book was how Anita had her characters speak of God and His Son Jesus. I felt closer to God after I read it, She done a wonderful job and it wasn't preachy at all. Made me think about my Christian life and how I could be better.
Be sure to read Where Can I Flee before reading In the Shadow of thy Wings.
What I didn't like... It ended and have to wait for the third book.
I was given this book by the author to read and give a review. This review was my honest opinion of the book.
"In the Shadow of Thy Wings" by A.M. Heath is the second book in the Ancient Words Series. It picks up where "Where Can I Flee" ends and should be read in order. This book follows Frank Harper, Sally Chandler, Claire Harper, Olen Harper, and Ralph Williams. There are some letters between the characters, but not as many as are included in the first book. The romance that I wished for in the first book was finally brought out in this book. I enjoyed watching the romance blossom and grow. The Harpers and Chandlers feel like friends, so I wept with them and rejoiced with them in turn. There were several unexpected twists that I did not expect.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series to find out how Frank Harper, George Chandler, and Ralph Williams fare after the war is ended.
I received a free copy of this book in order to review it. I got no other compensation and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
As you start the second book in the series, In The Shadow of My Wings , the author continues the story of Claire and Frank. We find a spiritual growth in the family and a secret that their dad reveals. Will this secret divide the family? The details of the Underground Railroad fascinated me and kept me emerresed in the gripping story. This is one series that has found me wanting to know more about this particular time in history. What an amazing story that makes your heart break at some of the impossible surroundings the characters had to endure. Overall I give this outstanding series an enthusiastic five stars. Thank you for writing a masterfully written saga that reminds us of a battle that took many lives and the effects it at on the nation.
I received a copy of this book from A. M. Heath and Celebrate Lit for an honest review.
The second installment in the Ancient Words Series was a wonderful read. I enjoyed continuing on this journey with Claire and Frank and their friends and family, following along through the perils of war time, the relationship struggles, the dangerous situations the characters sometimes found themselves in, and their reliance on God to get them through it all. I loved the sweet romantic moments, too. This book had me biting my nails, smiling, getting angry, laughing, crying. I'm so invested in these characters now, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series to see how things turn out.
* I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review, which I have given.
“In the Shadow of Thy Wings" by A.M. Heath is the second book in the Ancient Words Series. The story is set in the Civil War era. If you enjoy reading Historical Christian Fiction than this one is for you. I love It when a books picks up where the lasted book left off, “Where Can I Flee." My suggestion would be to read these books in order.
I look forward to the next book in this series. Love that there were some unexpected twists and turns, that you didn’t see coming.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review. I was not required to give a positive review and all thoughts are of my own.
This 2nd installment of The Ancient Words series picks up right where Book 1 left off, further developing all the main characters and their relationships in spite of the terrible effects of the Civil War on all. The fact that their faith in God kept them going whether it was faith newly found or faith strengthened over a lifetime helped the book maintain an overall uplifting tone even in the devastating wartime setting. The author's very generous use of scripture, obviously selected & placed after much prayer, really spoke to me & blessed me from cover to cover. I can't wait for Book 3 and give this book my highest recommendation. This series is best appreciated if read in order.
I loved this book! It is a wonderfully written book and held my attention every page. I love Christian books that help you to grow as a Christian. I was totally expecting to just read an enjoyable book but God decided to teach me some lessons along the way. I laughed, cried, and found myself praying for these characters. I had to keep telling myself - It is just a book! Yes but it is a book that has changed my life for the good.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a clean Christian book that has romance, drama, and God's word.
This was the second book in the Ancient Word Series. This is a very happy book and a very sad book. I laughed and cried. We get to know more about Claire, Ralph, Sally and Frank. This recreates the second half of the civil war. I look forward to the 3rd book that will go into what happens after the war is over. I received this ebook from Celebrate Lit for a fair and honest opinion.
I absolutely haaaaate A.M. Heath! She forced me to stay up all night reading this can't-put-down book! And a good part of the night was spent in great, gut-wrenching bawling when she killed my favorite character. Whhhhhhy!?! I'm not over it yet. I am relying on book 3 for the answers I need. Starting as soon as I grab a power nap, I'm so thankful the whole series is available and I don't have to wait a year for book 3! These books must be read in sequence to get the proper story.
An Excellent second book in the trilogy. Some shocking developments in this book where I have never seen in a story. Excellent picture of the war from the people left at home. A very Godly story of how God is with you in all circumstances.
