Britt Anderson went along with everything the doctors said for nearly four years, but she was still dying at eighteen. The cancer had won leaving her without a future, without any options, and without control. No control, except for how she would leave this world. As Britt tries to end her life by going into the frigid waters she realizes her mistake. She struggles to get back to shore, to cry out for help, but her atrophied muscles are useless and the frigid water steals the breath from her chemo-scarred lungs. Despite her father’s attempts to reach her, she flies over the waterfall.
When Allister Parks finds Britt’s fragile body on the riverbank something calls out to him. Ignoring the warnings of his sister, Allister brings Britt back from the edge of death. The only problem is that an Eternal like Allister isn’t allowed to touch those who have already passed from this world. It is forbidden; an infraction punishable by death.
As Britt relishes her new cancer-free life and senior year of high school, her very existence threatens Allister’s place in this world. Allister struggles to keep Britt a secret from the Eternal Council and out of the hands of the only Eternal who already knows the truth: the one who stole her guardian angel.
Taking Angels by C.S. Yelle is book one in The Angel Crusades Series. I haven’t read many angel themed books but am finding that I really enjoy them. Even with my limited exposure, I feel like Mr. Yelle’s take on this genre is very unique. The story was fast paced and the characters, both main and secondary, were all likeable and easy to relate to.
Britt Anderson is eighteen years old and is tired, just tired. She has been fighting cancer for four years and is losing the battle. Britt is ready to give up the fight. Her parents have taken her on a canoe trip and her dad puts her down to rest at the edge of a fast moving river. This is her chance. So she pushes off and lets herself get pulled into the rapids. But no sooner does she get pulled in, she regrets her decision. Maybe she’s not ready yet after all. But it’s too late. She’s too weak to fight the strong current pulling her down. Little does she know that there is someone near that has been following her that wants her guardian angel. In the world C.S. Yelle has created, we all not only have a soul within us but also our guardian angel is within it. There are also Eternals which are beings that are born without a soul and live on earth and have the ability to heal. There were actually three Eternals there that day at the river. Kendall who was addicted to stealing the guardian angels from humans. And a brother and sister, Allister and Angelina Parks, who had been following Kendall to try to stop him.
An Eternal can heal a human but if they touch one after they die it would turn the human into an Eternal as well. And this is strictly forbidden by the Eternal’s laws. It is punishable by death. When Allister encountered Kendall in the process of stealing Britt’s guardian angel, he stopped him. But what was it about her? He couldn’t let her go. He was instantly drawn to her and couldn’t imagine walking away. So he touched her. And Britt’s new life began.
I found Britt to be strong, and independent. She was thrown into a new life with no idea as to what was going on. One of the things I loved was her three best friends, or three amigos as she called them. They were her support system. They were awesome. I loved Allister but his sister took a bit to warm up to. Kendall of course, is not good at all, but I couldn’t help but to feel for him at times. And then there is Gabe! “sigh” That’s all I’ll say about that.
Britt’s life will never be the same. But as her feelings begin to develop for Allister and she is just beginning to imagine the life she could have free from illness, everything changes. There is a lot more going on here than just the fact that she is now an Eternal and she is thrown right into the middle of it all. And what is it about her that draws others to her? What is it that makes her special?
I really did love this book. Britt and Allister were so sweet together. There are plenty of heart pounding scenes as well. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. And darn those epilogues. I will definitely be waiting for the next book in this series to come out.
In a desperate attempt to end the pain of her terminal disease, Britt Anderson decides to take her fate into her own hands. It’s too late when Britt changes her mind, to live out the little life she has left when she is tossed over a rushing waterfall.
Something and everything is different when she wakes at the local hospital. There is no pain; there is no trauma; there is no cancer. Unable to comprehend the events of this day, she is reminded of the two radiant figures, her angels perhaps, as they appeared after she fell from the rocks. Was this their doing?
Her miraculous recovery has stunned her doctors, her family and closest friends. But the wonder didn’t stop there. Her body transformed into something brilliant and fit. Her hair grew back within days and every scar disappeared instantaneously.
An incredible urge to heal soon took over as she learned she could help others as she’d been helped by her angels. As news of these miracles spread through town, her angels returned to her with warning. All which happened to Britt the fateful day at the waterfall may bring harm her way. As she learns the truth of her new being, she learns how the actions of her angels are prohibited.
There is another force at work in Britt’s small town. Britt sees him and his actions in her dreams as he takes lives and capturing their souls and guardian angels in the process. It’s Britt he seeks in revenge and restitution. The thought of her family and amigos in danger force her to run. Run for love and the life of her creator.
Taking Angels is a brilliant story of love, loss and the power of the unknown. Each character is well thought out to compliment and contrast each other. It’s clean, edgy and full of forgiveness, determination and devotion. Within the first few chapters, C.S Yelle has you drawn to Britt’s role as a victim of a vicious disease, then celebrating her recovery. He has flawlessly set you up to campaign for her throughout the entire journey.
