This is a Cowboy Romantic Suspense, and this is the 5th book in the Soldier of Fortune series. I have not read the other books in this series before picking up this book. I listened to the audiobook for this book, and the narrator was not my favorite. This book has a great mix of romance and action/suspense. I really got pulled into the story, and I did not want to put this book down. This book did read old country, and it almost read like a historical fiction book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

The mercenary widower meets the shy pregnant widow and sparks fly.
Cy has been living a life free of responsibilities since his wife and kid passed away. When he finds his neighbor Walt is dead, and his sweet wife is all alone- he decided to help her out with the help of Eb and Harley and sparks fly.
Sweet love story, a marriage, some surprises and villains leading to a HEA.
Enjoyed this ending to the series.
Safe with minor exceptions

Walt a traía. Eu jamais a trairei. Abra a boca.

==> Sobre Harley<==

Cresci aprendendo a consertar coisas.

Cy Parks is my favorite hero amongst the three close ex-military/retired mercenary friends comprising of him, Eb Scott and Micah Steele in the Soldiers of Fortune series. I always found it so sexy how the three of them would soundlessly slip into danger zones in their all-black gear and take care of the situations. They were also the most revered by the heroes of DP's Long Tall Texan series and the people of Jacobsville.
Cy had helped a government agency get hard evidence against a drug lord, Lopez, while he was on his mercenary work. In retaliation, Lopez set his house in Wyoming on fire killing his wife and his five-year old son and leaving Cy with scars and a burned arm. He hadn't been close to his wife, whom he'd married mainly because of the fantastic sex between them. She deliberately got pregnant so that he quits his mercenary job and once he'd done that she was all set to abort the child, but on Cy's threat of taking away her credit cards, she went through the pregnancy. Cy was heartbroken over the loss of his son even after he'd found out that the boy wasn't even his. He moved to Jacobsville to be close to his friend Eb Scott, who'd recently got married.

Lisa and Walt Munroe were his neighbor and what little he saw of Walt's treatment of Lisa, how he made her do all the heavy work on the ranch while he flirted with women irritated him. Lisa was only twenty-one. When she lost her father, Walt, who worked undercover for the FBI and who'd been jilted by the woman he wanted to marry, married her on the rebound. Her ranch was what actually appealed to him. He found her boring and the two had sex only twice in their short two-month marriage -- on the wedding day itself after which he'd taken off for an assignment and a day before he was killed by Lopez's thugs whilst he was undercover to find information about Lopez. So, Lisa, who was a virgin, was left inexperienced in that matter. A mix up at the clinic led her to believe she was pregnant with her late husband's child.

Lisa was innocent and at times too naive. She believed in the best of everyone, good or bad, unlike Cy who has seen the worst in his thirty-five years of living. Because her father believed, ranch work wasn't for women, she was clueless how to run a ranch and was royally taken for a ride by the hired hands. The book starts with her and Cy arguing at the pharmacy over her naivety. Then Cy takes over and the two forge a friendship to overcome their loneliness. But, one kiss when they're out to the opera make them see that there's more to them than mere friendship.

Then, comes danger to Lisa from Lopez's men and in order to protect her, Cy moves her to his place, which make them the talk of the town. Another attack from Lopez's men has Cy proposing marriage to her, which she accepts even though disappointed it was going to be a marriage of convenience because what she feels with Cy she'd never felt for her late husband or any other man. Even, Cy's handsome foreman, Harley Fowler ---who I know has a book of his own much later in the Long Tall Texan series, but haven't read--- didn't make her feel like that despite being closer to her age.
Harley was funny. He always thought of Cy as crippled and barely fit to do ranch work and used to brag about his two-year commando training with the Army Rangers and his ability of taking on anyone who came at him with guns. It was amusing to see him struggling when he was held at gun-point and then stunned into speechlessness seeing his boss take down the two gunmen with two knives - the second knife in the air even before the first hit the target. I liked how Cy gradually grooms him to maturity.

