Delia Smith's Winter Collection is a joyful celebration of the season rich with autumn fruits and winter vegetables, fish and game, soups and roasts, casseroles and comfort food. Delia seeks to investigate new ways to bring out the fullest flavor of ingredients, whether it is by oven-roasting or grilling to concentrate the essence of a dish, or by her individual blending of flavors to transform even the simplest of recipes. Delia shares her ideas for creamy risottos made in the oven, vegetable combinations to cook alongside main courses, and preserves that eliminate fuss.

Smith is also famous for her role as joint majority shareholder at Norwich City F.C. Her partner in the shareholding is her husband, Michael Wynn-Jones. Her role at the club has attracted varying media attention, from positive when she "saved" the club from bankruptcy, to negative, when making a controversial on-pitch announcement in 2005.
Already an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), Smith was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 Birthday Honours, "in recognition of ... [her] contribution to television cookery and recipe writing".
Just as the summer is fading into distant memory, the nights are drawing in and we have months of dark, wet and cold in front of us I pick this book out of my bookcase. The selection of warming stews, soups and casseroles reminds me that all is not lost. The photographs are inviting and I remember that winter is all about good food, roaring fires and mulled wine. True to Delia's style, the recipes are easy to follow and the ingredients are readily available. I can recommend this book to anyone.
To me, this was more of an "aspirational" cookbook than one I'll use regularly, since many of the recipes use ingredients I can no longer eat (like flour) or would never buy (like venison, pheasant, portobello mushrooms (allergic), and others). However, I got a great tip for better roasted potatoes which I will try next time I do them, as well as another tip for making risotto in the oven, and yet another on poaching eggs. So her tips are really helpful... and there are recipes sprinkled throughout that I will attempt, including a mascarpone and nutmeg ice cream (!) The photos will make you hungry.
Will revisit after making some recipes. Recipes generally appear to require multiple steps and some kitchen gear (hand held mixer, food processor.) Photos for many but not all recipes. Photos are gorgeous.
