Outsider, Insider is the story of the life of Andrew Heiskell. Born in Naples, Italy of expatriate parents, he spent a nomadic childhood with his family in hotels across Europe. He did not go to school until he was ten, and never graduated from college. Heiskell arrived in the U.S. at age 20, at the height of the Depression. He began his publishing career as a medical editor forLife magazine in 1937 and ended up running the company from 1960 - 1980.

He originated the idea for People, one of this century's most successful magazines. For 14 years he was married to glamorous movie star Madeleine Carroll, then for the last 34 years to Marian Sulzberger Dryfoos, sister of Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, then the publisher of The New York Times.

Heiskell became a pre-eminent figure in the nonprofit world, playing leadership roles at Harvard, the New York Public Library, the Urban Coalition, the Enterprise Foundation and many other organizations. At age 83 he is still very active in this field.
