THE SLAUGHTER IS UNTHINKABLE.
THE THREAT IS UNIMAGINABLE.

In the heart of Death Valley National Park, an entire busload of tourists is found slaughtered. Initial investigations suggest a tragic yet random incident, but vigilante assassin Silence Jones believes otherwise.

As Silence peels back the layers, he discovers a shocking link: an international criminal with a chilling plan. What starts as a horrifying local incident unravels into a potential terrorist threat against the United States.

With the clock ticking and the stakes higher than ever, Silence reaches out to old friends and new allies. If he's going to prevent a disaster, Silence will have to venture deeper into the shadows than he’s ever been before.

Erik Carter (author) and Gary Bennett (narrator) continue to deliver an action-packed and uniquely developed story even when we are now hearing the tenth audiobook in the series. “Muted”, a Silence Jones Action Thriller, is not just another story that feels the same as all of the others. I must give Mr. Carter credit for his ability to make each book feel rather distinct while giving the listener of previous audiobooks in the series a sense of familiarity. Silence continues to deal with his personal life (including Baxter the cat) while needing to balance a rather complex professional career with the Watchers. They are a clandestine organization that deal out their own level of justice when all other normal means fail. As with previous audiobooks, we continue to see that Silence has a steely resolve for justice yet also a much softer side for those he cares deeply for. If you have been following the series, like I have, I would highly recommend you give this newer audiobook in the series a listen. If you are new to the series, what is great about these audiobooks is that each one can be listened to as a stand-alone novel. There is no need to listen to them in sequential order, but if you are starting from the beginning, I would recommend you go that route as you will get more out of the series that way. If action and mystery is your thing, I can recommend this new audiobook and any in the series. I have enjoyed them very much.

As all of audiobooks in this series open with action, the listener is always quickly dropped into an escalating situation that has the potential to be solved in multiple ways, and this tale is no different. We are thrown into a gritty, shocking, and sadistic situation where multiple people are impacted when our main antagonist hires a notorious motorcycle gang to seek out one individual, yet many end up suffering ruthlessly. This action sets off a hunt for who it was that hired the gang and what was their reasoning for the unprovoked attack. This hunt takes the listener to a few different areas in the United States’ deserts along with a few lower-tier parts of the country, which is a bit different from the past audiobooks in the series.

For those who have listened to one or more audiobooks from this series, you will enjoy hearing from Mrs. Enfield, CeCe, and a few others we have learned of from Silence’s past. Even in the tenth audiobook, Silence continues to depend on CeCe’s advice and the things she taught him when she was alive. I know I say it in nearly all of my reviews of this series, but I like to see the humanness of Silence when most only know him as a stone-cold killer. Additionally, his passion for justice is like that of Javier from the musical Les Misérables. He will do what is necessary even if it kills him in the end.

The author writes in a very picturesque fashion where you feel that you are sitting and watching an action movie while listening. There are also plenty of quips that the author uses which are quite memorable. Visuals such as needing to find the peacock in all of the pigeons. There appears to be quite a bit of research when it comes to both weapons and technology. Even with Silence’s preferred firearms, he is trained in a variety of other ammunition options when the time comes to use them. We still see the struggle of Silence to interact in a world of speech communication, and every time I hear him speak, I cringe. I also find much of the ventage gear fun as that is from my growing up days.

The audiobook’s narration continues to be performed wonderfully by Gary Bennett who is a veteran of audiobook narrators with nearly two-hundred books under his belt at the time of the review. He is such a flexible narrator that even his other performed works feel different than this series, and that is a good thing. The words flow freely, and the pacing is well maintained. There were no issues with any audio artifacts such as swallows, background noise or compression issues. A narrator well worth listing too and his many works allow you to listen to a genre you may enjoy more.

For parents and younger audiences, this audiobook contains mature themes and rather graphic violence which may not be appropriate for younger listeners. I would recommend this audiobook to only more mature listeners.

In summary, the action continues, and the writing is well crafted. The narration is solid and without issue. The professionalism of this due makes for a well and enjoyable audiobook. If you are one who enjoys action, mystery, and adventure, I can say that you will get it all in this story.

