THEIR HEARTS WERE DIVIDED BY WAR... THEIR DESTINY SEALED BY LOVE
As the spirit of the Revolutionary War swept across her new homeland of Massachusetts, young Saura Ainsley was determined to help her American compatriots. But while trying to slip a vital document through enemy lines, Saura was captured by the British redcoats, who decided to tame the rebellious beauty by forcing her to marry their captain. Furious but trapped, Saura had no choice but to capitulate to the gallantly amused Captain Seth Adams.
Though Saura might be made to yield her body to her enemy husband, she refused to surrender her heart. Yet despite her vow, Saura found herself succumbing to her captain's passion and tender concern. But only when tragedy strikes, and a startling secret is revealed, can Saura begin to admit what she feels for her dark, handsome soldier...a man who's resolved to conquer any obstacle that stands between them and their love.
Read: 12/5/25 Setting: Massachusetts 1774 Trope: enemies to lovers, forced/MOC
This story started off so strong but fizzled out near the end. 😞
plot: Saura has spent her whole life in England. Now, she discovers at 14, that her real father lives in Massachusetts. So she travels to America. Father and daughter fall in love instantly and Saura decides to live with her new family.
3 years later and the British are starting to occupy the streets of their small town. When her father is sick, Saura decides to act as a carrier in his place. She dresses like a boy (soot on her face) and races to deliver a vital document to help her compatriots.
When Saura is caught, she faces hanging as a traitor. One of the majors (Chaplin) offers her a reprieve. He believes only a husband can save her traitor soul. Saura chooses to marry the kind Captain. Seth drunkenly (he had been injured) agrees to the marriage. Unfortunately, Saura can't resist Seth and they consummated the marriage. Still, Saura finds away to flee the marriage and make it home to her father. Hopefully, no one will ever know!
No such luck! Seth makes it back to his wife's home. At first, he agrees to keep the marriage a secret, but eventually Saura's father finds out. Seth is a great, charming guy. If only he wasn't a Tory! Saura might yield her body to her enemy, but she refuses to surrender her heart. Can Seth convince Saura that their love is more important than politics or will Saura ruin the best thing that ever happened to her?
liked: 1. Seth was fantastic! He was almost too perfect. He was definitely too patient! I wish he would have gone full alpha on Saura. Someone needed to spank her spoiled a**! 2. I liked the beginning of the story. The potential was there. The ending was also well done. 3. I liked all the secondary characters! Her father and Eske were wonderful and kind. I liked Saura's adopted mother ending up with the biological father. 4. There was another villain in the story that I didn't see coming. That was a nice surprise! 5. Seth looking for Shakespeare's Taming of The Shrew story for helpful ideas was funny. The fact that it worked was hilarious! 😂
dislike: 1. Saura was a hard character for me to like. She was great until she had to marry Seth. Then she turns into an annoying shrew, all because he's a TORY 😱. Her patriotism doesn't really make sense. She's only been in the country for 3 years! That's a very short time to become a traitor to your homeland. I just don't buy her hatred of all redcoats. 🤷♀️. Then she's mean to Seth through most of the book. Seth is impossible to hate, so she just looks like a fool. 2. The prologue/mystery was so unnecessary and led nowhere or nowhere interesting anyway! I didn't care when the last piece of the puzzle presented itself. It's a shame to because it could have made for a compelling mystery! 3. The author wasted an interesting time period! The beginnings of the war and all the events that happened need to be represented more in the story.
Conclusion: This story was ruined by an annoying heroine. 😑. This was my first book by this author and I'm a little hesitant to try her again. We will see ...
This was a good read. I don't know if you'd necessarily considered it clean. It doesn't go into detail, but there is implied sex. (Though, *spoiler alert* they are technically married.)

Kathy Myers was our neighbor, so I read this book at rather a young age. It's remarkably historically accurate, and more resembles a romantic dramedy than a bodice-ripper romance. During the War for Independence, a young colonial woman is caught spying on the British, and forced to marry a British officer as punishment. Of course they fall in love, and of course there's more spying and double-agentry and a rescue in the dark of night when a plot goes horribly awry. Fun, and actually more romantic than a lot of "romance" novels.
