Mutilate My Heart

Rate this book
Punk rock band Mutilated Arteries has been seventeen-year-old Becca's world (aka obsession) for the last year. When the band schedules a concert in her hometown, she and her best friend Carli are the first ones in line to buy tickets. The night is everything she expects it to be and more, especially after making friends with the new super-cute bassist, Sketch.

Becca's mom warns her not to fall for a rock star because rock stars are always on the road - or they die in a plane crash, like her mom's favorite band did twenty-something years ago. But after the band's tour bus breaks down and they're stuck hanging out in Roizen Hills for a week, it's hard for Becca not to fall for Sketch and his caricature drawings and toxic green eyes.

Becca knows Sketch is leaving as soon as the bus is fixed, and she can't be his fan-turned-girlfriend anyway because of the lead singer's "No Girlfriends" rule. Plus, there's something strange about the guys that Becca can't quite decipher... like how they won't reveal their real names, their always-changing odd appearances, and the guitarist's obsession with blood and zombies. Still, Becca wants nothing more than for Sketch to mutilate her heart...but it just might not be in a way she expects.

It's so very hard to talk about this book without giving away spoilers, but I'm going to do my very, very best. I remember when Emily pitched me the idea for this book. It was insta-love for me. I love anything with music and rockstars, and I'm allllll for rockstar romance! (I know, she's my sister, and you think I'm biased, but seriously, I'd love this book even if she was a stranger. Music is my oxygen.)

I think it's every girl's dream to get to meet your favorite celeb, hang out with them for a week, and have an insta-romance with them. The romance between Becca & Sketch moves quickly, but they ARE teenagers, and even at my age, I think I could have insta-feelings for David from Simple Plan. (Who am I kidding? I've been in love w/him since I was 16) Sketch is quirky, fun, and super cute - and he plays bass! A boy with a guitar is always hot! He's a very great love interest, and I think most girls will swoon over him.

One of my favorite things about this book is the relationship between Carli (Becca's BFF) and the band's guitarist, Corpse. Here's where I'm biased. There's a lot of me in Carli. I adore her, and I feel like Emily captured all of my good qualities to put into this character. It makes me realize I don't suck after all ;) haha! Corpse is adorable! He has such a fun, upbeat "life of the party" personality, and these two play off of Becca & Sketch very well. I love the dynamic of the group. (Plus, I named Corpse, so yeah, more bias. But how funny is it to have a character who is full of life named Corpse? I love irony.)

BUT my favorite part of this story is Ink - the drummer - who is so MY book boyfriend, and no, I will not share. Seriously, he was written for me. <3

This book reads like a YA contemporary romance, but there are paranormal elements/twists. I'm not a huge paranormal reader, so I liked the contemp feel of this book, and the paranormal twist was actually very clever and genius. I can't imagine this book without the twist, so I approve.

If you're looking for a good YA romance, a music book, a paranormal book, a book with hot boys, or just something awesome to read, MUTILATE MY HEART is it. I'm SO glad I got to be along for the ride while this book came to life, and I hope everyone else loves it as much as I do. :)

I can honestly say that this YA is like nothing I ever read before. And I have to admit - it is good that I did not know or have any clue about the twist of the story because I would not have chosen to read the book in that case.

Yes I am honest about that and about the fact that I really loved it and I was surprised about it myself.

Sit down

relax

Enjoy the right

oh and do not stick to your idea of conventional romance too much will you ?

Thank you to Emily for the review copy! This in no way affected my views of the novel.

I hereby proclaim the Godwin sisters masters at writing fangirl stories you want to live in and maybe even sell your soul to the zombie gods to so they can trade you off with the girls in it. Can I say squee? Squeeeee! You all know how I'm pretty much Nikki Godwin's pimp and I think I'll be branching out and pimping Emily as well. That's if she'll allow Mutilated Arteries to be on the same management company as Spaceships Around Saturn. Ha! Anyway, I won't be mentioning Nikki anywhere in this review lest for this paragraph so I'd end it with this. Nikki has time and again admitted to being iffy on writing kissing scenes and such. I am glad to announce that Emily isn't shy at writing them! So if you want more kisses (while being a clean YA at that too!) with the Godwin stamp of sweetness and awesomeness, you're in for a treat with Mutilated My Heart.