A Riveting Ride

Erik Carter’s latest installment in the Silence Jones series, Muted, proves once again that he knows how to deliver a gripping thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. As a fan who has followed Silence Jones through nine previous adventures, the tenth book is a testament to Carter’s ability to keep the series fresh and exciting.

One of the standout features of Muted is the introduction of new and unique elements into Silence Jones’s world. The inclusion of Silence collaborating with someone adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, injecting freshness into the established dynamics of the series. Carter skillfully weaves this element into the storyline, offering fans a novel experience while staying true to the essence of the Silence Jones universe.

The narration by Gary Bennett deserves special mention. As the voice behind Silence Jones, Bennett once again delivers a stellar performance. Silence’s character is a complex one, and capturing his essence consistently throughout the series is no small feat. However, Bennett rises to the challenge, providing an authentic portrayal that enhances the overall listening experience. I can’t imagine doing the gravelly voice of Silence is easy, and I’m sure I’ve said this before but I feel like the amount of water he probably uses for a Silence Jones book is probably twice as much as any other book.

Muted takes its time to build up momentum, but once it gains speed, there’s no stopping the relentless pace until the very end. The story unfolds seamlessly, with each chapter adding layers of suspense and intrigue. This was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end and the last hour or so was pure adrenaline. I was unable to put the book down as it got closer and closer to the end.

As a devoted fan, I found myself thoroughly enjoying Muted. It’s the kind of book that immerses you in its world, making you forget about the passage of time. The ending, in particular, is a satisfying conclusion to a thrilling ride, leaving readers eager for the next adventure in the Silence Jones series.

Overall, Muted is a must-read for fans of the Silence Jones series and a compelling entry for those new to the pulse-pounding world of Silence Jones. Carter does a good job explaining who Silence was and how he got to be where he was. So in theory you could jump in at any book. But with 10 amazing audiobooks, you’ve got you choices now!

The collaboration of Carter’s storytelling and Bennett’s narration creates an irresistible combination that cements this book as a standout addition to the action thriller genre. Hold on tight as you enter the world of Silence Jones; you won’t be disappointed.

Murders, revenge, and extrajudicial killings get resolution after years of planning - 4.5 stars

Seemingly unrelated incidents get a fresh look. Not only are lawless people but justice seekers are focusing on not-quite accidents that have occurred in the past, even decades ago. Some past "accidents" appear to have been intentional.

The Watchers, an organization specializing in extrajudicial justice, have Silence Jones as their chief assassin. Silence is skilled in martial arts and wants to be sure that anyone receiving his justice is truly guilty - 300% guilty according to the legends. In his off-duty time living in Jacksonville, Florida, Silence is supportive of a blind woman (Rita Enfield) who lives next door with her cat named Baxter. Silence accepts Baxter as a houseguest as a favor. Sometimes, good deeds are better described as punishment.

In a subplot, Silence observes a respected police officer mentor and friend that he used to work with entering a gambling den. While considering doing some off the books work in his hometown, Silence gets a call to look into a massacre in Death Valley, California. The plot gets better with two sets of simultaneous events.

An unknown agent, possibly with the FBI, seems to be interested in the Death Valley incident as the action ramps up and multiple individuals appear to focus on Death Valley. You will feel the dessert heat and the overnight chill as the various parties probe the massacre and each other. There will be more violence and some exceptionally skilled martial arts demonstrations. Your patience will be reworded to learn the why and the how; when the dust settles, you will have met several violent individuals and some ad hoc groups who intend to deliver their brands of violence. The intricate plot and deliberately staged information make for a gripping adventure. At times, it seems that the cards are stacked against Silence but - as you might guess - Silence has a few tricks to bring to the stage.

Beware of quick judgments - things are not always what they seem at first glance. This story is highly recommended.