Holy Wow! I loved this book. It kept my attention from beginning to end and of course I need to know if there's gonna be more. I sure hope there is. i want to know if Gabe is ok and what Britt, Allister and Angelina have in store for them next. I'm totally getting a head of myself aren't I? The concept of guardian Angels being inside of us instead of around us was fresh and new. I loved the thought of it. How they guard us from within and protect our souls. That was something I've never read about and I read a lot. :)
Britt was a girl who struggled with chemo and radiation since the time she was 14. Now, at 18, she's given up. She no longer has the fight within her tiny body anymore. When she goes on a picnic with her parents she talks her dad into letting her sit alone for a while in the lake by the picnic area they are at. As she starts slowly letting herself fall into the water, giving up, she thinks of her family and three best friends who've stood by her all these years. Now she doesn't want to die but it's too late. The water keeps pulling her under and she doesn't have the strength to get herself out. As the water pulls her closer to the falls she feels her body floating one minute than sinking down the falls as everything goes black. Britt wakes to voices in her head. Beautiful melodic voices she believes are Angels. The only thing is they are arguing from what she can make out. As Britt struggles to open her eyes she's now in an ambulance with her parents on the way to the hospital. She's alive and feeling better thanks she's ever felt.
Things start changing for Britt. She's healthy and pain free. Even her hair is starting to grow back. She just can't get those beautiful voices out of her head. Did the Angels save her and if so why? Why did they bring her back. Why did they choose her? She's not gonna let this go though. Britt is gonna live for the first time. Britt goes on to a life she was never allowed before. She's in her senior year of high school and with her three closest friends by her side she feels invincible. Then the voice is here. At her school. Allister Parks and his sister Angelina are the new kids in town. They just moved in and Britt feels the connection to them right away. She believes they are her Angels that saved her but as she gets closer to Allister she starts to re think things. Was it all a dream?
At night Britt has these horrible nightmares of people being killed. Their silent screams and a weird smokey essence pulled out of them the last thing she feels as she wakes up screaming and soaking wet from sweat herself. When she realizes her dreams are actually visions she tries hard to figure out what's going on.
There's a whole lot more to this book but you have to read it to find out. Car chases, crazy infatuations, archangels are just a few of the things you'll read about. Such an amazing read. I can't believe it's over. I've totally got end of book remorse. I want more Allister and Britt. Oh, and the epilogue! Omg! Why do you torture me like that. Ok just go out and get is book. You just have too.

Wow, this book was absolutely amazing! I mean, amazing in a big way. I never read a book quite like this, I did not really know what to expect, and am so glad I read it. I was hooked from the first few chapters, and it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. I was neglecting my family and animals, as I could not tear myself away from this book.
I loved the main character Britt, she is such a strong girl, and she grew so much in this book. I love all the revelations we find out about her. I also just love Allister, he is the ultimate male there is, that is until Gabe came along about halfway, and there is some major tear-jerker moments, I mean big time. Right now after finishing the book I am still reeling from that last few chapters.
We are not left with a huge cliffhanger, but a bit of one. I am so upset at what happens with Gabe, I have no idea of his fate. I can’t tell you too much about him as it could spoil it for you. I love the concept of the Eternals, it was a new one to me, and really loved it. We still have the angels around, and the Eternal who is killing innocent people by stealing their guardian angel (which lives inside a person in this) and kills them.
I liked the mystery around Britt, on why she seems to draw people to her, and how they just feel the pureness in her and come to care for her fast. Even the one who tried to kill her is drawn to her, as is Gabe.
I love Britt’s 3 best friends; they are a great support for her. Her parents really impressed me on the understanding they have on the changes with Britt and why she needs to do the things she does.
I can’t stress enough how awesome this book is. One of the best I have read in a long time, It was written so well too, and just the right amount of questions at the end to make you want the 2nd book now, but not enough of a cliffhanger to make you mad, lol.
I highly recommend this book, and give it 5 huge stars out of 5.
Cover review: I give the cover 5 out of 5 stars too. It’s done well, and fits the book. It attracted me some, but more important it didn’t turn me away like some covers will.
I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review.