Your favorite band has a gig in the next town over. What do you do? You go to it, of course! And that's how it all starts as Becca, our protagonist, along with her best friend, Carli, go to Roizen Hills for a night to remember as Mutilated Arteries rock their world and their hearts. They catch the band's eye as their mega-fans of the night and so, they got to know the band. Becca spends the next day with the new bassist Sketch and Carli with Corpse. That was supposed to be goodbye but then their tour bus broke and they'll be staying for a few more days until their bus gets fixed. Becca knows she must stay away from Sketch before she falls for him because let's face it, the band will be gone in days. Plus, Nightmare, the band's lead singer, has a no-girlfriends rule and definitely a no-fan-turned-girlfriend rule. But still, she falls for Sketch because WHO WOULDN'T? Tick tock, tick tock.

I like Becca and Carli because I see myself in them. Being a fangirl is a lifestyle, guys. And I like them even more because they love Mutilated Arteries not because they're hot and handsome and all that. They love them for their music. Mutilated Arteries got Becca out of a nasty break-up and ain't that one of the best reasons to love a band? When they get you through something? I love Walk the Moon because I seriously listened to them EVERYDAY during my last year in university. They got me through my thesis writing, every exam, everything. I listen to them when I need to be alert and stay up all night, when I feel sad, when I feel happy, when I need to sleep and all the verbs I do.

That's why my giddy mind relished every single moment Becca and Sketch shared, as well as Carli and Corpse's. I was imagining myself with my favorite band. Haha! But aside from that, even though their romance is a ticking bomb waiting, I couldn't care less. I just love how they lived in the moment and went for what they want even if Nightmare keeps on saying it's ~forbidden~. Plus, guys, SKETCH IS SWEET. So unconventionally sweet and I was smiling so hard when he got her the ugly stuffed anteater at the carnival! I remember wishing for a stuffed ant back then and all my friends looked at me weird because an ANT. Who wants an ant? ME!

Not only were Sketch and Becca's romance cute, Corpse and Carli's was as well. Can I get a Mutilated Arteries boy for myself? Can I get Ink? I don't mind tattoos! Even though the focus of the novel was Sketch and Becca and a little bit on Corpse and Carli, we still got a great look into the other Mutilated boys. Emily Godwin did a bang up job in differentiating them and giving them their own personalities in such a short novel! Seriously, when the novel ended, I was like, "THAT'S IT???? WHERE IS THE NEXT BOOK???" Because I want MOAR and I need MOAR.

The hows and whys of the mystery shrouding the boys aren't fully explained yet in here but Emily said that it'll be tackled in the next book. I cannot wait for the next book because I need my Mutilated fix! Of course I won't be spoiling you so go read for yourself!

Mutilated My Heart is a cute contemporary YA romance with a great ensemble of characters which I can't wait to delve into more in the upcoming books of the series. My heart definitely got mutilated while reading this - in the best way possible - by filling it with rainbow sprinkles and happy blueberry snow cones and tugged to form I HEART MUTILATED ARTERIES. I am absolutely bouncing-on-my-toes-and-squealing excited for the next book!

INITIAL THOUGHTS
Approaching reading this book I was unsure whether I would really enjoy it or not. I'm not totally sure what my expectations were, I don't read a lot of "lighter" "chick-lit" so I kind of either love them or hate them.

