Bachelor Chronicles #7

Cautivada por el duque

Rate this book

Elinor Standon hires the rough looking man in her foyer to help her find a duke to marry. James Tremont, the rough looking duke in her foyer agrees because something something boners. Eventually he realizes that the reason none of the other dukes are good enough is because he's the only duke good enough or something.

1. While I respect that this is part of a series, it really irks me when an author doesn't make the individual novels accessible--especially in a series where the books all focus on different couples. Why were the Standon widows banished to a ramshackle old house? Why were they considered so nefarious? What exactly did Elinor's husband do that was so bad? What was going on with Lucy and Clifton? What else am I missing? Why do I have so many questions?

2. I did not realize James was meant to be a 40+ year old man until waaaaay too late in the book. (Ditto for the age of his daughter holy arithmetic batman.)

3. Having your heroine (and/or hero) physically react to their own internal monologue is awkward.

4. Also, having your heroine (and/or hero) routinely drift into daydreams, while cute at first, quickly grows old when it happens multiple times in the same chapter. Or page.

5. I don't even like them and I wish there had been an epilogue.

No rating since this book has been languishing on my shelf for as long as I can remember and I'm finally getting rid of it. Why? Because despite it's beautiful cover, I don't want to read it. I just started it and it reads exactly the same as Felicity's book. A woman who "needs" to marry a peer sees the hero, misinterprets his clothing, and assumes he is of a lower class. But he is a duke. And he is attracted to the heroine--so he goes along with it. And then the ruse gets so complicated that it may ruin their love. That's exactly how Love Letters from a Duke went. And since I didn't like that one all that well, I'm retiring this one. I may attempt the Lord Langley one when I'm in the mood for some crazy caper story, but overall, after really enjoying her really early book, The Rake is Mine, and a sweet novella in Four Weddings and a Sixpence, I haven't found much of her plots that fit with my tastes. I think she has a taste for screwball comedy and large casts of characters whereas I enjoy character-driven, slow burn romances that feel more like everyday life. Just a note to self to only carefully select Boyle's works in the future--paying close attention to reviews and blurbs.

I listened to the audiobook. This is a re-read... 3rd or 4th time I've read/listened to this book. It's one of my favourites I have a soft spot for the pompous arrogant hero who falls hard and has to figure it all out. Never has a poor jacket been so maligned. I do suggest reading the series in order, they are all much fun to read.

Lately I`m in the mood for Historical Romances. When I stumbled across this novel, I had to read it. It sounded cute, witty and promising.
I haven`t read the first six novels in the series, but each are mostly stand alone novels,( from what I`ve read)so I was safe.

As Characters go, I was in love with James character.
I`ve read so many fantastic male characters lately, but he really was one to remember. He`s handsome, smart, kind and has a witty personality.
He was always the more poise, stern brother, but the tables have turned once he meets Lady Elinor Standon. She takes his breath away, and honestly his common sense as well.

Lady Elinor Standon is a great character. She`s your typical naive female from the Victorian age, but with spunk and charm. I loved her. She was kind, sweet and fun. Her younger sister Tia was a favorite for me. The little one was a charmer! One for the books for sure!

As stories go, I really enjoyed ”Mad About The Duke”. Twists, love, deceit and charm. It was a historical romance I was glad to find!

Elinor, one of the notorious Stanton widows, needs to marry a duke to gain custody of her sister from her unscrupulous uncle. She enlists the help of a certain "Mr. St.Maur," whom she thinks is a solicitor, when in reality St.Maur is James Tremont, the Duke of Parkerton.
James, who sought to enlighten Elinor to his actual status, decides not to tell in order to get to know her better, and to submit his own name forward as a potential husband.

What comes next is a series of hilarious meetings, coincidences, and ultimately a happily-ever-after for Elinor and James, as James found a person whom he could love again, and Elinor her duke.

While this is a joyful book that made me laugh out loud many times while reading, I must admit to want more instance of actual love in the story. James was hit head-on with love, or more likely lust, the moment he sees Elinor, and Elinor kept on commenting on how manly Mr. St.Maur is. There is no instance of the two actually falling in love with each other beyond a a visceral level, and no growth in affection between the two either that is on an intellectual level.

Final words: This is a fun, simple read that will crack out the laughter in you, but if you want to read something that touches deep in your heart, I would suggest books by Anna Campbell, Mary Balogh, and Carla Kelly.

This book was just ok for me. One problem is I didn't read the previous one in the series so I started from behind. But EB didn't do much to bring me up to speed and some of the details I was not even sure pertained to the other book. We came into the story with James having been in a fight. About what? and over who? I think it was about his daughter, but am not sure. She never gave us the details over anything. It just got referred to through the entire book.

Elinor's husband, he was so terrible, but yet we get few details as to how he was terriable, it was all just inferences and dangling sentences. I just didn't have the background on the sister's enough. Everybody said that the Standon widows were bad news, but what made them bad news? They seemed ok to me. James was there the apologize when the misunderstanding started, but I never knew what exactly he was there to apologize to Lucy for. None of it made sense. It was like I walked into a middle of a play and everybody knew what was going on but me.