Even though, Cy wants to make love to Lisa, he didn't want to put a risk to her pregnancy as she'd recently been cramping. He always thought it odd though that her body didn't show any signs of pregnancy. It didn't take long for the two of them to make love and his lack of control upsetted Cy. Add to it, he gets a big shock when he learns about the age difference between them from Eb. For, a while things did get sticky between them. I found his jealousy over Harley and Lisa's late husband, both younger guys, amusing.

I loved the scene between him and Lisa before he takes off on the mission to take on Lopez's men.

He sighed gently and smoothed back her disheveled hair. "I keep mixing you up with the past, when you're nothing like my late wife. I don't resent Walt's baby." He shrugged. "It's not the age difference, either, really. But you're young and I'm older than my years make me. Maybe you need someone closer to your own age."
"Someone like Harley?" she asked deliberately.
His face hardened and his eyes flashed dangerously. "No!"
Hope, almost deserted, began to twinkle in her eyes. "That's what I thought you said." She pulled his head down and kissed him tenderly. "I know you can take care of yourself. I've seen you do it. But don't take chances. I want to be married a very long time."
"You do?" he murmured.
"Yes. I'm not going back to Dad's ranch. If you won't let me live in the house, I'll live in the barn with Puppy Dog and Bob and tell everybody in Jacobsville that you won't let me live with you...."
He was kissing her again. It was sweet and heady, and he didn't have time for it at all. He just couldn't seem to stop. He was starting to ache and that would never do.
"And I'm moving into your bedroom while you're gone," she added, her voice thready with passion. "So there."
"Maybe I can think up an objection before I come back," he murmured against her
lips.
"You try to do that." She grinned.
He loosened her arms and put her gently away from him, his strong hands tight on her shoulders. "While I'm gone, stay in the house with the doors locked. I've got Nels on the front porch and Henry watching the back door. They're both armed. Stay away from the windows and don't answer the phone. You know where the spare pistol is," he added, and she nodded. "It's loaded."
She bit her lower lip, realizing from his demeanor how dangerous it would be for both of them. "Okay. I'll use it if I have to. But don't you let yourself get shot," she told him firmly.
"I know, come back with my shield or on it."
She smiled and nodded. "That's right. Because you're not a 'summer soldier' like Thomas Paine wrote about. You're a winter soldier, fighting through blizzards. But you have to come back to me in one piece."
"I'll do my best to oblige," he mused, smiling back. Her eyes were soft and dark. He almost got lost in them. His gloved hand came up to touch her flushed cheek. "What did I ever do in my life to deserve someone like you?" he asked in a breathlessly tender voice. He moved away from her before that softness captured him. "I'll be home when I can."
She put up a brave front. "Okay," she said, and without further protests.
He paused at the doorway for one long, last look at her. She was a hell of a woman. And he wasn't giving her up, whether or not it would have been for her own good. He read the same resolve in her own face. She didn't cry or complain or try to stop him. She stood there very bravely and kept smiling, even though her eyes were too bright to be normal. She was still standing there when he went out into the hall and disappeared.

I also found it very sweet when he tells his man who was watching her, "Guard her with your life." And, I loved the welcome Lisa gave him on his return, also the news of him being going to be a father. Despite the differences between the two, they were perfect for each other. I never expected the taciturn, man of steel to have such a sweet romantic story. I loved all the suspense and action too.

This is by far my most favorite book of the series.

I always felt myself perk up whenever Cy appeared in the following books.

I had a hard time getting past the idea that a girl raised on a ranch was so incompetent with everything to do with ranching. Plus she went between being a pretty big weenie, and moronically fearless, which is not the kind of heroine I prefer to read.

Also, what is up with these authors who write women who are so ignorant they can't tell if they're really pregnant and the man has to tell her?

Hero is a rather alpha guy, which I like, but you get to feeling a little skeevy about how he wants a woman who is virtually clueless.

This is one of my favorite Palmer stories. While it has most of her usual tropes; older, cynical alpha male meets much younger naive and innocent woman, Lisa and Cy are pretty sweeter together. Cy's not nearly as much of an ass as her usual heroes, and he accrual talks to Lisa and tells her about the dangers.