Oh my goodness, TAKING ANGELS will take you on an emotional ride! It blew my mind with all the twist and turns. Every time you think you know it all or how things are going turn out, BAM! Something new and unexpected happens. It was mind blowing! Be prepared for what you think about Angels and Immortals to be taken to a whole new level. I have to commend the author for originality, though many books these days have Angels or Immortals I have not seen it done quite this way. Britt is dying from cancer and is tired of the pain. She just wants to give up the fight to live so she can finally be at peace. However, life has other plans for her. She is touched by what she calls an angel. But “her angel” has done a forbidden thing when he touched her. He broke the law that says you are not to touch someone who is already dead. The consequences of this action may prove to be more agonizing to Britt than her endless fight with cancer. Britt’s cancer is miraculously gone. She gets to spend her Senior Year at the local High School with her three best friends. But things aren’t exactly peachy king keen. Britt is having nightmares about local murders. She must find out why and to stop it and she thinks the two new teens to the town hold all the answers. Allister and Angelina Parks may very well be the “angels” Britt say on the river bank that day but they aren’t exactly angels. They are Eternals and for an Eternal to touch a person after they are dead is a crime punishable by death. So they must do everything in their power to keep the Council from finding out about Britt. But the more Britt pushes for answers, the more everyone becomes more in danger. As they fight for their life and the lives of their loved ones, things just seem to go from bad to worse. Can Britt find a way to keep her parents, friends, and town safe while also finding a way to save Allister from the Council?
Eighteen-year-old Britt Anderson was dying of cancer. She decides she can no longer handle the pain and torment it is putting on her loved ones. She decides to end her life by drowning. Eternal Allister Parks is drawn to Britt and brings her back to life, changing her; an action that carries a death sentence.
Wow, this story was amazing. It keeps getting more intense as it goes on, making it hard to put down. It flows well and is an excellent read. I was continually surprised by what happened next.
Britt Anderson is astonishing. When her cancer is gone, she wants to help everyone around her not concerned for her own well-being. She is a loyal and remarkable person. Almost everyone who comes across her is enchanted with her; especially the boys: Allister, Kendal, and Gabe.
I love Allister. He is a great hero. He wants the best for Britt. He is passionate about her and will do whatever it takes to protect her.
Kendal Statford’s character is interesting. He’s okay for a bad guy. He’s morally wrong but has his good qualities. That makes him very realistic because people’s personalities are seldom black and white.
The plot was definitely new and refreshing. C. S. Yelle did an astounding job creating a believable world and supernatural qualities. The characters are multidimensional. It is easy to relate to them and feel emotionally connected. This is a series I will want to continue. I’m dying to know what Yelle comes up with next.

When I think back on Taking Angels, one thing in particular comes to mind: Pay Attention. This story is chock full of characters and plot lines and woe to the reader who gets distracted for even a few moments.
When we first meet Britt, the poor girl is so despondent after four years of battling cancer that is now terminal that she elects to let herself be swept away by the current. As often happens, she changes her mind at the last second but it’s too late—or so it would seem. Britt wakes up to a miracle but just what kind of miracle is it? By the time this part of Britt’s story comes to a close, her reality has become something quite unexpected and a sad tale of illness and death has turned into a fantastical drama.
As I mentioned, there are many characters and quite a few are nicely drawn. I liked Britt a lot other than in one particular scene with Gabe in which I felt she behaved thoughtlessly when she could have been kinder. I also liked Allister and Gabe although the latter’s attachment seems out of character to me, considering who he is. Best of all, though, are the three girls—Cassie, Trish and Elisa—who have stood by Britt all through her illness. Would that we all could have such stalwart supporters!
This first book in the trilogy comes to a climactic end and definitely left me with an interest in following Britt’s journey. I’ll be waiting for the chance to read the next book.
I am willing to read just about anything but I wasn’t sure if I would be able to read this. My husband is battling cancer so I find it difficult to read books that involve a battle with this serial killer. I am so glad I took a shot on this book. Britt is dying. She is 18 years old and cancer is taking her life. She convinces her parents to take her camping one last time. As she sits at the edge of a waterfall, she realizes that she is ready to end it all. The pain is unbearable and she wants to end it on her own terms. Sinking into the water she realizes that she is a fighter. Waking up on the way to the hospital after drowing, Britt knows something happened. By the time she reaches the hospital it is obvious. What do you do when you gain a second chance at life? This story was difficult for me in the beginning but the story is overwhelming. CS has managed to create a whole new paranormal world for me and I love it. Allister is the main male character in this story but I have to admit that I am a Gabe fan and can’t wait for more!
I've been a fan of CS Yelle's writing since I read his Ter Chadain fantasy series. When I found out he wrote a YA paranormal romance, I couldn't wait to check it out! TAKING ANGELS didn't disappoint.
The story follows eighteen-year-old Britt Anderson, a young woman who has been battling cancer and ultimately decides she'd rather die than go one more day experiencing her pain and suffering. When she takes that fateful step to end her own life, that's when the adventure really begins for her. She's saved by a mysterious rescuer. Not only doesn't she die, but she's miraculously healed.
Yelle takes the reader on a journey into a world where Eternals live among humanity, angels aren't exactly like the Bible would have us believe, and evil comes in many forms. Britt finds and loses the love of her life, creating a sense of tension that had me turning the pages. I particularly appreciated that the story has a concrete conclusion while still leading the reader into the next book. I'm very much looking forward to book two in this wonderful series!
