The book was a mandatory accompaniment to the Personal Counselling course (over 16 sessions) that Father Fuster used to conduct for laypersons. It is very methodical in its outline and builds the entire personal counselling curriculum chapter by chapter. The method is essentially the Carkhuff method of counselling based on the counselling approach of Carl Rogers. Fr Fuster was a direct disciple of Carkhuff who in turn was a disciple of Carl Rogers. It is essentially the humanistic psychology applied.
The focus is on developing the necessary skills and attitudes in the counsellor and then apply using a very elaborate process that father called human technology. There are caselets used to demonstrate application of each skill. Towards the end the counsellor’s being and effectiveness is also addressed including his/her purpose. A small book, it is very potent. Father’s course itself was life transforming for many who attended it.
This was my text book for a course in Counselling that I completed recently. A wonderful book. Well written . The author being a Jesuit Priest does refer to his religion in some places but the message is universal and anyone irrespective of their faith will benefit from the book.
The book explains the skills, attitudes and responsibilities of a counselling using the Robert Carkhuff model. The model is elegant and powerful abs can be applied widely .
This is one of the greatest counselling books that I have ever read. I was very young when I read it. It's truly very life transforming book as well as can benefit someone aspiring to counsel others. Most importantly, this book can benefit the reader's life to a great extent.
Text book for Personal Counselling in Carkhuff model of non-directive counselling. Comprehensive, concise, structured, very effective textbook. The author being a Jesuit Priest does refer to his religion in some places but then, every author will have a belief system. This book serves its purpose & takes the student through the Carkhuff model systematically. It is designed to be a “taught” book & won’t carry much value without practical sessions.
