Jacob Rocke is a 'spook,' a private detective specially licensed by the government to look into 'unusual' situations. He's seen just about everything, so when a woman approaches him with a case involving a ghostly wolf, it seems like easy enough work. But dealing with the world of the unusual often isn't what it seems, and things quickly spiral into a mystery involving a menacing specter and dark magical arts threatening both him and his client.
One Drink is a novella of approximately 33,000 words, or roughly 100 pages.
Max Florschutz was born and raised in the wilds of southeast Alaska, on a little island that boasted both a large, lumber-based economy and one of the highest rainfalls to ever not be desired by humanity. In 2004 he began attending college at Brigham Young University Provo, taking a two-year break to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Upon his return, he continued to attend BYU Provo and began to delve heavily into English courses (among other things), including creative writing classes taught by authors such as Brandon Sanderson. Transferring out to BYU Hawaii to keep a promise, Max finished his degree, graduating in 2011 with more credits than most students would know what to do with and a 3.96 GPA.
After a year or so of the graduated life, the writing bug bit him again and he began to spend his free time writing once more. After a few months of making sure he still hadn’t lost his touch and some dedicated practice, he sat down and wrote his first publishable book: One Drink. Emboldened by the success of that release, he pushed forward, and has continued writing to this day.
Kindle freebie recommended by my nephew. I enjoyed this story of a modern day spook. Like most freebies or self-published books, it could use some editing and revising, but overall I liked it and the story. I did figure out who the necromancer was before Rocke, so that frustrated me a little, and the ending is bloody, but overall it's a fun read.
Really enjoyed the book, but the hints concerning the culprit were a little bit too obvious and some more character development would have been nice. Otherwise: I want more!
Mr. Florschutz has assembled an enjoyable read. It is high art, no. But I plowed through it in a sitting as it tickled all the right detective novel tropes I grew up loving to read.
I was new to this author but I won't hesitate to pick up more from him. This was entertaining and I liked the story. Paranormal is intriguing to me and "One Drink" did not disappoint. I really liked the main character and his friend. The others were developed enough for the story, but their lack of full development is what helped keep the story short. I was fine with that. If you want a quick read with some twists and some paranormal in it, this is a great book.
I had a lot of fun reading this story. Unlike a good number of mysteries I read, as the main character, Jacob Rocke, investigates a supernatural (or Unusual case as they are called in this world) the clues unfold for me and make sense as they do for him. It is nice to read a story that the main character doesn't put random clues together and jump ahead of any conclusions I might draw before I have put it together. It is quite refreshing.
Great afternoon read. I finished this book in just a few hours. Maybe that was only because it was not so long, maybe because it has great pacing, and characters, and a good story to boot. I recommend it to fans of supernatural detective novels in particular, but all fans of good supernatural fiction in general.