Taking Angels is a paranormal adventure where we follow the life of 18 year old Britt Anderson. From the very beginning, my breath as well as my heart was stolen by this courageous and unfortunate young woman, who should’ve been enjoying her senior year of high school but instead was suffering through the agony of cancer. The moment when her father eased her body into the water, completely unaware of her intentions, was just so heart breaking I almost felt myself tearing up and THAT was at the beginning on the book.
As the waters cradle her body away from the shore Britt is relieved, unable to bear another moment of her suffering until memories of her family and friends suddenly make life feel not so unforgiveable. In an desperate attempt to paddle herself back to shore and cry out for help, the current proves too powerful against her fragile frame and throws her from the rocks and into the darkness down below. When she awoke from an the plunge that should have killed her, Britt instead finds herself in the company of two shadowy figures, whispering in melodic voices about disastrous consequences , but she just couldn’t understand them. If that wasn’t strange enough, her body that had been long tormented and broken down by cancer is miraculously cured. We’re talking more than just the cancer cells, every imperfection, every scar and mark on her body had completed recovered as if cancer have never touched her in the first place. Free from cancer and opening her arms up to a life she had thought she had lost, Britt plans to take every day as a gift and live to the fullest.
That’s when we’re introduced to the lovely brother and sister Allister and Angelina Parks who are the new kids at Britt’s high school. Giving off an impression of preferring solitude, they elect to remain recluse from all interaction with the rest of the school until Britt, who was already fascinated by them, matches their voices back to the fated incident at the bottom of the waterfall. She starts to question everything around her. Who are these people? Are there such things as Angels? Was it just a coincidence or do the newcomers actually have a deeper secret of their own? A secret that can explain everything that had happened to Britt’s body and how she was able to not only get up from her fall but reappear 100% renewed! Their secret exceeds our known world and plunges waist deep into the word of guardian angels. But when the gift of life is bestowed upon them there couldn’t have been a more tragic consequences and Britt learns this hard way.
I have to congratulate C.S Yelle on his incredible ability to capture the voice of not just our main characters, but also every single side character that appeared along the way. Each had their own tone and voice; each had their own characteristics, their own background and personality that really allowed the book to breath. It was multi-layered and beautifully crafted. There’s absolutely everything in this amazing book, we have action mixed with the right amount of romance and suspense. Not only that but I absolutely loved the heroine’s introduction to the story, and how she had started off seeking death only to be rewarded with the gift of life and a love that’ll make you squeal into your pillow.
A heart felt and beautiful story to match an amazing front cover, Taking Angels is definitely on the top of my favourite books of 2013.
TAKING ANGELS TOUR REVIEW: Taking Angels was such an engaging and fun read. Our main character, Britt, has been diagnosed with cancer and knows that she isn't going to last much longer. During a family trip, quite possible her last, Britt decides that if she's going to die, it's going to be her call, not cancer's. So, she decides to drown herself, convenient that the family trip is at an island completely surrounded by water. But instead of succeeding, Britt finds herself alive and 110% cancer free. Before she woke up, Britt remembers being surrounded by two figures glowing, angels perhaps? And guess what, they look a whole lot like Allister and Angelina Parks, the new kids in town. In addition to that, Britt starts seeing murders in her dreams and wakes up to find out that they are real. Say what?? She soon finds out that the murderer in her dreams is Kendall, a corrupted Eternal who attempted to steal her guardian angel/soul but failed and now they are irrevocably linked together. Talk about intense.
There was so much mystery surrounding Britt, you couldn't help but get drawn towards her. From the start, she evokes emotion by reaching out to the reader's feelings as she struggles through life weighed down by cancer. Then, when she is healed, her life starts to spiral out of control and we as the reader get pulled along for the ride. There are still so many unanswered questions regarding Britt. Why is everyone attracted to her? Kendall and Allister I get, but Gabe? Speaking of Allister, I have to admit that I am a bit tired in general of insta-attraction between a hero and a damsel in distress. This isn't aimed at the book, just in general, but that is what happens. I do admit that I like the spark between Allister and Britt, but I felt like there was so much going on that their relationship didn't grow as much as I would have liked. Hopefully with the second book, we can see their relationship grow.
Now let's talk about Britt's three amigos. Can I please get me a package? They are probably the most supportive friends I've ever read about. They take everything within their stride and show that no matter what their girlfriend is going through, no matter how crazy and out of the world it sounds, they are willing to stand by her. I loved how they reacted to Britt and the Eternals, how they protected her even though against the Eternals, they were powerless. The love that they have for Britt is just amazing, I can't stress that enough.
The ending was a cliffhanger but not really. I liked the conclusion to the overall problem that was hanging over our heads the entire story, but at the same time, it wasn't completely solved. Bastion, the bad guy, was still on the loose and the ending threatened the three amigos. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? All I know is I need the second book right now because those beautiful girls are in danger and we cannot have that.
