The Japan Rookie King Tournament has finally concluded, and as Ippo ponder what lies beyond his healing fist, the answers in form of the meeting of the current Champion, Date Eiji. He has the aura of a champion and Ippo is surprised to have met what might eventually be his new goal. Eiji asks if Ippo would be interested in sparring with him once his fist heals, and that, folks, is the the new road that lies ahead for our little protagonist.
The homophobic content here was so off putting. I’m sure fans forget about this sort of stuff but man it’s so bad. Besides that this is just us meeting the champ in Ippo’s class and Ippo gets an admirer. Very bad volume, the ensemble wins some fights but we don’t go in depth with it.

A pretty busy volume. Ippo's match with Sendoh unexpectedly ends when Sendoh can't get up for the next round. It turns out Ippo had knocked him unconscious with a right to the temple and that Sendoh had been fighting while unconscious. Back in Tokyo, Ippo finally graduates from high school. The ceremony was very cute, as that everyone in the cheer enthusiastically cheered for him when he received his diploma, thanks to his recent success as a boxer. Then many of his peers asked for pictures with him, which Umezawa gladly took. Umezawa walked him part of the way home and struggled with himself to apologize to Ippo for his past bullying and to tell him how much he admires him. In the end, Umezawa is unable to say it, but he does promise always to cheer for Ippo and attend all his matches. After they part, Ippo encounters Miyata, who also just graduated and had been looking for him. Miyata informs him that he will be leaving Japan for a while, to box in Thailand and Korea, and that he'll be back when he's covered the gap between them. The next day, there are many new applicants at the boxing club, thanks to the success of the four boxers there. However, only one remains after Takamura drags them all out for roadwork, a high school student who is Ippo's fan and vomits all over him after the run, earning himself the nickname Barf-michi. Ippo helps train him. At Takamura's match, Ippo meets Eiji Date for the first time, the featherweight champion who invites him to spar when his fist has healed. As soon as Ippo's fist heals, he is invited to Eiji's dojo. The volume concludes with him and Barf-michi at the dojo, having been ditched by Takamura who remembered on the way there that he had a date that day.
A nice volume. When I watched the anime, I was really annoyed by Barf-michi and dreaded him being around for long, but now that I know what happens to him, I find the scenes with him charming. I also found the scene at the beginning of the volume hilarious, recounting how just before the four of them were going to enter an H establishment to celebrate Ippo's victory, the pain killers in Ippo's hand wore off and they had to rush him back to the doctor.

Really love Hajime no ippo!! Easily my favorite sports manga/anime, it’s a lot more than just the boxing! Great character development and story outside the sports part!😁👌🥊🥊❤️