MY REVIEW
I received a free e-copy of this book from the Author via Oops I Read It Again Book Tours in exchange for my honest review and posting on this date as part of the blog tour.
The cover is quite hunting in that you see the heart drawn on the window and the red background with the condensation dripping down the window almost mimicking blood. I really like the style of the font of the Authors name and the book title. It has a calligraphy feel to it.
Would the cover make me pick the book up (if it was in paperback) from a bookstore shelf? Yes, it is bright enough to catch my attention and the heart and dripping condensation leave you wanting to know who drew the heart and what it represents.
So now to the book, at the outset it seems the book is going to be a straight forward tale of three girls going to see their favourite band at a local venue, then things turn a little more sinister.
Becca loves more "out there" bands than her friend Maddy, though her other friend Carli also has the same taste in music. How can I describe the girls relationship? Becca and Carli are BFF's and Maddy though a friend is kind of the "third wheel". This shows in the section of the book where they go shopping nd Maddy sort of turns her nose up at the "Emo shop" that sells band tee's etc. the shop that Becca already spends much of her money in! where she treat herself to the other band she loves t-shirt, a Depressed Michael band tee.
As Becca begins to see similarities between the bands lead singer and the lead singer of a band her mother loved years ago. Is it possible that Nightmare could actually be the same guy, the Brian Hawkins her mum still raves about?
So Becca, Carli and Maddy are going to see their favourite band, though the band is more like an obsession to Becca. The band is called Mutilated Hearts and consists of lead singer Nightmare, his younger brother Banshee, Corpse, Vertebrae (bassist) and Ink (drummer). The bassist Vertebrae has just left the band so the girls will get to check out the new bassist as it will be his first official concert with the rest of the band the night the girls go to see them.
The band members certainly seem to live up to their gory names, with Ink literally being covered in tattoo's, and Corpse is quite plainly and simply obsessed about zombies and the dead!
The girls go to the mall to buy some new clothes for the gig. Becca bumps into an attractive guy who ends up telling her his name is Sketch and that he is playing with his band at the venue the girls are going to. So Becca and sketch part ways with Becca kind of promising to look for him at the venue. I mean yeah his band may not be Mutilated Hearts but if they are on the same bill they must be decent.
So Becca is getting ready at home when her mum has a "talk" with her. It's a mother daughter heart to heart where Dawn tells her daughter not to get carried away as she did years ago "making out" and "giving her heart" to the lead singer of Death Of Darkness, Brian Hawkins. Dawn gave her heart to Brian, who then had to fly to his next gig and his plane crashed and all aboard dies in the horrific fire that followed the crash. Of course Dawn (Becca's mum never ever truly got over the loss of her first love). though whilst talking and reminiscing with Becca admits if the crash had not happened she would not have married Becca's father and Becca possibly would never have been born.
So the girls go to the concert and guess who the new bassist for Mutilated Heart's is . . . . .
I really don't want to say a great deal more about the story. Lets just say that two of the girls, Becca and Carli end up living the fan girl dream to begin with until things take shady turn. It seems that Becca and her mum Dawn may have similarities but so do the bands they love, Death Of Darkness and Mutilated Hearts too.
So did I enjoy the book? I really, truly loved this book. Becca and Carli live a little of the fan girl dream of really meeting their favourite band . . .
Would I recommend the book? I highly recommend this YA Chick Lit/FeelGreat book.
Would I read a Book Two (if available)? I was thrilled to see that there is in fact going to be a book two, and it's on my "Want To Read"list now!
Would I read other books by this Author? I will be taking a close look at any titles by this Author.

Becca is a girl who has two best friends, one that is super outgoing, the other a depressed girl that complains all the time. But she still loves them both. Carli loves Mutilated Arteries just as much as Becca does. Maddie though could care less about the band and only tags along because she can. As they go to the mall to get new outfits for the concert, Becca runs into the most gorgeous guy she has ever seen. He comes to talk to her and tell her that he will be playing in his band the night Mutilated Arteries is playing. Little does she know the guy she just met, Sketch, is the new bassist for her favorite band. Their tour bus ends up breaking down and they are stuck in her town until it can get fixed....Now Becca has to decide if she is willing to let the bassist mutilate her heart.

I read Emily's sister's book, American Girl on Saturn, and I absolutely loved it. In her book, one of the main characters is a huge Mutilated Arteries fan, but I never knew Emily's book was about that band. Once I looked into the book I knew I had to read it to get more into the world. I love how though it is two different authors for the books, they are sisters though, and they made their books both mention the others within the book. This book has mentions of Spaceships Around Saturn throughout it, though not very much.

Nikki sucks you into her book, and like her sister, Emily sucks you into hers as well. I am so glad that I met the girls and got the chance to be a part of their writing worlds. They both have such a flow to their writing that it makes it hard to stop. I sat and read this book in one sitting. I just kept devouring pages after pages. The only time I stopped reading was to get some lunch then I tore into it some more.

I wasn't sure how this was considered a paranormal romance like I heard it was, it seemed like a normal contemporary to me to start out, but the ending really made me realize that it was in fact a paranormal romance.

The book is in Roizen Hills during the summer. The girls are about to be in their senior year of high school and are fully enjoying their summer. Little do they know how much this concert is about to change their lives.

I loved how Becca wasn't your typical girl who automatically falls in love from the first page. She uses her brain and really thinks everything through throughout the book. I love that about her. There is some times when she lets her emotions get the best of her, but she always comes out of it and puts logic to the emotions.

