nije čudo da houellebecq nije želio sudjelovati u pisanju ove biografije (tj. uvjet kojeg je on sam postavio - da demonpionov tekst slijede njegove bilješke, autor je odbio) – ovaj bućkuriš zapravo ne bi trebao niti biti u direktnoj vezi s houellebecqom. autor, inače novinar, dao si je truda pa za rukave vukao sve osobe koje su bile u nekom kontaktu s houellebecqom da bi od njih dobio materijal za zadovoljiti vlastitu fascinaciju ovim ekscentričnim francuzom i da bi sve to, nevješto i kritično lošim stilom upakirao u knjigu, upravo nekako u vrijeme najvećeg houellebecqova uspona.

Especially if one does not read critically, this unauthorised biography-so-far of Michel Houellebecq can pass for reading worthy. It’s a journalist’s writing. On itself there’s nothing wrong with journalism, but this has more of a ‘tabloid in the wrong sense of the word smelly’. Demonpion has done his research, he has spoken to many people, mainly former colleagues, former students, former high school classmates, former employers and people of and surrounding his family a.s.o., I mean etcetera. What he deduces from this wide range of conversations and interviews, is an understanding of Houellebecq’s behaviour, his character, and almost on the side he relates elements of his private life to fragments in his novels. I have got the feeling Demonpion keeps going in circles, lost in details, telling a song with far more refrains than verses and with not much distinction between ‘m – how unclear do you want a biography to be. The paradox as I have noticed, is: from this biography you get a sense that the person Thomas and the author Houellebecq have a much higher quality level than this his very biography. JM

De journalist en zijn boek zijn een treffend voorbeeld waarom hedendaagse Franse schrijvers het minder goed doen in het buitenland; zij schrijven voor een in-crowd, waardoor je een deel van de groep moet zijn om te kunnen volgen en eerlijk gezegd zijn die groepen toch nooit zo interessant dat je wil kunnen volgen.

Deze biografie brengt je niet veel verder dan een paar trivia die als weetjes in een quiz kunnen dienen. Het is veeleer een journalistieke uitwerking, die inderdaad zeer gericht is op het Franse publiek. Daardoor best wat voorkennis nodig over het Franse literaire bedrijf.
Wel nog eens zin gekregen om 'Platform' te herlezen.

Nie jestem fanką tej książki. Odebrałam ją jako dosyć nieżyczliwą Houellebecq'owi. Nie sądzę, że jest on postacią, o której da się pisać wyłącznie w superlatywach, ale znacznie bardziej pociagałaby mnie możliwie obiektywna biografia bez uszczypliwości. Odniosłam wrażenie, że Demonpion zatrzymał się gdzieś pomiędzy obiektywizmem a poleganiem na historiach znajomych pisarza, sympatią dla jego prozy a deprecjonowaniem jej. To powoduje efekt kręcenia się w kółko i ciągłego powracania do tych samych zarzutów i przytyków. Bardzo męcząca lektura.

WAT een biografie! Én een buitengewoon interessant onderwerp (H. is nog uitgekookter dan we al dachten) én zeer goed geschreven met alle achtergronden o.a over vrijheid van meningsuiting en de groep die zich Perpendiculaires noemde. Boek dateert al uit 2005. Ik ben benieuwd naar het vervolg; zou bijvoorbeeld graag in dezelfde stijl lezen wat er allemaal gebeurde rondom de publicatie van Soumission...