I can't fault the writing - Boyle is a great writer of fluffy, banter-laden Regency comedic romances. But this book drove me to distraction thanks to its reliance on one of my least-favorite romantic comedy tropes of all time. If a plot would cease to happen if one or more characters spoke three words to each other at the beginning of the story, then chances are you should probably find a more substantial plot to hang your story on. The central conceit was stretched past the point of breaking, to the point where I found both main characters fairly idiotic. There are many better Regencies out there, I would not recommend this one.

I could respect the frivolity. It's a frothy cutesy book. The plot line is ridiculous - the characters nearly slapstick. A woman asks a man (not realizing he's a duke) to help her find a duke for a husband. He drags the charade on and on and on and on all while denying he has feelings for her. Totally adorable little story for 100 pages - anything after that was redundant. The book lost any argument at authenticity and became satire as the ruse dragged on. He's a duke. Like a bazillion people would recognize him. Also, she wants a duke husband but makes no effort to hang out with anyone but this guy. Silly.

I enjoyed this very much!
It was an intriguing story, it was hilarious at times and had an overall good flow.
I enjoyed the writing and the story itself.
Parkerton was exceedingly funny, without trying to be.

A light, fun story, with lots of side-characters, making the story come together.
Wasn't the most steamy of books - but the writing and the banter made up for it, imo.

An enjoyable story of mistaken identity, but this does not work well as a standalone. I had read none of the preceding novels, so spent the first 70 pages or so in complete confusion.

I liked it that the hero/heroine were older than the typical HR.

The plot was too similar to one of my favourites from Ms. Boyle's, 'Love Letters from a Duke.' It was the same concept, so I wasn't sure why she would do another book like this.

Two well-paired, charismatic leads, but where is the story?! Truly a skill in of itself, I wish I possess this power to fill pages about almost nothing, when I was writing my essays in high school.

I should've anticipated the bare-bone plot when an ill-fitted jacket is elevated as such an important story element, being a major conversation focus with every single character throughout the first 100+ pages of this 346 pages novel.

Elizabeth Boyle's lively, addictive writing style kept me going, and the two leads definitely possess romantic spark; the novel comes alive every time the two come together—even though the 'mistaken identity' trope implemented here is built upon such weak conceit (literally everyone knows the truth except for the naive heroine, who simply couldn't figure it out until the last 20 pages).

Mad about the Duke definitely benefits from reading the seires in order, as the first chapter seems to pick up immediately after a previous event. If you're like me, jumping in without prior knowledge, beware the book doesn't recollect character backstories. It doesn't bother me too much, but the story will definitely resonate more with prior knowledge.

Super fun in spots, but hollow overall; I wouldn't mind continuing check out Elizabeth Boyle's work (thanks to her skilled writing), but need a recommendation for a plot-driven book of hers; because reading 300+ pages only about the girl stubbornly ignoring hints, and the guy's countless monologues about falling head over heels, is pretty ridiculous.

Having said that, I'm actually a little curious about the 'origin story' of the character Jack Tremont, which is apparently told in Book 2, This Rake of Mine.

BONUS ➵ Chapter Notes

CH1
p.2 The female lead is already in love with the stranger in front of her, proclaiming 'the right man could make a lady's night heavenly.' Definitely not wasting any time here
p.4 What's up with me picking books featuring animal birth!? First a horse in Eloisa James' The Taming of the Duke, and now a greyhound is having 6 puppies—you bet I'm going to YouTube that right now—learning so much about animal life cycle through historical romance
p.12 hullabaloo (means 'commotion'), new word to me; and as a graphic designer who looks at letters all day, that's a very handsome looking sequences of alphabet.
p.18 'Even if it was a situation, deserving of italics and emphasis'—I like the breaking the fourth wall writing there

E haja risos.

A person does not read HR to get tortured but that's apparently what some writers have in their mind.

The whole book was filled with utter nonsense.
The thing that made me really lose it was the Duke and his servants. At the end how could he make that stupid love sick speech instead of giving them a good thrashing for putting him and his beloved bi*** in jeopardy. They could have flipping died (which would have been a blessing) and all he says to them is that he knows they have his best interest at heart? Really? What crap. They didn't have his best interests they didn't want him to get married so the house keeper could keep on running the house and the other servants wouldn't have to follow any orders either.

Just giving my honest (if somewhat angry) opinion is all.

Another Boyle book that was just okay for me. I liked the premise and the sale price tag on Amazon so I decided to try it. James was my favorite part since I adore stuffy heroes who have a soft spot for the heroine. I do wish we had gotten more about his early marriage since it was obvious that it had a huge effect on his personality. Elinor got on my nerves at various times. I understood her dilemma and her reasons for finding a rich husband, but there was something about her that left me cold. A fairly well-written story that kept me entertained for the most part.

Another series I am reading out of order. Now I must go find the rest! My favorite part about this book is that the Hero is a 40 year old widower and the heroine a 30 year old widow who needs to marry a Duke. She had a list, and through good old mistaken identity-the 40 year old Duke (who she thinks is a solicitor) is not on the list because she thinks he is too old! He is so offended and says "But that is my age" and she is so surprised. Many adventures later, guess what they realize their love and i assume live happily ever after (which we may find out in book 8)