Sketch, sigh, I'm not usually into the rocker type, but you can't help but like him. He is so sweet, and even though he is a new band member, he still is his own person and does what he feels is right. I love how he is so sweet to Becca and is still a good friend to Corpse, as well as the rest of the band.

I love the names of the band members, I was able to easily picture what each one looked like. I also right after I was done with the book, I went to her sisters blog where Nikki wrote up for Halloween interviews with all the band members of Mutilated Arteries to get to know them a little better.

This book is truly amazing and I hope all of you give it a chance, it definitely deserves it. I know a lot of Indie authors have a hard time getting their books out there, but if there was anyone who deserved to be promoted and appreciated, it's the Godwin sisters. I was so sad when this book was over but I was excited to see this is a series and not a stand alone book. I can't wait till February when the next one is supposed to come out so I can get some more Becca and Sketch, I hope!

Blog Tour Post: The Shadow Realm

4.5/5

This book was just all kinds of cute. I loved every second of it. After reading her sister's book, American Girl on Saturn, and seeing that the band mentioned in that was featured in this book, I just had to read it. And like AGOS I adored this book! It had everything I had hoped and more.

This book centers around Becca and her friends and how one night at a concert will change their lives forever. We've all been there. Fantasizing about what it would be like to meet our favourite band, what it would be like to be friends with them, or even go out with one of its members. I can see myself acting so much like Becca. Trying to act cool on the outside but be completely dying on the inside. I loved this girl and how totally awesome she was. And I loved her crazy friend Carli too.
Now even though I don't think Mutilated Arteries would be my sort of band or that I would be that attracted to the guys I still found myself really liking them. They all have great and unique personalities that shine through in their wacky outfits and crazy names. We have Nightmare, Banshee, Ink, Corpse and Sketch. They always go by their stage names which adds some mystery to them. Why does no one know their real names? Why are they always sleeping so much? And what's with Corpse's obsession with zombies and Banshee's obsession with blood? There is something different about this band and the girls are gonna be in for a big surprise when they find out what it is. I loved the paranormal element of the story. Even though the book was great as a contemporary, I think this made the book even better. I loved the twist and can't wait to find out more about it.
The romance in the book is super sweet. I really loved Sketch and Corpse. Sketch was just adorable and Corpse is hilarious, if not a bit mad :P

Overall I simply loved this book. It is beautifully written and completely captivating. It was a heartwarming contemporary, but then add in the paranormal element and you've got yourself a terrific read. The Godwin sisters are fantastic writers and I loved the crossover between their books. I highly recommend this book to everyone and I can't wait for the next installment to learn more about this insane band.

After reading Emily's Behind The Wooden Door, I knew that I wanted more from this fantastic author.

Mutilate My Heart was the perfect YA paranormal romance. I wish that more people could realize that we have a terrific novel right here in front of ours hands.

Becca is the ultimate Mutilated Arteries fan, a rock band known for their wacky names and deep lyrics. When Becca and her best friend, Carli, go to their concert and get to meet the guys themselves, each girl starts a relationship with one of the guys and their journey is just getting started. All that they don't know is that the guys are keeping a deep dark secret within.

Emily has done it again!

Right from the start, I knew that I would enjoy this novel so much, after reading American Girl on Saturn, by Emily's sister, Nikki, I wanted another Godwin novel!

I loved how the two stories related. In American Girl on Saturn, the character of Aralie's favourite band was Mutilated Arteries, and Spaceships Around Saturn was vaguely mentioned in this story. You could tell that the two Godwin sisters have a sisterly bond that many siblings long to have.

I couldn't put this novel down. Emily created a beautiful story that quickly went past, the events were unique and fun.

Becca and Carli had a likeable friendship that you don't see very often in novels, they were always there for each other and were alike in a lot of ways. I especially liked the men of Mutilated Arteries, especially Sketch, he's a Milo from another story!

Another summer read that will satisfy readers from the start. Loved it!

OMG! Where do I start with this review? Oh yes, Becca is seventeen and she is excited about going to see her favorite rock band, Mutilated Arteries (cool name. yup.)

Just a quick note. I read a lot of books and while I am sure that I read the blurb at one point, I so did not remember what it was about.

