About the author

Adonis was born Ali Ahmed Said in the village of Al Qassabin in Syria, in 1930, to a family of farmers, the oldest of six children. At the age of nineteen, he adopted the name Adonis (also spelled Adunis), after the Greek god of fertility, with the hopes that the new name would result in newspaper publication of his poems.

Although his family could not afford to send Adonis to school, his father taught him to read poetry and the Qu'ran, and memorize poems while he worked in the fields. When he was fourteen, Adonis read a poem to the president of Syria who was visiting a nearby town. The impressed president offered to grant a request, to which the young Adonis responded that he wanted to attend school. The president quickly made arrangements for Adonis to attend a French-run high school, after which he studied philosophy at Damascus University.

In 1956, after a year-long imprisonment for political activities, Adonis fled Syria for Beirut, Lebanon. He joined a vibrant community of artists, writers, and exiles in Beirut, and co-founded and edited Sh'ir, and later Muwaqaf, both progressive journals of poetry and politics. He studied at St. Joseph University in Beirut and obtained his Doctorat d'Etat in 1973.

Considered one of the Arab world's greatest living poets, Adonis is the author of numerous collections, including Mihyar of Damascus (BOA Editions, 2008), A Time Between Ashes and Roses (Syracuse University Press, 2004); If Only the Sea Could Sleep (2003); The Pages of Day and Night (2001); Transformations of the Lover (1982); The Book of the Five Poems (1980); The Blood of Adonis (1971), winner of the Syria-Lebanon Award of the International Poetry Forum; Songs of Mihyar the Damascene (1961), Leaves in the Wind (1958), and First Poems (1957). He is also an essayist, an editor of anthologies, a theoretician of poetics, and the translator of several works from French into Arabic.

Over the course of his career, Adonis has fearlessly experimented with form and content, pioneering the prose poem in Arabic, and taking a influential, and sometimes controversial role in Arab modernism. In a 2002 interview in the New York Times, Adonis declared: '"There is no more culture in the Arab world. It's finished. Culturally speaking, we are a part of Western culture, but only as consumers, not as creators."

Adonis's awards and honors include the first ever International Nâzim Hikmet Poetry Award, the Syria-Lebanon Best Poet Award, and the Highest Award of the International Poem Biennial in Brussels. He was elected as Stephen Mallarme Academy Member in Paris in 1983. He has taught at the Lebanese University as a professor of Arabic literature, at Damascus University, and at the Sorbonne. He has been a Lebanese citizen since 1961 and currently lives in Paris.

_هو أن تحقق شيئاً لم يُحقق سابقاً،
بطريقة لم تُستخدم سابقاً،
ونتائج غير منتظرة.
الكتابة هي، إذاً، تحديداً: تجريب.

Besides being one of the most important Arab poets of the 20th century, Adunis is arguably the most important Arabophone poet living and working today. He was one of the handful of poets to initiate a modernist wave in the production of Arabic poetry, influencing this numerous poets who came after him. In this book, Water Alone Is Not an Answer to Thirst, we clearly see his well known style and how the classical norms of Arabic poetry aren't followed. In a confessional method, Adunis uses poetry to convey daily life moments, focusing more on making the language flow seem more natural, like normal speech. He reflects upon his life, his constant roaming around and not having a true "home", and reflects upon the current status of Arabic culture between traditionalism and modernism. So in the end, to anyone interested in discovering more and more from modern Arabic poetry, passing by Adunis is a must.

شعرت بالإطراء صراحة لأنه عربي

لم يعجبني الكتاب، والمشكلة الرئيسية هي عدم الفهم، كنت أقف لأفكر في معنى الجملة وحتى بعد
التفكير لا أصل إلى شيء
الشعر ربما لا يقرأ هكذا، ربما يكفي أن يكون جميلا
وهل كان هذا جميلا؟ ربما، قليلا

