Πέρα από μια φωτισμένη ξενάγηση στα οικονομικά της ανάπτυξης και στη μάχη κατά της φτώχειας, η Esther Duflo προτείνει μια προσέγγιση που καταλήγει σε παρεμβατική άσκηση των οικονομικών, δηλαδή σ' έναν ρόλο του οικονομολόγου που τον καθιστά συντελεστή της αναζήτησης, του σχεδιασμού και της εφαρμογής οικονομικής πολιτικής, μέσα από μια μέθοδο σχεδόν πειραματική. Δηλαδή με εφαρμογή μεθόδων στην πράξη, οι οποίες ασφαλώς βασίζονται σε θεωρητικές "αναγνώσεις", υποβάλλονται όμως σε συνεχή και αυστηρή αξιολόγηση: όταν η αξιολόγηση αποβαίνει θετική, τότε μια θεωρία έχει επαληθευτεί: όταν είναι αρνητική, η θεωρία μπορεί να διαψεύδεται, η πειραματική προσέγγιση όμως επαναλαμβάνεται διορθωμένη, και ούτω καθεξής. Στόχος είναι να βελτιωθεί η πραγματική κατάσταση, να λυθεί το πρόβλημα, να ξεπεραστεί το αδιέξοδο. Βασικός στόχος είναι η βελτίωση των πραγμάτων, όλων όσα ζουν οι άνθρωποι.

About the author

Esther Duflo is a French economist, Co-Founder and Director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), and Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Duflo serves on the board of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), and is Director of the Center of Economic Policy Research's development economics program. Her research focuses on microeconomic issues in developing countries, including household behavior, education, access to finance, health and policy evaluation. She was awarded 2019 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his experimental approach to alleviating global poverty. She is the youngest person and the second woman to win the award.

Before I start my review I would like to say that I have never given one star before but honestly this ''book'' never gave me any chance.
Maybe it's all my fault for I expected this book to offer actual suggestions about how to fight poverty. Instead of that I read about short loans for the people in Bangladesh, better fertilizers for the farmers in Kenya and mosquito nets for the malaria. And all that by people who are supposed to be famous economists. Pardon me but this is unacceptable. And not only that. Selling your fancy wrapped theories from the safety of your rich country is an hypocrisy. Even more when the whole globe (including you of course) know very well that the main responsibility for the world poverty issue lies up to your own countries who have been exploiting the weak parts of the planet for centuries. And how stupid of me to ever believe that I could find solutions from this kind of people, the admirers of Milton Friedman's theories (the person whose only belief was profit, profit, profit and profit by any cost). If we really want to give an end to world poverty maybe we should all take personal lessons by individuals who have decently dedicated their lives to that purpose, individuals such as the latest Nobel Peace prize winners for example. In any case this book is completely useless.

"Part of me always wanted to do something useful for the world. It came from my mother. She is a paediatrician and she was active in a small NGO for the child victims of war. She used to travel to countries that had been through war and she would come back and show us slides to make us aware."

Despite cultural barriers, several studies have indicated that putting women in charge of decision-making, for example on village councils in India, makes it more likely that children will be well-fed and better educated.

Aunque tiene algunas aproximaciones metodológicas relevantes, el libro es una sucesión de anécdotas más o menos interesantes con escaso poder de generalización. Su enfoque microeconómico es una sofisticada manera de insistir en la manida narrativa de que la pobreza es el resultado de malas decisiones individuales, por lo que buena parte de la responsabilidad del estado es abocarse a promover que los individuos tomen las decisiones correctas. Imprecisiones evidentes afloran en su defensa del gran programa neoliberal mexicano para combatir la pobreza, Progresa/Oportunidades. Aplicar las propuestas de Duflo puede ser interesante para investigadores y especialistas involucrados en el análisis de programas muy concretos, pero no servirían, ni en 100 años, para contribuir a solucionar problemas estructurales, ya que estos prácticamente están fuera del foco de un libro que, precisamente, aborda el problema estructural por antonomasia, la pobreza. Prácticamente nulas referencias a la desigualdad y entender la pobreza exclusivamente como pobreza extrema impregnan toda la obra, por lo que buena parte de sus ejemplos no son ultiles en países de ingresos medios. Es evidente también que la limitada contribución del tipo de propuestas que se formulan en el libro para mejorar la vida de las clases más desfavorecidas solo puede comprenderse desde una mirada que parte de que, finalmente, los pobres son ciudadanos de segunda que deben aceptar pequeñas y progresivas mejoras que, con suerte, acerque, a lo largo de dos o tres milenios, su nivel de vida al de las sociedades acomodadas.

Aperçu assez éclairant des divers enjeux auxquels font face les programmes de santé et d'éducation. J'ai resté moins convaincu par les solutions proposées par contre. Les cas présentés sont intéressants mais j'ai souvent trouvé qu'on présumait trop rapidement que leurs conclusions étaient généralisables.