And oh my, my was it insanely good! From Becca to Carli and Nightmare to Sketch I loved these characters!
It was freakin awesome how Becca and Carli go from fangirls to hanging out with the hot as hell band.
For some reason Black Veiled Brides came to mind when I pictured these guys or maybe the dudes from PaPa Roach when Jakoby was beautiful.
Anyways I was most definitely wrapped up in the story and drawn into the chemistry of Becca and her green eyed guitar god.
The songs, lyrics and scenarios are awesome and completely believable, if not true.
I just cannot put any spoilers on this review. I just can't but I will say I heart Ink! There, I said it! (Please don't hurt me Nikki I know you called dibs!)

This is an overall a thousand percent Great Read! Awesome YA and I am waiting extremely impatient for the next book!

"Don't make out with rock stars, because they could die." - Becca's mom with great advice LOL.

Um yes this gets ten of ten stars... What? There's only five!! Oh, okay then Five Stars!

This is a super cute story. YA and really clean. I am definitely happy I read this book because I know my almost 14 year old daughter is going to love it. The story keeps you entertained and the characters are very likable. When I started reading it, I thought to myself, this story would be awesome if the characters were vampires. Now I am not going to spoil anything about the book so I will say that you will like the twist in the story, I'm not saying if they are vampires or not. I liked how it ended, I was satisfied even tho everyone always want to know more, what happens in the future, etc. But I was very content with how it ended. If you are looking for a light and fun read this is definitely the book for you.

This book had all the elements I enjoy in a read. Becca was a great main character, as well as her best friend sidekick, Carli. Getting the chance to hang out with your favorite band is a teenager's dream come true!

And you can't help but love a guy named Sketch. And he's in a band? With green eyes? What more can you wish for :) I really enjoyed reading this book and was sad when it ended because I wanted more! If you like rock star romance books this is for you. Heck, there's even a bit of...strangeness going on for you paranormal fans out there.

All in all a great read.

Becca's mom always warned her not to fall for a rock star, but what will happen when she the inevitable happens?

This is definitely not your typical young adult book! it was not too long or short,it had a very interesting plot, the characters are connectable, the romance is so sweet and the end will surprise you,I can't believe this book isn't popular by now!

5 stars :)

[Review also posted on my blog http://beentherereadthatreviewedthebo...]

I loved the blurb of Mutilate My Heart. I mean, how could I complain about the idea of dating a rockstar in my favourite band?! It was definitely the kind of book that I like to read.

Emily Godwin’s writing was a winner for me. The main story was about Becca and Sketch, and on the side Carli and Corpse. Yet Emily made sure all the other characters like Ink, Nightmare, Banshee and Maddie were never forgotten and even more so, we learnt a lot about them and their personalities too. All the characters meant it could have been quite easy to get confused between them, but Emily made sure that didn’t happen.

Whilst I was hooked throughout the whole book, I kinda felt like more could have happened in the first half of the book. I mean, it was all fun to read but maybe a couple of small twists could have livened the story up even more.

However, there was plenty to love about Mutilate My Heart. From a personal perspective, having read American Girl on Saturn, which was written by Emily’s sister Nikki, I really liked the mention of Spaceships Around Saturn and Sebastian’s Shadow, the bands featured in Nikki’s book.

I also loved Becca’s character in that she was a total fangirl like me but also because she seemed a caring, loyal friend. I wasn’t a massive fan of Sketch. For some reason, I didn’t feel connected to his character like I expected I would. However, I liked his relationship with Becca. I was probably more interested in Carli and Corpse’s kind of relationship as I thought Corpse was awesome.

The paranormal elements of Mutilate My Heart were great. I felt they really made this book stand out and added to the intrigue of the book for people who perhaps don’t just want romance.

Finally, I loved the ending. Like, really loved it. It was the kind of dramatic stuff I felt this book had been crying out for, and it was well worth the wait. Obviously, I can’t talk about it. But you need to read it. You need to read the whole book, even if you’re not a fangirl like me, but then at the end of it, you may well be one.

Becca is a die-hard Mutilated Arteries fan and when she meets the new member of the band without even realizing it she is thrilled but when the tour bus they are riding in breaks down and she gets to spend a week with him, she is in heaven. The boys are great but why don't they use their real names? Something isn't right and what happens when Becca realizes the boys aren't who she thought they are?

