Festus Iyayi was able to do what other Nigerian Civil War writers could not do : Bringing the readers into the war even when they weren't there in 1967/1970. The sheer realistic picture of the battle on the Onitsha bridge was not, strangely repulsive, it only activated an 'almost' deja vu feeling and brought a real feeling of dread felt during wars. This book is simply great and purely frank.
An interesting , somewhat personal experience of the civil war, festus iyayi as a social realist has definitely exposed the darkerr sides of the war through his main character.
