~ARC review~

Wow! What a ride! I thought I knew what I was getting into after having read the first book in the series, but the world building, stakes, and 🌶️ in this book had me floored.

Scarlet continues to be her badass self and seeing her overcome the difficulties and trauma of the first book made it interesting to read.

As for Jack, I'm a sucker for the protective type 😘

And even though there was no Dimitri (who was my fave in the first book) Sol comes in as the sweetest summer child and puts a smile on my face with almost every scene he's in.

But that ending!!!! Leave it to Hannah to leave me full of suspense 😋 can't wait for the next book!

As a Beta reader for Hannah I was able to see how this story unfolds and it does not disappoint! We pick
up right at the ending of the events from The Crimson Scar.

Update: I am on doing a reread during ARCs and doing a full review!

Final read through review:
I was so excited to Beta read this and once the ARC copy came to me it was a familiar, yet a different reading experience, as quite a bit had changed over my multiple read throughs.

I loved being back with these characters and TSC takes you into new territories and we get a lot of new characters as the new HEX members learn and train together. Each of their personalities are unique and bring a fun mix of characters. Sol is a hoot and I instantly gravitated to him. The banter with him and Olive is great! Olive and Ivy, along with Scar are a powerhouse of women and their dynamics as a trio are frenemies at first (Ivy and Scar mainly). Rusty is a lone-wolf type, and has a big secret that none know about. Peri is mysterious, kind of a loner as well, but is super caring. They are mentored by Thea and Carmen, who are like the mother hens of the group to keep them in line, but also have some secrets of their own. It’s a wonderful found-family story.

Jack and Scar are still navigating their secret relationship. They can’t afford to get caught. There is some angst and pining, sneaking kisses and touches. He’s her Guardian and forbidden to be with her. The spice is low in this book as well with more plot to cover. Limited scenes but enough to make you want more.

We get to meet a mysterious man named Alex who enlists Scarlett to help him find out what’s been happening to children in the kingdom, his younger brother a recent victim of kidnapping. Alex is witty and becomes a great friend to Scarlett and when the truth comes out about who he is, I was shocked as well as she was. There is also the continued target on Scar’s back since the HEX trials and Ravens are in Tealwaters to take her out, yet she continues to beat all odds and survives. There is plenty of action and twists and turns to keep you guessing and they are some big reveals. The ending is the same from my previous ready, yet some of the journey there has changed. This ends in a cliffy and I was still WTF again! This just makes me want more lol.

You don’t want to miss this next installment of The Crimson Scar series!

The Sapphire Crown (Book 2, The Crimson Scar series) – Hannah Penfold

I heard about this author from a colleague at work and had seen the author’s books at a few indie book shops. So, I did my first Etsy order and ordered this book and the next in the series from the author herself!

Hannah Penfold is a homegrown Western Australia author who loves a good cup of tea and is an avid reader herself. She is also a Slytherin but don’t let that scare you she enjoys beaches and sunshine!

Scarlet Seraphine is alive and is now the next Raven of the Hex. But neither she nor her guardian Jack are safe from danger, out of the kitchen into the frying pan as they say.

They begin the next chapter in their journey which starts in the land of Tealwaters and together they need to navigate their lives and roles in the Hex.

Which yes sounds much easier than what they had to endure during the Hex Trials, but it is all thrown into chaos when someone mysteriously Seraphine seeking her help in finding the children that are being taken away from their homes and disappearing, never to be seen again.

Thus, Seraphine and Jack embark on a quest to find out who is taking the children, why and where they are being taken.

All while trying to find their place amongst the other members of the Hex. However, this is not the end of their troubles, seems the Elder Raven has far from forgotten about Seraphine.

The Elder Raven has sent some Ravens after Seraphine with the aim to kill her. Seems the job of a Raven of the Hex is never done, nor could one say they have ever led a dull life. Together Seraphine and Jack must work together and with the other members of the Hex to uncover that is really happening to the children and to protect each other.

“The Sapphire Crown” picks up right where the author left us with The Crimson Scar, I absolutely love and appreciate when authors do this – makes it much easier to follow along with the story. All the twists and turns in this book provided for an action-packed story, that was well paced. The author surprised with me with a couple of the story elements, I won't reveal what ones, so it doesn’t ruin the story for anyone, but she knows what ones I mean! I really enjoyed this story, as much as I did the first one, it only took me a few days to finish it. The ending was such a bombshell that I did not see coming and desperately hope the wait for book three is not a long one. The only comment I will make here is I desperately want to read more about Seraphine’s father, maybe it's just me and my own crazy theory but I feel he has more to add. And I wonder if he is not exactly who we think he is.

4.5 stars for this amazing sequel 👌

I honestly thought after book 1 I couldn't be shocked anymore, and that I had an idea of what and where the story was going. But BOY was I wrong! 😅

I was sad to say goodbye to some of the characters from The Crimson Scar - Dimitri I'm looking at you. BUT there was SO many new characters to love introduced in this book that it made up for it!

Sometimes books focus on the characters and relationships/development OR the plot, high stakes and drama. This book however did BOTH!!!!

It was fast paced, had amazing different and interesting characters all mixed with with powers and spells and vampires and honestly - just read the books 😆 you won't regret it.