I totally loved the characters in this book. The boys of Mutilated Arteries, Nightmare, Ink, Corpse, Banshee and Sketch are adorable (not sure they would like being called adorable but they were) even loved their names. Becca and her BFF Carli are fantastic I really loved them, I love when an author can make them feel and talk as if they are real people. These are the type of characters I want to read more about and want their story to continue. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Becca and Sketch it was so cute but very intense and when things went the wrong way I was rooting for them the entire time.

The story is great I love the flow and the plot was fantastic. What I thought was going to happen didn’t and when they got to the diner and it hit me I was like OMG REALLY!?!?! Loved it. What a great twist, so different and worked very well.

Let me just say I'm so glad I am not the only one that believes stuffed animals might be sad if they are all alone and that they are super happy when you get them. Anteaters are adorable and now I want a stuffed anteater....just sayin :)

I gave Mutilate My Heart by Emily Godwin 5.5 stars. It is an amazing story and a lovable case of characters (they might not like to be called lovable either). I totally recommend this book to YA and Adults looking for a different read something that I haven't seen done this way. Emily Godwin is a great storyteller and I can't wait to read more from her and I can't wait for the next book in this series. I now have a new series to follow!!! YAY!!! I LOVED IT!!!

Maybe I'm a bit older than the intended reading target... So maybe it's probably 2,5 stars.

This little book was quite interesting and I really loved the cover. Still I can't pinpoint exactly what I liked about it and what I disliked.

Surely I disliked the ending. There were too many questions that remained unanswered. I would have wanted to know what happened to the guys. Why are they still playing? Did they start being musician before or after their transformation? What has Sketch to do with them? Maybe this would have made the story a bit more interesting.

I surely dislike Maddie. Jeez. But all the musicians with their odd names were kind of interesting characters. Still you didn't have that much info about their past.

I think that the Becca-Sketch love story was quite believable but if she repeated the words «rock star» one more time, I would strangled her with my bare hands. Girl, I know that Sketch is playing in a band you don't have to tell me every other page.

I know that English speakers don't like big words but I'm pretty sure that the word "Mutilate" has never been used so many times in any other book... ^__^

I'm not sure if I'll read the next one.

I think that from the beginning, I was already drawn to this book because of its association with music. What I didn’t expect, though, was that it had paranormal elements in it as well. I never got that from reading its summary, so I was really shocked when I got to that part of the story. Although it was a bit weird, I think it was cleverly incorporated into the plot. It served as quite an effective turning point considering I had no idea that anything like it would happen.
Becca and Carli were both really cool. I admired how they were always there for each other through everything. I found the romantic aspect quite sweet, too (Sketch is like Milo from American Girl on Saturn!). It’s every teenage girl’s dream to be able to hang out with a great guy from a great band! Sketch’s bandmates were also pretty awesome; they certainly lived up to their (kind of creepy) names. It was nice to see Spaceships Around Saturn mentioned in the story, forming a slight connection between it and AGoS.

I can definitely say that I loved the contemporary feel of the novel. It was a fun, light read, and I recommend it for anyone who finds interest in music, the paranormal, or both!

Mutilate My Heart is an interesting tale. I loved the rock star with a twist angle. I enjoyed the characters and it made for a quick, fun read.

Becca and Carli are fun characters. This is mainly Becca's story but Carli is along for the ride as well picking her on band member from Mutilated Arteries. I loved Becca's love of music and devotion tot the band. I love music as well so it was fun to see a book from this point-of-view. Becca doesn't have a lot of development, but it takes place over a short span of time and the main focus is the plot. Sketch also made a great character. A fun, yet down-to-earth rock star and new member of the band.

Becca and Sketch and Carli and Corpse's whirlwind romance are the real focus of the book. And there is a twist. But the book is fun and fast-moving. The plot was interesting, not too predictable and different. The fast-pace made me keep reading and almost finished it in one sitting.

If you want a book that focuses on music, rock stars and some romance, this is just the book for you. If you enjoy a paranormal twist this is fun too. I loved the book and look forward to seeing where this series goes.

This book was by far the most amazing book I've read since summer break! I remember when I was younger, I was signed up to this social teens site to meet new people. You could make quizzes and write little short stories for people to read. I spent hours reading the short stories on that website.. Anyways, this book totally brought back memories about those stories because it seemed just like the stories I used to read. Disregarding the fact that it was longer, more enticing, and bigger plot twists.

