'Het veerhuis', Ida Gerhardt's second volume of poetry, was published immediately after the end of World War II in 1945. Her poetry has the solemn seriousness I found in 'Kosmos', her first collection. She writes about being a teacher of the Classics: both Lucretius and Epicurus find their way into her book. She also shows us the scenery of her youth. Often poems didn't so much speak to me as a whole, most of the time a line or two lingered long after reading and made me aware how poem by poem she is developing her style and developing her craft. 'Het veerhuis' is not available in translation.
