I love that this book was dedicated to Albert Schweitzer, and it is a thoroughly researched book about Monteverdi’s music. That being said, I was looking for more of a biography, and this is definitely best for a musicologist!
A musicological read that flows much better than any of the Hildegard, Machaut or Josquin books I've trampled through thus far. Schrade contextualizes Monteverdi exceptionally well, perhaps a necessity when you're awarding him the lofty title of "Creator of Modern Music". The argument is compelling, certainly.