I highly recommend Taking Angels, it's definitely a super fun read and I promise you'll get super invested into the characters because they are just so awesome! Also, would it be too much to ask for some more Gabe in the next book? :)
Taking Angels is a great new YA paranormal romance. The synopsis describes it well, so I'm going to skip straight to my review.
The negatives:
Instalove. If you read my reviews often (which I hope you do!), you know how I feel about instalove. It really takes hugely extenuating circumstances for it to work for me. This book did have one element that could have made it work - a supernatural reason for the instalove. Britt is special, and both angels and Eternals can sense her purity - that something special. She draws them to her. So instalove should be totally allowed, right? But, it still just didn't work for me. After Allister was initially drawn to her by that purity, I still wanted to see something develop between them organically, and I just never saw it. I never believed in their deep love. When more characters starting falling in love with Britt with absolutely no provocation, Yelle totally lost me in the romance department.
What I loved:
Eternals and Guardian Angels. I thought that the concept of this book was very unique, mixing the idea of Guardian Angels with something new - Eternals, which I had never heard of before (I assume Yelle made them up, but I guess I don't know for sure). The interaction between humans, Eternals and angels was very interesting, and I thought that Yelle did a great job with worldbuilding - giving us their history and the rules of their societies without shoving tons of information at us at once or withholding too much for too long. It's a delicate balance.
Cured. I also loved the dynamic that Britt's miracle cure created in the book. I've read other books where someone was brought back from the brink of death before, but it was always due to some sudden accident - never from a long-term illness. Britt had been battling cancer for so long, it was a way of life for her. She didn't have any prospects of a future life, and suddenly the world was opened up to her! I loved her response to that - even her reaction to the little things like being able to attend school again. It was very realistic.
Side effects. When Britt is cured, there are some pretty interesting side effects. I don't want to get into what they are because that would be spoilery, but suffice it to say they add a few surprises to the book.
So, while the romance angle of this book didn't completely capture my heart, the rest of the story was great! I give it 3.5/5 stars.
***Disclosure: This book was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given. All opinions are my own***
Love this cover almost as much as I loved this book! The concept of our guardian angels being within instead of just an entity was something fresh and new. Yelle's style of writing and ability to transform the reader into Britt's world although not unique, only added to the depth of this powerful story.
18 year old Britt Anderson should be enjoying her senior year of high school. Instead her poor body has been ravished by cancer. A planned accident at the local waterfalls leaves her wondering who the two dark figures were that found her at the bottom of the falls; better yet, why does she feel no pain? Her cancer is miraculously gone, her hair begins growing back and all the scars left from her treatments have dissapeared. Cancer free and living life to it's fullest, Britt and her friends start school and celebrate with shopping, pizza and slumber parties.
Allister and Angelina Parks are the new kids in school, and Britt immediately feels a pull to Allister. The Parks are standoffish and don't interact with the other kids at school, but as soon as Britt hears their voices, those melodic voices, she's convinced that they are the dark figures that saved her life at the falls. Her very own angels. The closer she gets to Allister though, the more she doubts the events that fateful day at the falls.
Britt soon realizes that whatever it was that healed her fragile, broken body can be shared with others. When she is approached by Allister Parks with a warning about using this gift elation turns to confusion. Then when the people she has healed start turning up dead, confusion turns to concern. She's also plagued by nightmares, vividly real nightmares. When she see's one of her nightmares come to life her confusion becomes full on fear.
This book is rattled with action, suspense and romance. Our imperfect heroine that never thought she'd live until Prom is now pursued by not one, but two young men. One that made her who she is, accidentally or not it is forbidden, and the wrong people are now aware of Britt's existance. With an entrancing storyline and a few twists and turns along the way, Taking Angles will keep you guessing right up until the very end.
This book is a must read for young and old alike. Well written dialogue and an uncanny ability to convey the characters emotions, even the confilcted ones, gives the story realism and depth. 5/5 for this one... for reals!!
Firstly, if you start reading this and then comparing it to another book I'd say, keep reading and get to where it doesn't remind you so much of said book. And I think that is exactly why this was so hard for me to get into. It wasn't until around 35% that I wasn't comparing this to other books. I mean, don't get me wrong sometimes this is ok but for some reason this story wasn't sharing itself with me, or I wasn't allowing it to, because I was so distracted by the comparisons.
Then we have the normal clichés that I absolutely hate. I mean, I get that these people are Eternals and Britt is kind of special but he fell for her so quickly. There are certain people that have an appeal that draws you to them but he was wanting to spend his entire life (and that is quite long for an Eternal) with her after just a few short weeks. And although it is weeks they haven't spent a lot of time together at this point so it was like nails to a chalkboard for me.
The redeeming qualities were quite a few though. I did really enjoy reading about Britt. She is different and the beginning is amazing in a dire but awesome way. I felt like I knew what she was going through on page one. And then the plot was pretty good once I got passed that 35% point. The story was really different from anything else from there on, with twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. And honestly, I love that!
