I spent most of my youth in rural Ohio and began writing stories at an early age. Many of these early attempts at story-telling were inspired by mysteries, such as those found in the old Hardy Boys books and the cartoon antics of Scooby Doo. As I entered my teenage years I began to drift away from writing stories, instead picking up my pencil to compose lyrics for heavy metal songs because my new dream was to become a musician. That vision remained hopeful for many years after my high school graduation, but like most dreams of this nature it died out as I became older.

After working several menial jobs through the years that followed, my thoughts again began to turn toward writing books. Inspired by my favorite author, Stephen King, I took an online creative writing course and slowly began to develop my skills. In late 2010 I was given a violent shove, both by the job market (which was horrible to say the least, and still is) and by the persistent encouragement of close friends, to pick up my pen and begin writing again.

In early 2012, I gave birth (that's almost what it felt like) to my very first published book, Desolace. Finally having a completed novel in my hand was the best feeling in the world for me, giving me a sense of accomplishment I had waited a lifetime for. Since then it has gotten easier for me with each book I have published. Since the initial release of Desolace, I have published twelve more novels as well as an omnibus edition ebook of the entire Desolace series. Currently, The Art of Living is in the development stage.

I received this book for an honest review.
Outpost 13 is the third book in the Desolace series, and the first book I picked up in the series. I would not recommend doing that though, as you will miss a lot of stuff. I will be going back and reading books 1&2. Now from what I have gathered each book takes place in a different realm or realms. In Outpost 13 they enter into a realm that looks to be earth but things have changed from the last time Katie was in the earth realm. What the group a soon discover is almost too much to believe and a new danger presents its self. I don't want to give anything away, though I would love to tell you. I do know a lot of people that would be a big fan of this book due to the topic. It diffidently had OMG hand over my mouth, why did that have to happen moments.
I felt the plot and climax were set just right. It kept me reading to find out what happens next. With action, suspense, gore and some surprises sprinkled about. As much as I hate being left on edge at the end of a book, I think the ending was done perfectly. It finished, but still left you wanting to read the next book to find out what is going to happen next.
Now, the only problem I had with the way the story is written is the different POVs and how they often switch without notice. It takes you a minute to realize who is telling the story from one point to the next. However it didn't hinder my understanding of what was going on throughout the story either.
That aside I cannot wait to start reading this series from the beginning and get the whole story while I wait for book 4 to come out!

Just keeps getting better & better!
For anyone who enjoys a good adventure loaded with suspense & evil minions this will definitely grab your attention. This is a great series!! Each book brings new obstacles & enemies putting me on the edge of my seat. Seriously ... Who doesn't love a good zombie battle?!? But that's not all! Add in a menacing puppeteer from another realm who's vowed to keep things interesting.
Seeing the characters transform throughout as they battle everything thrown at them has been exciting & at times a bit scary. Exactly how I like it! I can't wait to see what's to come for Katie & Edward (& The Black Knight of course )!!!

I won "Outpost 13" by Lucian Barnes in a book give-away and after having read the previous instalment in the Desolace Series, "Haven" I was keen to see how the story was going to develop.
Our heroes were left in the last book near a mysterious staircase, which they decide to explore at the beginning of Outpost 13. The first part sees them unite with Kate's friend Julie before they go through another time portal to 2112 in North America which has been decimated by a virus and whose towns are raided by Zombies. By bringing the story to Earth Barnes adds more variety and colour to the Desolace Saga, which already shines with imagination and creativity. Swiftly blending genres and introducing new twists and changes of direction we are kept hooked and intrigued as to just where the story will go next, which makes it for a very entertaining and never boring read.
The second part moves back to the Black Knight and his servant George. In this world technology and fantasy magic come together to see the dark knight use modern technology, such as surveillance monitors, as well as minions to force his will on his subjects. This part is quite gruesome and not for the faint-hearted. Again, Barnes amazes with his ideas and this part of the book ends with a big surprise.
The last part returns to our heroes and their journey through the US to get to Canada while being chased by Zombies.
The writing is at its best for me when Barnes relates the adventures of our time travellers, where the dialogue is life-like and as it would be spoken. The fantasy dialogue in part two was more difficult for me to follow, but then again Barnes is sticking to the rules and tools of that particular genre. I preferred the descriptive passages in that section where Barnes shows great ability to relate his visions of the world he created to us readers.
The book is a fun read that shows how Barnes is growing as a writer while continuing to deliver new ideas.

This boo was the best one so far. I am at a loss for words, really. I don't want to say much but a part of this books shocked the hell out of me LOL I so was not thinking it would happen any time soon. George is not my fav. character but I was glad to get more in his head in this book. SCARY lol I would not want to meet him while out and about. I have to say that Katie rocked in this book because she is so head strong. I love that about her. She and Jack have been threw alot in this story. I can't wait to see how they do in the next book. This is a must read!! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did :)

Outpost 13 is the 3rd book in the Desolace series and is by far my favorite. We spend the majority of this book in "future earth" basically looking for a way back to Haven. The in-between is full of zombies and futuristic cool stuff but you'll have to read the book to see what it is.....All I can say is, "I want one!!!"