It's a Diana Palmer were the heroine is not a virgin! And she is pregnant and was married. Yes it was just not very good. I don't hate it but the heroine was wishy washy. The hero was not horrible just the typical Diana Palmer ass. Not a favorite but not the worst.

Winter Soldier is my first book in Diana Palmer's mini-series entitled Soldier of Fortune. And Cy Parks has been in many of her previous books. And I've always been intrigued by his character; that's why I was pretty excited to finish this one.

Cy Parks, a former mercenary, a professional soldier for hire to the highest bidder lost his wife and son years ago when Manuel Lopez, a drug lord, had Cy's house set on fire as an act of revenge. He knew that Lopez has a reputation for killing all those who try to bring him down or betray him and their families. And when his men killed Walt Monroe, an undercover agent who happened to be his neighbor, Cy realizes that Lisa, Walt's widow, might be in danger.

Lisa Monroe, finds herself pregnant, widowed, and in debt. When her formidable and taciturn neighbor, Cy Parks, offers her help, she's thankful. But she didn't expect that they will find comfort in each other's company. As passion begins to build, an attempt on her life's continued, and Cy decided to keep an eye on her and make sure nothing happens to her. And getting married is the best way to do that.

I loved Cy and Lisa. They were such wonderful and endearing characters. I really enjoyed getting to know both of them. Cy Parks. *sigh* I loved him. I do. He's such a wonderful hero. My heart hurt for him. He'd lost so much. But I'm glad it didn't make him an asshole who treats the heroine poorly. In fact, he's the complete opposite. Cy's quite a gentleman. He's tough, but at heart, he's a big ol' softie. I loved how he took care of Lisa. I'd let him take care of me anytime!

Lisa was such a strong heroine. She's brave, honest, and loyal. And she gave as good as she got. She stood up for herself and didn't let Cy walk all over her. She isn't afraid to jump right and not afraid to speak her mind. She was exactly what Cy needed. They suit each other quite well.

I also liked that there's no insta lust/love between the characters. They started as friends, and eventually, their relationship grew into something more. There are also lots of sweet and tender moments between Cy and Lisa that made me smile.

Overall, Winter Soldier was such a delightful read filled with non-stop action, two wonderful characters with definite chemistry, sigh-worthy romance. In short, very entertaining!

Sementara Harlequin harganya mahal. Jadi.. You know what I mean, lah. :)

This one is about Cy Parks, a name that comes up again and again in The Long, Tall Texan series. It's surprisingly low-angst with an openly besotted hero and an equally frank heroine.

The romance is a secondary focus from the drug cartel that is operating in Jacobsville. In fact, the last chapter centers around the kidnapping of another heroine (which will be resolved in a later story). The H/h are sidelined to billing and cooing, which is not a complaint. It was nice to see an H/h with a fairly standard courtship/relationship.

The eyebrow-raising details are that the heroine is a widow of two weeks when she encounters the hero who offers a ride home from the pharmacy. They live next door to each other. Heroine thinks she's pregnant from her brief marriage to a mercenary who just wanted her for her family ranch. She's not upset by his death (lol) - and she's looking forward to a baby. Hero's family was killed as revenge from *his* work as a mercenary - so he's concerned about her.

The marry "for heroine's protection" - even though it's been a few weeks since they first talk. It's just that they're wildly attracted to each other. They talk it out and - boom - now DP can write that adventure novel she's always wanted to write.

If you're good with a low-conflict romance and lots of gun battles, you'll love this one.

Diana Palmer checklist:
Hairy chest Heroine is focused on his broad shoulders
Breast Description Small, mauve tipped. Not swollen from pregnancy
Cigarettes No .
Alcohol No. What’s happening?
Town Descriptions Lawyer's office will heroine will work as a receptionist (lawyer is another DP hero), Methodist church fellowship hall, courthouse, pharmacy, live oak in Jacobsville square.
Gardenia Scent No
LOL detail Mercenaries, Special Forces, Texas Rangers all live in Jacobsville, but drug cartels continue to set up shop there.
Cutesy detail Boy named Sue, dog named Puppy Dog.