In The Shadow of Thy Wings is filled with many of the characters that we first met in Heath's debut novel Where Can I Flee? Claire, Frank, Sally, Ralph and of course Olen all have strong roles in this novel. Each character experiences changes in their lives whether it be with faith, love, life in general, or brought on by the war. The characters are complex and leap off the page.
This book follows the characters to the completion of the war and the joys and trials that they each see. I loved experiencing this bit of Civil War history alongside of these characters. Some bits are told through the story of the characters and other moments come through in the letters that they write to one another. So if you enjoy stories told through written letters, this is probably a series you would be interested in.
One of the most obvious ways that this novel shines is in the history presented through it's pages. Being a Civil War novel, we definitely see the progression of the war. But there is also some history in the pages that I was never aware of. The Underground Railroad operated in some states even after the Emancipation Proclamation. One of the main characters of this story finds herself immersed in this. But beyond that, In The Shadow of Thy Wings does a wonderful job of capturing the everyday life in Tennessee while the war is being waged all around. A.M. Heath laces Biblical truths throughout the pages creating a story that feeds the soul while offering a wonderful tale to read.
**I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.**
“Where Can I Flee” is the first book by A.M. Heath and should be read first in order to truly understand and appreciate this book. Even though the Civil War Era is not one of my favorite time period for a romance novel, this book is fantastic in picturing that Era and accurately portraying the attitudes and fears of the people that lived during that time.
What I liked: The characters had a genuine love and close relationship with God which they portrayed throughout the book. They also had a love for each other, especially Claire who was my favorite character. You can’t help but connect with the emotional struggles of the characters and rejoice with them when things go well.
What I didn’t like: The detailed and tragic events that devastated many families during this war is something I don’t enjoy reading about. Although the facts of the story probably truly happened in the history of the Civil War, reading about people in pain during any time period tends to keep me up at night.
Over all, I give this book four stars. It is excellently written, and the author did a fantastic job with her research of that time period. It’s not one of my favorite types of books to read, but I certainly recommend it to anyone loving a good romance and a historical novel accurately depicting the Civil War time period.
I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review. My opinions and thoughts are entirely my own and were not influenced by the author.
In the Shadow of Thy Wings centers around the Maple Grove neighborhood during the war, and those facing horrific and difficult situations. Claire harper is determined to help those who are injured in the war, which puts her in the path of a certain Union Soldier, and in a dangerous situation. Frank Harper never dreamed that two years after he enlisted, he would still be fighting in the war, but there seems to be no end. This book took a few interesting twists and turns that made the story more entertaining and mysterious, and I couldn’t put it down! Again, the characters in In The Shadow of Thy Wings were well developed, likeable and believable. This is a series that I want to read again, just to see if I missed anything the first time. I highly recommend In The Shadow of Thy Wings, and I can’t wait for book three in this series. I encourage you to check this book out today!
I received this book from Celebration Tours to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55.
In the Shadow of Thy Wings is book two of the Ancient World Series and is as well written and thought-provoking as the first book, Where Can I Flee, was.
The saga of the Civil War picks up where book one ends, and we are again privy to the letters written by Claire and Frank.
Frank is beginning to question his “enthusiasm” for preserving the Southern way of life, and Claire is beginning to fall in love. Each of the twins is immersed in the horrific dilemmas many faced during this trying time in our country. The battles and the “fight” on the home front are richly illustrated, leaving you breathless at times.
As you read, you learn more and more about Frank and Claire, their father and their friends and come to care about them as if you personally knew them.
Heath has interwoven a story of faith and redemption in book two, also.
If you are an aficionado of the Civil War era and historical fiction, you will want to read both of these books. Even though the stories are labelled historical romances, the romance is secondary to the magnificent retelling of this turbulent time in our history.
Have you ever had a book that was just calling out to you to read? In The Shadow Of Thy Wings was that book for me. When I received my copy I started reading and then I had to put it down, but Claire, Frank, Sally, Ralph, George and others kept calling to me. They were begging me to complete this leg of the journey with them and find out how their faith in Christ sustains them through all the twist and turns of life. I love a book that makes me examine my relationship with the Lord and makes me want to grow closer to Him. This story personifies Psalms 23:4, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me".
Sally said "Fear is a powerful master", but as you read this you will realize that fear can't stand up against the Lightbearer (Christ). Take the Lightbearer wherever you go and He will cast out fear.