The introduction and loss of new characters in this book is woven in nicely so you understand what their purpose was in the story. The ending is a nail biter that makes you scream, "Noooooooooooo, you can't end it here!!!" Simply put, I can't wait to read the next installment in this series.

So there was evil against evil in this 3rd series... and ZOMBIES! Which I don't care for much, but Mr. Lucian did it again, I still somehow enjoyed his book even though I dislike zombies.
You know he's a great author if he can get me and other readers (who's someone who dislikes werewolves, vampires and zombies) to actually finish and ENJOY GREATLY, these books with these topics!
And now I'm off to read book 4 in the series ;-)

Katie and the group find themselves in a post apocalyptic land that resembles a future earth. They are faced with more new horrors and obstacles. They travel this land in search of a way back to Katie's own time or back to Desolace. Along the way they meet up with a couple of new faces, but they begin to wonder if they will ever find their way out.
This series about a strange group of travelers, is getting to be one of my favorite this year. With the mix of paranormal, fantasy and horror, each book has kept me fascinated and eager for the next book. The author does a great job of throwing in a new twist into each book and this one is no exception.
I have devoured all the books in this series and I keep bugging the author about the next book. I can't get it in my hands soon enough. Great read!

This book was a continuation of a series. I enjoyed following the characters deeper into this crazy world. I feel like this world had it all. Werewolves, zombies, demonic creatures, serial killers, and time travel. If you enjoy scifi or horror then this book is full of everything you could possibly want.

This series just keeps getting better! Just when things are already crazy, they get even crazier. Werewolves, vampires, a ghost then....zombies! Sad that some characters had to die, but that's just the way it is sometimes. I caught my mouth flying open during certain parts. Great book, can't wait to start the next one!

The whole series is so dark and twisted that it keeps you guessing and wanting to read the next book right away. Lucian has a way to his writing that even though you are kinda creeped out he keeps you reading. Very well done!!!!

This series must be read in order to be understood and enjoyed. The next book always starts right after the previous one ends. The first book is Desolace and the second book is Haven (Desolace).

This book was full of plot twists that came straight out of left field but in a good way :D I never saw the future coming (though I guess I should have as they had already portal jumped into the past...) or the drastic way the world changed. It renewed the complete and total urgency of their quest (at least for me) that the world would be so devastated by the Black Knight should their quest fail.

No one is entirely who or what they seem to be in this series. I never can tell who will survive and who will fall under the scythe of the reaper... I find this refreshing and exciting and frustrating! I finally start to adore (or at least kind of understand in some cases) a character they die... the real question is who will actually make it to the end of the book... or the series... or if anyone will.

With every book Lucian add another layer to the genre mashup bringing new surprises and characters (even character types) to this complex and varied fantasy horror story. At it's core though the series remains fantasy/horror throughout and I really like that. I have enjoyed the rollercoaster ride form the beginning and can not wait to read the next installment of ups and downs twists and turns!

**this book is suitable for adults only due to graphic violence and nightmarish horror elements.

How do you describe what fear itself looks like?

Lucian Barnes can.
Turning the first page on this book marks the beginning of a thrill ride. An atmosphere that that imposes the most appealing aspects of dread.

Dare you step inside?

Reality can be stretched only so far before bad things happen. Imagine an end to all things. Your worst fears lurking around darkened corners.

It will all pale in comparison to the places that this writer will take you.

No. No hints, or teasers, or spoilers on this post. You'll have to venture in, and find out for yourself. Do so with the all the lights on.

I got this book as a free download and I liked it. However the reason I gave it only 3 stars is that it is not a stand alone book you really need to read the previous books to understand all that is going on. That said it was still a very intense read with interesting characters and plenty of action. It ended on a cliffhanger and you will have to read the next book in the series to see how it will all end. My goal is to read the previous books and then re-read this story to get a better understanding of the plot, and of course find out how it all ends.

This series does need to be read in order for you to fully understand what's going on. I love that the author has expanded the horror and you never know quite where the story is taking you. It could be another world you step into. Great story line that keeps you needing to know what happens next. This book does end on a major cliffhanger! WaAR

Lucian has done it again. Outpost 13 left me craving more. He's not your typical 'happy ending' author that's for sure. In fact I rather think he penned Murphy's Law. I begin to wonder...will good prevail in Lucian 's books as it does in almost 100% of other books...or will he ad that final twist of the knife? With Lucian you just never know. And I for one can't wait to find out.

Out post 13 picks up right where Haven left us. Lucian Barnes adds twists and turns and OMG moments around every bend to lead up the climatic end that isn’t really the end. Just when I think I know where this story is going, the train jumps the tracks yet again. Three down and 4 to go. Let’s do this!