Diana did such a beautiful job with this story, The winter soldier! I couldn't wait until I read both to share this one with you all. A very sweet, western romance. Light on the heart and sure to have you swoon.
If you like: light hearted love stories, family building, possessiveness, age gap tropes, westerns, or green eyes you'll fall head over boots for this one.

4.5/5 🌟

Tw: light mention of death, loss, drugs, cheating/affairs, + age gap.

Summary:
*A very sweet and short read!
*Light hearted romance. *Recommended for a quick grab.
*Age gap trope
*Past trauma, drugs, cheating, & death. *4/5

The Winter Soldier by Diana Palmer is a compelling addition to the Soldiers of Fortune series. Set in the rugged backdrop of Jacobsville, Texas, the story introduces Cy Parks, a taciturn loner, and Lisa Monroe, a spirited young woman who isn't intimidated by Cy's formidable presence. Their unexpected union, born out of necessity to protect Lisa from a vengeful adversary, evolves into a passionate and heartfelt romance.

Palmer masterfully weaves themes of duty, sacrifice, and the transformative power of love. The characters' journey from strangers to soulmates is both touching and exhilarating. The narrative's blend of suspense and romance keeps readers engaged, making it a must-read for fans of contemporary Western romance.

Lisa and Cy

Lisa is a very young woman recently widowed after 2 months of marriage. Her cop husband was murdered after trying to infiltrate a notoriously dangerous drug lord that is swift and lethal and she finds herself targeted when he wants to make at example out of her, eliminating not only the offender but his family as well. Cy is a ex soldier of fortune that established himself as a rancher in Jacobsville, searching for peace after loosing his family in a fire. This is not a passionate love affair but a slow burner that has a very tender passion that will stay with you for a while. Highly recommended

This is old school suspense romance. Enjoyed the story of ex-mercenary who is drawn back into the business. First for revenge for the death of his wife and child. Secondly to protect the recently widow neighbor who is in the crosshairs of the cartel who just murdered her husband. Good storyline that had me finishing the audiobook in one day. This is a part of a series but I never would have known, except for the part at the end that was a little like a reunion. Thank you #NetGalley for this ARC, all opinions expressed are my own. #TheWinterSoldier

Setting: neighboring ranches in Jacobsville, Texas; the small town community of Jacobsville

Theme:
Finding Peace; falling in love; children; settling; protection

Characters:
Cy Cyrus Jonathan Parks: 36; ex-military for hire, for good causes; tough, with scars to prove it; tried marriage to woman sexually compatible with, but she saw other men when he was away and had another man’s baby - one Cy insisted she have instead of an abortion, because he wanted a child; operation led to drug cartel Lopez’ arrest, and he sent men to burn down his house, killing his wife and 5 year old son; he burned his arm badly when trying to rescue family; put away a lot of money, bought a ranch in Texas – perceived to be standoffish, crippled, sauvy; verbally confronted neighbor when he observed him flirting with a delivery gal while his wife was pitchforking hay; visits woman in nursing home whom he bought the ranch from (kind hearted)

Lisa Taylor Monroe: 21; raised on a ranch and can do a lot but father kept her away from ranch management; all she wants is to be a home builder with children; father died, and Walt proposed, she said yes, expecting love would come; Walt made love to her on her wedding night, and once 2 months later – and told her she was a boring virgin – and slept in another room when he was home; when he was killed, 2 weeks later she found out she was pregnant; she is overwhelmed with the ranch – neither her father nor Walt kept it up, and Walt borrowed against his insurance so there was not money there; she can’t get the part time hands to do much of a job…

Walt Monroe: undercover drug cop – married Lisa on impulse on the rebound from his ‘true love’; wanted to make the ranch a going concern, but didn’t have the expertise and made things worse; killed by Lopez when trying to infiltrate his cartel – and Lopez is known for going after the family of those who betray him… Lisa and unborn baby at risk.

Ebenezer and Sally Scott: - partnered with Cy and Micah – but now he’s settled down happily with Sally on his own ranch; keeping an eye on Lopez’ activity in the area… comes out to play to defend Lisa and to take down Lopez – the last book?

