Hard eh on this one overall. The shorter stories in this series always feel a little off, for the most part-- hard to fully develop a new character AND a romance in a shorter span of time, especially one that tries to do so many things at once (here the romance has to keep pace with Gabriel's family drama, Gideon and Felicia's relationship, the cats, the window competition, the avalanche... jesus, I forgot how much plot Susan Mallery stuffed into this book, and dramatically to its detriment??). Gabriel himself feels more like a caricature than a real person (his parents are better developed), and the connection between him and Noelle is lukewarm at best, let alone the fact that they MEET AND GET MARRIED IN UNDER TWO MONTHS, WHAT THE FUCK. (Sidebar: Dominique, in All Summer Long, calls going two months from meeting to marrying Dan a "whirlwind" romance that people had doubts about, yet incidents like the one in this book happen ROUTINELY in the main Fool's Gold narratives and are just... not questioned at all?? It's so deeply ridiculous to me.)
So between the casual transphobia (not the first time, and not a good look, Susan Mallery), the standard man-runs-away-only-to-come-back-like-two-days-later-and-everything-is-fine-now plot (with an even more boring man than usual), a really quick turnaround on decades of family drama, Mayor Marsha being annoyingly psychic yet again, and again, way, WAY too much plot crammed in, not even Noelle being a pretty fun heroine is enough to redeem this past two stars. Again, the hardest of "eh"s.
