Daphne, if you've read the Starcrossed books you probably think she is a total b**** and really dislike her. Correct?
Well, in this snippet into Daphne's mind you start to understand her, not dislike her so much. A brilliant piece that makes you reconsider your opinion of Daphne.

Read this because I was interested in starting this series and felt this would be a good way to 'test the waters' so to speak but I didn't like it. At all. The writing came across as that of a middle schooler, the characters weren't interesting (I know creating characters/using characters in a short story can be difficult to flesh out but still, the author could do better), the plot was boring and quite frankly and I just didn't care all around. If this is any indication, I will not be starting this series anytime soon, if ever.

In the other train, looking at me through the window, is the most beautiful boy I’ve ever seen. He has golden hair and bright blue eyes. His skin seems to glow softly, like he carries the sun inside him. One of his paint-stained hands is clutching his chest, like he just got punched, and the other is pressed flat against the glass of the window. I raise my hand and press it against my window, mirroring him. He looks so confused. Stunned. Like he’s just seen a ghost.
My enemy. Ajax.
The screams of the Furies rise to a fever pitch and the two trains pull out of the station, tearing us apart.

Is it just me or does the link in the description not work? Because it says it is a free novel on the author's website but the link does not work and I can't find it on the official website. If anyone can help with this, please comment.

"I look in the bottom right-hand corner of the mural for a signature and see the letter A. After the A is a 3-D rendering of a pile of jacks. A-jacks. Ajax."

The only thing I can say about this is: I want more. I've only read the first part (or chapter? I'm not really sure what to call it) and I've found it very interesting and great. I've learned more about the life of a Scion than the whole of the starcrossed series ever did. Helen has lived on a little island all her life and everyone there is used to her appearance. But Daphne is in NY and at a new school full of people who have never seen her before. She gets followed by the boys and hated by the girls. I think this is really interesting to see what she has to go through by not being on a secluded island and having to deal with strangers. I mean, you got a little taste of that when the Delos family came to town. The gossip never stopped and everyone loved them. I like reading about the life of that in the view of a person experiencing it.

My first novella ever. This novella definitely helps me to understand Daphne and prepare me for the rest of the series. At first, I thought she was a major bitch in Starcrossed, but now I feel a bit understanding towards her ways and character. This also helps to explain how Helen is the way she is. They both were amongst the geeks, Daphne took AP classes and Helen was supposed to as well. Both were bullied by females and loved by the males. I love the way she and Ajax meant, but now I'm more curious to know what really happened between the two of them. Wish this was more than 9 pages. At least 100!

This was a pretty neat little bit from Daphne's POV. It's not long, but it's cool to see how her and Ajax met. It's possible that it will continue. I hope so, I love Angelini's writing. Omg, it makes me remember I haven't finished Goddess yet. Damn, I better hop to it this weekend.

I really liked it, but I expected more. Now I understand Daphne much more, and now I kinda like her more too. Even trough I really liked it, there is just something missing.

The story humanises Daphne's character and you see her experience is much like that of her daughter. Her thought process is very interesting. Self-preservation is a driving factor in this. The amount of things she has to keep track of, e.g. the consequences one slip up can have, sound mentally taxing. Through the trilogy she is kind of portrayed as a bitchy character. It would be interesting to know more about her and her relationship with Ajax.

This is a short short story about Helen's mother Daphne as a teen. It follows her as she rather roughly starts at a new school and sees Ajax for the first time.

I thought it was a nice little snippet that shines more on Daphne and lets us see a little about how she as a teenager had to deal with The Face since in the main series she is quite a character.

I felt like the writing was weak compared to the traditionally published books.