So... as I said above, this one is hard for me to review. It is a good book, an engaging story line with interesting and intriguing characters, and I liked the ending. But that first 35% just killed me. Actually, it was like 20% because the beginning was amazing and is probably why I stuck with that 20%, to see what was going to happen to Britt!
Totally recommended! Just don't think of other books while you read this. It's not like other books out there, it really is a story line all on its own.
Britt Anderson has battled cancer for four long, hard years. She’s ready to give up. But she can’t. Not yet. There’s so much more life yet for her to live. Something within her calls out and urges the forbidden, the unspeakable to be done. Now, her very existence is a threat…to everything. Nothing will ever be the same.
Right from the get-go, this book grabbed tight and wouldn’t let go. The amazing beginning was quite unique. Again, my Great Movie Rule came to mind. Basically, my rule goes like this: If there’s sex or a death within the opening scene (or first 5 minutes of the movie), then it will be a great movie. I am still trying to figure out whether I can apply it to books or not. For this book, I would have to say: Yep, great!
Reminding me of Dead Like Me yet with a twist of Twilight, this fast-paced paranormal was that roller coaster ride that 30 seconds after the full stop, I said I would like to do again. Life and death seemingly hung in the balance the whole time. The view on immortality and the afterlife is brilliant. The main premise here remained elusive and mysterious even after I was told what was happening and took a while to sink in.
All in all, another fantastic read written by a fantastic author. I cannot believe how fast I plowed through this one, not able to put it down. I was pleasantly surprised the story is not completely over. The story in the book finished (like I expect a book to finish), but in the end, we are promised there is more to come and teased in the epilogue. I cannot wait for the sequel!
With limited violence, no profanity, and no romance beyond a kiss here and there, this is perfectly suitable for young adult audiences.
Oh my goodness!! What a great read this book is!! I was sucked in from the very beginning to Britt and her struggle with cancer to fight for her life!! I love how CS Yelle took a potentially heartbreaking story, turned it paranormal, and made it a journey through the life of a teenage girl!
Britt Anderson wasn't supposed to live. She wasn't supposed to WANT to live for that matter. She had planned on taking her own life over a waterfall to end her suffering from cancer. She didn't want her family and friends to watch her die right before their eyes and saw no other way out besides suicide. A couple of Eternals and one rogue Eternal had a different plan for her though. Which begins the tale of Britt's new found life and journey.
Alastair is hot, romantic, and head over heels for Britt... could he be worth living for???? Please say yes Britt!!!! ;) One problem... Alastair is an Eternal. He finds Britt teetering on the brink of death from her spill over the waterfall and his touch heals her... but it does more than heal her. It turns her to an Eternal like himself. Where is the problem??? Well, the problem is it is forbidden for an Eternal to make another Eternal and the punishment is death. Now Britt not only has to fight for her own life, but that of the ultra-stud Alastiar as well!! I have to say the kick butt Britt rocks and I LOVED that she found that side of her and put it to use!
CS Yelle weaves a web of romance, angst, fear, death, laughter, and love into an amazing story!! I give Taking Angels 4 stars on the knock my socks off scale and cannot wait for book 2!! Now, when can we expect that book CS??? ;)
Britt Anderson has been handed a tough lot in life. At only 18 years old, she's dying of cancer and she's tired of fighting. A final family trip camping has Britt determined to end her life. Convincing her father to help her to the river, she propels herself into the current and goes over the waterfall. It's her final gift to her parents to relieve them of their suffering watching her die inch by inch. When her battered and bruised body washes ashore at the bottom of the falls, it's not death that meets her. She is touched by Allister Parks and not only does he bring her back to life, but she is now cancer free and her injuries from going over the waterfall are healed.
This book started out strong and I was immediately drawn into the story. How would this young woman handle being healthy again? Britt reconnects with her 3 best friends and they begin their senior year of high school together. When Allister and his sister show up at the same school, Britt is drawn to the handsome young man. I found this part of the book dragged especially with page after page of Britt getting dress, jumping in her friend's jeep and them going to school. The book got interesting again with the introduction of Kendal, an Eternal, who has been doing evil deeds and breaking every code Eternals are supposed to follow. I don't want to give any spoilers here, but I didn't like the path this character took. While the author does present some unique perspectives about Eternals, angels, and half-angels, I found this book was too easy to put down. However, an intriguing Epilogue should keep young adult readers interested in this series.
Britt is dying and has given up hope. She's terminal but has a plan to end her suffering. A canoe ride to an island with her parents is right on track with her master plan until fate intervenes and changes everything.
Faced with a formerly impossible future Britt discovers her health at the touch of a mysterious savior comes with powers and a curse. Her senior year of high school begins and the now healthy Britt jumps in full swing.
Things are great and her curiously strange new acquaintances give little in way of help as she struggles to figure out what has happened to her.