All of the elements in the book reminded me of the teenager I originally was; I loved metal, I would beg my parents to let me dye my hair all sorts of crazy colors, I went to Asking Alexandria and Black Veil Brides concerts, and still to this day I'm trying to ease my mom into letting me get the spider bite piercing before I turn 18.

The book contains an alarming amount of awesomeness, tons of hot rock/metal band members who have a weird love of zombies, and an unbelievably amazing climax!
I wouldn't die before reading this book and neither should you.

Full review is up on my blog Home of a Book Lover

I already know that this book will be about a band (rock band) and a girl fell in love with one of the members, if you've read American Girl On Saturn by Nikki Godwin, this band was mentioned and to be honest I like both books, it's not complicated and it is enjoyable to read. The story just flows without side story and yet it stays beautiful. Another thing is because I myself is a band lover and I can relate.

When I put this book on my TBR list, I wasn’t expecting the paranormal elements so that came out as quite a surprise to me. Not that it was a bad thing, but it definitely sets up a lot of mysteries that should be solved in the following books. I did however expect this book to be dark from the cover and title alone. And I think that Emily Godwin is more my kind of person in terms of music or musicians.

Mutilate My Heart was a very short read that I managed to finish in around 3 hours or less. The book had me bouncing at the edge of my seat from the time Becca met Sketch. I pretty much put it together who he was and I was excited to see how Becca would handle it and how everything would play out between the two of them. She’s definitely a very lucky lady to be able to attract a gorgeous band member from one of her favorite bands. And it seems that luck really was very much on her side when the band’s tour bus broke down and forced Mutilated Arteries to camp out at the local mall’s parking lot. But maybe she won’t be so lucky when she finds out the band’s dark secret, and she also feels that this wouldn’t really last since the band would need to leave soon enough.

I personally love most of the characters in this book. Becca and her friend, Carli, are total fangirls for Mutilated Arteries. I love how Becca tried so hard to play it cool around the band, and I love her genuine interest in music. Carli, on the other hand, definitely was a little more obsessed and didn’t mind showing it. I even love Becca’s mom who keeps on telling the story of when she kissed the singer of her favorite band years ago and how the singer died three days later. She seems really fun and pretty cool. One thing I’m not sure of is Becca’s annoying friend, Maddie, who doesn’t really seem that important to the story. I’m not sure I like how they treated her either.

And then there are the band members of Mutilated Arteries. Sketch, the bassist, got his name for his talent in drawing. He’s also quite the charmer. Corpse, the zombie-obsessed guitarist, seems like the most outgoing out of all the band members. Ink, the drummer, probably looks like the scariest of them all with tattoos more than skin and his human spine belt, but that scene in the haunted music hall was just so precious and gosh do I love him. That was definitely one of my favorite scenes. Nightmare, the vocalist, is definitely a scary one and always so serious. I feel there’s a different side to him that we have yet to see though or maybe I’m just imagining that. Nightmare’s brother and lead guitarist, Banshee, earned his name for the way he sings in the band. He may be the only one who can actually sway his brother’s mind. And then there are some characters that might need more fleshing out before I can judge whether I like them or not.

This is the kind of book that had me screaming “More! Now!” I wanted to see more of the band members and know more about each one of them. I wanted to see more of Becca and Sketch’s relationship. I loved the romance between the two of them and how it’s far from normal and consists of an ugly anteater, creepy clowns, and haunted places. I’m not usually into paranormal and normal characters mixing, but Emily Godwin made me believe that this should work and I should be rooting for them. Love is love. And Mutilate My Heart also ends in a way that you would still have a lot of questions about the characters, the plot, the mysteries, and maybe more. But most of all, I just really loved so much about the book that I would want to read anything Emily Godwin may have written or will write in the future.

I like how Spaceship Around Saturn (from American Girl on Saturn by Nikki Godwin) is mentioned inMutilate My Heart, and how Mutilated Arteries is also mentioned in American Girl on Saturn. I wonder how much the Godwin sisters (Nikki and Emily) influenced each other in writing their books. Despite being both writers that fully support each other (you should see their blogs), I think they have their own personal styles that set them apart, and make me love them individually.