Micah Steele and Callie Kirby: Micah the third… he’s still most involved with military life… Callie was his step sister, she had a crush on him, he was unkind to her… and when he refused to kiss her on her 16th? 18th? Birthday, and ran into her conniving mother in the hall who thought he was hot and bothered about her and she wrapped herself around him and was caught by his father and Callie before he could extricate himself… his father divorced and has refused to talk to him since… Callie is taking care of his father (her mother left town) and is still hurt and angry with him… this story ends with a threat against Callie and his father by Lopez… he warns Callie, and she is kidnapped 10 minutes later… the next book must be her rescue.

Summary:
Lisa and Cy know of each other even though they have exchanged few words… he insists on driving her home from town, and it is the beginning of a friendship – he is fascinated with her guilelessness and gentleness, she is fascinated with his sad eyes and deep voice… they are honest with one another, sharing with one another things not shared with others… and Cy is worried for her safety… and sends his own man over to sleep in bunkhouse at night… to sending his men over to do the work her men aren’t doing (mowing down the hay and corn for the winter/cattle)… and then to buy her ranch, and rent her the house… they also agree to have dinners together regularly, and she asks him to be her baby’s godfather…

They exchange a few heated kisses… he is confused by his feelings, that go beyond attraction and protection… when Lopez finally makes a move on her, he is there to protect her (his man called him)… and he takes her into his home to protect her… a few more kisses and he asks her to marry him, at least until the Lopez threat is gone… he makes passionate love to her on the wedding afternoon – and scares himself, and then starts to notice that she doesn’t have any symptoms of pregnancy – breasts, morning sickness, etc. He doesn’t want to tie her to him with his own baby, and he is scared in general of his growing feelings for her… so he institutes a hands off policy… confusing her… but when he is jealous around his foreman flirting with her, she sees his feelings… and tells him she’s not leaving… she’ll sleep in the barn if he doesn’t want her in the house…

And they discover Lopez’s plan to move cocaine… they gather against him, she tells him to come home safe… and he does, though Lopez found out they were coming (leak somewhere) and isn’t there himself… and she goes to the doctor to confirm she’s pregnant… and then returns for an ultrasound and to get questions answered… and she is not having Walt’s baby (he had a vasectomy and they got the first blood tests mixed up)… she is pregnant with Cy’s baby from their wedding afternoon… ahhhh
Memorable scenes:
“He proposed a marriage of convenience, which was interesting when he considered how quckly he’d maneuvered her into bed with the flimsiest of excuses. Abstinence alone wouldn’t have caused huger that sweeping. He didn’t understand his sudden lack of restraint…”

Sebenarnya bagus. Banyak adegan action Cy Parks sama timnya meringkus penjahat narkoba. Chemistrynya sama Lisa Tailor lumayanlah. tapi apa ya ... hm, ya udah tiga bintang aja cukup. Wkwk.

Fast-paced and a heroine with gumption

I enjoyed the fast pace and suspense of the story. I also appreciated this heroine was more outspoken than some of Palmer's other heroines. A tough but sweet and caring hero who pulls himself from solitude to be around the heroine. Suprising twists and background stories made this a very enjoyable read.

Another great story by Diana Palmer. I liked the characters and the push/pull that happened between the two main characters. The narrator did a good job but sometimes I wish they would have both male and female narrators to do the male and female parts of the story instead of having the male narrator try to sound like a female. All iin all it was a very enjoyable story to listen to.

Excitement with danger

Excitement with danger added to an unusual romance to prove that determination and effort can overcome obstacles. Read and reread to be sure I hadn't missed anything.

Heartwarming and suspenseful

Just a little predictable, but still worth reading for us Diana Palmer fans. Pathos and villains with romance grounded in friendship growing in each chapter. Well written with enough twists to keep you reading.

This novel was surprisingly good. It didn’t seem too buried in the era it was written. I didn’t appreciate the cliffhanger ending and to back to find and read the sequel which wasn’t nearly as good.