I really like the balance between bold and vulnerable in Britt. She is a great MC. There were also a fair share of twists and turns in this read. I was happy, shocked, angry and creeped out through the read! A plethora of emotional involvement and intrigue emanate from the pages of this book! And can you say cry baby! Oh man I lost it ultimately and wanted to curl up and cry at some points. It's just an intense read when you get to the last half. I would so read it again and probably will once book two becomes available!
I fell hard for this cast of characters and I loved the plot. I seriously was stunned in the first three chapters! YA is just done right sometimes! C.S. Yelle definitely had me captivated from the very first page! I certainly recommend this book to anyone who loves YA and fantasy!
This book caught my attention right away. I am sure we all know someone who has suffered with cancer. One of my closest friends is battling today. I wasn’t sure where this book would go and how would Yelle get us there. From the very beginning, we are introduced to the trials of life and decisions that we have the power to make. My first thought was this book will be about cancer but it was more about life. Britt is a strong young girl who faces challenges in her life and after given another chance, pushes through with determination even in her confusion about what is happening. Allister, the Eternal, is smitten with Britt. There is something about her that attracts many of the characters to her -- Eternals and Angels alike.
Yelle delivers a paranormal twist with Angels and Eternals that was very intriguing and mysterious. I loved the characters and the depths of each that brought so much power to this book. Yelle takes you along a journey of emotions. The suspense along with the mystery is amazing. I took something away with this reading, No matter what the situation is, keep pushing and never give up. Fight till there is no fight left and to be strong in the face of adversity.
Taking Angels is a really interesting paranormal romance which follows Britt after her suicide attempt to escape the final stages of her cancer. When she awakens in hospital not only alive, but in the best health and physical shape she’s known for years, a wonderful story of otherworldly powers and new dangers opens up for her. The characters are great and their motivations understandable, and Yelle puts a great new twist on the mythologies of angels. I really liked Britt and how strong she is, and how she always tries to put others before herself. Even the antagonist of the story, Kendal, is an interesting one who I couldn’t bring myself to hate even though he does horrific things. All of them are fleshed out brilliantly with even side characters completely believable.
This is a refreshing story which not only manages to break away from the many other kinds of supernatural creatures often found in paranormal fiction, but does so while balancing against the very real rollercoaster of cancer. It manages to achieve something of a three-way balance of the horror of cancer, the typical lives of teenage girls, and the new supernatural existence Britt experiences. It is a novel of finesse and believability, and I can’t wait to continue the series!
Britt is eighteen years old and dying of cancer. A trip to the lake with her parents and a crazy "accident" lead her to a whole different death experience. Suddenly, she is in the hospital - uninjured and cancer free. On top of that, she can heal others. But that is just the tip of the iceberg, as she discovers she is indeed different than she has ever been. She comes across two new siblings in town, Allister and Angelina, and she is certain that they have something to do with her miraculous healing at the lake. They are now all connected in a wonderous way, and they, along with some others, must stick together to ensure that bad triumphs over evil.
This book had so much going on. The action never stopped. I particularly liked the fact that Britt was connected to Kendal and could see his actions through her dreams. It gave the word creepy a whole new meaning. Whether they were plotting against the bad guys or trying to avoid capture, it was a constant thrill ride. I loved the Guardian Angel/Eternal theme, and the relationship between Britt and Allister was great. They were so dedicated to each other. All of the characters were so real. C.S. Yelle does it again for me..and I love it!
Give me a good and entertaining angel story and I'm a happy girl. Author C.S. Yelle has made me more than happy, he's made this reader thrilled. Taking Angels is a refreshing YA paranormal filled with excitement, angels, a sick then healthy teen girl and the angel who falls for her, twists and turns and more. Thank goodness there's more to come because I'm a fan of the Eternals, Allister and Britt.
I really felt the author did a wonderful job of making his characters real, especially Britt. The opening scene with this cancer-stricken teen and her parents touched me. I was not only sympathetic to Britt, I actually liked her. I also liked her three girlfriends who stood by her and on the boy side, Allister became a favorite. His attachment to Britt happened quickly and I was about to toss out the insta-love complaint, but I can't. I understood Allister's love for Britt and found it gave the story a gentle sweetness which I found endearing.
Celestial beings, mystery, romance, Taking Angels offers reader a lot within its pages. Let C.S. Yelle entertain and enchant you as he did me. Angel fans will want to check this one out.
I really like how this book started off. All the drama, it was just great. So dark. I'll say, not your typical start off in a story. The story mainly revolves around Allister's trial, the escaping and stuff. I think the whole plot was fine. I actually like it because the author manages to places almost all my favorite elements, like the kidnapping, near death experience, etc.
However, the story went a bit bumpy after that. At first, the author manages to convey the scenes and events but by the end, it jumps from one thing to the other. The book didn't really manage to explain some stuff that I hope would be explained in the next book (w/c I didn't really know about until I finished this book). Also, I hope there would be more action.
