I tried this as a recommendation during my Comixology free trial,* so I had no expectations. The art is good and it mostly avoids the chain mail bikini pitfall of a sword swinging heroine. The story is a little mixed up, but not so much that it can't be saved and i will read volume 2 to see if more detail straightens things out.
So far, I'm disappointed in Comixology - I have Kindle unlimited and I feel like there is enough crossover that actually paying for Comixology would be a poor investment.
I picked this up on an absolute whim, not knowing what to expect. After reading it, i have mixed feelings.
I really loved the art style in some places, but not in others. The backgrounds where stunning, especially when we're in nature. The way the characters where drawn, however wasn't really my thing. It's hard to put into words what was "wrong" with them, but the way people were drawn didn't work for me. This however is all very subjective, your mileage may very.
One thing that was very well-done is the use of color. There are a few times where two scenes would happen simultaniously and the narrative would jump back and forth. This could get very jarring very easily, but not here. The illustrator chose to depict one of the scenes in warm tones and the other in cold tones, making them visually look very different so that the reader is never lost.
The plot itself in this book was fine. As can be the case in comic series, this first installment was mostly setup for what comes next. It leaves possibilities for some very interesting things to come and i'm curious how the story will progress.
A great fantasy translation from the original French. Awesome that the creative team are a husband and wife too. The story volume 1 is a excellent tale of revenge and coming of age. The writers give a nice middle finger to virginal tropes that fantasy carries and critique stereotypes of "warriors" which is great to see. It's also beautiful. The art is perfect for a French graphic novel and consumes you in a world of adventure.
[I read the English translation] This is the first in a series so certain plot elements haven't moved forward much, so it remains to be seen whether or not they will pan out favorably. The art is pretty good, at standard for European comics, I'd say. I'm interested enough to keep on reading...Marie has a bit of a Joan of Arc vibe going on. I wonder if that will come into play at all with all this alternate reality stuff being hinted at...
Great art. The story is a little convoluted but I am hoping than with more background the plot will improve in the second book. As it is I would give this 3.5 stars.
