A short read and I bought it because of a daily deal on Amazon.I completed the book not in 57 mins but in 114 mins. This book is divided into short chapters each for 1 life lesson. These lessons are culled up from various books and the experiences of the authors. The book lists the following ideas as life lessons -

- Make Time Stand still - Identify things that keep you engaged and absorbed and fill your life with many of these thingsat work and personal life.

- User fear to your advantage - Being conscious of your self doubts and confronting them to get ahead.

- Design your dream job - Motivation at work comes from activities that we get the most reward from. The 3 whys technique that the authors discuss here is really helpful.

- Quit your way to Success - Sometimes quitting is the best thing you can do to your career - I found this chapter the most engrossing as it spoke to me.

- Make a life list - Create a written list of things that you would like to do in life - Most people know this but the life lists are not yet created. Immediately upon reading this I created one and I have already started to feel better and getting excited!

- Think Backwards to get things done - When you make a goal, plan objectives from end goal backwards so that you know what little increments will get you there.

- Recharge your batteries - Separate periods of high performance with periods of rejuvenation. Both are important.

- Be an Ironman - Simply put, Thing big!... and craft big actions required to exceed them.

- Gather personal fortune of Experiences - Experiences are very important than possessing something. This really struck me hard and I immediately started thinking about my past decisions. It was experiences that I really valued most of the times.

-Celebrate small goals everyday.

- Don't label anything "Once in a Lifetime" - When you label something once in a lifetime, you create unreasonable expectations - Very true this!

- Listen to your mother - Be yourself.

- Live your life as a Story - Be Proactive and fill your life with different experiences. Just don't live your life the same year after year for 20-25 years!

If you are a fan of self help books, then you'd have come across many of the principles as they can be found scattered in many self help books. So, for you guys, this would be a short inspirational read or summary of many books which is what it was exactly for me. For those new to the genre of self help, this would be a good book to have.

57 Minutes is a short book of advice and insight for leading a more fulfilling life, one in the genre of "sustainable living" books. I dipped into it from time to time as I was exercising, or while sitting at red lights, or waiting in stores for my wife to finish. In fact, this is how I would recommend reading it...in short doses, with time in-between to reflect and apply as it moves you. While much of it is common sense, it doesn't hurt to be reminded now and again of what one should know. Some tidbits that seemed salient to me included:

1. Quitting is not the same as failing. For various reasons, quitting something before finishing might often be the wisest thing to do.

2. Having a "life list" could be an important part of getting the most out of your life. It helps you to define what success should like like for you, which you should not let others define for you. You should review it often to ensure that your actions are in alignment with what is most important to you. Again, though, as you progress through life, as your values and understandings evolve, there is nothing wrong with setting aside items from your life list that are no longer relevant or important to you.

3. Watch out for "inactivity traps."

4. Organize yourself...design for productive moments, and organize to create more of them. Some good examples for how to do that are found in the book.

5. Abandon the deferred life plan...life is for living now, not at some unspecified future date. "In the long run, experiences are much more satisfying than things."

6. Celebrate small wins. For most of us, the big wins only come once in a while, so don't wait to celebrate them...take joy in the small every day successes that ultimately lead to the great things. And celebrate them for others also!

7. Listen to your mother. Just be yourself...it's too hard to be someone else.

8. Reflect on, and learn from, your experiences. You can have twenty years of experience, or one year of experience repeated twenty times. It's your choice.

These were the bits of counsel that resonated most with me, but of course, YMMV. Read the book for yourself.