The really down side of this book is the romance. It's a complete and total harem. Everybody is falling in love with the girl without anything really happening. I mean if she shows kindness maybe but they haven't been together that long to actually see that. I get the "she pulls people to her" but seriously? 3 dramatic boys, you could say.
All in all, I think this is a great book. It's pretty exciting for my taste.
I was very lucky to have had this book sent to me, and although it is always hard to read off of my laptop i was very engrossed in this book. It had me going the minute i started it- wanting to know what was going to happen to her after she went over the falls, and even more so after she was magically cured of her cancer. It was a very easy read, that kept me wanting more, wanting to know what was going to happen, especially after Allister and his sister Angelina came into the picture. Who were these two, and what was their deal? Definitely looking forward to C.S. Yelle's next book in this series. Cant wait to find out what happens with Allister & Angeline's family, as well as Britt.
As a community member to where this book takes place, I have to say it was very accurate. I love the mythology and the characters. The relationship Britt has with her friends is incredible and is easy to associate with the friendships I have. The way the author weaves the characters into the plot is amazing. Five stars deserving.
Exhausted by years of illness and chemotherapy, Britt plans to end her life. But as the river takes her over a waterfall she realises that she does want to live. Unearthly intervention restores her to her distraught parents, and not only is she free of trauma, the cancer seems to have vanished. Can it possibly have been angels who touched her? And what happens next for an eighteen year old who had forgotten how to live?
The hospital can find only accelerated healing and Britt goes shopping for stylish clothes with her girl pals, to make a new family life in Grand Rapids. But she's experiencing unpleasant dreams and she realises that what the angels did to her might not have gone entirely right. We want her new life to be joyous - but everything comes at a price. Persuaded to volunteer at the hospital, Britt finds that her touch helps to heal some patients... and that a sinister man is going around doing the reverse.
This young adult paranormal tale with touches of horror, is mainly for girls. There are similarities with 'Twilight' - a glamorous brother and sister arrive at school, who are wealthy, adept and long-lived. Britt is attracted to the young man who, like Edward Cullen, is older than he appears. However the fact that Britt herself is learning to handle abilities and problems does differentiate this work. Britt also shares her secrets with her girlfriends. Yelle gives us several degrees and varieties of angels - Eternals, half-angels, guardians, avengers, soulless.... it can be hard to keep track and a young reader might not bother. I also couldn't balance the romantic element, as the characters were soon leading far from normal lives.
Every person has a soul with a guardian angel to watch over it. Kind of like a personal bodyguard for your eternal spirit.
As Britt tries to end her life by going into the frigid waters she realizes her mistake. When Allister Parks finds Britt’s fragile body on the riverbank something calls out to him. Allister brings Britt back from the edge of death. Her very existence threatens Allister’s place in this world. Allister struggles to keep Britt a secret from the Eternal Council and out of the hands of the only Eternal who already knows the truth: the one who stole her guardian angel.
Taking Angels is full of mystery, drama, suspense, adventure, great characters like Angelina, Kendall, Bastion, Gabe and Britt's three amigos! The downside of this book is that everyone seems to fall in love with Britt but her heart only beats for one. At times this book reads like my diary when I met a boy and fell head-over-heels in love and was so over-the-top-dramatic - ugh! ... 'Was that why I loved Allister so much? Because he saved me?..."No, well, yes maybe partly. And because he loves me so completely. And I feel something when I'm with him I've never felt before. And I yearn for him when we're apart."
Ugh! I had to keep reminding myself that I used to be just like Britt, (I blush just reading my old diary entries) even though my now, jaded heart hates sappy love scenes.
All in all, this book is an intriguing read.
"Ok, so you're an Eternal. Good for you. I'm a Scorpio. What is that supposed to mean?"
"Great, not only am I a freak, I'm the freak of the freaks now?"
Britt is going to be a senior hi high school. . .if she makes it that long. The opening scene introduces a frail, sick girl, who is simply tired of fighting for her life. She's doomed to die anyway. This immediately draws at the heart-strings and as she takes her own life, it's easy to understand her point of view. From here, the story takes off.
Britt is a loving character, who has learned to value life and is ready to fight and survive whatever is thrown at her. But she's not all powerful and super strong in every way. She makes mistakes and portrays all the dramatic emotions of a 17-year old, and still, she manages to come through with flying colors. The great guy on her side seems obligatory, but he too was easy to love and sympathize with. Unlike many heroes, I found him true and loving and not over-bearing or too cliche.
I had no trouble diving into Britt's world and found myself wrapped up in her story from the very first page. There are always enough open questions, twists and turns to keep the pace going from one page to the next. Of course, the dark evil looming in the background kept a nice sense of mystery and suspense. At no time, did I feel as if I could predict what was going to happen.
Summed up, this is an enjoyable read, and I recommend it to all those paranormal romance lovers who like a nice dash of extraordinary powers and a little bit of suspense.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
