Here are the ingredients that went into making SICKENED:
Danny, a lazy parking garage attendant who still lives with his Nana and has developed a nasty case of crotch rot after a one night stand gone bad.
Nana, an old woman who likes Mary Tyler Moore, knitting, and cooking. After a bizarre mugging, she wakes up with a nasty headache and Mike Tyson's temper.
Teddy (aka Teddy Foreskin) Danny's best friend, he isn't the brightest bulb and he isn't very brave. But he does know all of the lyrics to My Humps by the Black Eyed Peas.
Fergie, A young lady who enjoys a nice cold alcoholic beverage and friendly banter about shit stains in the toilet bowl.
Take these ingredients and mix together with a healthy portion of violence, graphic sex, and humor that pushes the envelope further than it was probably meant to be pushed. Add one final dash of zombies and you get SICKENED, the very first book in The Filthy Apocalypse Series.
This book was a fun read. I was looking for something in the zombie-lore that seems to be all the rage these days in film and books and I happened to stumble across this book. Just so you are aware, this book is not ground breaking by any stretch of the imagination, at least when it comes to zombies. So, if you are looking for a new and fresh take on the theme of a zombie apocalypse, you may be disappointed. In fact reading 'Sickened', reminded me of the film 'Shaun of the Dead' starring Simon Pegg. Anyway, when I made the purchase, I was not aware that it would be very short. In fact, I completed the kindle edition in just a few hours. The writing is nothing stellar, but it does deliver, in terms of a quick pace that keeps you interested. My only complaint is that the story escalates rather quickly. One moment, the protagonist, Danny, is having sex with some strange woman and then within a few pages, the zombie apocalypse has begun. There is not much by way of character build up in this first book of the 'Filthy Apocalypse Series'. Which brings me to the supposed explicit nature of the sex and violence in the book. Given what I had read of the book's blurb I was expecting something really foul. However, it was not bad. The explicit sex that takes place right at the onset of the story, is made more realistic by the use of crass language. And the description of zombies tearing a person limb from limb, was quite vivid. However, I think it was necessary to paint the shocking and horrifying scenario that would ensue as a result of a zombie apocalypse. Keep them coming Dick Gear. I like your stuff so far.
I loved it. Everything in it is just spot on. The humorous dialogue is very well written and stands out when compared to similar reads and the characters work well.
It is a very original take on what is an often used theme (zombies).