In this volume, we find Silence in a bit of a quandary and it also gives us a little bit of insight as to who he was before having to join this elite team of assassins. He has found out that his mentor whom he idolized years ago might be crooked but the people he works for say he is not allowed personal vendettas so he hires another assassin to keep an eye on his once upon a time friend Tanner.
In the meantime, a couple of weeks before that a busload of OAP retirees took a bus trip to Death Valley National Park and they were gunned down by bikers why? even before that, there have been a few suspicious deaths all in and around the Mojave desert. Silence has been hired by his company to investigate and eliminate the problem as that is what he does best but on arrival at the National Park he finds somebody else a woman doing the same as him do they join forces or both go it alone.?
Full of action as per usual and a shot of humour as well especially when he gets his blind neighbour's cat back including drool as she is taken into hospital.
He is a suave polite good dresser but deadly not someone you would not want to get on the wrong side of.
I personally think all these deserts hold mysteries about how many bodies are really out there it just seems an easy way of disposal of a body if that's your way of getting rid of a few people you don't like, so I generally think there are more bodies in these deserts whether it's the Mojave Gobi or the Sahara, I bet they all hold secrets.

Silence is back, this time when a bus load of tourists are inexplicably gunned down during an excursion to Death Valley National Park. In a further twist, the person he is trying to help doesn't want it and she also appears as highly trained as he is.

Add in biker gangs and someone with a long-held grudge and you're guaranteed lots of action and with this series, it's nonstop. Every time I read a book in this series, I know I will struggle to put it down and this was no exception. It's a total page turner.

My thanks to the author for a copy of this and this is my honest review.

I have read all of the Silence Jones books, and have enjoyed the series as a whole, but I think this one may be the best yet. I love the characters, and enjoy the touches of humor to break the tension of the main storyline. The author is talented, and not only weaves a good tale, but does it with prose that flow, and dialogue that sounds realistic. If you haven't read the others, this can be read as a standalone. But if you can, I would recommend staring at the beginning and enjoying the whole series.

I was given an ARC at no charge, but this is my honest opinion.

Muted - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

Muted, Erik Carter's 10th Silence Jones novel has vigilante assassin Silence investigating the mass murder of 'muted' victims in Death Valley. He's haunted by doubts about his former mentor, but the Watchers' mission must come first.

A wide variety of disparate characters and locations keep this all-action thriller moving swiftly, while the storyline gripped me firmly by the imagination throughout.
Muted is definitely one for spy-thriller or action movie fans. Grab your copy today and buckle up for a wild ride to adventure!

Silence Jones heads west to find out what happened when a tour bus full of senior citizens are brutally murdered in the desert. At the same he’s concerned that his old mentor might be involved in a mob operation. He soon finds another person who is looking into the bus murders. This maybe the best Silence Jones yet ! Twists, turns, conspiracies, murder and mayhem lead the way ! You will not be disappointed !

An Assassin You Love

The Silence Jones assassin character is the type for which you cheer. Erik Carter has created a methodical, yet lovable flawed man who is, well, perfect for the job. Carter’s descriptions make is easy to picture what is there and what is happening. I’m glad this is a series and not one-and-done.

…to search for someone’s missing spouse who had likely been kidnapped and to confront an infamous motorcycle gang, a suspected terrorist, and a notorious international criminal about the slaughter of fifteen souls.

Laughed out loud at Silence’s cat-sitting Baxter in his home. Baxter drooling on his furniture. Too funny!

Thank god no prostitute

This was a pretty ok book, not as good, I think, as some. Some places that should have been drawn out more went by too fast and some places, like the focus on Carmen, just went on forever. But I really like the Silence character.

Silence is golden

Silence finds himself caught between worrying about his former police mentor and following an unknown fierce-fighting woman that he wants to find out what she is looking into. Turns out they both have the same target. Can they work together? ENJOY!

Silence is back! He’s got his confidence, self control, style, mind and skills honed sharp and back! This time he’s fighting evil on 2 fronts at home and across the country! This time the person he’s trying to help doesn’t want it and doesn’t trust it. After Silence’s encounters with her he realizes she’s trained like a specialist like himself! Add in a crazy conspiracy nut, biker gang, wanna be terrorized and u have a crazy story! This book had plenty of action which i enjoyed. I live people underestimating Silence only to regret it. We need one of him in every town or major city! This book we see his love and compassion for Mrs Enfel! Plus his distain for her drooling house cat! Which brings a softer side to him! I absolutely love this book and this series. I can never put them down they r that good. I was up until 4am finishing this one last night. Never disappointed!