OVERALL, Mutilate My Heart was a wonderful short read about a love for music and love for a person. Sometimes love is just love. No matter the differences or costs. Sometimes the risks can be worth it. Mutilate My Heart blends the contemporary setting with paranormal mysteries and sets out as a great start to the series. It has a unique set of interesting characters that I personally fell with love. I love the romance, the humor, the lyrics to the songs, the conversations, and even Becca’s unspoken thoughts. This is a book that left me wanting more and I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

"Roizen Hills! I have one question for you all," he says. His eyes bore into me. This is it. I can feel it. "Can you join us...in our UNDEAD MASQUERADE!?"

Mutilate My Heart had been on my radar for a little while now. A young adult story about a girl and her favourite band, a good dose of romance and some paranormal thrown in for good measure. Emily Godwin could have written this book especially for me. And after reading it, I'm almost convinced that she did. This super quick read was a winner, from start to finish.

What seventeen year old girl doesn't want to meet the band she's obsessed with and have a romance with their favourite member? Every girls dream right? How many actually get to live that dream? Becca and her best friend Carli couldn't be more excited about their favourite band Mutilated Arteries doing a gig in their home town. The show is everything they expected and then some. But when the bands tour bus breaks down and Mutilated Arteries are in town for longer than expected, romance blossoms.

I turn to find myself face-to-face with the most beautiful boy I've ever seen. His crazy, pale blonde hair falls down his neck and around his face. His toxic green eyes stare back at me like a hazard sign.

The romance in the book was so incredibly sweet. Both couples were so good together. I loved Becca and Sketch. How could a girl not fall for Sketch with that amazing smile of his, along with his super sweetness. But I really loved the ease between Carli and Corpse. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely amazing chemistry between Becca and Sketch, but I think Becca was always conscious of the fact that once the tour bus was fixed the band would be leaving and her time with Sketch would come to an end, where Carli was more of a jump in with both feet kind of girl.

For the most part Mutilate My Heart reads like a YA contemporary. There are various references to zombies and blood and such throughout the book, but it wasn't until much later that the paranormal element really came into play. I loved Becca and Carli's initial reactions to things. It was just how you would expect two seventeen year old girls to act. Not everything gets explained during this book so I'm really looking forward to the next one and learning more about the guys story.

Emily Godwin had me grinning from ear to ear for such a huge portion of this book. She had me reminiscing about all the boy band crushes I've had over the years. All the times I've gone to see my favourite bands in concert and the times when I've been lucky enough to actually meet one of my idols. I still remember being completely awe struck meeting Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance. Fangirl much!! Mutilate My Heart was a book that just made me feel good. An author that can manage to do that definitely has something special.

He's in a band. He's absolutely perfect!

Fun, sweet, and a lovely YA romance, Mutilate My Heart was a great read. It had sweet romance, surprising secrets, and a paranormal twist. I really enjoyed reading this wonderful book.

Becca was a great heroine. She was realistic and easy to relate to. I really liked her. I thought she was a lovely character.

Sketch was also wonderful. He was so sweet and adorable and I just loved him! He had secrets in his past that I wish were more explained, but I suppose I'll get that explanation in the second book. I thought he was perfect.

The romance was sweet. Becca and Sketch were so cute together. Especially Sketch, with his adorableness. I also liked the secondary romance between Corpse and Carli. They were also great together.

I liked how all the other members of Mutilated Arteries were individual characters. Corpse was so fun. Whenever he was on the page, he livened things up. And the others were great, as well. Ink, Nightmare, and Banshee were all great characters, even though I kind of wanted to hit Nightmare. They were all great.

The plot went by quickly. I was hooked the entire way through. I wish the paranormal elements had been more explained in this book. I almost had a fit about that, until I realized there would be another book in the series, so I guess the explanation will be there. But, I still wanted to know at least a little about it. I kind of felt like I was left hanging. But, it wasn't too big a deal. I still really enjoyed the story. The ending was sweet and it has me curious to see what's coming up next.

Mutilate My Heart was a wonderful YA romance. I really enjoyed reading it. Lovers of romance, or fangirls of the world, this is a book you'll want to check out.

I was really upset when it wasn't some cute little ditsy young adult story.

It was just a miss for me, I guess people liked the short ending and the terrible ending. This "series" wasn't for me.

OMG, why was this book so short??????
WHY?
I can't wait to find out more about the guys. How can they be?
I really hope you deliver the next book fast because I'm gonna mutilate something if not.
I loved the new approach on zombies. And all those questions Becca has, I have them also. I literally can't wait.