أدونيس أدونيس ، ليس الماء وحده جواباً عن العطش ، عن أي عطش تتحدث دكتور ( طبعاً أدونيس حائز على درجة الدكتوراة من جامعة الروح القدس / الكسليك : لبنان ، تحت إشراف الأب بولس نويّا و كان عنوان بحثه : الثابت و المتحوّل ). عودة إلى عطشك و عطشي وعطشه ، بداية لم يكن الأمر بعيداً عن عطش الحب، عطش الحنان و المودة ، لكن و لأنّ أدونيس يعلم تماماً من أين تؤكل الكتف فقد آلى على نفسه أن يمزج السياسة بالاجتماع بالحب في خلطة سحرية تمنعك من تفويت سطر شعري واحد و لا يمكن بالطبع القيام بتقييم موضوعي لما كتبه أدونيس دون دراسة موّسعة خاصة و أنّ مرجعيّات الشاعر الثقافية متعددة، أدونيس يمتح من معين الدين و الثراث و الفلسفة و الجسد ، يبقى الجسد هاجساً خاصاً به يعلم كل مَن يتعاطون الشأن الشعري أن الجسد محور الوجود و ليست الروح، في هذا يقول في مجموعته :
" إن كانت الروح تكره الجسد
فلماذا لا تقيم إلا فيه ؟
تتساءل العاشقة ، و لا تنتظر جواباً
تساؤل العاشقة مثلاً يوحي بسؤال بيلاتوس عن الحقيقة و تصاممه عن سماع الإجابة، تلك الحالة التي تطرح السؤال في محاولة حثيثة لنفيه أو قلبه.
يشتغل النص الأدونيسي على عة مستويات أعتقد أن أهم ما يشغله هو طرح الأسئلة من قبيل سؤال بيلاتوس مثلاً لكنه معنيّ في لغته الشعرية التي تنثال بانسيابية عزّت على معظم شعراء الحداثةأن ينزع أغلال الإنسان و إلا فما الذي يفسر استحضار تناصات تاريخية مع سيزيف أو مع هيباتيا فيلسوفة الإسكندرية التي نكّل بها باسم الرب مثلاً ، يقول أدونيس في مكان آخر ( في صوفيتي ، تعطى الأهمية المباشرة و القصوى للجسد بوصفه مثولاً متّصلاً مباشراً بالأشياء. و بالعالم ، و بالنور . يقول أحد الصوفيين : من أجل بلوغ اللامرئي ، أي الله ، لا بد من المرور بالجسد . وأكّد على الجسد الأنثوي.لأنّ العالم الذي لا يؤنّث لا يعوّل عليه ).
الجسد إذن المَعلم الأول على طريق الحقيقة ، لا يمكن الوصول إلى الله إن لم تتحد بالحبيب اتحاداً كلياً كما قال الحلّأج ذات مرة " أحبّك البعض مني و قد ذهبت بكلي " ذلك هو الوصول الحقيقي أن يصبح الحبيب كلك تماماً ، أن تقترن به اقتراناً حسياً بالدرجة الأولى ، يقول أدونيس : لا تعرف شفتاه كيف تنتميان إليه إلا عندما تنطبقان على شفتيها ، إن هذا ليس هذراً ووحده الغبي و ضيق الأفق مَن يصنف هذا الكلام في خانة " قلة الأخلاق " ، ذلك الشعر الملك الذي لايقيم وزناً إلا للذة للجمال لحب و الإنسانية ، و تبقى الأنثى هي الأصل ( اسم كتاب لنوال السعداوي ) تبقى الأصل لأنها الأرض و الحياة و الرحم و الاحتضان الوارف لحماقات الآخر ، أي آخر.
ختاماً طبعاً يستحق كتاب أدونيس النجمات الخمس و هو يكاد يضاهي الشعراء العالميين في طروحاته اللغوية ( أدونيس رشح لجائزة نوبل و يكفيه ذلك فخراً و إنّ لم يحصل عليها).

I do not think I understood most of this book. But from the things I understoond, it's very humanistic, and brilliantly vivid and eloquent. Adonis' prose did not appeal to me at first, but it grew on me the more I read, and I love his style.

At first, I expected it to be a bit like T.S. Eliot's mixture of prose and poetry, but it isn't. It's pure prose, filled with wordplay, magnificent imagery, and downright historical depiction of our current generation. Beautiful.
