Louis L'Amour Trail Mix: Volume One

Rate this book
More than any writer before or since, Louis L'Amour brought the American West to life. His action-packed stories dealt with eternal themes: honor, deceit, passion, betrayal, loyalty, courage, love. His settings were historically accurate, his prose riveting, and his characters colorful: good guys, bad guys, tough, roughs, sidekicks, and saints. TRAIL MIX II gathers four popular Louis L'Amour stories, performed by Willie Nelson: "Mistakes Can Kill You," "The Nester and the Piute," "Trail to Pie Town," and "Big Medicine."

Louis Dearborn L'Amour was an American novelist and short story writer. His books consisted primarily of Western novels, though he called his work "frontier stories". His most widely known Western fiction works include Last of the Breed, Hondo, Shalako, and the Sackett series. L'Amour also wrote historical fiction (The Walking Drum), science fiction (The Haunted Mesa), non-fiction (Frontier), and poetry and short-story collections. Many of his stories were made into films. His books remain popular and most have gone through multiple printings. At the time of his death, almost all of his 105 existing works (89 novels, 14 short-story collections, and two full-length works of nonfiction) were still in print, and he was "one of the world's most popular writers".

5 Stars for Louis L’Amour Trail Mix: Volume 1 (audiobook) by Louis L’Amour read by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.

This is a wonderful production. I like the stories but the all star narration puts it over the top.

My grandfather loved all things cowboy and Louis L’Amour, so I decided I needed to read something he loved. I listened to this version narrated by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson. Well done and everything he enjoyed, but just not my style.

The first of three short stories, Riders for the Brand, is a full-cast narration read by The Highwaymen, a country music group who released three albums between ’85 and ’95.

Willie Nelson is the narrator, Waylon Jennings plays a killer Walt Sieber, Kris Kristofferson portrays a hardened Jed Ashbury who is traveling west to find work on a ranch, and Johnny Cash plays a gunslinger named Tony who wields 32 calibers of aggravation. Their individual voices are so distinctive.

Story #2 is skip-worthy and #3, Dutchman’s Flat, brings back a cast but it doesn’t have the same impact.

Whomever decided to get Willie Nelson and his fellow Highwaymen to do this collection of western stories was a genius. The first of the three (the only one that has all four highwaymen doing characters or narration) is the best, but the other two are also worth listening to.

Finding this totally made my day!

(Also, with each passing day, I become more and more convinced I should move to Texas...)

The first story, Riding for the Brand, narrated by Willie Nelson and featuring Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson was really good. The other two stories were OK.

The stories are standard, almost cliche by now, cowboy fare. But man, the cast of this audiobook makes all the difference. I'd be hard pressed to ocme up with a better narrator of Louis L'Amour stories than Willie Nelson. Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson are also perfectly cast. Well-worth the listen if you like westerns.

Amazing audio version with sound effects and voice actors like Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. The first two stories have to do with mistaken identity: one purposefully perpetrated and the second accidental. I loved Riding for the Brand-killer story.

I don't usually care for westerns, but who could resist stories read by Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson? :)

Love Louis L'Amour books - good conquers evil, great description of the area, and insight into life at the time.
